Abstract:
During the bicycle “craze” of the 1890s and early 1900s, men and women across Western Europe and North America embraced this novel form of recreation and modern mode of transportation. Undoubtedly, the invention of the “safety” bicycle in 1885 aided women’s enjoyment of the machine, yet in many respects cycling remained an androcentric mode of recreation. This is most evident when examining the paternal structure of bicycle clubs. In the existing literature on cycling, however, little attention is paid to gender dynamics within clubs, especially in the context of smaller towns and rural areas. Using the towns of Tillsonburg and Ingersoll in southwestern Ontario’s Oxford County as a case study, this article examines how cycling clubs in these communities were sites of both change and resistance to the prevailing gender norms of the time. Once membership was opened to women, club activities became more heterosocial and less focused on cultivating virulent masculinity, but women were never fully accepted as full-fledged members.

Abstract:
Aim: Presentation of the potential of the student scientific club for road safety in Poland. Discuss the extent to which the student scientific club in its research activities supports and implements the concepts of identifying road safety risks and submits proposals for improving its condition and related processes. Project and methods: In the research on the visibility of vulnerable traffic participants, a theoretical method – NUR threat analysis – was used to define the research problem.A research problem was formulated in the form of a question: to what extent and under what conditions does NUR visibility affect their safety? Visibility tests were conducted in real conditions after dusk. The following recording devices were used to study the movement parameters of modern means of transportation (bicycles and electric scooters): a Gopro camera, a Sony IV RX10 camera (which realizes 4D recording), a drone with a vision camera, and a Brake Tester retarder. Results: The study of the visibility of vulnerable traffic participants from the perspective of the driver presents parameters for the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists in conditions after dusk. Participants (students) in the visibility study were made aware of the issue of visibility, and therefore the safety of the traffic participant in the situation of illuminated vehicle (bicycle) and without lighting, as well as a pedestrian on the road without a reflective element. They formulated the conclusion that seeing does not mean being seen. The result of the single-track motion tests was that the Brake Tester Model LWS -2/MC retarder, after the performance test, does not provide a measurement of the single-track motion parameters. This is an important practical finding from the research, as vehicle inspection stations are equipped with this device. The acceleration and deceleration values of the bicycle and electric scooter were determined Conclusions: The research activities of the students of the scientific club in question not only make them aware of the risk factors of becoming a victim of an accident as a vulnerable traffic participant, but also allow them to deepen their knowledge, broaden their cognitive perspectives and supplement their skills through practical activities, for example, in the area of NUR visibility determinants or the characteristics of powered vehicles. The transfer of the results of the conducted research is carried out through the participation of students in seminars and scientific conferences, as well as in journalistic activities. Keywords: scientific club, vulnerable road user, education

Abstract:
THE NEW WOMAN was both a discursive formation and a figure produced by materialist history as a result of debates over marriage, sexualities, political rights, labor conditions, life styles, and fashion. Unnamed until 1893 (Tusan 169), the “New Woman” became a lively topic in the press only in 1894 (Schaffer, “‘Nothing’” 39–40), at which point the rhetoric aimed at actual women quickly transformed into attacks on or defense of a literary phenomenon – in part, Ann Ardis suggests, because a literary controversy was less threatening than the prospect of actual social change (12). The “‘props’” attributed to the New Woman by Punch, the preeminent periodical to construct the literary stereotype, included five defining activities: “She smoked, rode a bicycle, frequented women's clubs, read voraciously and wore bloomers” (Miles 247). Scholars have long acknowledged that the New Woman did not suddenly appear but had a pre-history dating back to the 1880s (e.g., Ledger 23). A crucial part of that pre-history in life and in print was the founding of the “Literary Ladies,” a women writers' dining club, in 1889. The club not only represented significant innovation in fin-de-siècle authorship but also, more crucially, precipitated in the press the “props” (bloomers excepted) that would typify – and target – the New Woman from 1894 onward.

Abstract:
Public bicycle and car sharing schemes have proliferated in recent years and are increasingly part of the urban transport landscape. Shared transport options have the potential to support social inclusion by improving accessibility: these initiatives could remove some of the barriers to car ownership or bicycle usage such as upfront costs, maintenance and storage. However, the existing evidence base indicates that, in reality, users are most likely to be white, male and middle class. This paper argues that there is a need to consider the social inclusivity of sharing schemes and to develop appropriate evaluation frameworks accordingly. We therefore open by considering ways in which shared transport schemes might be inclusive or not, using a framework developed from accessibility planning. In the second part of the paper, we use the case study of Glasgow in Scotland to undertake a spatial equity analysis of such schemes. We examine how well they serve different population groups across the city, using the locations of bicycle stations and car club parking spaces in Glasgow, comparing and contrasting bike and car. An apparent failure to deliver benefits across the demographic spectrum raises important questions about the socially inclusive nature of public investment in similar schemes.

Abstract:
In football, including handicapped football, effective play requires players to be able to handle the ball at high speed and perform multiple "explosive" high-speed movements. In disabled football, the problem of developing and evaluating the speed-strength abilities of football players with cerebral palsy is relevant. At present, in the period of active digitalization of education and sports, it is necessary to master and implement digital technologies in sports practice. The study was conducted on the basis of the Zenit football club for the disabled in the city of Izhevsk on an experimental group of 10 football players with cerebral palsy aged 15-18. The article substantiates the necessity and proves the possibility of using the test "bicycle ergometry on MONARK 894E" to measure the speed-strength abilities of football players with cerebral palsy. The basic requirements for tests are considered. Standardization is ensured by testing in the laboratory on the same bicycle ergometer. To check the validity, control motor speed-strength tests were chosen: “Long jump from a place with a push with two legs” and “Run for 30 meters”. Correlation analysis showed a strong statistical relationship between control motor tests and experimental one - "testing on a bicycle ergometer" (multiple correlation coefficient R XYZ =0,87 ). As an indicator of reliability, we took the Bravais-Pearson Correlation coefficient for two measurements on the MONARK 894E bicycle ergometer, which showed a strong relationship between them (r xg=0,99) . On the basis of the GTO standards, a “five-point” interval rating scale was developed according to the indications “maximum alactate power in W” for the experimental test. The conclusions on the conducted research are formulated.

Abstract:
Vitreloy, a metallic–glass alloy of zirconium and beryllium from Amorphous Technologies International (ATI) in Laguna Niquel, CA, is extensively being used in golf clubs. Liquidmetal golf-club heads are fabricated from an amorphous metal alloy that has excellent rebound and vibration-absorbing properties. Research indicates that the prized physical properties of metallic glasses arise in large part from their lack of grain boundaries, which can serve as points of weakness. Liquidmetal putters have a ‘soft’ feel when striking the ball, which the makers claim provides players with improved touch on putting greens. The elevated strength-to-weight ratios exhibited by Liquidmetal alloys make the metallic glasses promising for a range of high-performance applications. Sports enthusiasts may also soon find bulk metallic glasses like Vitreloy in other high-end sporting goods such as tennis rackets, baseball bats, bicycle frames, hunting bows, and even edged tools such as axes. ATl management stated that high-performance sporting goods are only a first step in the market; the new family of materials could also be promising for other, more serious applications.

Abstract:
In the 1880s, two cycling clubs formed in New Orleans—the New Orleans Bicycle Club in 1881 and the Louisiana Cycling Club in 1887. These clubs were institutions of Victorian middle class culture that, like other athletic clubs, arose from the conditions of urban modernity and Victorian class anxieties. The NOBC, like other American cycling clubs, conformed to Victorian values of order and respectability. The attitudes and activities of the LCC, whose membership was younger, reflected instead a counter-Victorian ethos. This paper examines these two clubs in the context of late Victorian culture in New Orleans as it responded both to the conditions of urban modernity common to American cities in this period and to the particular cultural situation of New Orleans at the end of the nineteenth century, including proximity to and amalgamation with the recently-dominant, non-Anglo culture of the Creoles.

Abstract:
The chapter analyzes the image of the New Woman and its feminist meanings by looking at the outfits that became most identified with her: the shirtwaist and the bicycle skirt. Focusing on the image of the Gibson Girl, the most popular archetype of the New Woman at the turn of the century, it explores how college students, White immigrant garment workers, and middle-class African American women appropriated her fashions to further claims for freedom and equality. The chapter also explores the ways middle-class White women used the popularity of the bicycle to negotiate new political presence in the public sphere, looking specifically at the efforts of the Rainy Day Club to popularize shorter bicycle skirts for everyday wear, associating ideas of feminine beauty with ideas of freedom.

Abstract:
Abstract Winifred and Frederick Soddy arrived in Aberdeen in the summer of 1914 full of hopes for the future. It seemed that Soddy had finally, at the age of thirty-eight, achieved professional recognition. He was professor of a department in a Scottish university and, at least before the First World War, this gave him considerable powers within the institution and respect outside. In addition, it looked as if Aberdeen would suit them very well domestically. For the Soddys, with their love of walking and climbing, its position was very much in its favour since the hills and mountains were easily accessible and there they could escape the city. They arrived prepared to maximise these opportunities. In addition to climbing boots, they took from Glasgow bicycles, golf clubs and a drawing board in anticipation of the enjoyment of their new surroundings. The climate was also an improvement on Glasgow. Soddy had disliked the warm dampness typical of the west of Scotland, although he had suffered less there than he had in London smogs. He much preferred the dryer, colder weather of the eastern and more northern part of the country which was, he found, far more conducive to work.

The pentacyclic alkaloid (+)-lyconadin A 3, isolated from the club moss Lycopodium complanatum, showed modest in vitro cytotoxicity. A key step in the first reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 4148) total synthesis of 3, by Amos B. Smith III of the University of Pennsylvania, was the cyclization of 1 to 2. The pentacyclic skeleton of 3 was constructed around a central organizing piperidine ring 9. This was prepared from the known (and commercial) enantiomerically-pure lactone 4. The akylated stereogenic center of 9 was assembled by diastereoselective hydroxy methylation of the acyl oxazolidinone 5 with s-trioxane, followed by protection. Reduction of the imide to the alcohol led to the mesylate 7, which on reduction of the azide spontaneously cyclized to give, after protection, the piperidine 8. Selective desilylation of the primary alcohol then enabled the preparation of 9. The plan was to assemble the first carbocyclic ring of 3 by intramolecular aldol condensation of the keto aldehyde 15. The enantiomerically-pure secondary methyl substituent of 15 derived from the commercial monoester 10. Activation as the acid fluoride followed by selective reduction led to the volatile lactone 11. Opening of the lactone with H3CONHCH3HCl gave, after protection, the Weinreb amide 12. Alkylation of the derived hydrazone 13, selectively on the methyl group, led, after deprotection, to 15. The intramolecular aldol condensation of 15 did deliver the unstable cyclohexenone 1. Under the acidic conditions of the aldol condensation, the enol derived from the piperidone added in a Michael sense, from the axial direction on the newly-formed ring, to give the trans-fused bicyclic diketone 2.

Abstract:
We gaze with some apprehension at a sleek, shiny machine that looks like a cross between a sports car and a small spaceship. Illuminated in a vertical cylinder of light, the time capsule silently awaits our entry; it gives no clue to what we can expect at our destination, the year 2032. With racing hearts, our small group of garbologists enters; we strap ourselves in. Soon the countdown begins. There is only the briefest feeling of levitation, a slight rising sensation in the pit of the stomach as though descending in a fast elevator, and then we are there. As we exit, our curiosity is at fever pitch. What has happened to the Earth in the three decades we miraculously skipped over? Before we departed, the world’s population was rapidly approaching 6 billion, with many signs that the environment was finally wilting under this onslaught. We could only guess at what three more decades of continued environmental degradation might yield. Would we find air that was breathable, only traces of an ozone layer, any remnants of tropical or old-growth forests, any parks or green spaces in cities? Would North America be one giant parking lot? With these questions buzzing through our brains, we begin our futuristic exploration, like archeologists working in reverse. We move invisibly through this new time domain, knowing that we can only observe and not affect anything we see. It is clear that we are still in New York City, but what a change! The streets are no longer choked with car traffic, although small motorized bicycles, some built for two or three people, are darting everywhere. There is no haze in the sky, the air feels clean and brisk, and the streets are completely free of litter. Recycle containers are ubiquitous; they are green and divided into six compartments. As we soon discover, every house, apartment building, streetcorner, park, airport, shopping mall, and baseball diamond has recycling containers; there are no waste bins. People treat garbage as a resource rather than as something undesirable, and they spend considerable effort in separating the various recyclable components, whether they are at home, at work, in a cafeteria, or at play.

Abstract:
Abstract A hydrostatic bicycle, an application of light-duty hydraulic-hybrid transmissions, is a human-powered vehicle that uses pressurized fluid to transmit power to the wheels. Unlike conventional bicycles, this vehicle offers four operating modes: boost, cruising, charging, and regenerative braking. To fulfill these features, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and electronic components are required, leading to a complex design task considering the power availability and physical constraints. The Fluid Power Club at Purdue University developed a virtual twin of the vehicle in a mixed-reality (MR) environment for validating the design before moving to the manufacturing and construction phases. This technology allows the coexistence of virtual objects in physical environments using computers and wearable devices. This work discusses the development of a virtual representation of the proposed hydrostatic bicycle in a MR environment after specifying its desired performance and constraints. The virtual assembly of components was deployed on a headset used by industry mentors and academic advisors to provide valuable feedback concerning the layout and manufacturing considerations. This process assisted the team in making the best decisions during the conceptual design phase, saving valuable resources by helping them visualize and collaborate effectively. MR enables visualizing fluid-powered systems and their components in 3-D, thus becoming an immersive educational and training technology.

The evaluation of the absolute (VO2peak) and relative (VO2peak/kg) values of the peak oxygen consumption is an essen-tial component of exercise testing in athletes. However, according to many researchers, VO2peak/kg values in adolescent athletes do not provide sufficiently reliable information to assess their functional work capacity. The present research aims to investigate the applicability of relative values of oxygen consumption for accurate estimation of functional work capacity in adolescent athletes. The research subjects were twelve basketball players from a junior club team participating in the state championship of Bulgaria. They carried out two maximum bicycle exercise tests with a twelve-month period between the two tests. We analyzed the registered absolute and relative peak power output (Wattpeak, Wattpeak/kg) and peak oxygen consumption. It was established that there was a significant increase in average Wattpeak (8.5%), Wattpeak/kg (6.2%), and VO2peak (3.7%) during the second test as compared to the first one. At the same time, in all subjects, no signif-icant increase in VO2peak/kg (average of 0.9%) was registered. This result is associated with the athletes’ increased body weight (average of 2.7%) during the second test. Based on the lack of VO2peak/kg dynamics compared to the significant increase of Wattpeak, Wattpeak/kg, VO2peak, it can be concluded that the isolated use of VO2peak/kg for functional capacity analysis may result in significant errors in estimating the functional work capacity of adolescent athletes.
