About 2,500 specimens of small mammal fossils were collected from 10 localities in the Pliocene Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley, southeast Nevada. The most common taxa are cricetid and heteromyid rodents, and lagomorphs. Twenty-seven species, including five new species, were recognized from the fauna. A new genus of microtine rodent, Nevadomys, including three new species, N. fejfari, N. lindsayi, and N. downsi, is recognized. Nevadomys was probably derived from the Hemphillian Paramicrotoscoptes. Repomys minor n. sp. is another new species of high-crowned cricetid that was detected in the Panaca local fauna. With abundant upper and lower third molars of Repomys, it was possible to amend the diagnoses of genus Repomys. The fifth new species recognized from the fauna is a shrew, Paranotiosorex panacaensis n. gen. and sp. Enamel microstructure of molars of the microtine rodents Mimomys panacaensis and Nevadomys n. gen. from the fauna were examined under the scanning electronic microscope. Mimomys panacaensis shows the same schmelzmuster among different populations. Nevadomys has a more primitive schmelzmuster compared to Mimomys panacaensis. Both its leading and trailing edges are entirely composed of radial enamel. The assemblage of small mammal fossils suggests that the Panaca local fauna represents the early Blancan land mammal age. The first appearance datum of Mimomys panacaensis is suggested as the beginning of Blancan land mammal age, and the absolute age of the lowest stratigraphic datum of M. panacaensis in the Panaca Formation is interpolated from magnetostratigraphy and is considered as the age of the Hemphillian-Blancan boundary. The magnetostratigraphy of the Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley is established based on four sections in the basin. The ash in the Rodent Hill section was dated at 4.64 +/- 0.03 Ma, which constrains the correlation of the reversed polarity magnetozone in the Rodent Hill section to the C3n.2r in the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS). The other three sections are correlated to the Rodent Hill section based on the ashes. The Panaca Formation in Meadow Valley was deposited from 4.50--5.30 Ma, and the Hemphillian-Blancan boundary is around 4.95 Ma, close to the termination of Thvera Subchron in the GPTS.

L’étude des faunes du Quaternaire s’inscrit dans une dynamique de connaissance des paléoenvironnements et est de ce fait nécessaire pour mieux cerner les contraintes environnementales qui ont rythmé la dispersion des hominidés sur l’ensemble des continents. Le genre Canis, autour duquel nous avons axé ce travail de recherche, présente la particularité d’être resté constamment présent en Europe occidentale depuis son apparition, il y a plus de trois millions d’années, jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Cette constance fait de lui, malgré son caractère ubiquiste, un excellent témoin de l’évolution des paléoenvironnements.A travers l’analyse de la variabilité des populations actuelles et l’étude de dix séries fossiles du Sud de la France couvrant le Pléistocène, de nouveaux éléments de discussion sont avancés sur l’évolution des représentants du genre. Nos résultats, couplés à l’analyse critique des données bibliographiques nous ont dès lors permis de proposer une nouvelle phylogénie. Cette dernière permet non seulement de mieux cerner les phases d’apparition et de dispersion des différentes espèces du genre Canis, mais également de démontrer son potentiel biochronologique. Ainsi, trois grandes phases dans l’évolution du genre ont pu être mises en évidence. La transition de ces espèces est corrélée à de grands événements de l’histoire des faunes quaternaires (bioevent) et autorise de ce fait l’utilisation de cette phylogénie à des fins biochronologiques ainsi qu’une discussion autour des relations entre ces espèces et les paléocommunautés animales et humaines<br>Quaternary mammals form an important part of the material available for researchers focusing on paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Their study is thus often used to infer the environmental constraints that set the pace of human dispersal through the world. The genus Canis, main subject of this thesis, is present in Western Europe since its origin three million years ago. This continuous presence makes it a good candidate as a paleoenvironmental proxy, even when considering its ecological plasticity.The study of ten fossil sequences from Southern France spanning the Pleistocene, coupled with the analysis of the variability of modern populations, bring new insights on the evolution of the members of this lineage. Our results, once confronted to previous studies, allowed us to propose a new phylogeny. This new framework permits a better understanding of the apparition and disappearance of the different species, but also demonstrates the biochronological potential of the Canis genus. Three major phases have been identified in its evolutionary history. The transition between the different Canids is correlated with major events in the history of quaternary mammals (bioevent). Thus, its phylogeny can be used for biochronological purposes and has to be considered in the bigger debates that focus on the interactions between animal communities and human groups

Riversleigh, World Heritage Property, located in North-western Queensland, Australia, contains over 200 fossil bearing localities from the Oligo-Miocene. The study presented here aims at finding new methods to improve the accuracy of palaeoecological and biochronological studies and describe the palaeoenvironmental and chronological settings of the Riversleigh fossil deposits. One of the methods developed in this thesis, Minimum Sample Richness (MSR), determines the minimum number of species that must be present in a fauna to allow meaningful comparisons using multivariate analyses. Using MSR, several Riversleigh localities were selected for a palaeoecological study using the cenogram method to determine the palaeoenvironment during the Oligo-Miocene. Finally, the Numerical ages method was used to refine the relative ages of the Riversleigh localities and a re-diagnosis of the Riversleigh Systems is proposed.

The Inferior Oolite Formation of southern England is one of the foundations and testing grounds for the biostratigraphy of the Aalenian, Bajocian and lowermost Bathonian stages of the Middle Jurassic. The successions are highly discontinuous both vertically and laterally, comprising thin, lenticular deposits initially seemingly of limited use for standard chronostratigraphy. The beds are highly fossiliferous and are the source of many nominal genera and species of the classical literature introduced by S.S. Buckman. Publications herein represent a lifetime's work and incorporate research that focuses on the re-exposure, collecting and recording of the stratigraphical succession of many historical locations. This thesis reexamines, refines and advances the understanding of the biostratigraphy of the Inferior Oolite ammonite assemblages of Dorset and Somerset and is an important resource for comparison with many areas worldwide and for which this author provides commentary. Critical assessment is made of new, large, in situ, collections of well-preserved specimens made by the author, supported by data and evaluation against types in several museums. New taxa are erected accordingly. Specimens have been prepared using state of the art methods that allow evaluation of the complete shells, stages of growth and sexual dimorphism. The precise levels from which almost all of Buckman's Inferior Oolite specimens came is now known and this has enabled the variability of the fauna at discrete levels to be assessed, and has eliminated many ambiguities in the literature, to select those names that are useful and to decide which must be abandoned. Interpretation is made of patterns of ammonite migration, provincialism and Middle Jurassic biogeography. Distinguishable biohorizon lists present the biostratigraphy of the ammonites alongside correlation charts. Presently (2017), in the British Aalenian, there are 18. In the Lower Bajocian, there are 30 and the Upper Bajocian has 11 with 3 faunal horizons identified that require further study. Only the earliest Bathonian strata are considered and 3 horizons are recognised to date. It is therefore possible to discriminate 62 biohorizons in Dorset and Somerset for strata of the Aalenian-lowest Bathonian.

Fossil bearing continental deposits, the Gila Conglomerate, of the Safford and Duncan Basins, Arizona were correlated with the magnetic polarity time scale by means of magnetostratigraphy and biochronology of mammalian fossils. Within the Safford Basin, the Bear Springs section with a middle Blancan fauna is correlated with the lower or upper Gauss chron; the 111 Ranch section with a middle to late Blancan fauna is correlated with the upper Gauss to early Matuyama chrons; and the San Simon Power Line section with probably a latest Blancan fauna is correlated with the early Matuyama chron. In the Duncan Basin, the Duncan section with a middle Blancan fauna is correlated with the middle Gauss chron; the Pearson Mesa section with a middle Blancan fauna is correlated with the Upper Gauss chron; and the Country Club section with a middle Blancan fauna is correlated with the latest Gilbert to early Gauss chrons or from the middle Gauss to the earliest Matuyama chrons. A late Blancan fauna is not recognized in the Duncan Basin at least within the study area, whereas the Gila Conglomerate in the Safford Basin includes deposits and fauna of the latest Blancan (latest Pliocene) age. A minimum of 37 taxa of small mammals are recognized among the approximately 1,600 specimens from the Gila Conglomerate of the Safford and Duncan Basins. Three new rodent species are described; they are Pappogeomys (Cratogeomys) sansimonensis, new species; Reithrodontomys galushai, new species; and Repomys arizonensis, new species. One new combination of genus and species, Hypolague virginiae, is described. In the Safford Basin, a minimum of 26 small mammal taxa are now recognized in the 111 Ranch fauna, of which three genera (Dipodomys, Peromyscus, and Repomys) are new records to the fauna; a minimum of 6 taxa of small mammals are recognized and described for the first time in the San Simon Power Line fauna. In the Duncan Basin, a minimum of 15 small mammal taxa are recognized and described for the first time.

L'Afrique nord-occidentale, ou le Maghreb, occupe une position géographique toute particulière car bien que partie intégrante du continent africain, elle possède une façade septentrionale intégrée au domaine méditerranéen et un domaine méridional semi-désertique ou désertique. Dans un premier lieu, des études paléomagnétiques et biostratigraphiques basées sur la faune de rongeurs ont été effectuées sur des dépôts continentaux de deux bassins algériens (Tafna et El Eulma). L'étude magnétostratigraphique réalisée dans ce travail a permis de dater avec précision les différents gisements fossilifères et de les corréler avec les autres bassins néogènes d'Afrique du Nord.Dans la seconde partie, les nouvelles prospections paléontologiques dans le bassin d'Aït Kandoula au Maroc méridional ont amené à découvrir trois gisements fossilifères datés du Miocène terminal. Ces gisements ont livré une riche faune de micromammifères associés à des restes de grands mammifères. L'étude systématique des micromammifères et plus particulièrement des rongeurs des deux gisements AF12-1 et AF12-2 a permis d'identifier des taxons qui ont des affinités avec ceux d'Europe sud-occidentale. Ces deux nouveaux sites ont fourni de nouvelles indications quant aux échanges de faunes entre l'Afrique et l'Europe. Le genre Stephanomys est notamment signalé pour la première fois au Maroc. L'étude biochronologique couplée avec l'étude magnétostratigraphique a permis de bien dater ces gisements, apportant ainsi des indications fiables quant à la chronologie de différentes phases d'échanges fauniques entre l'Afrique nord-occidentale et l'Europe sud-occidentale. Les premiers échanges fauniques ont eu lieu 0,25 Ma avant la crise de salinité messinienne. En outre, certains taxons identifiés dans AF12-2 (Myocricetodon, Protatera, Atlantoxerus) se révèlent utiles comme indicateurs paléoenvironnementaux, attestant des conditions climatiques chaudes et sèches<br>North-western Africa, or the Maghreb, occupies a special geographic position, being an integral part of the African continent, but also consisting of an integrated northern Mediterranean area and of a semi-desert or desertic southern area. In the first part, paleomagnetic and biostratigraphic studies based on rodent faunas were carried on continental deposits of two Algerian basins (Tafna and El Eulma). The magnetostratigraphic study realized in this work allowed to estimate the age of various fossiliferous deposits, and to correlate them with various other Neogene basins of North Africa.In the second part, new paleontological prospections in the Aït Kandoula basin (Morocco) led to the discovery of three fossiliferous deposits dated back to late Miocene. These deposits delivered a rich micromammalian fauna associated with large mammal remains. The systematic study of small mammals and especially rodents of deposits from both AF12-1 and AF12-2 allowed identifying taxa which have affinities with those of south-western Europe. These two new localities provide new information on the exchanges of faunas between Africa and Europe. The genus Stephanomys is reported here for the first time in Morocco. The biochronologic and magnetostratigraphic studies provide reliable information for the chronology of various phases of faunal exchanges between north-western Africa and south-western Europe. Faunal exchanges took place 0.25 Ma before the Messinian Salinity Crisis. In addition, some of the taxa identified in AF12-2 (Myocricetodon, Protatera, Atlantoxerus), are useful as paleoenvironmental indicators, attesting warm and dry climatic conditions

La sablière de Khok Sung, dans la province de Nakhon Ratchasima, qui a livré plus d'un millier de fossiles de mammifères et de reptiles (cranes, dents isolées et restes post-craniens), abrite la faune de vertébrés du Pléistocène la plus riche de Thaïlande. La faune mammalienne qui est décrite ici en détail, se compose d'au moins 18 espèces identifiées (12 genres), y compris un primate et des proboscidiens, rhinocéros, suidés, bovidés, cervidés et carnivores. Elle compte principalement des taxons encore représentés de nos jours, ainsi que quelques taxons globalement ou localement éteints. A partir des données paléomagnétiques et des comparaisons fauniques, l'âge de la faune de Khok Sung est estimé au Pléistocène Moyen tardif, vers 188000 ou 213000 ans. Par rapport aux autres faunes diversifiées du Pléistocène d'Asie du Sud Est, l'assemblage de Khok Sung est caractérisé par une association des taxons Stegodon-Ailuropoda, comparable en cela au site de Thum Wiman Nakin, ce qui supporte l'hypothèse selon laquelle le Nord Est de la Thaïlande était un corridor biogéographique appartenant à la route migratoire Sino-Malaise, entre la Chine du Sud et l'île de Java. L'analyse des isotopes stables du carbone à partir de l'émail des ongulés fossiles révèle la présence d'une partition de niches entre les méga-herbivores et au sein des cervidés. Les valeurs du d13C de l'émail suggèrent également que les ruminants ont consommé une grande quantité de plantes en C4, ce qui indique que les prairies à graminées étaient particulièrement répandues en Thaïlande à cette époque où les écosystèmes n'étaient pas encore soumis à l'influence anthropique. La mesure des isotopes stables de l'oxygène, obtenue par échantillonnage sérié de l'émail des dents de grands mammifères, et l'analyse du cénogramme de la localité de Khok Sung reflètent une importante variation saisonnière des précipitations et de la température, associée à des conditions climatiques relativement humides<br>The Khok Sung sand pit, Nakhon Ratchasima province, has yielded the richest Pleistocene vertebrate fauna of Thailand, where more than a thousand fossil mammals and reptiles (skulls, isolated teeth, and postcranial remains) were recovered. The mammalian fauna, which is described in details hereby, consists of at least 18 identified species (12 genera), including a primate, proboscideans, rhinoceroses, suids, bovids, cervids, and carnivores, which are characterized by mostly extant elements associated to some completely and locally extinct taxa. The age of the Khok Sung fauna is tentatively attributed to the late Middle Pleistocene as either 188 or 213 ka, based on the paleomagnetic data and on the faunal comparisons. The Khok Sung mammal assemblage yields the Stegodon-Ailuropoda faunal association, most similar in composition to that of Thum Wiman Nakin, supporting the hypothesis that northeastern Thailand was a biogeographic gateway of the Sino-Malayan migration route from South China to Java. An analysis of stable carbon isotopes extracted from the tooth enamel of fossil ungulates reveals evidence of niche partitioning among megaherbivores and within cervids. The enamel carbonate d13C values also suggest a considerable amount of C4 plants in the dietary use of ruminants, indicating that grasslands had significantly expanded in Thailand at that time during which anthropic impacts on the ecosystems were absent. The stable oxygen isotope results, obtained from the serial sampling of large mammal enamel, combined with the cenogram analysis reflect significant seasonal variation in precipitations and temperature for Khok Sung, associated to a relatively humid climate

This work focus on evolution of small mammals assemblages in the Italian peninsula during Upper Pleistocene and on the analysis of differences between synchronous faunas of various zones. Data obtained from the study of micromammals of Caverna degli Orsi (San Dorligo della Valle, Dolina, Trieste), Ciota Ciara (Borgosesia, Vercelli) Riparo Mochi (Ventimiglia, Imperia), Grotta Paglicci (Rignano Garganico, Foggia) e Riparo Tagliente (Stallavena di Grezzana, Verona) have been presented in order to provide evidences from important Upper Pleistocene sequences and to throw light on this subject. For each species it has been given a brief description of systematics, ecology, geographic distribution and presumable modifications occurred during the last phases of Pleistocene. Furthermore, reviwing and rearranging before-known Italian sites, it was possible to make general remarks on environmental changes and on chronology of faunal associations under examination. The analysis of small mammals shows that Italian peninsula can be divided into geographic zones presenting several different landscapes and biodiversity grades. Specifically, in northern Adriatic zone, Valpadana and piedmont bend species coming from Eastern Europe, such as Microtus oeconomus and Sicista betulina, are present; southern Adriatic zone is characterized by marked aridity and low biodiversity degree while southern Thyrrenian zone display richer assemblages normally associated with wooden environments. Finally, all the results have been processed in order to suggest a biochronological model as detailed as possible, in which the most important sequences of Italian peninsula have been positioned and linked to the isotopic curve.

En Europe de l’Ouest, de nombreuses espèces de léporidés sont endémiques, ce qui en fait de bons témoins de l’évolution des écosystèmes terrestres dans lesquelles ont évolué les sociétés humaines préhistoriques. Paradoxalement, leur variabilité morphologique est mal connue et la phylogénie établie aujourd’hui, discutable. Ce travail propose de renseigner la diversité morphométrique des lapins et des lièvres sur près de deux millions d’années d’évolution, à travers l’application d’études ostéométriques et en morphométrie géométrique. L’analyse de restes osseux et dentaires – de populations actuelles et de 73 séries fossiles provenant de régions périméditerranéennes couvrant le Pléistocène – permet de caractériser les adaptations des léporidés face aux changements environnementaux et leurs tendances évolutives. Cette étude propose une nouvelle phylogénie pour le lapin et présente les différentes phases de dispersion des taxons à l’échelle de l’Europe occidentale. Ainsi, plusieurs événements de type expansion des populations, recolonisation des territoires depuis des zones refuges et extinctions locales, sont mis en évidence en réponse aux changements climatiques globaux. Ces résultats permettent de discuter la présence de ces petits gibiers dans l’environnement et alimente le débat sur les relations entre ces espèces et les communautés humaines. Leur augmentation significative dans la diète des groupes humains à la fin du Paléolithique supérieur, ne semble pas seulement s’expliquer par des changements cognitifs, culturels ou économiques, mais coïncide davantage avec les variations biogéographiques de ces espèces<br>Fossil remains of small mammals of the Leporidae family are abundant in numerous paleontological and archaeological deposits from the Quaternary. Many species are endemic to Western Europe, which makes them reliable markers of change in the ecosystems in which prehistoric human societies evolved. Paradoxically, morphological variability of leporids is still poorly understood and current phylogeny remains a subject of debate. This work focuses on the morphometric diversity of rabbits (Oryctolagus) and hares (Lepus) over nearly two million years of evolution. We applied osteometry and geometric morphometric analyzes to bone and dental remains of current populations and 73 fossil samples from perimediterranean regions (Spain, France, Italy, Portugal) during different moments of the Pleistocene. These data provide insights concerning Leporidae adaptations to environmental change as well as more general evolutionary trends. Here we propose a new phylogeny for the genus Oryctolagus and present different dispersion phases for Western Europe. Several population expansion events coupled with the recolonization of refuge areas and local extinctions are highlighted in response to global climate change. These results allow us to discuss the presence of these small game species in the environment and contribute to the debate concerning relations between leporids and human communities. Humans have regularly consumed leporids since at least the Middle Paleolithic. Their significant increase in the diet at the end of the Upper Paleolithic, however, cannot be explained solely by cognitive, cultural or economic changes but rather coincides with biogeographic variations of these species

Des les annees 1960, certains biostratigraphes ont tente de quantifier les processus de construction d'une echelle biostratigraphique. De nombreux protocoles ont ete developpes (plus de cent references bibliographiques consacrees a la methodologie). Cependant, la majorite des biostratigraphes n'adherent pas a cette demarche. L'objet de cette these est double: (1) recensement des methodes disponibles et analyse complete des procedes utilises (methode des distances minimales, methode de shaw, d'edwards, analyse de groupe, analyse en composantes principales, lateral tracing, methodes probabilistes de classement et d'echelonnement d'evenements biostratigraphiques (methode de hay modifiee, methode du tri preliminaire, procedure d'echelonnement, methode deterministe des associations unitaires). (2) application de ces methodes a 4 groupes paleontologistes differents (2 groupes planctoniques (radiolaires et foraminiferes), un groupe benthique (ostracodes) et un groupe nectonique (ammonites)). Les resultats font ressortir que les procedures probabilistes sont inadaptees a la resolution du probleme biochronologique. Les syntheses qu'elles proposent ne sont jamais conformes a la realite et ne respectent pas l'integrite des donnees. A l'inverse, la methode des associations unitaires permet de realiser une echelle rendant un compte exact ou optimal des relations stratigraphiques exprimees entre les especes considerees

Une riche faune d'ammonites du callovien superieur provenant de l'ouest de la france (anjou et poitou), collectee in situ, a fourni de nombreux exemplaires de distichoceratinae qui ont permis une restructuration complete de la sous-famille. La presente etude traite de la systematique et de la dynamique evolutive d'une population a effectif reduit, (1-5% des populations successives) ; vingt et une morphoespeces definies selon une conception populationnelle ont ete detaillees : sept sont nouvelles. Des sous-especes chronologiques ont ete distinguees pour deux lignees specifiques a evolution graduelle : onze ont ete decrites dont six nouvelles. L'etude phyletique des distichoceratinae conduit a distinguer seulement deux sous-genres distichoceras s. S. Et geminites nov. Subgen. . La classification purement typologique et largement artificielle (moore, 1957) est abandonnee. Le schema phyletique montre nettement l'origine monophyletique de la sous-famille et plusieurs phases de reorganisation importante ; une fois individualisees, les morphoespeces evoluent plus ou moins graduellement. La distribution stratigraphique des distichoceras s. I. Est etablie ; les especes pourraient etre raisonnablement utilisees comme biomarqueurs dans le cadre d'une zonation parallele pour le callovien moyen et le callovien superieur de l'europe occidentale. L'apparition de la sous-famille est beaucoup plus precoce que precedemment suppose, (sommet du callovien moyen) ; elle se produit des la limite callovien inferieur-moyen. Distichoceras s. S. Apparait a la base de la zone a coronatum et n'est plus cantonne au callovien superieur comme communement admis. Leur disparition au sommet du callovien superieur s'effectue tres rapidement. Les distichoceratinae montrent une grande extension paleogeographique au cours du temps. D'abord confines, semble-t-il, a la province submediterraneenne (domaine tethysien) durant le callovien moyen, ils atteignent une repartition semi-cosmopolite avec l'espece bicostatum au cours callovien superieur (de la province andine du domaine pacifique jusqu'aux provinces indo-malgache et himalayenne, i. E. A travers toute la tethys).

Le genre Arvicola est considéré comme un outil biostratigraphique majeur pour l’étude du Quaternaire. Les déterminations spécifiques d’après l’indice d’émail, SDQ, ont identifié plusieurs chronoespèces au sein de l’espèce Arvicola cantiana. Cette étude réapprécie le genre Arvicola en terme de morphodiversité et d’espaces morphologiques en utilisant l’analyse de contour et la biométrie. Ces méthodes suggèrent qu’une seule espèce fossile, Arvicola cantiana, était présente durant le Pléistocène. La grande tolérance climatique de cette espèce lui permet d’être répandue durant le Pléistocène moyen et le Pléistocène supérieur, pendant les deux périodes glaciaire et interglaciaire. Notre étude expose la grande plasticité phénotypique permettant à l’espèce de résister à des changements majeurs de l’environnement. Ces résultats remettent en question la fiabilité du SDQ pour les déterminations spécifiques et jette un doute sur l’élaboration d’une structure biochronologique basée sur Arvicola<br>The water vole, genus Arvicola, is used as a major biostratigraphic tool within the Quaternary. Specific determinations using the enamel quotient, SDQ, have identified many chronospecies within the species Arvicola cantiana. This study reappraises the Arvicola genus in term of morphodiversity and morphospace using outline analysis and linear measurements. These methods suggest that one single species of Arvicola, Arvicola cantiana, was present during the Pleistocene. The wide climatic tolerance of the species allows it to be widespread during the late Middle and Upper Pleistocene, in both glacial and interglacial periods. Our study displays the large phenotypic plasticity allows this species to resist to major environment changes. Thus, these results call into question the reliability of SDQ for specific determinations and throw doubt on the biochronological framework based on Arvicola

L'étude des restes de vertébrés néogènes de la région de Fitzcarrald (Sud Pérou), et en particulier celle des astrapothériidés a permis de définir la faune locale de Fitzcarrald, de lui attribuer un âge Laventien (fin du Miocène moyen) et de montrer que cette faune a évolué dans le contexte du marine-like megalake Pebas complex. Des comparaisons fauniques avec d'autres gisements sud-américains confirment que des barrières environnementales et/ou géographiques isolaient probablement le Nord et le Sud de l'Amérique du Sud au cours du Miocène moyen. D'autre part, les palynomorphes récoltés dans la région d'Iquitos (Nord Pérou) sont interprétés comme représentatifs de la fin du Miocène moyen. Leur paléoenvironnement a également été déterminé comme correspondant à celui du marine-like megalake Pebas complex. La datation et l'interprétation écologique de ces deux ensembles permettent de confirmer que l'organisation du réseau hydrographique et la biodiversité actuelle du bassin amazonien ne se sont mis en place qu'après le Miocène moyen<br>The study of vertebrate remains from the Fitzcarrald area (South Peru), and particularly that of astrapotheriid native ungulates, allowed characterising the "Fitzcarrald local fauna", restricting its stratigraphic range to the late Middle Miocene (Laventan), and showing that it evolved in the context of the Marine-like megalake Pebas complex. Faunal comparison with other South American vertebrate localities confirms the occurrence of environmental and/or geographical barriers between northern and southern South America at that time. Moreover, palynomorphs recovered in the Iquitos area (North Peru) have been interpreted as indicating a late Middle Miocene age. Their paleoenvironment was also determined as congruent to the Marine-like megalake Pebas complex. Le principal objet de ce travail etait de reconstituer l'histoire evolutive des rongeurs de thailande au cours des 3 derniers millions d'annees (plio-pleistocene) ainsi que celle des changements ayant affecte les paleoenvironnements de cette region du monde. 20 gisements de rongeurs, repartis dans tout le pays, ont ete decouverts dans des karsts et des grottes et ont fait l'objet de cette etude. 41 especes de rongeurs ont ete inventoriees dont 30 murinae parmis lesquels 2 genres nouveaux, ratchaburimys et prohadromys, et 7 especes nouvelles ont ete decrites et 11 sciuridae, dont 6 especes d'ecureuils volants. La plupart de ces especes existent encore en thailande ou autour, en indochine ou dans le domaine sundaique. D'importants changements dans la repartition geographique des especes ont pu etre mis en evidence au cours de cet intervalle de temps. Comme seuls des caracteres dentaires ont pu etre utilises pour identifier les taxons, leur validite a ete testee par des analyses cladistiques qui ont permis d'etablir les relations de parente entre les differents taxons. Des relations de parente inedites ont ainsi ete mises en evidence. L'identification des taxons, les changements dans la composition des communautes et les changements dans la repartition geographique ont ete utilises pour esquisser un cadre biochronologique qui devrait permettre de dater les formations sedimentaires qui livreront des rongeurs fossiles. Differentes methodes ont ete utilisees a cette fin, analyse des correspondances, methode de parcimonie, indice de similarite probabiliste, pour valider les donnees par une approche quantitative. Cette echelle biochronologique est etalonnee a partir de quelques rares donnees chronologiques absolues obtenues sur la calcite de grottes par la methode u/th. Les changements dans la composition des communautes et dans les repartitions geographiques mettent en evidence l'importance des changements climatiques qui se sont produits pendant le plio-pleistocene en asie du sud-est. Pour la thailande, seules des donnees relatives a l'holocene etaient connues. Les rongeurs mettent en evidence l'existence, au tertiaire final, d'une vegetation plus ouverte avec des etendues herbacees plus importantes et un climat marque par plus de saisonalite. Au cours du pleistocene, la saisonalite se reduit progressivement, et la foret humide se repand de plus en plus. Les rongeurs de la grotte des serpents, qui datent de la fin du pleistocene moyen, temoignent d'un climat humide mais plus frais qu'actuellement, correspondant a un abaissement d'environ 1000 metres des zones de vegetation par rapport a l'actuel. Ce developpement des forets humides est mis en rapport avec la radiation des especes du genre rattus, dont le nombre augmente progressivement au cours du quaternaire. Ainsi, l'evolution generale du climat de la thailande au plio-pleistocene parait bien en accord avec certains modeles climatiques globaux qui considerent l'elevation du plateau du tibet comme la cause principale du refroidissement climatique global et local et de l'augmentation des precipitations en asie du sud-est.

Les thalattosuchia, crocodiles marins du mesozoique, sont connus dans les sediments depuis le debut du xixeme siecle. Le nombre plethorique d'especes creees (plus de 190) nous a amene a mettre en doute la validite de certaines. L'absence de caracteres diagnosiques clairement identifies ne permettait pas de preciser les relations phylogenetiques. L'etude synthetique de la biologie et de l'eco-ethologie des crocodiles actuels permet de mieux apprehender les phenomenes associes aux variations intraspecifiques. L'anatomie du complexe de la manducation et la croissance ontogenique des differentes structures craniennes sont analysees et detaillees. L'analyse morphologique des caracteres des thalattosuchia est essentiellement basee sur le materiel du callovien de la region de poitiers qui se caracterise par la precision de sa datation biochronologique et par son remarquable etat de conservation. L'etude biometrique et graphique est effectuee a l'aide de la quasi-totalite des cranes decouverts en europe. Ces analyses permettent de definir des caracteres diagnosiques puis de les tester grace a la connaissance des variations intraspecifiques chez les crocodiles actuels. Les modalites de la croissance du crane des thalattosuchia sont precisees. De nouvelles relations phylogenetiques sont proposees puis discutees. De nouveaux taxons sont crees, permettant ainsi a la systematique de mieux refleter la biodiversite de ces crocodiles marins. Un inventaire de toutes les decouvertes de thalattosuchia est etabli, tenant compte a la fois de la systematique, de la paleogeographie et de l'age des gisements. La correlation biochronologique des principales formations est proposee. Les capacites de dispersions sont precisees pour chacune des deux super-familles: teleosauroidea et metriorhynchoidea. Ces nouvelles hypotheses permettent d'apporter d'importantes precisions sur l'evolution de la paleogeographie durant le jurassique

Ce travail repose sur l'étude de vingt-deux nouveaux gisements de micromammifères du miocène et du pliocène d'Algérie orientale ayant livre dix-sept espèces nouvelles. Il aboutit à la révision des zramys et des paraethomys en Afrique du nord, permet de préciser l'origine du genre zramys et met en évidence l'existence de deux espèces de zramys dans un même site. Pour la première fois, les genres progonomys et paraethomys sont rencontrés dans le même gisement. Golunda et protolophiomys sont découverts au Maghreb, représentés par de nouvelles espèces. Le seul site attribuable au messénien en Afrique du nord fournit, avec ses formes d'origine essentiellement européenne (stephanomys, ruscinomys, apodemus gudrunae et castillomys), de nouvelles indications quant aux échanges fauniques du miocène terminal entre l'Europe et l'Afrique; de plus, la faune espagnole de salobrena semble devoir être considérée comme d'origine maghrébine. La connaissance des faunes du miocène moyen du nord de l'Afrique est désormais plus précise, et un nouveau genre de myocricetodontinae a pu y être décrit. Les principales périodes de renouvellement faunique sont mises en évidence, et la durée de vie des taxons miocènes est étudiée. Des précisions nouvelles sont données sur l'âge de divers gisements déjà connus dans le nord de l'Afrique. L'ensemble de ces résultats permet de distinguer de nouveaux niveaux repères, et de proposer pour l'Afrique nord-occidentale une biozonation fondée sur les micromammifères, ainsi que des corrélations avec les échelles bio chronologiques établies en Europe

L'Etude des formations d'âge crétacé supérieur et tertiaire du bassin côtier congolais est réalisée à partir d'une démarche pluridisciplinaire intégrant les données biostratigraphiques (foraminifères et nannofossiles), pétrographiques, diagraphiques et sismiques. Une représentation sous forme de log synthétique a permis d'harmoniser l'ensemble des résultats fournis par ces différents outils. 1) biochronologie et paléoenvironnements: l'analyse biostratigraphique a permis de mettre en évidence plusieurs unités chronostratigraphiques dont le coniacien, le santonien, le campanien, le maastrichtien, le paléocene, l'éocene inférieur, l'eocène moyen, l'eocène superieur pro parte, l'oligocene inferieur, l'oligocène moyen et le miocène inférieur. L'évolution des assemblages fauniques couplée a d'autres critères paléoenvironnementaux (configurations sédimentaires et critères pétrographiques) a permis de définir les paléomilieux et de cerner le mode d'agencement spatio-temporel des dépôts. 2) stratigraphie séquentielle: un modèle de dépôt fondé sur les concepts de la stratigraphie séquentielle élaborée par Haq & al. (1988) est proposé et semble particulièrement valable pour la période du turonien et du sénonien. En effet, 17 séquences de dépôts de 3eme ordre sont reconnues pour cette période dont 4 dans le turonien (dolomies de Loango) et 15 (dont 2 hypothétiques) dans le sénonien (marnes de madingo inférieures). Ce découpage est cohérent avec la charte actuellement utilisée a l'échelle de l’Europe occidentale (Thierry & al. , 1992). Une vingtaine de discontinuités ont été définies et hiérarchisées au sein des séries très érodées du paléogène et du néogène. Après calage biostratigraphique, ces discontinuités ont été ajustées avec le diagramme des cycles eustatiques. En définitive, dans le bassin congolais, l'évolution sédimentaire pendant le crétacé et le tertiaire apparait largement déterminée par les variations relatives du niveau marin

In my PhD project, I’ve studied calcareous nannofossil assemblages from three different sites during the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO). The MECO is a global transient short-lived hyperthermal episode characterized by a global prominent perturbation both in oxygen and carbon stable isotopes, it occurred at Chron C18r-C18n transition (ca. 40 Ma) and lasted ca. 500-600 kyr (Bohaty et al., 2009). It represents a significant climate reversal during the Middle-Late Eocene long-term cooling trend. The MECO event is one of several hyperthermal events occurred in the Paleogene, after the well known Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (Kennett and Stott, 1991). Actually, interest in these issues is raising because they are considered potential analogues in the past of the expected global warming we are going to experience in the next future. The most accredited hypothesis regarding the onset of the MECO warming involves a huge CO2 degassing event, linked to major plate tectonic reorganization, occurred during the Eocene (Bohaty et al., 2009). The study sections are located in different depositional settings and geographical areas. In particular, the first study succession, the Alano section, is set in north-eastern Southern Alps of the Veneto region and spans the middle to late Eocene. From a paleogeographic point of view, the section has a paleodepth of 600-1000 m and belongs to the Belluno Basin in the central-western Tethys; the second study section was recovered from IODP Site 1333 during Exp.320 in the Equatorial Pacific. The paleodepth estimate for this Site is ca. 3800 m, while the modern water depth is ca. 4800. The third study section was recovered during ODP Leg 171B located in the Blake Nose (NW Atlantic) with a paleodepth of ca. 1500 m. The first aim of this study is to verify if there is a unique and global change of calcareous nannofossil assemblages in response to the MECO event. A wide spectrum of paleodepositional settings and locations (Alano section, Site 1051A and U1333C) has been analyzed during this extreme paleoclimatic phase eventually providing paleoenviromental reconstructions based on modifications observed in calcareous nannofossil assemblages. The second aim of this study is focused on biostratigraphic and biochronologic issues related to Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene interval, with a special emphasis on the MECO. Standard and additional biohorizons have been tested and compared with previous data available from literature, providing estimates of the degree of reliability of considered bioevents and of their calibrations. The first chapter of this thesis is a brief general overview of the early Paleogene paleoclimatic evolution, followed by a description of the study materials and common methods and strategies adopted in this work. In the second chapter of this thesis, a high resolution study on calcareous nannofossil across the MECO event is presented. Our data from the middle-bathial Alano section indicate that the MECO interval seems to coincide with significant changes in calcareous nannofossil assemblages. Eutrophic/cold taxa and reworked specimens show an overall increase in abundance during the warming event. Conversely, oligotrophic/warm taxa are characterized by a peculiar anticovariant trend with respect to meso-eutrophic taxa, decreasing significantly during the MECO and post-MECO intervals. These results are interpreted as a transient enrichment in dissolved nutrients in warmer sea surface waters and suggest that the enhanced availability of nutrient in the water column overrides other environmental factors in the make-up of calcareous nannofossil assemblage. Morevover, the increase in reworking is consistent with an augment in terrigenous input, likely due to accelerated chemical weathering triggered by the enhanced hydrological cycle. In the third chapter of this thesis, I provide results of sediments recovered from IODP Exp. 320 (U1333C - Pacific Equatorial Ocean) in a time interval comprised from the Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene. These data show dramatic changes in preservation state, with the number of specimens counted on a specific area (1 mm2) virtually collapsing to zero during the MECO event. In the same interval, we also observed changes in calcareous nannofossil assemblages that are consistent with strong dissolution phenomena. As already said, a strong decrease of specimens/mm2 is clear, but a even stronger argument for pervasive dissolution conditions is based on the fact that if we consider the relative abundance (%) of the most resistant genus, Discoaster, there is a remarkable increase of this taxon, as it is expected if the pristine assemblages were altered/biased by preferential dissolution. At Site U1333C, the MECO can be considered a semi-barren interval and thus any paleoenviromental inference is definitively hindered. For this reason, I decided to focus on a longer interval with the purpose of providing biostratigraphic and biochronologic datums from one of the rare carbonate successions available for the Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene in the Equatorial Pacific. We used this refined framework to analyze the mode and tempo of evolution of some calcareous nannofossil taxa (i.e., sphenoliths and Dictycoccites). The fourth chapter of this thesis provides a highly resolved documentation of the MECO as recorded from the ODP Site 1051A (NW Atlantic). Our results evidence changes in calcareous nannoflora assemblages during this transient episode of global warming that are consistent with an increase in nutrient availability. Small reticulofenestrids, typically thriving in eutrophic environments and stressed conditions, show a long-term gradual increase in their relative abundance thus suggesting increased nutrient availability of the sea surface waters at ODP Site 1051A. A similar trend is also recorded by eutrophic large Dictyococcites which sharply increase in abundance at the same stratigraphic level (LCO) providing a further evidence of a shift toward more eutrophic conditions. This scenario is also supported by the slight decline showed by Sphenolithus and Discoaster. These genera are considered as k-specialist warm-oligotrophic taxa and their decrease in abundance during a phase of gradual warming is clearly related to an increase of nutrient availability. Finally, if we go into detail on genus Sphenolithus, a profound reorganization was found to take place: S. furcatolithoides goes extinct, S. predistentus and S. obtusus firstly appear and most of the other species temporary increase/decrease their abundance. Overall, our data from ODP Site 1051A indicate that changes in calcareous nannofossil assemblages started well after the onset of the MECO and before the peak warming following two different modes, a first type has been defined as abrupt (e.g., the LCO of Dictyococcites, the HO of S. furcatolithoides) while the second as gradual (the increase of small Reticulofenestra).<br>Durante il mio progetto di dottorato ho studiato le associazioni a nannofossili calcarei provenienti da tre siti nell’intervallo corrispondente al Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO). Il MECO è un episodio ipertermale transitorio e di breve durata, caratterizzato da un’importante perturbazione a livello globale degli isotopi stabili sia dell’ossigeno che del carbonio, osservato alla transizione tra Chron C18r-C18n (ca. 40 Ma) ha una durata di circa 500-600 kyr (Bohaty et al., 2009). Esso rappresenta un’inversione significativa del clima durante il trend di raffreddamento di lunga durata dell’Eocene medio e superiore. Il MECO è uno tra gli eventi ipertermali, assieme al meglio conosciuto Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum, riconosciuti nel Paleogene (PETM, Kennett and Stott, 1991). Attualmente l’interesse verso questi argomenti è crescente perché essi sono considerati potenziali analoghi nel passato dell’atteso riscaldamento globale che sarà in atto nel prossimo futuro. L’ipotesi più accreditata riguardo le cause del MECO è connessa ad un enorme evento di degassazione di CO2, legato a una importante riorganizzazione delle placche tettoniche avvenuta durante l’Eocene (Bohaty et al., 2009). Le sezioni studiate sono situate in diversi setting deposizionali e aree geografiche. In particolare la prima successione, la sezione di Alano, è localizzata nelle Alpi nord orientali del Veneto e comprende l’Eocene medio e superiore. Dal punto di vista paleogeografico, la sezione ha una paleoprofondità di 600-1000 m ed è parte del bacino di Belluno, entro la Tetide centro occidentale; la seconda sezione di studio è stata recuperata nell’IODP Site 1333 durante l’Exp.320 svoltasi nel Pacifico Equatoriale. La paleoprofondità stimata per questo Site è di 3800 m, mentre la profondità attuale è ca. 4800 m. La terza sezione di studio è stata recuperata dal Leg ODP 171B nell’area del Blake Nose (Atlantico nord occidentale) ed ha paleoprofondità stimata di ca. 1500 m. Il primo obiettivo di questo studio è verificare se c’è un cambiamento unico e globale nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei in risposta al MECO. Un ampio spettro di setting paleodeposizionali e aree diverse (sezione di Alano, Site 1051A and U1333C) è stato analizzato durante questa fase paleoclimatica estrema e sono state fornite ricostruzioni paleoambientali basate su modificazioni osservate nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei. Il secondo obiettivo di questo studio è centrato sulla biostratigrafia e biocronologia dell’intervallo Eocene medio a Oligocene inferiore, con particolare attenzione al MECO. Biorizzonti standard e addizionali sono stati testati e confrontati con dati precedenti presenti in letteratura, fornendo stime del grado di affidabilità dei bioeventi considerati e delle loro calibrazioni. Il primo capitolo della tesi è una breve presentazione generale dell’evoluzione paleoclimatica del Paleogene inferiore, seguita dalla descrizione dei materiali di studio e dei metodi e strategie adottate in questo lavoro. Nel secondo capitolo di questa tesi viene presentato uno studio sui nannofossili calcarei ad alta risoluzione attraverso il MECO. I nostri dati dalla sezione medio batiale di Alano indicano che l’intervallo riguardante il MECO sembra coincidere con cambiamenti significativi nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei. Taxa che preferiscono acque eutrofiche/fredde e forme rimaneggiati mostrano un aumento nelle abbondanze durante l’evento ipertermale. Al contrario, taxa con preferenze per acque oligotrofiche/calde mostrano un trend peculiare anticovariante rispetto ai taxa meso-eutrofici, diminuendo in modo significativo durante gli intervalli del MECO e post-MECO. Questi risultati possono essere interpretati come un arricchimento temporaneo dei nutrienti disciolti nelle acque più calde superficiali, e suggeriscono che la aumentata disponibilità di nutrienti nella colonna d’acqua ricopre un’importanza maggiore rispetto ad altri fattori ambientali nel determinare l costituzione dell’associazione a nannofossili calcarei. Inoltre il maggior rimaneggiamento è coerente con un aumentato input di terrigeno, probabilmente dovuto all’accelerato weathering (alterazione) chimico, scatenato dall’aumentato ciclo idrologico. Nel terzo capitolo di questa tesi, fornisco i risultati dei sedimenti recuperati dall’IODP Site 1333 durante l’Exp.320 nel Pacifico Equatoriale, in un intervallo di tempo compreso tra l’Eocene medio e l’Oligocene inferiore. Questi dati evidenziano un importante cambiamento nello stato di preservazione, con il numero di individui contati entro un’area specifica (1 mm2) che si avvicinano allo zero durante il MECO. Nello stesso intervallo abbiamo osservato modifiche nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei coerenti con un evento di intensa dissoluzione. Oltre alla evidente forte diminuzione di individui/mm2 già citata, un argomento ancora più forte a favore di condizioni di dissoluzione pervasiva è basato sul fatto che, se consideriamo l’abbondanza relativa (%), Discoaster, il genere più resistente, aumenta considerevolmente, come atteso nel caso in cui l’associazione originaria sia alterata da dissoluzione preferenziale. Al Site U1333C, il MECO si può considerare un intervallo semi sterile, quindi nessuna interpretazione paleoambientale è possibile. Per questo motivo ho deciso di focalizzarmi su un intervallo più lungo, con l’obiettivo di ottenere dati biostratigrafici e biocronologici da una delle rare successioni carbonatiche disponibili dall’Eocene medio all’Oligocene inferiore nel Pacifico equatoriale. Abbiamo usato questo modello per analizzare il modo e tempo dell’evoluzione di alcuni taxa di nannofossili calcarei (i.e., sfenoliti e Dictycoccites). Il quarto capitolo della tesi fornisce una serie di dati ad alta risoluzione del MECO, ottenuti dal Site 1051A (Atlantico nordoccidentale). I nostri risultati evidenziano cambiamenti nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei durante questo episodio transitorio di riscaldamento globale coerenti con un aumento nella disponibilità di nutrienti. I reticulofenestridi di piccole dimensioni, che tipicamente prosperano in ambienti eutrofici e in condizioni di stress, mostrano un aumento graduale di lunga durata nelle loro abbondanze relative, suggerendo quindi una aumentata disponibilità di nutrienti nelle acque superficiali dell’ODP Site 1051A. Un andamento simile si registra anche nei Dictyococcites di grandi dimensioni, eutrofici, che aumentano bruscamente in abbondanza allo stesso livello stratigrafico (LCO), fornendo una ulteriore evidenza di uno shift verso condizioni più eutrofiche. Questo scenario è supportato anche dal lieve declino che si evidenza in Sphenolithus e Discoaster. Questi generi sono considerati taxa di acque calde ed oligotrofiche, K-specialisti, e la loro diminuzione in abbondanza durante una fase di graduale riscaldamento è chiaramente correlabile ad un aumento dei nutrienti disponibili. Infine, entrando all’interno del genere Sphenolithus, si è osservata una profonda riorganizzazione, S. furcatolithoides si estingue, S. predistentus e S. obtusus fanno la loro prima comparsa, e molte delle altre specie subiscono aumenti o diminuzioni temporanee delle loro abbondanze. Nel complesso, i dati provenienti dal Site ODP 1051A indicano che i cambiamenti nelle associazioni a nannofossili calcarei sono iniziati molto dopo l’inizio del MECO e prima del picco di riscaldamento, presentando due diversi andamenti: un primo tipo può essere definito brusco (ad es. la LCO di Dictyococcites, la HO di S. furcatolithoides), mentre un secondo tipo è graduale (ad es. l’aumento delle Reticulofenestra di piccole dimensioni).

La province distensive d'Anatolie occidentale est définie par des complexes de grabens dont 20 ont une direction N-S et huit E-W. Une controverse persiste à propos de la datation et du mécanisme à l'origine de ces grabens. Cette étude a pour but de fournir des données biochronologiques dans cinq bassins structuraux, à partir de l'étude des faunes de micromammifères récoltés dans ces sédiments de grabens et de dater ainsi ces derniers et les failles qui sont associées. Quatorze localités ont été échantillonnées. La systématique des groupes de rongeurs est étudiée : Cricetidae (Cricetini et Cricetodontini), Spalacidae, Muridae et Arvicolidae. Cette monographie présente la description de 36 espèces (dont sept nouvelles) appartenant à 15 genres (dont deux nouveaux). Ces localités, ainsi que de nombreuses autres précédemment signalées, ont été corrélées à la zonation européenne MN utilisant les degrés évolutifs des faunes de rongeurs. Deux localités ont livré des petits mammifères du Miocène inférieur : la première est située le long du graben Büyük Menderes et l'autre dans le graben Demirci. Trois localités ont livré des petits mammifères du Miocène moyen : deux situées le long du graben Büyük Menderes et une dans le bassin Kale-Tavas. Cinq localités ont livré des petits mammifères du Miocène supérieur, quatre proviennent du graben Bozdogan et une du bassin Çine. Quatre localités ont livré des rongeurs Plio-Pléistocènes, trois sont situées le long du graben Büyük Menderes et une le long du graben Gediz. Il s'avère possible, à partir des faunes de rongeurs, de proposer une chronologie des dépôts et de discuter ainsi leurs implications stratigraphiques et tectoniques. Les interprétations stratigraphiques précédentes basées sur la lithologie s'avèrent erronées<br>The western Anatolian extensional province is defined by 20 N-S, eight major E-W trending graben complexes. There has been a long-lasting controversy about the timing and causative mechanism of the western Anatolian grabens. The debate concerning the antiquity of the grabens is due to the continental nature of the graben infills in which the stratigraphy is based on lithological rather than palaeontological or radiometric control. This study aims to provide biochronological data using small mammal fossils to date the infills and associated faulting in five selected structural basins in the western Anatolian extensional province. Four-teen micromammal localities have been sampled. The systematics of the rodent groups with relatively good biochronological resolution is studied: Cricetidae (Cricetini and Cricetodontini), Spalacidae, Muridae and Arvicolidae. This monograph describes 36 species (seven new taxa) belonging to 15 genera (two new taxa). These localities, as well as several other previosly known localities have been correlated to the European MN zonation by using the evolutionary degree of rodent faunas. Two localities yielded early Miocene small mammals: one is situated along the Büyük Menderes Graben and the other is in the Demirci Graben. Three localities yielded middle Miocene small mammals: two situated along the Büyük Menderes Graben, and one in the Kale-Tavas Basin. Five localities yielded late Miocene small mammals, four of which are in the Bozdogan Graben and one in the Çine Basin. Four localities yielded Plio-Pleistocene rodents, three of which occur along the Büyük Menderes Graben and one along the Gediz Graben. Based on the rodent evidence, it is possible to propose a chronology for these deposits and to discuss their stratigraphic and tectonic implications. The previously proposed stratigraphies based on lithological control are misleading

Cinq nouvelles localites karstiques d'age pliocene, riches en micromammiferes et particulierement en rongeurs, ont ete decouvertes en languedoc et en roussillon. Les faunes de rongeurs recoltees permettent le reexamen de celles deja connues dans cette region. L'etude des stephanomys a l'echelle de l'espagne et du sud de la france a conduit a l'identification d'une nouvelle lignee de ce genre au cours du pliocene. Le reexamen des petits mimomys de ces deux memes secteurs geographiques permet une nouvelle definition de l'espece m. Stehlini et une reinterpretation d'une partie du schema evolutif propose pour la lignee m. Occitanus-m. Savini. Se fondant sur ces analyses phyletiques, le cadre biochronologique du pliocene du sud de la france a pu etre affine et des correlations avec l'espagne etablies. Une nouvelle methode estimant l'age numerique d'un gisement a partir de l'utilisation des lignees evolutives est proposee. Elle a permis le calcul des taux de transformation morphologique des lignees et d'analyser les evenements fauniques a l'echelle de l'espece et la dynamique de la faune de rongeurs. Les principaux evenements fauniques reperes entre 5 et 2,3 ma coincident avec les deux variations paleoclimatiques importantes enregistrees au pliocene

Une analyse des caractères morphologiques et biométriques des Caprinae actuels (tribus des Ovibovini et des Caprini) et du Plio-Pléistocène d'Europe occidentale débouche sur de nouvelles interprétations et propositions taxonomiques et phylogénétiques. Pour les Ovibovini actuels, qui comprennent dans la plupart des classifications zoologiques les genres Ovibos et Budorcas, l'analyse des caractères permet d'exclure ce dernier de la tribu. Des analogies sont relevées entre les deux genres et Ovis, ce qui suggère une origine commune pour ces trois taxons. Le regroupement de Budorcas et d'Ovis dans la nouvelle tribu des Ovini est proposé. Pour Ammotragus et les Caprini actuels représentés par les genres Hemitragus, Pseudois et Capra, les caractères morphologiques et biométriques montrent que les trois premiers sont apparentés, Ammotragus étant toutefois plus à part. De nombreuses similitudes entre Hemitragus et Capra sont aussi décelables. Chez ce dernier, la quasi-identité de proportions et le peu de différences anatomiques entre C. Nubiana et C. Walie indiquent que le bouquetin d'Abyssinie ne constitue qu'une sous-espèce de celui de Nubie, et qu'il convient donc de la nommer C. Nubiana walie. La monophylie de C. Pyrenaica et C. Ibex, suggérée récemment par des analyses moléculaires, n'est confirmée ni par l'anatomie externe et interne, ni par la parasitologie qui distinguent à un niveau spécifique les deux taxons et montrent une certaine proximité entre C. Pyrenaica et C. Caucasica. La révision et l'étude des Ovibovini, Caprini et Ovini provenant d'environ 200 gisements compris entre la fin du Pliocène et le début de l'Holocène permettent de préciser les modalités de leur mise en place, leur origine et leur évolution. Sept genres (Megalovis, Soergelia, Praeovibos, Ovibos, Ovis, Hemitragus, Capra) et seize espèces sont reconnues (M. Latifrons, S. Minor, S. Brigittae, S. Elisabethae, P. Mediterraneus, P. Cedrensis, C. Ibex, C. Caucasica, C. Pyrenaica). Des néodiagnoses sont proposées et des rectifications de déterminations sont apportées, notamment pour les taxons du Pliocène et du Pléistocène inférieur attribués jusqu'ici à Capra. De nouvelles formes sont définies (P. Priscus delumleyi, C. Caucasica praepyrenaica) ainsi qu'un nouveau genre (Pseudocapra). Pour Capra, en France, le rôle de barrière filtrante joué au Pléistocène par le Rhône et la Durance est clairement montré. La présence de C. Caucasica est aussi confirmée, ainsi que sa nature d'ancêtre de C. Pyrenaica. L'influence de la loi de Bergmann chez Praeovibos et Hemitragus est visible, comme le sont les modifications engendrées par les isolats géographiques chez Capra. Deux phases principales d'immigration des Caprinae sont mises en évidence au début du Pliocène final et au début du Pléistocène moyen, ainsi qu'un appauvrissement progressif de la diversité des taxons. La durée de vie de chaque espèce peut être précisée et une nouvelle répartition chronologique et géographique en découle

L'intérêt de l'approche biométrique en systématique et phylogénie est abordé par le biais d'une analyse morphométrique de l'appareil manducateur des Carnivores actuels. Elle a mis en évidence les contraintes fonctionnelles et phylétiques s'exerçant sur le crâne et la denture et permis de relier le niveau de contraintes s'exerçant sur une morphologie à la variabilité morphométrique. Les différents mécanismes des contraintes (liées au développement ou aux interactions fonctionnelles se mettant en place entre les éléments d'une morphologie) sont discutés, de même que leurs possibles implications en phylogénie. La systématique des grands Carnivores d'Eurasie et d'Afrique est revue dans une perspective paléobiogéographique. L'analyse révèle une très grande stabilité des subdivisions zoogéographiques : les événements de dispersion s'effectuent principalement au sein du domaine paléarctique, l'évolution endémique prédomine en Afrique. L'analyse paléoécologique montre l'absence de lien entre événements de dispersion et modifications de la structure des communautés mammaliennes. Par contre, les modifications de composition des guildes de grands Carnivores s'associent en Europe à des modifications de structure des communautés d'Ongulés et à des modifications climatiques. Ce phénomène semble moins marqué en Afrique<br>Constraints influencing morphological evolution are investigated through a biometrical analysis of the skull and teeth of modern carnivores. This study shows that phyletic constraints influences morphological adaptation to functionnal demands and that constraints can be evidenced by biometrical variability. Mechanisms of developmental and phyletic constraints and their possible implications in phylogenetic reconstructions are discussed. The biometrical approach can also be successfully used in a systematic point of view and is the basis of a comprehensive systematic revision of Plio Pleistocene larger carnivores of Europe with reference to Africa and Asia. Paleobiogeographical implications merges from this study and Plio Pleistocene dispersal events of larger carnivores are then discussed. Dispersal events mainly concerns Europe and Asia with sporadic immigration of african taxa into Europe. These dispersal from Asia are shown to be progressive and more continuous when biochronological resolution is achieved and this analysis emphasizes the stability and the homogeneity of the palearctic domain in Plio Pleistocene times. The evolution of communities is studied in the context of dispersal events. No clear links between evolution of communities and dispersal events of carnivores appears but community structure is influenced by climate changes. These changes are less marked in Africa

La première transgression à Libycoceras et Laffitina du Maastrichtien supérieur correspond à la formation du Farin-Doutchi. La sédimentation marneuse dolomitique et la faune peu diversifiée traduisent un milieu marin peu profond et restreint. Les rivages de la mer maastrichtienne, à sédimentation détritique argilo-sillo-sableuse, sont occupés par des marécages et des lacs ou lagunes. La succession de dépôts marins et littoraux dans la formation du Farin-Doutchi a permis de définir des paraséquences. Celles-ci s'organisent en deux cortèges sédimentaires : un intervalle transgressif et un prisme de haut niveau formant une séquence incomplète. Le cycle eustatique à l'origine de la séquence se décompose en plusieurs paracycles se traduisant par des paraséquences. La deuxième transgression à Libycoceras et Laffiteina du Maastrichtien supérieur (t4) correspond à la formation d'In Waar. Le membre 1 de cette formation, gréso-ferrugineux avec restes végétaux abondants, correspond à une sédimentation continentale, en partie fluviatile. Il a subi une importante rubéfaction et la ferruginisation s'accompagne d'une légère phosphatisation. Le membre 2 est caractérisé par une sédimentation détritique (silts et sables) de plaine cotière, localement deltaique, à marécages ou mangroves. La transgression à Ranikothalia et Lockhartia du Paléocène (t5) correspond à la formation de Garadoua. Le milieu marin est caractérisé par une sédimentation carbonatée à attapulgite de plateforme subrécifale. La zone littorale, à sédimentation argilo-sableuse, est colonisée par une mangrove. Dépôts carbonatés marins et littoraux siliciclastiques alternent à la base de la formation de Caradoua et donnent des paraséquences rétrogradantes correspondant à l'intervalle transgressif. Les paraséquences suivantes, carbonatées aggradantes, caractérisent le prisme de haut niveau. Les transgressions T3, T4 et T5 sont probablement d'origine eustatique. Les séquences liées à ces transgressions sont incomplètes ; elles sont constituées de deux cortèges sédimentaires : l'intervalle transgressif et le prisme de haut niveau.

Au cours de ces dernières années, de nouvelles découvertes dans le Paléogène africain et le Néogène asiatique sont venues combler de nombreuses lacunes dans notre compréhension de l'histoire ancienne des primates. Ces découvertes ont amené de nouvelles problématiques concernant la chronologie et la paléobiogéographie de ce groupe. L'Asie et l'Afrique sont considérées comme des centres importants d'évolution et de diversification des primates au cours du Tertiaire mais les conditions paléoenvironnementales qui ont contraint les différenciations initiales au sein de ce groupe, les événements et les modalités de migration ainsi que la chronologie des échanges fauniques entre ces deux continents restent encore à élucider. L'établissement d'un cadre temporel, essentiel à la compréhension de l'histoire évolutive des faunes, s'est donc avéré nécessaire. Les études paléomagnétiques et biostratigraphiques effectuées sur de nombreuses séquences paléogènes en Afrique du Nord ont permis de corréler et de dater avec précision certains gisements de mammifères et d'apporter des éléments de réponse pour comprendre à quelle occasion les premiers anthropoïdes sont arrivés en Afrique, par quelle voie de dispersion et quelles étaient les modalités des différenciations initiales au sein de ce groupe. Le Miocène d'Asie du Sud a connu l'émergence de primates hominoïdes affiliés aux orangs outangs. En Asie du Sud-Est, ce groupe est représenté par le genre Khoratpithecus, récemment décrit en Thaïlande et au Myanmar dans le Miocène moyen et le Miocène récent. Les études magnétostratigraphiques et biostratigraphiques des sites à Khoratpithecus ont apporté des indications fiables quant à la chronologie des différentes phases de divergences et la diversification initiale des hominoïdes, ainsi que des réponses sur leur histoire paléobiogéographique et les relations entre le climat et l'évolution vers les formes actuelles<br>During the past decade, new fossil discoveries from the African Paleogene and the Asian Neogene have provided new data that help reconstructing the early evolutionary history of several groups of mammals, including primates. The Asian and African continents have been both considered as major centres of evolution and diversification of primate groups during the Tertiary. However, understanding the early evolutionary history of these groups and the modes and routes of dispersal between these two landmasses have been hindered by a lack of consensus on both the timing and biogeography of their origins. New chronological data are absolutely required to provide a precise temporal framework, crucial for a better understanding of the early Tertiary emergence, diversification and paleobiogeographical history of the Asian and African groups of primates. The age estimates, provided by magnetostratigraphic and biochronologhical studies, have precised the age of several localities which document the poorly known Paleogene African mammal evolutionary history and contribute to illuminate the antiquity and the pattern of anthropoid radiation in Africa. This work, based on paleomagnetic and mammalian biochronological data, also presents refined chronostratigraphic analyses of the Khoratpithecus-bearing localities of Thailand and Myanmar. Providing a temporal framework for these deposits allows more precise correlations with other Neogene Asian hominoid localities, and permits a better comprehension of the evolution and paleobiogeographical patterns of Miocene South Asian mammalian faunas

Revision de la stratigraphie du campanien et du maestrichtien en europe. Les resultats magnetostratigraphiques et geochimiques conduisent a mettre en parallele l'ancienne campanien-dordonien et la limite campanien-maestrichtien telle qu'elle est definie au limbourg. On etablit la position d'un pole geomagnetique virtuel pour l'europe stable. On met en evidence le synchronisme des evenements biologiques (apparition-disparition) et isotopiques. De meme les accidents isotopiques sont correlables entre sites pelagiques et sites de plateforme ce qui laisse supposer une origine climatique pour les divers evenements. On montre que les conditions climatiques du maestrichtien sont proches de celles permettant l'installation d'une calotte glaciaire

I Suidae (Mammalia, Artiodactyla), sono un diversificato gruppo di grandi mammiferi, oggi ampiamente distribuito in Africa e in Eurasia, che include anche un diversificato assortimento di forme estinte. La maggior parte delle specie attualmente viventi si riproducono velocemente e sono molto adattabili. Questo probabilmente spiega perché diverse linee evolutive abbiano sperimentato rapidi (nel corso del tempo geologico) momenti di diversificazione, i quali, oltre che per l’importanza nell’evoluzione del gruppo, rivestono grande interesse per correlazioni biocronologiche e ricostruzioni paleoambientali. Queste applicazioni sono specialmente sviluppate per il Neogene e il Quaternario dell’Africa, dove i suidi fossili assumono un ruolo fondamentale nella datazione relativa di diversi siti chiave dell’evoluzione umana. In Europa, questo potenziale è relativamente poco sfruttato, in parte per insite differenze tra le diverse specie, ma soprattutto, e in qualche modo paradossalmente, perché i ritrovamenti effettuati in tempi storici spesso mancano di un contesto affidabile. In effetti, anche se i suidi fossili sono potenzialmente di grande importanza per molte applicazioni, la generale plesiomorfia e plastica adattabilità di questo gruppo rende necessario valutare i cambiamenti evolutivi all'interno di contesti ben vincolati cronologicamente e geograficamente. Nel contribuire al più ampio obiettivo di risolvere le relazioni evolutive e sviluppare uno schema biocronologico per i suidi neogenico-quaternari dell’Europa, una serie di casi di studio è presentata in questa tesi, che sono stati pubblicati o sono in corso di pubblicazione come articoli indipendenti. I risultati di questa tesi confermano e discutono, a diverse scale cronologiche, geografiche e filogenetiche, il valore biocronologico e paleoecologico dei suidi europei. In particolare per: 1) la cosiddetta crisi del Vallesiano ~9.7 Ma; 2) la transizione Miocene-Pliocene (Turoliano-Rusciniano) ~5.3 Ma; 3) il Pleistocene Inferiore superiore, nelle faune pre- e post-Epivillafranchiano ~1.2–0.8 Ma; 4) le oscillazioni climatiche ed ambientali del Pleistocene Medio al Pleistocene superiore. Inoltre, analisi di neuroanatomia del cranio ed ecomorfologia hanno restituito risultati inaspettati, aprendo promettenti linee di ricerca per studi futuri.<br>Suidae (Mammalia, Artiodactyla) are a diverse group of large mammals, today widely distributed in Africa and Eurasia, but also including a heterogeneous array of extinct forms. Most extant suids are fast-breeding and highly adaptable species. This likely explains why several lineages experimented rapid (over the course of geological time) episodes of diversification which, in addition to the importance for the evolution of the group, are of great interest for biochronological correlations and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. These applications are especially developed in the African Neogene-Quaternary, where fossil suids assume a fundamental role in the relative dating of several key sites for human evolution. In Europe, this potential is relatively poorly exploited, partly due to inherent differences between species, but mostly, and somehow paradoxically, because historical recoveries often lack appropriate controls. Indeed, even though suids are of great possible value for many applications, a drawback of the overall plesiomorphic morphology and plastic adaptability of suids is that evolutionary changes need to be tested within well chronologically and geographically constrained settings. In contributing to the general goal of resolving the evolutionary relationships and developing a biochronological scheme for Neogene-Quaternary suids of Europe, a collection of case studies is presented in this thesis, which are or will be soon published as a series of independent papers. The results of this thesis confirm and discuss, at different chronological, geographical, and phylogenetic scales, the biochronolocical and paleoecological value of European suids. In particular for: 1) the so-called Vallesian crisis ~9.7 Ma; 2) the Miocene-Pliocene (Turolian-Ruscinian) transition ~5.3 Ma; 3) the late Early Pleistocene, in pre- and post-Epivillafranchian faunas ~1.2–0.8 Ma; 4) Middle to Late Pleistocene environmental and climatic fluctuations. Moreover, analyses on neurocranial anatomy and ecomorphology yielded unexpected results, opening promising lines for future research.

Norian to Early Callovian faunas in the eastern half of the Iskut River map area can be divided into three suites: a benthonic fauna consisting of bivalves, corals, and gastropods; a planktonic fauna of radiolarians; and a nektonic fauna of coleoids and ammonoids. The ammonoids (27 genera, 47 species) and radiolarians (14 genera, 18 species) are described. Other taxa are identified and listed in Appendix III. Ammonoids, bivalves, and radiolarian of the following stages are recognized: Norian (Cordilleranus Zone and Amoenum-Crickmayi Zones), upper Hettangian - Lower Sinemurian (Canadensis Zone), Upper Pliensbachian (Kunae and Carlottense Zones), Lower Toarcian (Assemblage Zones 2-3 of Jakobs), Upper Toarcian (Assemblage Zone 6 of Jakobs), Aalenian (Erycitoides howelli assemblage zone), Lower Bajocian, Upper Bathonian, and Lower Callovian. In the eastern Iskut River map area: i) the Stuhini Group is Norian, ii) the Jack "formation" and the basal sedimentary sequence of the Unuk River Formation are upper Hettangian to Lower Sinemurian, iii) the upper volcanic sequence of the Unuk River Formation ranges from the Lower Sinemurian to the Pliensbachian, iv) the Betty Creek Formation ranges from the Upper Pliensbachianto Lower Toarcian?, v) the Mt. Dilworth "formation" is restricted to the Upper Pliensbachian to possibly Lower Toarcian (at John Peaks), vi) the Salmon River Formation ranges from middle? Toarcian to Lower Bajocian, vii) the Eskay Creek and Troy Ridge facies of the Salmon River Formation are Aalenian to Lower Bajocian, and viii) the Ashman Formation ranges from Lower Bajocian to Lower Callovian. Regional correlations with strata elsewhere in the Bowser Basin are as follows: i) the Betty Creek and Mt. Dilworth formations are coeval with the Wolf Den Formation (Spatsizi Group) and the Nilkitkwa Formation (Hazelton Group); ii) the Salmon River Formation is coeval with the Melisson, Abou, and Quock formations of the Spatsizi Group and with the Smithers Formation of the Hazelton Group. At the Snippaker Ridge, strata previously described as Toarcian, are now shown to be Norian inage. At the Treaty Ridge section, the Aalenian fauna below a felsic unit provided the first evidence of ayounger felsic horizon in the map area; this unit represents a higher stratigraphic level than the felsicunit that constitutes the type Mt. Dilworth "formation". Age of the stratabound mineralization at Eskay Creek is confined to Aalenian to possibly Early Bajocian. The rocks that host the Treaty Glacier alteration systems are shown to be Aalenian to Early Bajocian in age. Jurassiomineralization was therefore restricted to the Aalenian - Lower Bajocianinterval. Ammonites are locally common in siltstone and shale, benthonic faunas are abundant in coarse sandstone, and the planktonic forms are locally common in siliceous shale and limestone. The benthonic and nektonic faunas were deposited in a wide spectrum of near shore to off-shore shallow shelf to slope/basinal environments represented by the Composite assemblage depth zones B-D ofTaylor (1982). Nassellarian-spumellarian radiolarian ratios suggest that within the Salmon River Formation at Eskay Creek, both the contact zone sediments hosting the stratabound mineralization and the felsic volcanics were deposited in deeper water than the overlying andesite/pillow basalt sequence.

The interaction between climate, environments, and mammalian faunas during the late Pleistocene-Holocene has been studied intently over the last several decades. Cave deposits play an important role in our understanding of these complex interactions, but they are especially significant for our understanding of the faunal history of the Great Basin. In order to develop a deeper time perspective on mammalian faunal change, I began a project that integrated several elements necessary for identifying and interpreting biotic change in the Great Basin of the western United States. These elements included development of a framework for understanding the importance of cave deposits for the paleontological record, collection of a mammalian fauna that pre-dates the terminal Pleistocene, identification of that fauna in the midst of shifting taxonomic paradigms, and evaluation of the fauna in the context of previous regional biogeographic models. I utilized data from the FAUNMAP database to evaluate the significance of the contribution that cave deposits make to the Pleistocene mammal record. Caves do provide unique faunal data in addition to contributing a high percentage of the individual species records for late Pleistocene mammals. Fieldwork was conducted at Cathedral Cave, NV, in order to assess a fauna that was thought to predate the late Pleistocene-Holocene transition. In excess of 30,000 identifiable fossils were recovered in an excavation area that was roughly 1.5 x 2 x 0.7 m. Prior to fieldwork in 2003, age estimates for the fauna were between 750 ka to 850 ka. New chronologic analyses suggest a more recent age (≤146.02±2.584 ka to 151.2±4.4 ka) that extends the known chronologic distributions of several taxa and alters previously established biochronologic frameworks for the Pleistocene. This work also calls into question previous age assignments for portions of Smith Creek Cave. Individual faunal identifications were made using a conservative data-reliant approach in order to minimize geographic assumptions and render an independent data set useful for broad biogeographic analyses. Although the faunal data presented here do not explicitly support or refute regional biogeographic models, they do indicate that patterns of faunal change can be found even when species-level identification are not achieved.

The fossiliferous sediments of the Hueso and Tapiado formations exposed in the Vallecito Creek-Fish Creek section (VCFC) of the Anza-Borrego Desert (ABD) span the boundary between Blancan and Irvingtonian North American Land Mammal 'Ages.' Historically, the determination of the Blancan-Irvingtonian (B-I) boundary in the VCFC proved problematic. A new study to determine the B-I boundary in the VCFC revealed data inaccuracies in both published works and curatorial records of the mammal and other vertebrate fossils from the ABD. Most individual inaccuracies were minor, but an accumulation of over 50 years of multiple inaccuracies had significant effects on local and regional biostratigraphic and biochronologic correlations. A detailed investigation of the inaccurate data resulted in recognition of 17 types of error, with at least five sources. The two most prominent sources of error are those derived from publication and curation protocols. Examination of over 150 publications and in-house faunal lists produced over 830 taxonomic names and format variants, for 110 mammalian taxa identified from the ABD and VCFC. Approximately 50% of the taxonomic identifications were previously published without voucher catalogue numbers or fossil descriptions. A critical review of the taxonomic assignments resulted in an updated faunal list of ABD terrestrial Mammalia, including 110 taxonomic names, 66 unqualified genera, and 46 unqualified species. A supplemental list of 'retired' taxa includes 178 previously published or listed taxonomic names and format variants. The 4.5 km sequence of originally superposed sediments within VCFC is now tilted at 23 degrees and exposed in plan view. This exposure was captured in both aerial photos and satellite imagery. GIS layers of the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale and individual collecting localities are readily superposed onto the stratigraphic images. When united with the faunal database, GIS maps of biostratigraphic data facilitate detection and correction of data errors. Resulting corrected maps show highest and lowest stratigraphic occurrences of taxa, as well as geographic clustering of taxonomic groups, outlining possible paleohabitats. As a result of data improvement and GIS display, the local B-I boundary currently is best estimated by the presence of Ovibovini at >1.42 Ma.<br>text

L'étude des faunes du Quaternaire s'inscrit dans une dynamique de connaissance des paléoenvironnements et est de ce fait nécessaire pour mieux cerner les contraintes environnementales qui ont rythmé la dispersion des hominidés sur l'ensemble des continents. Le genre Canis, autour duquel nous avons axé ce travail de recherche, présente la particularité d'être resté constamment présent en Europe occidentale depuis son apparition, il y a plus de trois millions d'années, jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Cette constance fait de lui, malgré son caractère ubiquiste, un excellent témoin de l'évolution des paléoenvironnements. A travers l'analyse de la variabilité des populations actuelles et l'étude de dix séries fossiles du Sud de la France couvrant le Pléistocène, de nouveaux éléments de discussion sont avancés sur l'évolution des représentants du genre. Nos résultats, couplés à l'analyse critique des données bibliographiques nous ont dès lors permis de proposer une nouvelle phylogénie. Cette dernière permet non seulement de mieux cerner les phases d'apparition et de dispersion des différentes espèces du genre Canis, mais également de démontrer son potentiel biochronologique. Ainsi, trois grandes phases dans l'évolution du genre ont pu être mises en évidence. La transition de ces espèces est corrélée à de grands événements de l'histoire des faunes quaternaires (bioevent) et autorise de ce fait l'utilisation de cette phylogénie à des fins biochronologiques ainsi qu'une discussion autour des relations entre ces espèces et les paléocommunautés animales et humaines.
