Abstract:

Abstract:
Biography has been for the last fifty years the stepchild of history. Drawing on the author’s personal experience as a biographer and a reader of biographies, the article considers the reasons why most historians avoid biography, examines the three unproductive forms of the genre or “no gos” to be avoided by would-be biographers, discusses the five caveats that should guide those writing biographies, and indicates the ways in which biography can be employed to advance our understanding of the past. Despite being a genre abounding in problems, biography is both viable and valuable, a useful but not a major weapon in the historian’s arsenal.

Abstract:
It can safely be said that the colonial period ushered a new era of Sīrah-writing in the Indian subcontinent. A number of biographies of the Prophet (PBUH) were written in response to the works of Orientalists on Sīrah. In this wake, many Urdu biographers employed traditional and innovative methodologies in their biographies of the Prophet (PBUH). One such innovation was the usage of sacred scriptures of other religions in their biographies. This article studies the prophecies about the Prophet (PBUH) in Judeo-Christian scriptures and the ways in which Urdu biographers of the Prophet (PBUH) utilized them in their works.

Abstract:
Biographies and Pen-Sketches are two separate branches and lots of these two are available in Urdu Literature as well as writings about these two categories but this article is an effort to find sketches of personalities related to the authors of biographies without whom the author's personality cant be revealed fully. These people may be the author's relatives, friends, peers, observers and other persons who has been with him/her at various stages of author's life. Amongst them may be their parents, children, spouse and other relatives as well as other in the same profession. A good biographer takes are of all the aspects, requirements and dimensions from start to end of an autobiography. A person is central to an autobiography can't be highlighted completely unless different aspects of his/her life are described with reference to other related people. This article focuses on the personalities around the central-to-a-biograpgy person and describes them in the light of various biographies in which he/she is talked about. To support this argument, examples are also taken from the biographies written after the selected biography so that it can be proved that biographers can also tell the importance of presented sketches of other personalities. Although these sketches are not written with any such plan, as compared to formal pen sketches, even then these can be considered important and complete to some extent and are comparable to pen sketches.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the early book-length biographies of Darwin published from his death in 1882 up to 1900. By making 1900 the cutoff point I can examine the biographies produced when the iconic figure was not yet set in stone, and before the rediscovery of Mendel's work in the early twentieth century and the anniversary celebrations of 1909 changed the way in which Darwin was regarded. Darwin's biographers dealt with three major themes. First, several biographers emphasized his scientific abilities, in particular his powers of observation and his prowess in conducting experiments. Second, many biographers discussed his character, a key issue in determining whether or not he could be trusted as a scientific guide. Finally, his scientific theories and religious beliefs, and how they related to the evolutionary controversy, formed a topic taken up by most biographers. By focusing on these three themes, the biographies published before 1900 were important in shaping the image of Darwin that was forming in American and British culture.

Abstract:
The subject of the research in the article is the reception of the figure and fate of Leo Tolstoy in biographies written in the period from 1894 to 2020, as well as its historical and cultural dynamics. The authors identify strategies for studying the life of Leo Tolstoy by biographers of different historical periods, which allows us to analyze and evaluate the dynamics of perception of the writer's figure in the XIX-XXI centuries. The reception of the figure of Leo Tolstoy in different historical periods is heterogeneous: the interpretation of the writer's image is influenced not only by the personal preferences of biographers, their goals and objectives, but also by the value orientations set by time. The historical epoch also influences the author's strategies for creating the image of Leo Tolstoy. Biographies of Leo Tolstoy written by different authors are devided into three groups: biographies created by contemporaries of Leo Tolstoy; biographies written by authors of the Soviet period; biographies of the post-Soviet period. Such division is due to a change in the historical context that affects the reception and interpretation of the image of the hero of the biography.

Greene, Mary, and Henrike Rau. "Moving across the life course: A biographic approach to researching dynamics of everyday mobility practices." Journal of Consumer Culture 18, no. 1 (March 28, 2016): 60–82. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1469540516634417.

Abstract:
This article connects existing mobility biographies research with social practice inquiries into the dynamics of consumption and examines the potential of a biographic, practice-centred approach for researching everyday practices. Following a critical review of the benefits and limitations of existing research on mobility biographies, the article explores some key ways in which a practice theory approach can be employed to reframe and extend how dynamics of mobility over the life course can be conceptualised and analysed. A key feature of the discussion is a consideration of the ways in which the concepts of practice and career can broaden investigations of practice biographies to include various perspectives and scales. The article then outlines the development and application of a biographic, practice-centred methodology which was employed in an ongoing mobility biographies study based in Ireland. In demonstrating the potential of this approach for researching practice careers across the life course, empirical data relating to an individual’s career-in-car-driving are presented and discussed. The article concludes that, despite some limitations, practice-centred biographic approaches offer potential for addressing some unanswered questions regarding mobility practices.

Abstract:
AbstractPresuppositions of one sort or another are inevitable, but one way to control our assumptions in the interest of common dialogue is to consider how we would read the Gospels if they were not texts used by a current world religion. The majority of Gospels scholars see the Gospels as ancient biographies. Although ancient biographies varied in their historiographic practice, in the early Empire biographies about figures who lived in the generation or two before the biographer included substantial historical information about the figure. This observation may be particularly relevant for biographies about sages. Schools often preserved considerable information about their founders' teachings; ancient memory practices exceeded what is typical today, and disciples often preserved and passed on considerable information. Researchers should neither treat the Gospels more skeptically nor demand from them greater precision than we would from comparable works of their era.

Abstract:
While non-German biographers of Bismarck have usually kept a healthy distance from their subject, German biographers have often allowed their political and religious views to influence their portraits. Most German historians of the ‘long nineteenth century’ were fascinated by, as Hegel would have called it, the genius of such a ‘world historical individual’. Their work greatly influenced the images of Bismarck during the time of the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. Their counterparts in the 1960s and 1970s, however focused critically on the ‘impersonal’ movements of the Bismarckian empire. These, Marxist influenced, analyses did not include any biographies. It was only in the 1980s that three biographers achieved a politically detached evaluation of the chancellor's personality. With the centenary of Bismarck's death in 1998, a return to the pre-1980s views can be noticed in biographies of the chancellor. They threaten to oversimplify Bismarck's personality and government technique again.
