Full textThis research was focused on developing methodologies to determine aboveground biomass in tree and shrubs species in the central part and southern Chile from allometric basis equations to remote sensing approaches. The main intention was to build biomass equations by tree components, such as stem wood, stem bark, foliage and, total aboveground biomass in Araucaria araucana (Mol.) K. Koch in southern Chile, applying a destructive sampling, which includes felling and weighing the trees on the field. On the other hand, similar approaches were used in 14 shrubs species in the Mediterranean shrubland in central Chile. A part of the biomass equations, also physical wood properties were determined in A. araucana and in the 14 shrub species, such as moisture content (%) and basic wood density (Mg m-3), being a crucial step to determine dry weights in the biomass weighed in the field. In addition, biomass allocation was determined to understand the biomass distribution through different tree components. In the case of shrub species, these could be divided only into two components, being these components the woody and foliage biomass. To provide accurate biomass models in A. araucana, we tested several explanatory variables in addition to the diameter at breast height (DBH), such as total height, crown diameter, crown length, age, basal area and wood density to assess whether adding other covariates the errors in the biomass prediction can be reduced. Due the restricted sample size, we applied a k-fold cross validation, considering that to split the dataset to train and test for 33 trees were not enough. The metrics used to validate the models to estimate the total aboveground biomass, and to the specific allometric models by tree components were the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). In addition, the estimates parameters were assessed through the Percentage Relative Standard Error (PRSE) to see the uncertainty in the coefficient models. The approach used in shrub species was different compared to A. araucana because a single stem diameter from a multi-stem is not representative for the whole plant. Therefore, the main explanatory variables used for the shrub species were the crown area and the crown volume as a principle variable predictor. The models provided were species- specific for the 14 shrub species, but also a multi-species model was developed as a general model. The validation included the same metrics used in A. araucana. However, the multi-species model was assessed also through the Akaike information criterion (AIC) due the data variability between the different species and the two geographical zones. The biomass models in A. araucana were used to develop methodologies to estimate aboveground forest biomass using satellite data, specifically, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. On the other hand, the same allometric models were used to train and test Sentinel-2 data to detect forest degradation in 12 forest stands in southern Chile, where the forest alteration was categorized in four levels, being these i) none, ii) low, iii) medium and iv) high. The biomass measured in the field was compared to the NDVI values provided by a total of 60 images over 12 months (from June 2019 to June 2020) from both Sentinel-2 vectors. The results indicated that Sentinel-2 data can distinguish the four alteration levels, but medium and high alterations obtained similar NDVI distributions, being not easy to distinguish both categories through satellite data.

Full textFire Forest Hazard reduction and biomass energy use. A Green Economy proposition for a large area in the Central Apennine, Marche Region (I). The present work aims to propose a model of forest fire hazard reduction, in a sustainable way, reducing the biomass charge and using it in a network of high efficient woodchip biomass boilers. The topic of the biomass supply estimation is taken in account, by analyzing a large panel of sylvicoltural executive projects for forest fire hazard reduction, as financed by the European Union in the frame of the Rural Development Program, Reg. (CE) n°1698/95 (PSR in Italian). Moreover, this dissertation defines a number of public schools as a demand of the biomass supply, in a frame of energy efficiency requalification, and a number of Biomass Trade Centers (BTC). A start up of a mechanism, from the forest to the public final user is devised, analyzing the critical factors and proposing tailored solutions to overcome them. Key Words: forest fire hazard, forest biomass estimation, rural development program/PSR, biomass trade centre, wood biomass boilers, forest fire hazard reduction projects, Reg.

[EN] The municipality of Serra sits on the southern slope of the Sierra Calderona mountains. The municipality occupies an area of 5,730 hectares of which, 95% of its territory is within the Sierra Calderona Natural Park and 85% of the territory corresponds to forest land. The economic structure of the municipality has had, since 1960, the construction sector as the main axis of the economy, leaving the forestry sub-sector as a residual activity. This has caused a labor flow from the primary sector to more productive ones, resulting in a disorderly growth of the forest mass, causing a deterioration of the landscape. This has considerably increased the risk of fire and pests and ultimately threatens the forest heritage of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park. Following the guidelines set by the EU priorities for rural development, a research project aimed at the creation of local jobs has been launched through the promotion of sustainable activities whose results are reinvested in the Local society generating a circular economy that constitutes the basis of the local socio-economic development. The project consists of the sustainable energetic use of forest, agricultural and garden biomass and its conversion to a solid fuel (wood pélet) used in the heating of public buildings and on the other hand, marketing the surplus of this wood pélet, this aims to a saving of energy bills and waste management costs and brings a benefit that can be used directly in the creation of local employment. The project also contributes to the protection and improvement of the Serra Mountains. This thesis aims to study whether an adequate model of management of biomass in the municipal urban forest interface, such as Serra, included in the Natural Park of the Sierra Calderona can have direct positive effects on the prevention of forest fires and the fight against climate change, the thesis also studies whether these management models can be economically and environmentally sustainable and their ability to contribute to improving the socioeconomic development of these populations, setting their Population and offering a true rural development based on the rational use of their natural resources.
