Abstract:
The water frogs of western Tuscany (Italy) belong to the L-E hybridogenetic system, and comprise one parental species and its hybrid. A stringent morphological approach for discriminating the Italian hybrids from non-hybrids has yet to be established. In this work, using the molecular marker RrS1, we have determined the hybrid versus non-hybrid status of 43 water frogs collected from two sampling sites (“Fiume Morto Vecchio” and “Padule di Bientina”). At “Fiume Morto Vecchio” we determined 25 non-hybrids and nine hybrids and in “Padule di Bientina” we determined eight hybrids and one non-hybrid individual. All individuals of these two frog populations were analyzed morphologically. We used the derived residuals from regression analysis of all normally distributed morphological parameters on callus internus length (snout to vent length, tibia length, head width, distance nostril eye, first toe length and body mass) to build sex independent variables in discriminant analysis providing a valid contribution to morphologically distinguish hybrids from non-hybrid green frogs in Italy.

Abstract:
Il caso della palude di Bientina, una vasta zona umida bonificata mediante canalizzazioni alla vigilia dell'unitŕ d'Italia, viene indagato cercando di coglierne la complessitŕ e le contraddizioni. La presenza di un confine politico fra Lucca e Firenze compromise fino a metŕ ‘800, in virtů di interessi divergenti, ogni tentativo di condividere soluzioni e progetti di bonifica. Il saggio cerca di spiegare come le acque stagnanti di Bientina - "le acque morte" - fossero ancora nel XVIII secolo un ecosistema umido estremamente composito e, e come tale appariva nella cartografia e nelle fonti storiche. In realtŕ potremmo parlare, ribaltando in positivo lo stereotipo "palustre", di acque estremamente "vive", intorno alle quali ruotavano, da secoli, complesse forme di organizzazione economica e sociale. A partire dalle riforme del '700 iniziň a prevalere un modello di sviluppo incentrato sull'agricoltura e sulla progressiva riduzione e ‘domesticazione' di questo paesaggio di acque. Non si trattň, tuttavia, di un processo inevitabile ma di una graduale e assai contrastata affermazione di un modo diverso di intendere e di utilizzare lo spazio ambientale.

L'argomento del saggio č il sistema di trasporto delle merci per vie d'acqua interne, fiumi canali e laghi, che faceva capo all'Arno, nel Granducato di Toscana e nel piccolo Stato di Lucca, fra il 1737 e il 1859 cioč nell'epoca dei granduchi Asburgo Lorena. Sono presi in esame l'organizzazione politico-amministrativa, e aspetti geografici e tecnici: l'Arno come confine e/o elemento di unitŕ, le infrastrutture della navigazione, le imbarcazioni; ed anche le politiche condotte dai Lorena, in base ai valori diffusi dall'illuminismo L'importanza del trasporto per via d'acqua cala, anche durante il regno del principe riformatore Pietro Leopoldo. Mancano riforme organiche, gli interventi sono pochi, piů per conservare che per riformare. In realtŕ la preminenza č data alle strade, conformemente alle teorie degli illuministi e agli esempi stranieri. Il cambiamento dei valori, l'eliminazione dei privilegi, dei vincoli e dell'assistenza ai poveri con i prezzi "politici" delle "grasce" porta trasformare il lago di Bientina, e vari decenni dopo quello di Fucecchio, in aree coltivate, a favore del ceto fondiario toscano.

Abstract:
The Afrikaans poetry collections grond/Santekraam (2011) by Ronelda S. Kamfer and bientang (2020) by Jolyn Phillips both centralise the ocean and both deal with attempts at recovering repressed black histories. Apart from figuring as a source of spiritual fulfilment and connected to figures in the collection’s livelihoods, the ocean is represented in these collections as the bringer of European colonisers and of slaves to South Africa. In this article I contend that references to slavery and colonialism and the use of words in languages brought to South Africa through slave networks position these collections as products of the transnational Black Atlantic tradition, as theorised by Paul Gilroy. The fact that the narratives of both collections take place in the Overstrand region, near the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, gives an indication of how Gilroy’s theory needs to be adapted to be applicable to Afrikaans literature: as many English-language South African theorists have argued, oceanic literary studies in South Africa should pay as much attention to routes in the Indian Ocean as to Atlantic routes. The emphasis in both collections on not only a history of slavery, but also one of the displacement of and violence against the people already inhabiting the area when colonisers alighted, further serves to indicate what an Afrikaans black aquatic literature looks like. When taking into account these differences between Afrikaans and other versions of black aquatic art, reading grond/Santekraam and bientang as part of a global black aesthetics allows the researcher to identify the ways in which these collections are characterised by a hermeneutics of suspicion (an interpretation of contemporary life that recognises the ways in which it is structured and functions in anti-black ways) and a hermeneutics of memory (an interpretation of this anti-black contemporary as a continuation of the history of the dehumanisation of black people).
