Cet article porte sur deux diplomates hongrois – les barons François de Tott (1733-1793) et Charles Émeric de Reviczky (1737-1793) – passés au service de deux puissances, la France et l’Autriche, au XVIIIe siècle. Tous deux étaient experts en langues orientales, écrivains et collectionneurs de livres et de manuscrits. Leurs bibliothèques, dont nous disposons des catalogues, au moins partiels, nous renseignent sur leurs intérêts, leurs goûts et ressources intellectuelles. La comparaison de leurs parcours, leur activités politiques et littéraires, ainsi que leur bibliophilie, nous permettent de découvrir deux intellectuels cultivés qui jouèrent un rôle d’intermédiaire important entre les cultures occidentale et orientale.

Through the concept of archeofictions, this article rethinks the interface between fiction and archaeology in nineteenth-century France. By rejecting conventional categories such as ‘archaeological novel’, the corpus of fictional works under scrutiny is expanded, to encompass lesser-studied authors such as Bibliophile Jacob (Paul Leroux) and Gustave Toudouze, in addition to Gustave Flaubert and Théophile Gautier. Throughout the nineteenth century, archaeology was a discipline-in-the-making, dominated by textual methods, and lacking institutional recognition. The analysis aims to show the ways in which nineteenth-century imaginative literature encapsulated early archaeology's quest for epistemic autonomy and methodological struggles, while embracing the new patterns of thought for framing the past promoted by the nascent discipline.

Les Relations et le Journal des jésuites attestèrent la présence de livres d’Heures en Nouvelle-France au XVIIe siècle. À la même époque, les hospitalières de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec réclamaient des livres d’Heures auprès de leurs bienfaiteurs européens, perpétuant certaines pratiques de dévotion héritées du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance. Deux livres d’Heures du XVe siècle sont conservés aux Archives des jésuites au Canada. Cette enquête vise à retracer les routes que purent emprunter les deux manuscrits avant d’entrer dans les Archives du Collège Sainte-Marie fondées en 1844 par le père Félix Martin. À la fin du XIXe et au début XXe siècle, les deux livres furent mis en valeur par le père Arthur Edward Jones, dans le cadre d’expositions consacrées aux manuscrits des premiers missionnaires jésuites en Amérique du Nord. Cette enquête vise aussi à prendre la mesure de l’intérêt que ces Heures suscitèrent chez les bibliophiles jésuites et laïcs. The Jesuit Relations and the Journal des jésuites attest to the presence of Books of Hours in New France during the seventeenth century. At the same time, the Hospitallers of the Hôtel-Dieu in Quebec were demanding Books of Hours from their European benefactors, thus continuing certain devotional practices inherited from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Two Books of Hours from the fifteenth century are preserved at the Archive of the Jesuits in Canada. This inquiry is aimed at retracing the routes that the two manuscripts had taken before arriving at the Archive of the Collège Sainte-Marie, which was founded in 1844 by Father Felix Martin. At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, the two books were given pride of place by Father Arthur Edward Jones at the centre of expositions devoted to manuscripts of the first Jesuit missionaries in North America. This investigation is additionally aimed at assessing the interest taken in these Hours among Jesuit bibliophiles and the laity.

By identifying, classifying and illustrating different signs of possession of Greek books, both manuscript and printed, belonging to Cardinal Giovanni Salviati (1490-1553), it was possible to reconnect to the same collection many volumes currently preserved in the Vatican Library, as well as in numerous others libraries in Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Germany. The history of the dispersal of such rich and exquisite collection also allowed retracing the origin of part of Pierre Séguier’s Greek library and the study of the career of two still quite unknown scribes : George Balsamon and Michael Hermodorus Lestarchos.

For the first time, the history of the publishing house of the third wave of Russian emigration “Syntaxis” is reconstructed, a brief outline of the history of the journal of the same name is given. The article provides a historiographic review of the study of the topic. The sources for funding the journal and the publishing house are identified. The activity of the “Syntaxis” printing house and the reasons of its origin are reconstructed. The role of the owners and founders of the publishing house M. V. Rozanova and A. D. Sinyavsky in the activities of the publishing house is shown. Particular attention is paid to the wellknown books by A. D. Sinyavsky. The publishing policy of “Syntaxis” is analysed. The thematic and typological analysis of its products is given. The publishing house has discovered the names of E. Limonov, V. Sorokin and others that are popular with modern Russian readers. Memoirs by A. Z. Steinberg attract the attention of scientists of various profiles. Non-traditional editions of “Syntaxis”are of interest to domestic and foreign bibliophiles and antiquarians. The activities of the publishing house “Maryina Roshcha” – a branch of “Syntaxis” is shown. Special attention is paid to the illustrators of the publishing house.

Abstract The private diaries written between 1898 and 1901 by the French jeweler, art collector, and bibliophile Henri Vever (1854-1942) provide fresh evidence about how important late-nineteenth century esthetic ‘languages’ (japonisme, Symbolism, Art Nouveau) were appropriated by artists committed to renewing the decorative arts; the diaries also address the meaning and status of books. For Vever, his extensive collection of Japanese pattern albums served, above all, a utilitarian function, as design primers and sources of information about printing and engraving techniques for craft modernizers. At the same time, included in the physical space of his ‘Japanese library’ and in line with Symbolist esthetics, Japanese books were, to Vever, suggestive bibelots, whose evocative powers were enhanced through inclusion in harmonious decors. Vever’s experiments in Art Nouveau book design, finally, reveal his additional conception of the book as both surface to be decorated and space of artistic collaboration underscoring the equality of all arts.

Les Chroniques de Monstrelet font mention de forteresses de manière laconique, avec quelques adjectifs peu explicites. Les descriptions sont rares et lacunaires. Pour Jean Pichore et le Maître de Philippe de Gueldre chargés d’illustrer ces récits, la difficulté n’est pas mince. Les images qu’ils donnent de ces lieux fortifiés sont pourtant parmi les plus réussies, quelle que soit la part des stéréotypes ou des éléments empruntés au réel. L’inventaire de ce qui définit la beauté de ces forts et de ces citadelles – hautes silhouettes emblématiques, masses imposantes au décor sobre ou surchargé, intérieurs luxueux - éclaire l’évolution du goût et des sensibilités des contemporains entre tradition française et influence italienne. Le cardinal Georges d’Amboise, bibliophile commanditaire de ces manuscrits et propriétaire de points forts qu’il construit ou réaménage, retrouvait ainsi, malgré invraisemblances et maladresses, le discours architectural, les concepts et le lexique de son temps.

La lecture d’une quarantaine de romans publiés en France entre 1980 et 2005, extraits d’un corpus beaucoup plus important, montre la tension entre mythe et fantasme qui sous-tend la représentation du livre et de la scène de lecture dans la fiction française contemporaine pour la jeunesse. Si les auteurs manifestent une ardeur de prosélytes dans la célébration des vertus de la lecture, force est de constater que, dans l’ensemble, ils ne montrent guère d’originalité dans leur démarche. Ils ne revisitent pas les grands mythes qui fondent la culture du livre, mais ils en réaffirment au contraire la permanence et s’érigent en gardiens du temple, en conservateurs du patrimoine culturel légitimé. L’objet-livre est saisi comme un symbole ou est détourné en fétiche investi par les fantasmes d’écrivains bibliophiles. Tout aussi stéréotypée, la scène de lecture rompt avec la réalité de sa pratique et tend à l’allégorie. Ces mythologies de la lecture courent le risque, finalement, de faire du livre un pur objet de fiction, une curiosité étrange et incompréhensible pour le jeune lecteur égaré dans un roman-musée.

This article is dedicated to Liesbeth van Houts, editor of the Gesta Normannorum ducum, generous mentor, colleague, and friend.This article offers an analysis, edition, and translation of the Brevis cronica compendiosa ducum Normannie, a historiographical account of the dukes of Normandy and their deeds, written at the turn of the fifteenth century by the Norman jurist and man of letters, Simon de Plumetot (1371–1443). Having all but escaped the attention of modern scholars, this study is the first to examine and publish the Brevis cronica. It not only demonstrates that the work is of greater importance than its rather scrappy form might at first suggest, but it also looks to place the text within the broader context of Simon's literary and bibliophilic practices and to determine its raison d’être. In doing so, it argues that the Brevis cronica was perhaps created as part of a much larger historiographical project, namely an extended chronicle of Normandy, written in the vernacular, the text of which is now lost. By exploring these important issues, the article sheds new light on a wide range of topics, from early humanist book collecting to the writing of history in France in the later Middle Ages.

Due to their likeness to incunabula and publishing specifics, post-incunabula are considered to be historical treasures and monuments of culture. The Rare Book and Manuscript Department of the National Library of Lithuania has in its holdings more than 800 post-incunabula, not including the ones kept at the Department of the National Archival Fund of Published Documents. The exact number is still unknown, since not all the books have been included into the electronic catalogue: more than 200 of them have only a card catalogue description and are awaiting a more detailed study. This article analyses specific features of part of the post-incunabula collection in the NLL Rare Book and Manuscript Department: their place of publication, publishers, thematics and provenances. Principal attention is accorded to the books that are rarer, more interesting and more important for Lithuania’s culture and book culture in general.The most of the post-incunabula kept in the Rare Book and Manuscript Department were published in Germany, many in Switzerland, France and Italy. There also is a small number of post-incunabula published in Poland (Cracow). Of the publications produced by Cracow’s printers, the article discusses those by Jan Haller (ca. 1467–1525), Hieronim Wietor (ca. 1480–1546) and Florian Ungler (d. 1536). It is necessary to mention Aldines – the publications by one of themost famous European printers, Aldo Manuzio (Lat. Aldus Manutius; ca. 1450–1515) and by his descendants. The article also touches upon the work of such acclaimed French publishers as Henri Estienne (lat. Henricus Stephanus, ca. 1460–1520), founder of the famous dinasty of printers, and the Lyonese printer Sébastien Gryphius (ca. 1493–1556). The Rare Book and Manuscript Department also keeps quite a few post-incunabula published by Johannes Frobenof Basel (1460–1537).As to the content aspect, the collection of post-incunabula in the department is versatile. For the most part, it is made up by religious literature: sermons, bibles, theological treatises, Church Fathers’ writings. There are many works by and commentaries on classical authors, of whom Cicero, at the time of the Renaissance viewed as the greatest authority on rhetoric, is the most famous one. The post-incunabula collection illuminates the emergence of the Reformations and the related spread of new ideas in the first half of the XVIth century. The Rare Book and Manuscript Department boasts a number of works by the founder of Protestantism, Martin Luther (1483–1546) and by the most acclaimed humanist of the times, Desiderius Erasmus (1469–1536).The provenances in the post-incunabula (manuscript inscriptions, stamps, bookplates) provide much interesting information. Most often found are ownership marks of the establishments that since the olden times had been preserving books: various monasteries, churches and priest seminaries,. The notable representative of the post-incunabulum culture is the Bernardine Order. According to the electronic catalogue, the Rare Book and Manuscript Departmenthas in its holdings 21 post-incunabula formerly kept by the library of the Tytuvėnai Bernardine Monastery. Most provenance inscriptions are from Kaunas Priest Seminary, the library of the Samogitian Priest Seminary, the library of the Vilnius Seminary and Kražiai College. Of the XIXth century personal libraries,particularly noteworthy are the collections of Jonas Krizostomas Gintila (1788–1857), XIXth-century bibliophile, hebraist and administrator of the Samogitian Diocese, and of Friedrich August Gotthold (1778–1858), educator and music theorist. A separate, rather abundant group of provenance inscriptions consists of the books that formerly belonged to Königsberg University. An in-depth study of all the post-incunabula kept in the NLL would significantly add to the existing research and broaden the understanding of old book culture.

Pour la douce France is the title of a painting by Romaine Brooks, an American artist who lived in France during World War I, who became a close friend of D’Annunzio at the times of La Capponcina. The newspaper Le Figaro published a picture of the painting in its May 5, 1915 issue together with several poetical texts of D’Annunzio. These materials were then included into an elegant folder, put on sale the same year in order to raise funding for the Red Cross. However, that volume remained a project: the publication was supposed to bring together his other texts and lectures on war to be subsequently edited and published by the librarian and bibliophile Édouard Champion. The project eventually produced only some drafts, which are now preserved in a private collection in Switzerland.

Abstract:Gotha, MS A 688 is currently preserved in the Universitäts- und Forschungsbibliothek Gotha, now kept at the Erfurt University Library in Germany. This is a luxurious manuscript of the neo-ArthurianWhat is remarkable, however, is the fact that such a lavish manuscript of an Arthurian romance was produced at that time. Not of course that manuscript was obsolete as from the introduction of printing; on the contrary, until much later in the Renaissance, a manuscript, much more than print, represented a very personal gift, for instance, and constituted a prestigious library. That said, only a few Arthurian manuscripts seem to have been produced in sixteenth-century France, let alone manuscripts prepared with such elegance, and of the few that survive, only those produced for the bibliophile Pierre Sala, which he had produced for a modernised

In 1858 EBB declared her son Pen “shall be a ‘citizen of the world’ after my own heart & ready for the millennium.”[i] Living in Italy for most of the fifteen years of her married life and passionately supporting Italian unification and independence in her mature poetry, Elizabeth Barrett Browning proudly regarded herself as “a citizen of the world.” But world citizenship is a perspective toward which EBB[ii] strove in her juvenilia long before she employed the phrase. Much of her childhood writing expresses her compulsion to address social and political issues and to transcend national prejudices in doing so. Recent critics have illuminated EBB’s gender and political views in fascinating detail. Marjorie Stone, to cite one example, has ably traced EBB’s commitment to “a poetry of the present and ‘the Real’” and her “turn towards human and contemporary subjects, away from the self-confessedly mystical and abstract subject matter of her 1838 volume….”[iii] We should recognize, however, that a strong political impulse surfaces in even her earliest writings and in her recollections of childhood. Her letters from early childhood demonstrate her precocious interest in power negotiations between nations, and also between individual citizens and governments. At age six, for example, she informed her mother and father that “the Rusians has beat the french killd 18.000 men and taken 14000 prisners”--an account which, though mistakenly attributing victory to the wrong side, documents her early interest in the Napoleonic wars (31 August 1812, BC 1: 9). More telling for consideration of her aesthetic-political theory, her earliest known poem—composed in the month she turned six—in four lines critiques the British government’s policy of impressing civilians (even Americans) to serve in the British navy.[iv] Entitled “On the Cruelty of Forcement to Man: Alluding to the Press Gang” (1812), it suggests in its final two lines the viewer’s--specifically the extremely young female poet’s--responsibility to grapple with the moral and ethical implications of this military practice: Ah! the poor lad in yonder boat, Forced from his wife, his friends, his home, Now gentle Maiden how can you, Look at the misery of his doom![v] Her last two lines pose a question that will shape her poetic career: How can you represent disturbing issues that demand your attention? Although her brief first poem does not resolve this conundrum, by expressing her query as an exclamation, she leaves no uncertainty that she must do so.
