Abstract:
The intent of my thesis is to find a way to integrate a large big-box retailer into a community in such a way that it benefits the community as a whole. This must be accomplished within the parameters that mark the store as a viable option for the parent company as well. This ideal must be approached from the philosophy that box stores are a large part of the current American way of life and to let them grow unchecked will signal the inevitable death of downtown retail districts as more and more business gets sucked to the super-stores and the areas immediately surrounding them. To do this we will need to find what benefits a box-store can add to a community and further research and rethink the typically negative aspects of these retail giants to find a way to incorporate them into our downtown shopping districts, without destroying their original feel. With this thesis, it is my intent to create a viable model that allows box stores to act as anchors and catalysts for a downtown area (either existing or built) rather than its death knell. To do this I will be rethinking a number of design strategies with the seamless integration of community and big-box retail in mind. To this end, I will not be acting to simply find a way to add a box-store and its typical trappings to the end of historic downtown street, but rather to find away to integrate a set of large box stores into a downtown community in such a way that benefits the citizens of that community on every designable level. I will be challenging not only the typical design strategies of a box store, but those of a typical downtown community as well. Seven major design strategies will be looked at during this project, they are: 1. Design for a diversity of use and users 2. Design a safe and secure streetscape that will encourage use. 3. Design a streetscape that accommodates pedestrians as equals with vehicle traffic. 4. Design a destination, not just a path. 5. Design it well. 6. Balance supply with demand. 7. Use aesthetics as an integration tool. With these design strategies, a box store can become an integral part of a downtown community ... or at least a much better alternative to the rampant sprawl that occurs with their current implementation strategy.

Schrag, Amber C. "In the shadows of the big houses: excavations at a non-elite residential group at Uxbenká, Belize." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/2059.

Abstract:
Households inform us about social relationships in ways public-centered research might exclude. Studies of non-elite settlements also bring attention to the rich diversity that characterized pre-Columbian society. Surprisingly little is known about Maya commoners despite the recent influx of studies that address the residential areas of sites. Even less work of this type has been done in southern Belize where Uxbenká, the site studied, is located. Uxbenká’s settlement system is characteristic of Maya sites, and includes residences, ancillary structures, burials, modified landscape features surrounding the household, and related gardens and agricultural areas. The 2007 excavations and analysis of this residential group settlement offer a fundamental component to our basic knowledge of the site. The excavations were conducted to assess the temporal occupation and functional use of space at one non-elite residential group (SG 21) at the site. The data collected are compared with other residential excavations and survey conducted at Uxbenká and with other sites in order to better assess the social variation of the site. Work at SG 21 aids in the development of a more comprehensive and contextual view of the occupation of Uxbenká.

Abstract:

Guard, Misty Ann. "Business innovation and regulatory enforcement: case studies of the big box retail industry and enforcement of RCRA." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/33940.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine the following research question: how has enforcement of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) adapted to the Big Box business system innovation? Additionally, the study explored the possible nature of regulatory choke points that may emerge from the enforcement of RCRA in the Big Box retail system. This study used contingency theory to establish a foundation for analysis of the Big Box business system innovation through identification of structural elements, external influences, and their subsequent interactions associated with the Big Box retail system in terms of environmental compliance with the RCRA enforced by the United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This research employed an embedded comparative case study design using the comparison of two Big Box firms, Walmart Stores, Inc. and Target Corporation, nationally and for the following states with opposing enforcement strategies: Arizona, Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas. The data used was obtained from third-party federal or firm-maintained sources. Findings indicate Walmart adheres to the structural models developed using contingency theory principles and incurs more impacts from regulatory agencies due to the enforcement of RCRA. Furthermore, it was observed that inspections of the firms are not distributed throughout the organizational structural elements by all states. Additionally, the use of different enforcement strategies resulted in the emergence of regulatory choke points by Arizona, Kentucky, and Texas; however, Missouri appears to balance enforcement without causing a regulatory choke point. This research has identified that the enforcement of RCRA has not universally adapted to the demands of the Big Box business system innovation. Agency implications, firm implications, directions for further research, and continued development of a regulatory choke point theory are discussed.

Abstract:
Many rural districts are facing economic decline because of a range of factors such as demographic change, changing socio-economic development patterns, farm amalgamations, the entry of large retail businesses, the so called ‘Big Box Retailing’ (BBRs), and a decline in rural infrastructure investment. These factors in turn affect the viability of many small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs), which are the primary employers and the engines for economic growth and employment in rural districts. The combined effect of these processes is that many rural districts struggle to keep young people, maintain economic and social diversity and attract new settlers and investment. This thesis seeks to answer the question as to how large scale retail businesses, rural farm amalgamations and declining rural populations impact on the viability of SME retail businesses in rural areas. In order to answer this question, this study identifies the key factors, which affect the future viability of small-to-medium sized retail businesses in sparsely populated rural districts using the South Taranaki District as a case study. The role of economic development agencies and district councils is also examined using case studies of small towns in rural districts of Australia and the United States of America (USA). This study found a number of factors affect the future viability of small-to-medium sized retail businesses in sparsely populated rural districts. For the South Taranaki district, these factors include the arrival of large-scale supermarkets, followed by large scale retail chains such as The Warehouse. These factors, combined with changing rural population structures and economic ‘spikes’ relating to sporadic energy development, have significant implications for the long term viability of many SMEs in the district. Case studies of similar rural districts in the USA and Australia provided examples of strategies that could be used to manage these impacts. This thesis recommends policies, initiatives and strategies that may be considered by territorial local authorities, regional councils and central governments to help address the economic development challenges facing rural districts.

McDowell, Carina. "Staffing the Big House: Country House Domestic Service in Yorkshire, 1800-1903." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/22697.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines domestic service practises among some members of the Yorkshire gentry during the nineteenth century. Historians usually consider the gentry to have shared the same social outlooks and practises as other members of the upper class in spite of significant differences in income and political power. However, as they were less well-to-do, they could not afford to maintain the variety of servants a wealthy aristocrat could. Three main families were selected to reflect the range of incomes and possession or lack thereof of a hereditary title: the Listers of Shibden Hall, the Sykes of Sledmere House and the Pennymans of Ormesby Hall. The Yorkshire gentry organised country houses servants along the same hierarchical lines as prescriptive authors suggested because this gave servants clear paths for promotion which reduced the frequency of staff turnover; furthermore the architecture of their country houses promoted such organization. Secondly, this architecture reinforced the domestic social positions of every rung of the domestic hierarchy. As part of a unique subgroup of the upper class, gentry ladies were less likely to experience class conflict with servants clearly placed within the domestic service hierarchy. The conclusion is that through selective recruitment processes, the distinctive work environment and a particular labour pool, this group created a unique labour market tailored to their social and economic standing.

Abstract:
Women of the big house families of Ireland have been much neglected both by mainstream Irish history, and the more specialised field of women's history; no more so than in the period that this study concerns itself with, 1860-1920. Thus far, the Irish women who have made it prominently into historical discourse have been the rare examples of the fabulously wealthy and the notorious. The female members who occupied the predominant middle-ground of this social group have been largely forgotten. This is arguably unjust as they played an integral role within their respective families, in big house life, but also within the society in which they lived. This study utilises the theme of marriage to bring transparency to the lives of such a middle-ground of big house women. This theme is important for two reasons. Firstly, marriage was the most important concern faced by these women, and would shape their future lives. To marry was to perform their raison d'etre, to give their lives purpose within a marital partnership. Secondly, marriage is an area in which such women were indubitably of equal importance to their male counterparts - emotionally, socially and financially. Using material from both public and private archives, along with other historical sources, this study seeks to bring to light the preparations for marriage, the social, economic and emotional driving forces behind marriage, and the lives of those who failed to marry - the big house spinster. The heiress is also considered in this period and presented in a more realistic way than lingering preconception has previously allowed. Lastly, this study addresses the importance of the role of married women of the big house in both domestic and public affairs.

Abstract:
During the eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland was dominated economically and politically by a powerful elite whose ownership of land not only provided them with wealth but also gave them access to positions ofpolitical influence on a local, national and even international level. The closing years ofthe nineteenth century witnessed a powerful. challenge to this elite on both an economic and a political front. While these developments resulted in the rapid decline ofthe southern landed class and the loss ofmany oftheir big houses, this thesis argues that the experience ofthe landed class in the north-eastern six counties oflreland was very different in many respects. It examines the serious impact that agricultural depression and land legislation had on landlords throughout Ireland during the I880s and 1890s. It argues, however, that, through a combination ofcareful management ofresources and more favourable land legislation in Northern Ireland after 1921, northern landlords were placed in a much better position to continue maintaining their country houses than were landlords in what was now the Free State. The thesis also investigates the eA1ent to which the northern landed class continued to operate as a political and social elite in the opening decades ofthe twentieth century. It examines the significance oftheir continuing social links with Britain's landed and political elite and the importance ofthis for their continued relevance in twentieth century society. It also examines the move that many ofthem made into leadership roles both in opposition to ~ome Rule and within the new state ofNorthern Ireland and argues that, although increasingly challenged by a powerful middle class, their continued role in society had an important influence in e:ll.1ending the survival ofthe big house in the north-east oflreland.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The PhD thesis titled “Prehistoric House and 3D Reconstruction: Towards A BIM Archaeology”, illustrates the efforts to build and validate a high-dimensional visual model of the pile dwelling from the Early Neolithic site of La Draga (Girona, Spain), explicitly built to explain archaeological remains and to understand the logic of built spaces in a remote past. An innovative methodology based on BIM (Building Information Module) has been used to create the model and expand its explicative capability. The dissertation includes a description of the theoretical background of this research focusing on the genesis of Virtual Archaeology and its ramifications including purposes, problems and advantages of this new approach to Archaeology. The description take also into account Functional Analysis and Reverse Engineering exploring the relationship with Virtual Archaeology. Finally an overview of the “new entry” in Archaeology, the BIM is given. The relationship between Ethnography and Archaeology, the evolution of Ethnoarchaeology and how ethnographical and architectonical similarities, when the archaeological data is scarce or unclear, could be used to deduce or speculate the form and technique of the ancient pile dwelling are also described. A general vision about different kinds of Neolithic houses around the globe is also given, in order to display the great diversity of architectonics at these early times. The research also includes a description of those physic forces that affect a pile dwelling and the different kind of wooden degradation that could affect a pile dwelling. The core of the research is meant to describes the reconstruction methodology from “dissecting” the house, using an innovative ontology based on modern architectural definition of house parts, to the reconstruction of its elements. The relationships between the different elements and parts of the house have been examined in order to show how they work and how they interact with each others. The dissertation includes a description of how each reconstructive steps has been undertaken using all the data at our disposal. The creative process undertaken in order to create a functional BIM process that would fit not only with the site of La Draga but also with all the archaeological sites in general, it is also described. The thesis includes the description of how we have implemented the conceptual model of the prehistoric timber house into a Building Information Model (BIM) for expanding the explanatory model and generalize our initial findings. Finally, the development of the “Three little pigs theory”, is presented. This theory has been designed to demonstrate how buildings having similar shapes, dimension etc. may not only have very different meanings and functions but also different responses to the same physic forces, which is why comparisons based uniquely on “similarities in shapes” should be avoided.

Abstract:

A prefabricated timber frame house previously built by Villafabriken AB has been modeled in Autodesk Revit Architectural, a 3D-program based on BIM-technology. This has been done tosee if it’s possible to produce the publications that Villafabriken demands from the designengineer’s work, and examine which possible extra values that may arise compared to traditional 2D-CAD drawing.BIM is short for Building Information Modeling. Everything is stored in a single database and a change in the project file is automatically updated across the project. BIM provides more than just drawings since information from the model can be retrieved in various ways such as lists and quantity schedules. It was possible to produce the publications that Villafabriken demanded using Revit, but BIM doesn’t only mean a new way of drawing, it also require a change in the company’s process were the information from the model is being used.

Abstract:
Purpose: A fear of change has been in the Swedish construction industry. Errors and delays are seen as obstacles to development in the construction industry. Industrial construction means more automated manufacturing, which places higher demands on the design. The design stage is the bottleneck for industrial construction with 2D technology. BIM with its information management provides increased coordination, resulting in a number of improvements. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the design of small house manufacturers is transformed by a transition to BIM from 2D technology. Method: In order to respond to the goal, the thesis has been based on a case study with the data collection methods observation, experiment and focus group. With observations, students have studied how design with 2D technology looks today for small house manufacturers. The experiment provided an in-depth analysis of how design with BIM can be used. In order to analyze how BIM changes the design, focus group from the company has been used. Findings: The thesis shows that design with 2D technology for small house manufacturers works but that a number of improvements can be made. With BIM, small house manufacturers can streamline their design in time and dependency. BIM improves total design time, but also for each task. BIM helps the information to be handled and used more easily, and that information loss is reduced. Implications: Results show that BIM can streamline the entire design process and is applicable to the small house industry. The workload and time are positively affected by the use of BIM. Each individual planner benefits from BIM in terms of time and addiction. As the design process is not changed but only streamlined, a possible transition becomes easier. Limitations: This thesis is limited to design for small house manufacturers who use prefabrication.

Abstract:
In much of the writing of twentieth century Anglo-Irish author Elizabeth Bowen, houses, and in particular family homes, often reflect the psychological and social status of their inhabitants. They can be understood as the structural embodiments of the vast cultural and economic network taking shape as the forces of urbanization and industrialization changed the landscape. Yet, even as these domestic spaces represent the predominant social relations characterizing the first half of the twentieth century, the family homes also can play a key role in character development and gender identity, defining the lives of those who inhabit them, by perpetuating these same previously established and codified social roles and relationships. The family home in Bowen is often characterized by the furniture and objects that fill and structure its interior space, and the resulting pattern of experience functions to confine and represent the lives and expectations of its residents. As a result, for each of these families, this domestic space and the memories with which it is associated exert a strong and compelling force on the family members’ present psychological and emotional states, as well as their expectations for the future. Although the social conventions of the family home can be suffocating in their definition of these expectations, especially for the women of the house, these conventions also supply a stability and constancy that is perhaps conducive to the very formation of a stable identity. The security promised by the inner order of the home comes to determine the psychological stability of the inhabitants’ subjective reality, though the many upheavals that inundated the first half of the twentieth century succeeded in revealing that spatial security as an illusion. If Bowen’s characters are to succeed in achieving a self-determined identity in the new, precarious reality of the modern century, they must not only reconcile themselves to the legacy of the family home and the past traditions that it embodies, but also determine a new basis for self-realization as a twentieth century subject outside of the prescribed roles defined and perpetuated by a more traditional domestic space. In order to determine the extent to which these modern family homes reflect the dominant social discourses of the period and perpetuate their codes of identity and behavior, it will be necessary to acknowledge and take into consideration the political and cultural environment in which Bowen’s representations of domestic space exist. For example, Bowen’s depiction of the Anglo-Irish Big House Danielstown in The Last September must be understood in light of the declining political and economic power of the Ascendancy that occurred throughout the early twentieth century. In a further effort to examine the significance of homes in Elizabeth Bowen, I will also focus on selected texts from her short fiction. The moments of dispossession that are scattered throughout Bowen’s texts appear to suggest the possibility of the fictions that lie behind the stability of both the family home and the identities of family members attached to that space.

Abstract:
Bats are always found in heritage buildings in Hong Kong, especially the vernacular Chinese-style buildings. This is because the natural environment which suitable for bat roosting is reducing and the structure and low disturbance of the heritage buildings are suitable for bats to roost. As conservation of heritage buildings arouse more and more attention in recent years, there are more and more conservation work projects in heritage buildings too. When planning conservation work in a heritage building with the existence of bats, what are the issues to be concerned? Since bats are protected by the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (Cap.170), it will be an offence if works to be carried out which will hurt bats and destroy their roosts. However, sometimes conservationists seem face a difficult choice in keeping the bats or carry out the conservation work. The work may impose adverse impacts to bats such as destroying their roost and disturbing them. But keeping the btas in the heritage buildings without the conservation work, the building may become dilapidated or even collapse. As there is no comprehensive bat mitigation guideline for conservation work for heritage buildings in Hong Kong. Although there are some guidelines available in Europe and USA, are they applicable in Hong Kong? The aim of this dissertation is to provide a preliminary guide for building professionals/ conservationists to handle the bat issue when planning conservation work to heritage buildings with bat existence. The facts of bats in Hong Kong is studied then followed by the examination of mitigation measures proposed by Natural England with assessments and adjustments to fit the use in Hong Kong. Two local cases are studied and evaluation of the bat mitigation has been carried out. Finally, some points to note when carrying out conservation work in heritage buildings in Hong Kong have been discussed.

Abstract:
Urban development in Hong Kong is often regarded as demolition of aged buildings and re-building a massive volume building on the same lot. Heritage in the past decade has been a hot topic in the public and the media. A lot of heritage with values were not being graded or protected by the Hong Kong Government. In spite of this, some of the heritage were conserved accidently. The dissertation will investigate examples when conservation and development come together, in a form of case studies on current examples of adaptive reuse of Post-war Tong Lau in Hong Kong. When heritage and urban development come together, which seems to be contradicting, in fact, could be converged into a new approach of financially viable form of urban development. The key issue addressed by this dissertation is by observation and review of the current examples of adaptive reuse of Post-war Tong Lau, to analysis the design criteria and guideline for the Adaptive Reuse of Post-war Tong Lau as an alternative choice for the developers for future property development, and at the same time could contribute to the conservation in Hong Kong.

Lee, Kam-sing, and 李金成. "From painted brick to facing brick: to restore or not to restore." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47584130.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, architectural and construction development in Hong Kong relies on load bearing bricks for structural support. In the modern age after World War II, the common application of reinforced concrete structure in high-rise construction has seen a change in the use of brick as an infill material for reinforced concrete frame construction. Because load bearing brick cannot meet the structural requirement of high-rise buildings, it is no longer common used in construction, and brick buildings that have been built are gradually demolished for redevelopment. For surviving brick buildings in Hong Kong, the ones built with red facing bricks are generally Western style buildings mostly located in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. For buildings built of Chinese grey brick, they are usually Chinese vernacular buildings, such as ancestral halls and temples, located in New Territories. However, with the common availability of modern paint for redecoration as well as weather protection, some brick heritage buildings have been plastered with rendering and painted. The reason for this is that a smooth painted surface gives a neater appearance and the impression of being easier to maintain and clean. Of course, there are also some traditional Chinese vernacular brick buildings, particularly Hakka houses (客家屋), which have a tradition of having brick surfaces painted with white wash covered with lime plaster (Tsang Tai Uk at Shatin and Poon Uk at Yuen Long are examples). With heritage conservation becoming more important, there are now more and more restoration work carried out on historical brick buildings. These projects are usually led by the Antiquities and Monuments Office and executed by the Architectural Services Department. One of the restoration problems faced in these projects is the removal of paint so that the original brick surface will be revealed. This dissertation aims to concentrate on the common methods used in Hong Kong to restore painted brick surfaces and to evaluate these paint removal methods through case studies that involves buildings of red engineering facing brick and Chinese grey brick. Through this dissertation, it will be demonstrated that restoring a brick surface is not straight forward technical work, but a process that must have a systematic conservation approach and planning. The dissertation will examine case studies of conservation projects involving paint removal work, and use the lesson learned to establish guidelines for paint removal in a planned and systematic way.

Abstract:
Drying process needs lots of energy and usually prone to high equipment and operational cost. Research tasks have focused on improving the drying performance and reducing the energy consumption rate. Among a number of industries, textile manufacturing needs the process intensively. It is surprising that little research has concerned principle enhancement and drying process design. In the support by Fong’s National Engineering Company Limited, a series of research that targeting to the inadequacy of technology development for machinery and process design have been conducted. The redevelopment of machinery design has based upon a heat setting machine –ECO dryer. The machine was used as a working platform to supply all necessary testing information before and after the enhancement. The ductwork and air distribution system design have been revised to improve the unevenness drying problems appeared in the heat setting of fabrics. Two main research scopes have been performed that included the development of a new duct sizing approach –Uniform Jet Velocity (UJV) and redesigning the air chambers. The proposed UJV approach is a new air duct design model developed from fluid dynamics principles. The air jet speed along each nozzle is maintained at a constant rate to provide a uniform jet impingement effect. A duct size algorithm was proposed to adjust the cross sectional area ratio between the main and branch streams for the target of producing a constant impingement velocity across the entire air duct. In the enhancement of the air distribution system design, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analytical approaches were used to model air flow patterns before and after the redesign of air chambers. The CFD analysis results told that a linear air distribution system with four sub-chamber design could produce the best air distribution pattern on the ECO dryer. The request of an accurate drying cycle time predication is also large in textile industry. It is because the problems of under-and over-drying usually happen in the jet impingement process. The second essential objective in the research is to develop systematical approaches for a good qualifying of a drying cycle. Four analytical models have been studied that included First order kinetics, Diffusion, model based on solutions of diffusion equation and Wet surface. An equation for each of the models was developed to describe the characteristics of a porous type fabric drying process. In the study, the required modeling parameters were empirically determined, and the accuracy among the models has been compared. Findings from the research have proved that the model based on solutions of diffusion equation can be the best strategy in presenting a drying cycle under different machine settings. The investigation has not ceased after the completion of the hot air jet impingement research. The study objectives have moved onto an alternative drying technology using steam as the drying medium. Due to many problems reported in the drying of yarn packages using electro-magnetic waves, moist heat drying technology is urgently needed. At the final part of the research, two CFD simulation models namely constant viscous resistance and increasing viscous resistance were studied. A preliminary result generated from ANSYS CFD analysis results was obtained that has opened up a new study area for further elaboration of a new drying technology, and hopefully can be practically applied to textile industry in the near future.

This thesis undertook a whole building lifecycle assessment of a university hospital building in Trondheim, Norway designed to passive house standards. The delivered energy for electricity and heating was estimated to be 122 kWh/m2. Impacts outside the energy used during the operational phase of the building were significant including 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, 41% of terrestrial acidification and 43% of particulate matter formation. Normalized to the number of staff, the building emits roughly 0.75 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year over the 50 year life of the building.

Abstract:
In Qing Dynasty, Chang’s family was one of the most famous merchants of the Shanxi ancient business. Chang’s Manor, which has a history of more than 200 years, stays as the most awarded civil building assembly among all the Shanxi compounds by its elaborate sculptures, wooden decorated archways, brick sculpted walls and many other art forms. Since 2001, Chang’s Manor has been commercialized for tourism purpose. Many “interesting stories” have been made up while lots of facts which are the real “people’s history” were left out and may be lost forever. This is also a common problem within many heritages which have been transformed into tourist attractions in China. And this arouses my research interests. In this dissertation, I would like to seek and tell the “true stories” from 1949 to 2001 in accordance with my conversation with the original habitants who have had real life experience of the original places. Surely, I will identify the real social value of Chang’s Manor through the interpretation of the true stories from local people.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since the 1841 arrival of British troops in Hong Kong have people decided staying in the city with rugged contours been finding solutions to face the geographical reality of the scarcity of land, whether are they European merchants or Chinese settlers. Public spaces that serve as a buffer and an extension to the private domain are of fundamental importance to the well-being of the people and the city. However in recent decades there is a prevailing trend to worship Western concept of public spaces such as squares and piazzas that were tailor-made to suit the habitual behavior of Europeans who and whose ancestors possess a strong culture of public living. The Western public spaces do not suit the mode of living of Chinese who are not used to exhibit themselves publicly and would prefer to stay close to their dwellings. The key issue addressed by this dissertation is that public spaces suiting the needs of Hong Kong people should learn from traditional urban public spaces for Chinese settlers who share if not identical, similar cultural background to us. Hong Kong Terraces that were formed by the British government to practically address the difficult circumstances of geographical, political and social factors are a valid example that has helped to solve the overcrowding problem and contributed to the history of the city. In other words, these are Hong Kong’s heritage public spaces that shall be treasured and learnt from. Given this, it is urgent to begin researching such spaces before they are erased from our sight. The dissertation will acknowledge Hong Kong Terraces as successful public spaces in Hong Kong, investigate the causes of formation, and identify their qualities with the illustration of several surviving cases. The research will provide alternative solutions and notes to the design of valid public spaces that shall help to improve Hong Kong urban life.
