Abstract:
Notes for an edition of Glossario Bergamasco Medioevale by Antonio Tiraboschi This paper describes the structure and the content of Antonio Tiraboschi's Glossario Bergamasco Medioevale, currently preserved at the Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo, consisting of four manuscripts and unpublished notebooks containing more than 2000 alphabetically organized headwords. The sources, both published and unpublished, from which Tiraboschi drew the fragments cited as part of each lemma are described and a classification of the annotations into three subgroups is proposed: notes of a dialectological nature, concerning either Latin or proto-Roman forms in Italian as well as in the Gallo-Italic dialects (Bergamasque, in primis) or relating to particular semantic nuances observable in the lexicon of Bergamasque; linguistic notes on the appearance of Romance constructions replacing Latin constructions and questionable Romance semantic innovations in the fragments cited as examples of each lemma; onomastic observations, concerning toponyms, microtoponyms and - more rarely - personal names. This analysis is preliminary step towards creating a digital edition (available in Open access mode from the home page of the Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai) of the precious linguistic materials which compose the Glossary and a corresponding paper edition, which will favor the valorization and fruition of the work carried out by the Bergamasque scholar.

Abstract:

Gill, Rebecca M. "Conception and Construction: Galeazzo Alessi and the Use of Drawings in Sixteenth-Century Architectural Practice." Architectural History 59 (2016): 181–219. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/arh.2016.6.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines drawings associated with the sixteenth-century Italian architect, Galeazzo Alessi, focusing primarily on two important collections: the 112 folios held in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan for the Milanese church of S. Maria presso S. Celso and the so-called Libro dei Misteri in Varallo's Biblioteca Civica, which contains 318 drawings for the pilgrimage site of the Sacro Monte there. By comparing Alessi's handwriting and drawing style across a variety of different letters and drawings present in archives in Genoa, Milan and Varallo, it is argued that all the drawings held in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana folder and in the Libro dei Misteri must be the work of Alessi himself. The article then moves on to a discussion of Alessi's use of drawings in his practice and the developing role of the architect in the sixteenth century , which, it is argued, was increasingly defined by the ability of the architect to invent and to draw rather than to build.

Abstract:
Abstract Analysis of the path of Public Library of Maranhão since its creation in 1829, in Carmo Convent, to 1889. It was formed initially with the support of the elite and the ordinary people, since its genesis until the advent of Republic, the Public Library has been put under different situations, sometimes of complete abandon and others of peak. In this matter, it is rescued the work of librarians and directors that have created the initiatives for the ´socialization´ of the book and reading in Maranhão in the 80´s. From this historical research it is possible to comprehend the role that it has taken in the background of maranhense intelectuality and in the constitution of the educational field, it has been the privileged space of convergent ideas and knowledge of teachers, journalists and politicians that encouraged the foundation of the Oficina dos Novos (Workshop of Novice), Sociedade Civica das Datas Nacionais (Civic Society of National Dates), Academia Maranhense de Letras ( Maranhense Academy of Letters), newspapers, magazines and other actions which helped São Luis to be named as Brazilian Athens. For the rescue of this path, it was made researches on sources as such: newspapers, reports and speeches of Presidents of the Province, legislation, iconography among other documents that made possible to find its ways and non-ways, in the constitution of its heritage and its physical structure. It is concluded that this research by looking back to the past reveals the contradictions in the formation of public libraries and it also opens a debate to the necessity of investigations that bring out the history and memory of these institutions in Brazil.

Abstract:
A Newly Discovered Autograph by Tomasz Treter: A Notebook with a Design of a Book of Emblems The goal of the paper is to present the attribution and codicological analysis of a manu- script currently stored at Biblioteca civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo (sign. MM 378). The paper describes the manuscript codicologically, also hypothesizing as to its presence in the Bergamo library. Based on a manuscript annotation on the codex’s upper pastedown, I argue that it was intended as a gift for one of the Załuski family. On the basis of the printed correspondence between Józef Andrzej Załuski and Angelo Maria Querini, it may be assumed that Codex MM 378 was among the parcels containing manuscripts from the circle of Stanisław Hosius that the Italian librarian intended to send to Załuski. The boxes with the codices never reached the Polish librarian due to the tardiness of the messenger, Jacques David Frédéric Perard. It is claimed here that both the inscriptions and images in the code are authored by Tomasz Treter. The manuscript’s attribution was based on palaeographic analysis (comparing the handwriting with Treter’s epistolography stored in the archives in Kraków and Olsztyn). According to the dates included in the code, the inscriptions were made between 20 June 1569 and 2 March 1575. The manu- script thus represents the earliest known evidence of Treter’s artistic activity. The auto- graph contains some previously unknown emblems by Treter, and a preliminary design of the emblem work Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio (published 1612). As many as 51 sketches in the manuscript overlap with the emblematic icons of the 1612 printing, all of which are more symbolic (hieroglyphic) representations of Christian virtues known from Treter’s printing, while there are no sketches of icons in the printed book refer- ring to specific biblical scenes. Therefore, there is still uncertainty about the authorship of these compositions, which also differ in the quality of rendition from the previously mentioned ones. Comparing the autograph with the artist’s later published work offers insight into his technique. The drawings in the manuscript show very clear inspiration of Claude Paradin, Gabriel Syméon, Aneau Barthélemy and Andrea Alciato, which is not always conspicuous in the printed version. The analysis includes the final note, mention- ing imprese with the painter Lorenzo Lotto, which explains correspondences between this artist’s work and the emblems from Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio.

Abstract:
Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis: preliminary investigations of language and its evolution The paper proposes a linguistic investigation of the first half of Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis. From the graphic, phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, a comparison is made between the printed edition from 1900 (the last published during the author’s lifetime), with the first edition from 1890 and an autographed version of the text, conserved at the L. Lagorio Civic Library in Imperia. The article frames the changes that took place within De Amicis’s theory and linguistic practise as well as in the linguistic landscape and in the grammatical and lexicographic reflection of his contemporaries. The linguistic choices of De Amicis have almost always been compared with those of Manzoni’s Quarantana: De Amicis is Manzonian, but not slavish, and with an autonomy of views in the formulation of linguistic-didactic proposals characterized by the use of contemporary Florentine which dissolves into classic Tuscan and, to a limited extent, in the use of the dialect. In Romanzo d’un maestro there is therefore a conciliatory linguistic eclecticism, also recognizable in the pages of Idioma gentile: although the Manzonian model is the preferred one, its openness towards alternative models dampens the most radical implications of the Master’s thought, in agreement with those who recognized the moderate character of De Amicis’s linguistic choices.

Abstract:
Tomasz Treter’s Emblem Designs This edition and translation of the newly discovered emblem designs by Tomasz Treter (1547–1610) is complementary to Alicja Bielak’s article (this issue) on a manuscript attributed to the Canon of Warmia. Anna Treter’s translation was intended to be faithful to the original in terms of content and style. The edition is based on the manuscript MM 378 from Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo (fol. 9 r.–21 r.). The 25 sketches of emblems to be elaborated on below open Treter’s private notebook, with entries dating from the period between 20 June 1569 and 2 March 1575, as evidenced by the dates inside the codex, which does not exclude the possibility that Treter made corrections and additions after 1575. The notebook includes designs of full-sized emblems with titles, mottos, epigrams and images. Sketches drawn with a quill present a general concept of a composition, without any details (disegni). The title of the notebook was proposed by the editor as the author did not name it. The name written on the spine of the codex (Imprese) is likely to have been supplied later by an unknown person. As far as the themes dealt with in the emblems are concerned, the epigrams are mostly excerpts from the works of Saint Gregory the Great, Saint Augustine and Tertullian, (which was every time cited in the explanatory notes). In the commentary, the sources of graphical inspirations are also traced to Claude Paradin. The other 73 designs from the Bergamo codex, not included in this edition, are sketches of the emblems Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio (Braniewo: Jerzy Schönfels, 1612).
