Abstract:
Cost benefit analysis is the conventional method of evaluating automobile transportation improvements. This study examined traditional automobile evaluation methods and applied the same techniques to bicycle transportation projects. Cost data from recent research is summarized and eleven costs (five internal and six external) were estimated. The cost estimates are used to calculate automobile and bicycle costs per mile of travel. A case study of a hypothetical corridor is used to demonstrate how the transportation costs can be applied to specific planning problems. The case study explores what effect shifts in modal distribution would have on the cost effectiveness of automobile and bicycle alternatives. The findings of the study begin to question the underlying premises of traditional cost benefit analysis in transportation projects. The study suggests that conventional analysis is fundamentally flawed and biased toward automobile transportation.

Abstract:
As bicycle transportation has increased, especially among commuters, so have the types of bicycle infrastructure facilities increased. This report focuses on the application of several of these innovative bicycle infrastructure treatments in three different scenarios: shared-lane facilities, bicycle-specific facilities, and high-conflict area treatments. The focus treatments include the sharrow, Sharrow Bicycle Priority Lane, Green Bicycle Priority Lane, Bicycles May Use Full Lane sign, green bike lane, bike-box, green lane in a conflict area, and elephant's footprint markings. The goal of this report is to gather how well bicyclists understand their meaning, how they would use each, and which treatments are most preferred among bicyclists. Data for this study was gathered in the form of an online survey administered to 1000 bicyclists of varying levels and purposes from different regions of the country. The survey gathers general rider characteristics, asks how each bicyclist would use each treatment in different traffic speed and volume scenarios, and finally each respondent rates each of the treatments in order of preference. Using the survey results, the effectiveness of each treatment is analyzed in detail by different population segments of those surveyed. Bicyclist riding characteristics and route choice factors are also examined in detail to better understand the sampled population of riders. The results are discussed and conclusions to the effectiveness of each treatment are made.

Abstract:
A large variety of natural products contain, embedded in their architectural framework, one or more bicyclic subunits. Among them, hydrindanes and decalins occupy a cardinal position. As novel approaches towards these substructures, we have developed original sequences based upon two key steps: a Morita-Baylis-Hillman condensation, followed by a reductive cyclisation or an intramolecular Stetter reaction. Having delineated suitable conditions, a rapid and connective synthesis of substituted hydrindanones and decalones can thus be accomplished. The strength of our methodologies was also exemplified by the formation of various bicyclic enediones and their application in the synthesis of coronafacic acid, a phytotoxin.

Abstract:
This study focused on using a mapping tool, Space Syntax, to analyze the connectivity of the Cache County road network and its use to plan for bicycles. Space Syntax is being compared to another method that is already used by city planners called Bicycle Level of Service, or BLOS. The two analyses used data from Cache County and, after they were modeled and evaluated, a statistical analysis was done to see how similar one is to the other. The analyses were done at both a regional and a local scale. At both scales the analyses were not similar. Data was added to the Space Syntax analysis at both scales to see if it would influence making it more similar to BLOS. Adding the data had no effect in making them similar. It was determined that Space Syntax and BLOS are not similar and more research would need to be done to attempt to make them similar. They both have advantages and disadvantages to them when being used for planning for bicycles. One is not necessarily better than the other, as they are two different methods that could be used.

Abstract:
Less than 1% of work and school trips are completed by bicycle in the United States. Comprehensive bicycle facilities improve bicycle ridership by including a diverse set of strategies that accommodate the bicycle mode and seek to minimize the Level of Traffic Stress experienced by riders. Traffic Signal Operational Strategies for Bicycles (TSOSB) are an integral component of comprehensive bicycle facilities. This research presents a methodology to identify critical zones for implementation of TSOSB. After identifying critical zones a process for assessment of gaps in bicycle safety and comfort and convenience for signalized intersections within the critical zones is conducted. The outcome of the methodology is a prioritized list of signalized intersection that could benefit from the application of Traffic Signal Operational Strategies for Bicycles

Abstract:
An attempt was made to construct an ABS system that would both lock the wheel and release the brakes. The system would be mounted on a bicycle with v-brakes. It would then be tested if it could decrease the braking distance and if the system would respond fast enough. A literature study was made to learn what was needed for such a project. After many attempts of using re-purposed components an ABS system would eventually be built with a new stepper motor, and it was strong enough to lock the back wheels. Unfortunately the system could not be as thoroughly tested as expected, where only the reaction time of the system could be tested and not the braking distance due to a motor driver failure prior to the tests taking place. Due to shipping times and our budget and time constraints, further testing could not be done.

Abstract:
More and more people commute to work, travel and use the electric bicycle as a daily means of transport. The need for bicycle racks, adapted for electric bicycles is growing and the demands on bicycle racks are higher than for bicycle racks for ordinary bicycles. This as they are very expensive to buy. On behalf of NOLA Industries, a bicycle rack for electric bicycles will be designed. The bicycle rack must also meet the need to recharge the batteries while the bicycle is parked and meet all found requirements from all stakeholders, which were collected during the project. The project is carried out by one student from Luleå University of Technology, who is studying M.Sc. in industrial design with a focus on product development. The project was carried out in Luleå with NOLA at a distance in Stockholm. The aim of the project was to come up with an idea for a bicycle rack that is suitable for public environments and that also fits into NOLA’s existing product range. At the beginning of the project, the time was planned using a Gantt scheme. The process used was CDIO consisting of four different phases. After the planning was completed, a benchmarking was made of how the situation looked and how the electric bicycles in today’s society work. The theory section was planned and introduced with a description of the line of technical design. The chapter was then followed up with relevant theory for the project. In order to find out what users think of existing bicycle racks and what were the desires for future bicycle racks, a survey was sent out. The work continued with several different information collection methods which were then followed up with creative work in the design phase. The final work included CAD models and renderings from keyshot of the finished concept. The final concept meets stakeholder requirements for an electric bike rack. It fulfill the need to be able to recharge the electric bike’s battery and to lock the electric bike in several points. The roof and the bicycle racks are equipped with led lighting, counteracting vandalism and theft of the electric bicycles. The roof also protects the electric bicycles against weather conditions.

Abstract:
Autonomous driving is one of the car industry’s major challenges. The next generation of cars will not be driven by humans, but by the cars themselves. With the increase in the number of self driving cars, the pedestrians and bikers need to be walk and bike carefully. Bikers need to be careful even now, when we have human driven cars. While driving, sometimes a bike can be in the blind spot of the car and hence go unnoticed. In this thesis, a small scale prototype was developed to help the bike riders when cycling on a street with cars and buses, know when there is a possibility of collision and avoid it. It uses the concept of Time of Flight (TOF) of an ultrasonic wave, to determine how far the moving vehicle is from the sensor. It can also be used to calculate the speed of a moving object. The ultrasonic waves are also used to differentiate between different types of vehicles. Research was done to choose the appropriate sensing module and the communication protocol. The system was tested and some conclusions were made.

Abstract:
One of the most important aspects of high performance cycling is the best fit between rider and bike. Developing a proper bike fit requires conducting many biomechanical assessments due to the need to match a myriad of bike geometries and human anthropometric variables. One of the primary bike-rider system measurement parameters for power and pedal efficiencies is the cleat placement and alignment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of moving the cleats towards the heel on peak power outputs and pedal efficiencies using a Computrainer (CT) and 2D video analysis. Ten competitive male cyclists participated in the study consisting of tests for peak power (PP) outputs and pedaling efficiencies among two positions of cleats; toe (TP) and heel (HP). No significant differences in peak power outputs were reported between TP and HP (p = .827). Significant differences (p = .027) did exist, however between each condition within the SpinScan (SS) pedal efficiency test. Results from the 2-D video analysis indicate that there exists a difference in ankling patterns between the TP and HP during the first 50 percent of the power phase and the last 50 percent of the recovery phase of the pedal stroke (p = .000 and .001 respectively Based on the results of this study, further research into the longitudinal effects of training in this area are warranted.

Bike sharing is a service, spread over the world and often finds recognition by being made available to almostanyone, providing affordable access in urban space and becoming an alternative to motorized transportationand vehicles. But does bike sharing now answer our needs and desiresin our every day practice in town? Are there possibilitiesto enhance the sharing experience? How to adress the ones that do not make use of the service yet?By keeping close sight to users throughout my project and involving them into my process, it helped me understandhow they want to make use of the bicycles and the service to meet their expectations. These understandings and keyfindings I translated towardsbike sharing and its conclusion defines my proposal.Resulted is a link to StorStockholms Lokaltrafik and bike sharing, a “muscle driven individual public tranportalternative” to the already established public networksystem in Stockholm‘s urban space.Driven by values such as accessibility, flexibility and reliability, I envisoned in a fictional collaboration with SL, the SL Cykel. The SL Cykel covers a Product Service System, embededin the tbana areas and accessed by SL‘s smart card.Based on different modes of traveling, this proposal is meant to be a self-regulating system, which encouragesits customer to become active part in the service and its flexibility.

Abstract:
Electric bicycles have grown rapidly in popularity in recent years, but with little examination of their health effects. We explore their main health effects for different categories of riders in different contexts. Relative risks of mortality were calculated for people transitioning to electric bicycles from cars and bicycles, for 7.5km weekday commutes. Three health impact mechanisms were considered: collisions, air pollution, and physical exercise. Results were evaluated for women and men of different ages and riding style in urban Netherlands. The calculations were then applied to four other countries with significant contextual differences. Changes in exercise level dominated health outcomes in most cases. Even minimal pedaling exertion during commuting brought substantial health benefits. Collision risks were important for young riders relative to the low mortality hazards they otherwise face. Air pollution impacts were small except in the worst air quality case. The combined health effects indicated that scooter-style electric bicycles (SSEBs) were harmful in all cases, especially for young males. Bicycle-style e-bikes (BSEBs) were beneficial when displacing cars but harmful when displacing conventional bicycles. These findings lead to three public policy implications. Policy should: a) encourage e-bike types that require some pedaling, b) limit maximum speed and power of e-bikes, and c) only support modal switches to e-bikes from less active forms of transportation.

Abstract:

Within the discourse on environmentalism and transportation, artists and activists have engaged the bicycle as more than a means of transportation. For an American culture infatuated with the automobile, bicycling has taken on new meaning. Far beyond simply moving people from one place to another in an economical and ecologically friendly way, bicycling can now be understood as a set of symbolic acts intended to subvert and critique automobile culture. For example, artist and author David Byrne advocates for a burgeoning culture of bicycle riders as part of a transportation revolution. Commute Clot, (also known as Critical Mass), a monthly public cycling event in over 300 cities worldwide, situates hundreds of bicyclists, riding en masse usually at rush hour, as activists on busy urban streets, promoting an active, physical and frequently dangerous confrontation between the motorist and cyclist.

Even without the in-your-face confrontation staged by Critical Mass, the material and social conditions of urban cycling can be anything but pleasurable. This project engages media and technology to explore and articulate the roadway as a landscape of frictions between the unprotected flesh of the cyclist and the unyielding metal of the automobile. The topic emerges as especially timely and urgent because the symbolic value of the bicycle as a healthy and environmentally positive option to automobiles frames this opposition anew as a conflict between carbon powered and human powered movement.

The daily confrontation between the motorist and the cyclist, however, involves a real level of danger. To articulate the non-motorist's relationship to the roadway, I consider the bicycle within potential hostile contexts such as roadways without bicycle lanes, locations with extreme weather, and shared roadway space where the non-motorist's bicycle awareness and bicycle knowledge are less evident.

As an artist, I am drawing on the data of the lived bodily experiences of the bicyclist in order to reveal the complexity of social-spatial relations embodied in the non-motorized roadway. Through doing so I am specifically interested to challenge urban design and transportation policies that create hegemonically fraught roadway spaces. Such institutionalized design processes, like those found in urban planning, whether top-down or participatory, tend to be abstracted, where the embodied experience of the roadway users are not considered in the planning discourse. Because the body is missing from the planning dialogue, a public perception evolves where the roadway is assumed to be a space for motorized vehicles. This perception is marginalizing if not life threatening for cyclists and other pedestrians. Casting others' and myself as the quantified interface with the roadway systems using audio recording, photography and interviews, I track the mental and physical experiences of others' and myself while on the roadway. My projects Rest Stop Bike Repair Shop, and Bike Date become platforms for promoting a phenomenological approach to critical roadway design. From a ground up, grass roots-based activist art practice, it is my hope that these planning and design processes can become more informed and influenced by the lived experience of non-motorized roadway inhabitants.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 28-29).
This work develops a method for capturing some of the kinetic energy ordinarily lost during braking on bicycles to power LED safety flashers. The system is designed to eliminate: (a) battery changing in popular LED flashers, and (b) the "generator drag" associated with battery-less human-powered bicycle lights and flashers. System sizing, mechanical design considerations, potential end-user factors, and a model for braking frequencies in urban settings are discussed. With the urban commuter cyclist in mind as a potential user of the regenerative braking system, custom direct-pull brake calipers (or "V-Brakes") were designed and manufactured to include both conventional friction pads in addition to a DC motor to be used as a generator for kinetic energy capture. The energy captured by the DC motor during braking is passed through a full wave bridge to a bank of Nickel-Cadmium batteries at an efficiency of 79%. The output of the full wave bridge and the batteries are connected in parallel with a step-down switching voltage regulator, which insulates the LED safety flasher from voltage spikes due to braking at high cycling speeds. The performance of the final prototype was evaluated at cycling speeds ranging from 8 to 19 mph and braking frequencies ranging from 2 to 8 operations/stops per mile of travel.
(cont.) From the mean power flow (charging) into the batteries per unit distance of travel and the power required by LED safety flashers, the effectiveness of the system at each speed and stopping frequency is examined. For cyclists traveling at average speeds of 10 mph or higher, the LED safety flashers can be powered continuously for stopping frequencies of 8 times per mile and semi-continuously (> 50% of the time) for stopping frequencies of at least 4 times per mile. As such, the system is determined to be potentially useful to urban commuter cyclists, who frequently perform braking operations at regularly spaced intersections and traffic signals, and who regularly travel by bicycle in low-light conditions (dawn or dusk), though usually less than 50% of the time.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a case study conducted on line 4 - Yellow of the São Paulo subway. The objective is to analyse factors influencing the use of bicycles as the access mode to subway stations. 500 interviews were conducted on metro platforms, as well as public bicycle racks and shared bicycle stations in the proximity of line 4 stations. The questionnaire includes questions about the intercepted trip and other travel habits, user socioeconomic characteristics, and assessment of user concordance with 12 statements representing factors that influence positively or negatively the use of bicycles. A descriptive analysis allowed a preliminary assessment of differences between those accessing stations by bicycle and by other modes. Simple correspondence analysis indicated statistically significant differences regarding travel behavior and habits between bike users and users of other modes for station access. Finally, a principal component analysis was conducted with answers to the 12 statements. Three principal components were extracted: a first component including aspects favouring bicycle use (time and money savings, the presence of cycling infrastructure, etc.); a second component representing environmental factors (climate and topography); and a third component representing aspects of personal security and traffic safety. An index of affinity with bicycling was proposed, based on the value of the three components for each individual in the sample, allowing the identification of three groups: Cyclists, Potential Cyclists and Non-cyclists. A comparative analysis of the groups revealed the characteristics that distinguish them, representing important factors in the decision to use bicycles. The understanding of these factors and their influence on users is an important tool to guide policy formulation aiming to increase the use of bicycle for modal integration with the subway.

Abstract:
Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone Project
The city of Tucson is well known for its cycling culture and year-round moderate climate. It is a ‘Gold’ level cycling community according to the League of American Bicyclists. Less known about Tucson is that it can be a dangerous place to ride a bicycle. In an attempt to improve overall cyclist safety, the idea of implementing protected bike infrastructure is explored. With a focus on using protected bike lanes to create a low-stress network for bike movement, this project creates a rubric, and calibrates it against case-studies in New York City, Chicago, and Washington D.C., to analyze the potential streets in Tucson possess to host protected bike lanes.

Abstract:
The thesis seeks to analyse the electric bicycle (e-bike) transition phenomenon in China by applying the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) Transition Theory and Multi-scalar Perspective MLP. The research is performed with abductive case studies drawn from mixed methods. Firstly, we synthesised secondary data to investigate the e-bike transition at the national level (China) and the city level (“mini” case studies of Beijing and Fuzhou) to explore the research questions of 1) Can socio-technical transition occur without deliberate policy support (RQ1)? 2) How can we explain the rapid emergence and enduring popularity of e-bikes in China (RQ2)? Then we performed exploratory research in Cardiff, UK and Nanjing, China using semi-structured interviews. The interview results are used to help design survey questionnaire in Nanjing case study. It is the key research step and addresses the following research questions: 1) How are e-bikes embedded in the current transport regime (RQ3)? 2) How much longer can e-bikes continue to be embedded in the transport regime (RQ4)? 3) What are the mechanisms underlying the rapid emergence of e-bikes (RQ5)? To analyse the data collected from the survey, Generalised Linear Models and Binomial Generalised Linear Models are adopted to investigate current mode choice behaviour and predict future choice. In the theoretical aspect, the thesis applied the Multi-scalar Perspective MLP, filling the gap that traditional MLP does not take into account geographical, socio-political heterogeneity. In addition, we paid attention to the individual role in travel mode behaviour. From a practical perspective, the thesis uses substantial empirical data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the e-bike transition. We invited various groups in the survey, including e-bike users, bicycle users, car drivers, pedestrians and traffic police. The thesis explores a wide range of influencing factors, such as user anxiety, feelings related to e-bike adoption, e-bike user charging behaviour, other travel mode users and traffic police attitude towards e-bike development which have not been studied in previous e-bike literatures. The main findings are: 1) The fast emergence of e-bikes in China is spontaneous, without direct policy support from governments; 2) E-bike transition in China begins with transformation pathway (P1), followed by de-alignment and re-alignment pathway (P2); 3) E-bike users in China are mainly young career-aged commuters and have a much higher education level than average, which are different from other countries; 4) E-bikes are well embedded in the current transport regime and they are adopted widely in many aspects of people’s daily lives, including commuting, going shopping, and collecting children; 5) The underlying reasons for the selection of e-bikes are they provide affordable personal mobility due to the advantages of effort saving, flexible trip times, time saving in traffic jams, and high accessibility, whereas environmental and health factors are negligible; 6) E-bikes are possibly an intermediate mode on Nanjing’s motorisation pathway.

Abstract:
Novel pyrrolidine, indolizidine and azepine ring systems have been prepared via the palladium catalysed [3+2] cycloaddition of cyclic imines with vinylcyclopropanes. The reaction of simple cyclic imines with various functionalised vinylcyclopropanes, provided a range of bicyclic systems, as potential scaffolds for further elaboration. The application of functionalised cyclic imines derived from enecarbamates was limited due to difficulties generating the imine bond. The developed methodology was also employed in the formation of pyrrolooxazinone products, as templates for functionalised proline syntheses. A synthetic sequence based on palladium-catalysed transformations was developed towards the Stemona alkaloid (±)-stemoamide. Palladium [3+2] cycloaddition of a suitable acyclic imine, and tert-butyl ester substituted vinylcyclopropane, followed by an intramolecular Heck cyclisation yielded the azepine core present in the natural product. Lactonisation procedures were investigated to install the final ring of the tricyclic core, however due to time restraints, this work remains incomplete.

The "modular bicycles" is a new conception. By means of assembling or aking apaert of the modules, this research let the bicycles that are useing for recreational purpose can be riden by both single and couple. This article first devide the modular bicycles into three sub-systems for discussion: frame system, transmission system and brake system, then formulate every part''s problems and design objective, consideration, constract. After this is done, we begin the stage of conception design. In this stage, two method are used at the same time to generating new concepts: one is extracting the current device, theother is Brain storming method. All the new concepts that are generated by the both methods are evaluated and modified in order to find the viable concepts. After the stage of concept design is finished, the prototype will be made to verify the concepts that we have choosed and modify them if necessary.

Abstract The study was an action research to develop an environmental education program with junked-bikes on campus to reflect environmental issues in the material economy world. We took the initiation in fixing junked-bikes as environmental action and recruited the volunteers. We carried out the activities to improve the reuse of junked-bikes and hence developed the practicing mode of environmental education program. First we took the knowledge of the environmental issue behind the stuff with the activities of DIO(Do It Ourselves).Secondly, we fostered the emotion to the stuff on everyday life so we won’t abandon stuff easily. Finally, we encouraged people practicing fixing skill so we could fight the over-consumption. We firmly believe DIO is the action competence of the environmental education with the familiar junked-stuff. Besides, it is suggested that we should build up the volunteers group with more knowledge and activities about bicycles, not only the environmental issue. Abstract:
This thesis studies the dynamics and stability of some bicycles. The dynamics of idealized bicycles is of interest due to complexities associated with the behaviour of this seemingly simple machine. It is also useful as it can be a starting point for analysis of more complicated systems, such as motorcycles with suspensions, frame flexibility and thick tyres. Finally, accurate and reliable analyses of bicycles can provide benchmarks for checking the correctness of general multibody dynamics codes. The first part of the thesis deals with the derivation of fully nonlinear differential equations of motion for a bicycle. Lagrange’s equations are derived along with the constraint equations in an algorithmic way using computer algebra. Then equivalent equations are obtained numerically using a Newton-Euler formulation. The Newton-Euler formulation is less straightforward than the Lagrangian one and it requires the solution of a bigger system of linear equations in the unknowns. However, it is computationally faster because it has been implemented numerically, unlike Lagrange’s equations which involve long analytical expressions that need to be transferred to a numerical computing environment before being integrated. The two sets of equations are validated against each other using consistent initial conditions. The match obtained is, expectedly, very accurate. The second part of the thesis discusses the linearization of the full nonlinear equations of motion. Lagrange’s equations have been used. The equations are linearized and the corresponding eigenvalue problem studied. The eigenvalues are plotted as functions of the forward speed ν of the bicycle. Several eigenmodes, like weave, capsize, and a stable mode called caster, have been identified along with the speed intervals where they are dominant. The results obtained, for certain parameter values, are in complete numerical agreement with those obtained by other independent researchers, and further validate the equations of motion. The bicycle with these parameters is called the benchmark bicycle. The third part of the thesis makes a detailed and comprehensive study of hands-free circular motions of the benchmark bicycle. Various one-parameter families of circular motions have been identified. Three distinct families exist: (1)A handlebar-forward family, starting from capsize bifurcation off straight-line motion, and ending in an unstable static equilibrium with the frame perfectly upright, and the front wheel almost perpendicular. (2) A handlebar-reversed family, starting again from capsize bifurcation, but ending with the front wheel again steered straight, the bicycle spinning infinitely fast in small circles while lying flat in the ground plane. (3) Lastly, a family joining a similar flat spinning motion (with handlebar forward), to a handlebar-reversed limit, circling in dynamic balance at infinite speed, with the frame near upright and the front wheel almost perpendicular; the transition between handlebar forward and reversed is through moderate-speed circular pivoting with the rear wheel not rotating, and the bicycle virtually upright. In the fourth part of this thesis, some of the parameters (both geometrical and inertial) for the benchmark bicycle have been changed and the resulting different bicycles and their circular motions studied showing other families of circular motions. Finally, some of the circular motions have been examined, numerically and analytically, for stability.

Bicycle is a space free and multi-functional traffic tool that can use for transportation, daily habit, and exercising. Moreover, if the battery is installed on bicycle, this can ease rider's energy. The purpose of this research is to design a practical bicycle with a versatile and inexpensive controller that can be commercially produced. We developed an intelligent electric bicycle that base fuzzy logic control on the Programmable System-on-Chips approach. The key point is to use fuzzy logic control to control the speed of the bicycle that efficiency the use of the limited battery's power. The uses of fuzzy logic control design have three models, electric bicycle model, smart model and fixed speed mode. Sensor include use hall sensor. The LCD displayer on the bicycle panel can provide the battery voltage, speed and mode of the bicycle. To gain more power of the motor, we used direct current motor. Via many experiments, we have carefully adjusted the parameters, such as memberships and rule; the final result matches our expectation.

The electric bicycle recent several years development is rapid, has provided one kind for the people facilely, the energy conservation, the environmental protection transportation vehicle. Electric cars resonance response is the reflection drives the personnel comfortable degree the target. In order to study the dynamic performance of electric bicycle frames, the nature frequencies and mode shape are analyzed by using ANSYS Workbench software. The frequency of the bicycle frame by using Experimental modal analysis, confirms the Theory modality analysis and the Experimental modality analyzes whether tallies, proves the bicycle frame finite element model the accuracy. Then joins the motor the exciting force to carry on the harmony response analysis, calculated the response of the bicycle frame in a certain frequency, obtains the response value and the frequency curve. Then, under the motor operation of the vehicle testing of measured spectrum, to determine the two analysis methods are consistent, using the finite element method for solving the natural frequency of the bicycle frame, to know whether under the motor rotation frequency close to resonance can be the first body of the dressing to avoid its resonance. The use of such methods hope that it can reduce development costs, reduce proofing time role.

The content of this thesis is divided into three chapters. The chapter-I, illustrate overview on asymmetric synthesis and organocatalysis. It includes, terminology, introduction to asymmetric synthesis, some historical aspects of organocatalysts, classification and utilization of covalent catalysis including iminium and enamine, non-covalent catalysis including phase-transfer catalysts, hydrogen bonding catalysts and importance of alkaloids in asymmetric synthesis as organocatalysts. And successful applications on important C-C bond forming asymmetric Michael domino/cascade/tandem reactions are presented. The interesting art of hydrogen bonding, namely, the formation of double hydrogen bonds between organic molecules is also described. II.1. Organocatalytic formal [5+1] annulation: diastereoselective cascade synthesis of functionalized six-membered spirocyclic indane-1,3-diones/oxindoles via Michael-aldol reaction Chapter-II is divided into 3 sections. Section-1, represents the diastereoselective synthesis of functionalized six membered spirocyclic compounds via Michael-aldol cascade reaction. The reaction proceeds smoothly between indane 1,3-diones/oxindoles/coumaranone as the dinucleophilic components and (E)-5-nitro-6-aryl-hex-5-en-2-one as the dielectrophile in presence of DABCO to give the desired spirocyclic products with reasonable to high chemical yields (30- 84%) and high levels of diastereoselectivities (up to >95:5 dr). II.2. Organocatalytic synthesis of spirocyclohexane indan-1, 3-diones via a chiral squaramide-catalyzed Michael/aldol cascade reaction of γ-nitro ketones and 2- arylideneindane-1, 3-diones. This section describes a chiral squaramide catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of spirocyclohexane indan-1, 3-diones via Michael-aldol cascade reaction of 2-arylideneindan-1, 3-diones and γ- nitroketones. The reaction produces three stereogenic centers having spirocyclohexaneindan-1, 3- diones derivatives with excellent diastereo and high enantioselectivity in good to excellent yields. II.3. Organocatalytic one-pot asymmetric synthesis of functionalized spiropyrazolones via a Michaelaldol sequential reaction. In this section an efficient organocatalytic stereoselective method for the synthesis of functionalized spiropyrazolone derivatives with four contiguous stereogenic centers has been developed through a chiral squaramide catalyzed Michael-aldol sequential reaction. The reaction between 3-methyl-1-aryl-2-pyrazolin-5-ones and (E)-5-nitro-6-aryl-hex-5-en-2-ones is catalyzed by a quinine derived squaramide to give the desired spiropyrazolone derivatives in moderate-to-good yields (up to 80%) with good-to-excellent stereoselectivities (up to >20: 1 dr, 94% ee). III. Organocatalytic diastereoselective [3+2] annulation of 1, 4-dithiane-2, 5-diol and nitro allylic amines via sulfa-Michael-aldol cascade reaction. The chapter III, discloses base catalyzed cascade sulfa-Michael-aldol reaction for the synthesis of novel class of biheterocyclic tetrahydrothiophene derivatives in good yield with high diastereoselectivity. The mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and broad range of nitro allylic compounds are salient features of this protocol. Due to the easy preparation of the starting materials, we believe this methodology provides a simplified route for the synthesis of biheterocyclic thiophene derivatives.

Abstract:
The rumble strips have proven to provide a good protection against the run-off-the-road type of accidents. However, installing them on the local and community roads has raised many concerns among the cyclists. The cyclists occasionally cross over the rumble strip patterns in order to avoid obstacles or debris on the road shoulders or pass a slower moving rider. The majority of the reported concerns are those regarding the ride comfort and controllability of a bicycle traversing the rumble strip patterns. The ride discomfort and controllability of a bicycle traveling on the rumble strips are experimentally investigated by considering a comprehensive test matrix involving: (1) the conventional and suspended bicycles; (2) different rumble strip patterns and traversing speeds; (3) oblique angle of approach to rumble strip; (4) multiple trials and (5) seven test subjects. The objective assessment of the ride comfort on the rumble strip patterns is carried out by measuring the acceleration responses of the bicycle frame at the handle bar and the seat post while the controllability of the bicycle is assessed in terms of the measured yaw oscillations of the handle bar. The cyclist's sensation of the rumble strip patterns is further investigated through subjective measurements where the riders rated each test based on different criteria involving the ride comfort and controllability

This research will deal with the analysis and design of an anti-theft bicycle. At the first, the structure of the bicycle lock device will be focused. Therefore, all related academic journals, dissertations, and patent were collected, ordered, classified, and analyzed in order to understand the phase of the developing tendency towards the bicycle lock apparatus presently. Nowadays, a wave of riding bicycles all over the world is quite prevailing. Also, the bicycles incline to be high-price sporting and recreational equipment. Due to this, the rate of stolen bicycles has increased as well. Even though there are many different types of bicycle locks sold on the market, they are unable to work out effectively to prevent from being stolen because they are easy to be broken. In this case, the target design in this research will be mainly put on the simple structure and facile use enabling users feeling secure to park their bicycles. Based on the process of creative mechanism design, the main functional requirement is firstly defined. Then, the basic structure of the anti-theft bicycle frame is designed, according to the essential size of the bicycle. At last, all the needful design requirement are integrated. To understand the distributive state of stress analysis, SolidWorks is used to draw the 3D model of the anti-theft bicycle and ANSYS is executed to proceed stress analysis.

OTZ intends to completely reformulate the concept of the bicycle, aiming to make this vehicle a unique leisure object. The great part of the use of the bicycle in our society is evident in the daily use of this vehicle as a means of transport, however OTZ tries to differentiate its product from the conventional concept of bicycle. This product distinguishes itself mainly by the standards of quality and exclusivity that it presents, giving it a character highly differentiating of all the other bicycles. OTZ is a bicycle entirely produced by hand, that uses in its construction only products whose quality standards they present are very high. The brand, given the characteristics that this bicycle presents, has as main objective to make this product entirely geared for specific routes. This project has an extraordinarily innovative character since it focuses on totally different product. The main objective of the business plan is reflected in the economic and financial evaluation of the project, taking into account its product and its potential barriers to its feasibility taking into account its nature.

The purpose of design is to solve problems and allow for better quality of life. In today’s customer-oriented generation, designers must complete designs that meet customer demand within a shorter time. Various design approaches will be applied according to different procedures in the design process, and the follow-up design timeliness will be impacted if the selection and application of various design approaches cannot be accurately applied. Consequently, the purpose of the study is to develop a set of design approach which can commence a large amount of innovative concepts within a short period of time. The study first appreciates that product function is the nature of product attributes through literature exploration, and appreciates the application of the existing functional design approach to establish the basic concept of the paper through the study base of product function. Subsequently, the study applies the product-functional-complex-bicycle as the exploration product of the study to seek out bicycle related studies, understand the basic bicycle forming classification, and redefine that the basic construction of a bicycle consisted of five systems. The study collects conceptual bicycle design through the renowned online design magazine- YankoDesign, and classifies the collected conceptual design cases into standard design type, folding design type, innovative function design type and accessory design type. Since accessory design is only the creative design of additional functions, not a full body design, it is excluded in the following analysis. We process function analysis on the 3 major bicycle conceptual design cases- 36 standard design types, 27 folding design types, and 37 innovative function design types, and apply the basic five major systems of bicycle defined by the previous chapter as the structure to develop the functional attribute symbol system of bicycles. The system classification is established through a basic component system, accessory system, joint system and link system to complete the establishment of a functional system symbol, finally, the functional symbol system is applied as the tool to establish the design process and the practical application case. As for the establishment of the design process, we apply an innovative function design type case as the process application sample. First, the design requirement of the design case is described, and when determined according to the requirements, the required functional symbol can be satisfied. The selection will be applied to the spatial permutation and combination change of the structure variation method in the next phase. After the permutation and combination change, find the matching functional symbol map which corresponds with the design to complete the design process establishment.

In this research, the architecture of piezoelectric energy harvester is composed of a piezoelectric cantilever beam and magnets. Vibration of cantilever beam is due to repulsive forces from magnets. First, we use finite element analysis software (COMSOL) to construct model of the piezoelectric cantilever beam. Then, by calculating the resonance frequency of the cantilever beam, specifications of the piezoelectric energy harvester used in a bicycle can be determined. By experiments, we find out the magnetic repulsive force that magnet applies on the cantilever beam is approximate to a periodic triangular wave. We apply periodic triangular wave form excitation to the piezoelectric cantilever beam by shaker to simulate the vibration response of cantilever beam when cycling. In the meantime, software simulation is also carried out to analyze the responses. From the results, when forcing frequency is equal to one fold, half, one third and one fourth of cantilever beam 1st resonance frequency, cantilever beam will vibrate at resonance to have maximum amplitude. When the riding speed is 17.3 km/hr, 8.4 km/hr, 5.6 km/hr and 4.2 km/hr, this energy harvester can have larger power generation efficiency. The maximum power generated by the energy harvester can be up to 135μW.
