Abstract:
The fields of public history and environmental history emerged independently as professional pursuits during the 1970s. Over time, their practitioners found common ground within problems related to the built and natural environment. Spurred by challenges posed by globalization and climate change, public environmental historians increasingly embraced a transnational perspective. The broad range and scope of public environmental history reflect the diversity of the field’s patrons (including government agencies, courts of law, and cultural and scientific institutions) and the spectrum of concerns associated with society’s interactions with the biophysical world, including pollution, loss of biodiversity, overpopulation, water scarcity, food security, and sustainability.

Abstract:
The most intensively studied societies within Southwest archaeology—the Ancestral “Pueblos”—have been defined by their architecture. Stark village ruins of stone and adobe, some perched high in cliff settings, dot much of the region and are today its major tourist attractions. But as this chapter demonstrates, the architecture and built landscapes of the greater Southwest were vastly more diverse, ranging from the ephemeral wikiup-like structures of early hunter-gatherers, to the various pithouse forms and configurations of the Archaic and later periods, to the monumental trincheras, ball courts, and platform mounds of the southern Southwest, to the great kivas, great houses, and road systems of the Chacoan world. This chapter surveys that diversity and considers the way the built environment has been mobilized as evidence to make claims about social and political organization, religion practice, cosmology, mobility, and scale of collective labor projects within studies of ancient Southwest communities.

Abstract:
Buildings are the dominant feature of urban environments and they are arranged in diverse patterns. Interwoven within and between buildings are a series of infrastructures which deliver materials and energy and remove the products of industrial processes and waste produced as a result of human activities. Urban form, the physical arrangement of elements within urban environments, is a determinant of the liveability of a city. Individual buildings are constructed to a range of designs. These are discussed along with a consideration of the position of private (domestic gardens) and public greenspace (for example, parks) within the wider urban form. Links between urban form and socio-economic status are discussed. Where there is greater wealth, there is a stronger focus on the quality of life and an association with higher levels of vegetation within the urban form.
