Abstract:
The article aims to evaluate two biographical books by press professionals as instruments to rescue the history of Brazilian journalism. In the study, two works are analyzed for the performance of both in specific editorials of journalism: sports and cultural, respectively: Juca Kfouri: O militante da notícia (ALENCAR, 2006) and Tinhorão: O legendário (LORENZOTTI, 2010). Through three categories observed in the reading of the biographies - journalistic environment, spaces of belonging and legacy of the biographer -, it appears that the books highlight characteristics of the profession, prioritize the protagonist's memory and assist in the understanding of the Brazilian journalistic past. And, thus, they can serve as a brief script (albeit partial) for a biographical perspective on the history of journalism in important moments of 20th century in Brazil.

Abstract:
The paper presents a narrative perspective on Polish migration to Iceland based on one example of a woman, called Irena. Her biography served for an anthropological analysis used in biographical approach in social sciences with the assumption that the story of one life of a particular person can give some general knowledge – in this case about migration patterns and experiences. The story of Irena presented in this article is also an interesting example of the narrative journalism, since the biography is presented like a non-fiction essay, written by a journalist who accompanied Irena for several months during her stay in Iceland and was actually a part of her migration experience.

Abstract:
The article deals with the topics and themes of materials of V. Portnikov, the well-known political journalist in Ukraine and abroad. The urgency of scientific research is to study and expand the scientific discourse on political journalism, its topics and themes, relevance and reliability of information and introduction of new names. The objective of the study is to identify and analyze the main thematic lines and features of themes of V. Portnikov’s journalistic materials. The task of the study is to carry out a brief biographical analysis, which is necessary for understanding the personality of V. Portnikov; to ascertain and to generalize the thematic range of publicist’s materials; to define the problems of author’s materials through the line of topical issues, political situation and processes in Ukraine and the world as whole; to systematize creativity and professional attitudes of a publicist to political processes, leadership, states, authorities, regimes, etc. that helped in achieving the objective of the study. The methodological basis of the study that consisted of the topics and themes of V. Portnikov’s political journalism was based on the principles of historicity, objectivity, complexity and authenticity. A number of general and specific scientific methods were used to analyze the topics and themes of his publicistic materials. The descriptive method was used to outline the available materials of socio-political themes and topics of a journalist in the Internet outlet “Radio Liberty” for 2017-2018 and the first quarter of 2019. The content analysis method was used to identify the problem-thematic aspect of the publicist’s materials. The biographical method was used in studying the peculiarities of his creative activities and the method of differentiation in work was used to determine the thematic peculiarities and to find out the problematic aspects of his creativity. The qualitative analysis of V. Portnikov’s texts was the leading method of the study. The analysis of the author’s journalistic speeches showed that V. Portnikov accentuated the readers’ attention on the ugent issues, gave an objective and thorough assessment of the current situation. This author lets each topic pass through himself, thereby stimulating and appealing the audience to reflection, and also helped to understand and to rethink the most important sociopolitical processes.

Abstract:
The review article is devoted to the analysis of studies of the Siberian period of F. M. Dostoevsky’s life and work. The main trends in the study of the author’s Siberian text are described. The entire variety of sources may be subdivided into four groups: memoirs and epistolary testimonies; journalism, biographical novels, essays, novellas, etc.; biographical studies; interpretations of Siberian works. One of the main issues is the problem of their reliability. Close to the memoir fraud remain biographical novels, biographical chronicles, documentary novels are close to being memoir falsifications, and so they often contain factual errors or free interpretation of events. They sometimes include home-grown myths about Dostoevsky's stay in Siberia, that were created by local residents. Some of these myths have already been exposed by the scientific approach. The article analyzes the biographical research of V. N. Zakharov, M. M. Gromyko, N. I. Levchenko, V. S. Vainerman, A. S. Shadrina, E. D. Trukhan, V. F. Grishaev and others. These studies are peculiar in that they are usually localized and represent research not into the Siberian text as a whole, but into its constituent parts: those related to Omsk, Kuznetsk, Tobolsk, Barnaul or Semipalatinsk. The article describes both fairly well-known and new biographical materials that have been published recently and significantly enriched the understanding of the Siberian period of the writer's biography and work, and provides an overview of interpretations of Dostoevsky's Siberian works. The paper identifies problems and outlines the perspectives of studying the Siberian text, and determines the archival collections where new documents about Dostoevsky and his environment can be discovered.

Abstract:
This article builds on biographical interviews with public service broadcasting journalists, who have earlier worked for mainstream private media in Kyiv, Ukraine, to argue that journalists, according to their own understandings, engage in several different forms of self-censorship that do not necessarily have a direct relationship to external censorship. I identify and analyse three different forms of self-censorship – pragmatic, ethical and affective – that are simultaneously present in the same professional community of Ukrainian television journalists at a single historical moment, despite the fact that they operate in accordance with distinct logics. Taken together, they offer an empirical basis to challenge scholarly accounts that understand self-censorship as a singular phenomenon. The article proposes some initial analytical parameters and questions for a more nuanced analysis of the empirical heterogeneity of self-censorship.

Abstract:
This text proposes a theoretical approach of the biographical genres from the field of Literary journalism, having in perspective the discursive possibilities involved in this narrative construction. The “writing of oneself” and the “writing of the other” pass through frontiers of discourse in which Literary journalism, as it has been conceived in the contemporary world, also moves. To improve this debate, we bring the knowledge of Narrative and New History theories, in which there is an intense discussion about the work that unites objective data of reality and the capacity to elaborate a discourse that deepens in subjectivities. Our central argument is that Literary journalism, when articulated with biographical texts, can contribute to the theorizing and production of works of these genres. Abstract:
Since the establishment of the Johannes V. Jensen Centre at Aarhus University in 1993, studies of the Nobel Prize winner have shifted from the biographical to the textual. At the same time, the publication especially of early works with critical commentary has intensified. The present article traces some themes throughout a half-century of Jensen’s journalism which was first assembled in book form in 2014 under the title Word and Truth. The material brings more nuance to impressions of the poet’s opinions and positions, also because the anthologizing of his journalistic works has until now and for good reason skimmed only the cream. Now the dregs are considered as well, and even this portion of Jensen’s work impresses with its linguistically seductive energy and fascinating images. Most of the articles Jensen himself agreed to have reprinted and they were included in the so-called mythic volumes. Jensen regarded myth as a special genre, his own reply in all modesty to what H. C. Andersen had done for the fairy tale. Jensen’s journalism spans also biographically from the poet’s native soil in Jutland to distant parts of the world, with the capital as well as rural Tisvilde as important stops along the way. The poet’s efforts to protect nature and the implied archeological interests (not only in a Danish context) are reflected in a number of articles. Just as meaningful, but modernity-oriented, is an enthusiasm for technical development, machinery, traffic on land, sea and air. Life’s origins and the development of the species are viewed in a Darwinist perspective. The present article’s second part deals with Jensen’s tradition-bound understanding of the relationship between the sexes and, in that connection, with his fear of “sexual confusion” often mentioned, most painfully in the 1907 intimidation of his colleague Herman Bang. Finally, attention is given to the part of Jensen’s journalism which portrays his own travels and his writings on others’ contributions to the genre of travel literature.

The article on a significant theoretical basis and an example of the programs “Widow” and “How to Talk?” presents some aspects of the transformation of the genre of “classical” interviews into modern formats. It is proved that the genre is experiencing significant transformations and gaining new features, among which are analyticity, portraiture, journalism. The main strategies reflected in the activity of popular interviewers — Yuri Dud and Irina Shikhman are considered. Among these strategies, the choice of relevant and socially significant topics, provocativeness and intimization, promoting the hero’s self-presentation, independence in assessments, a high level of emotionality and a “biographical” approach, non-linearity of the composition and others are highlighted.

Starck, Nigel, and nigel starck@unisa edu au. "Writes of Passage: a comparative study of newspaper obituary practice in Australia, Britain and the United States." Flinders University. Humanities, 2004. http://catalogue.flinders.edu.au./local/adt/public/adt-SFU20051205.171130.

Abstract:
Australian newspapers in recent years have increased significantly the column space devoted to obituaries. The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian, the Age, the West Australian, the Herald Sun, the Canberra Times, the Advertiser, and the Courier-Mail now publish them in dedicated sections, often allocating an entire page to the obituary art. Their popularity in Australia follows a pattern established during the 1980s in Britain and the United States. Australian practice has been influenced in particular by developments in British journalism, which has seen a phenomenon described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘an odd revival…the rebirth of long newspaper obituaries’.† In its first incarnation, the obituary can be traced to the newsbooks of England which appeared in the 1660s, during the Restoration. It flowered in the 18th century, in the first daily newspapers and magazines; it grew luxuriant, and sometimes ornate, in the 19th century; it became unfashionable and fell into some general neglect in the 20th. Then, with the appointment of reformist editors and, particularly in Britain, the publication of bigger newspapers by an industry no longer subjected to labour restraint, the obituary itself experienced restoration. Though the momentum of renewed practice has been of mutual rapidity on three continents, there are some significant variations in its application. The American product generally favours a style faithful to news-writing principles so far as timing and content are concerned and is frequently expansive when relating the details of surviving family and funeral arrangements. In Britain, the emphasis is more on creative composition and a recitation of anecdotes, with less of a sense of urgency about news value and a consequent accent on character sketch. Both models, in recent years, have displayed a propensity for explicit appraisal and an increasing willingness to publish obituaries of those who have undermined, rather than adorned, society. Newspapers in Australia, while adopting the obituary with apparent fervour, have found their delivery of the product restrained by a lack of resources. Obituary desks in this country are staffed by a solitary journalist-editor. This has resulted in a reliance, often to an unhealthy degree, on contributions by readers. The tone of this material, with its intimacy of address and excess in sentiment, sits uneasily when appearing on the same page as obituaries syndicated from overseas sources. Contemporary obituary publication in the United States has been subjected to some scholarly analysis in terms of gender balance, identification of cause of death, and the demographic mix of its subject selection. This thesis, by means of a six-month content analysis, addresses such questions for the first time in an Australian context. In addition, it examines issues of style, origin and authorship. It finds that cause of death is identified much less than is the case in American obituary practice, that women are significantly under-represented, and that editing is sometimes haphazard. Nevertheless, the accumulated body of evidence points resolutely to a remarkable reinvigoration of practice in Australia’s daily newspapers. The thesis, by discussing the views of specialists in the field of obituary publication, pursues mechanisms for sustaining the momentum and for improving the product.

This work consists of a profile designed in the mold of literary journalism, about the trajectory of the journalist of João Pessoa Hilton Gouvêa, who has been in the press of Paraiba for more than four decades and is considered one of the resisters in the art of reporting in the state. The report-profile was drafted in a diary format, telling the insecurities of a first-time reporter and her involvement with the agenda. To reconstruct the main passages of the story of the character, features such as flashbacks, scene-by-scene descriptions, perspective changes, worked dialogues, life status, and even stream of consciousness were used in the narrative. During the investigation into an attack that the personal reporter suffered in the 1990s, due to a journalistic coverage that he did at the time, the researcher ended up coming to the details of a tragic murder in her own family, occurred when she was still a child, that influenced her entire life trajectory. The narrative, therefore, also gained an autobiographical outline.

Abstract:
This work studies the turinese journalistic world during fascist system, especially the second decade. This decade coincide with the rise of the consensus (1929-1936) before the first time of contestation (1936-1940). The italian journalism is more and more controlled by the political authorities. The repression of the national and regional papers, and then the organization, standardization and institutionalization of the press, change drastically the journalism background. In view of this, this work focuses on collective and individual trajectories, with Turin as study place. The political, social and cultural influences of Turin make this city a particular place for the fascism, hard to “normalize”, and which possess two of the principal papers of the country (the Gazzetta del Popolo and La Stampa). The prosopographical study of the 278 identify journalists allows to put in perspective social characteristics (geographical origins, level of schooling etc...). The national and regional political connections light up the moving mark between politic and journalism and allow to replace the journalism question in the ampler setting of fascist regime and his ambiguities (between control, surveillance and repression, on one hand, and limits of totalitarianism of the other hand). The prosopographical study shows also a clear continuity of journalist between liberal and fascist periods, which questions the image of a harsh and total “purge” of the profession. In this context, the question of the place of the new journalistic generation, technically formed and permeated of fascist ideology, like Ermanno Amicucci and other fascist figures wanted, is central. Finally, the second part of the study takes an interest in a few singular trajectories and compared itineraries, which allows to illustrate a part of the diversity of turinese journalist attitudes, confronted with a regime who wants to institute a “new journalism model”. This trajectories intend to light up more specifically some of central aspects of journalistic world during the regime, like the purge of the years 1927-1931 (with for example Gino Pestelli, Leo Galetto or Santi Savarino),, the connections with local politic world (Angelo Appiotti, Leo Rea) or the racial laws and their impact (Deodoato foà). Between opposition and resignation, acceptation and negotiation, illusions and pragmatism, this biographical trajectories expose some varied positions, insert into a ampler context, which is the fascist ventennio, and his tragedies

Abstract:
The uprising which shook France in May 1968 also had a revolutionary effect on the country's most prominent film journal. Under editors Jean-Louis Comolli and Jean Narboni, Cahiers du cinéma embarked on a militant turn that would govern the journal's work over the next five years. With a Marxist orientation inspired by the thinking of Louis Althusser, Jacques Lacan and Roland Barthes, the "red years" of Cahiers du cinéma produced a theoretical outpouring that was formative for the establishment of film studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s, and is still of vital relevance for the contemporary audiovisual landscape. It was also the seminal experience for a generation of critics who have dedicated the following half-century to the task of critically responding to the cinema. The Red Years of Cahiers du Cinéma (1968-1973) gives a historical overview of this period in the journal's history, combining biographical accounts of the critics who were involved with Cahiers in the post-1968 and theoretical explorations of the text they wrote.

This chapter provides a biographical account of the architect-planner Lionel Brett fourth Viscount Esher. It shows how Brett attempted to combine modernist approaches with a passionate and pioneering commitment to the preservation of the historic urban environment. Brett’s planning work is also shown to have been informed and motivated by his patrician mentality. The chapter shows Brett formulating an approach to cities through his extensive journalism as well as his engagement with the New Towns movement through his planning of Hatfield as well as his involvement in organizations such as the Society for the Promotion of Urban Renewal and the Royal Fine Art Commission. The chapter goes on to give an account of Brett’s plans for Portsmouth and for York. It shows Brett’s profound disillusionment following the commercialization of the urban renewal agenda.

The Afterword examines publications and disclosures made about the connection between A. Alvarez and Sylvia Plath since the first publication of The Alvarez Generation. Its own look at the biographical details of personal relationship between the two writers details the timing of their meetings and the poems Plath recited at them. The Afterword also weighs up the biographical evidence for a possible sexual liaison between Alvarez and Plath, including the testimony of Olwyn Hughes regarding Plath’s journals cited by Ted Hughes’s biographer Jonathan Bate, and settles the question by adding new biographical evidence of its own. The Afterword then reconsiders ‘Beyond the Gentility Principle’ in relation to questions of sex and sexual politics, and re-evaluates Alvarez’s presentations of possible connections between Plath’s poetry and her suicide.

The aim of the article is to present selected types of printed sources of biographical information, showing that it is contained not only in biographical dictionaries. Various traces of human life can also be found in such publications as: parish books published in print; school management reports; lists of students or university graduates; lists of theses; address books of cities; telephone directories; street lists, publications about real estate owners; shematisms; lists of trade representatives; listings of business owners; industry directory books; activity reports or professional journals issued by organizations, associations or unions; spa guest lists; lists of participants in uprisings; lists of the injured; lists of repressed people; hourglasses, obituaries, mourning records; lists of personal losses from the years of war and occupation; cemetery guides. Abstract:
This chapter examines biographical information about the shooters in the context of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. By using a qualitative approach to search for patterns and themes, this study offers a comprehensive evaluation of the presence or absence of many important factors that are found in the reporting of active and mass shooters. Rather than focusing on one major contributing factor, this chapter describes a number of factors, offers descriptive, specific accounts about individual shooters, and organizes a wealth of information from over 1200 news articles, books, and journals into a concise study for future research and evaluation.

Abstract:
The first chapter studies the role of the family in the broader definition of authorship shared by the Perraults’ contemporaries. While modern studies of authorship often stress its legal regulation through censorship and copyright, this chapter shows that the discourse of authorship was much broader, and relied on the “new media” of the seventeenth century, such as biographical dictionaries, learned journals, and realistic novels. By analyzing the discourses that defined the Perraults’ reputations, as well as the representations of literary life more broadly, this chapter establishes the categories that defined authorship in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and the key place of the family and kinship within them.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

Chornodon, Myroslava. FEAUTURES OF GENDER IN MODERN MASS MEDIA. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11064.

Full text
Abstract:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.
