Abstract:
In this work we study the solution of problems arising in the field of queries optimization in information retrieval from classical databases, through their formulation as mathematical problems in 0-1 variables. The first problem studied is the hyperbolic programming problem in 0-1 variables, for which we developed exact linear-time algorithms. The second problem studied is an extension of the former, here named as hyperbolic sum problem. For this problem we developed simulated annealing and steepest ascent-mildest descent (tabu search) heuristics, as well as exact branch-and-bound algorithms. All these methods were implemented and numerical results are presented. Concerning the problem of queries optimization, two basic problems were studied: periodical query and synthesis of new queries, which are formulated respectively as an hyperbolic programming problem and an hyperbolic sum problem. We have also done applications involving these problems, considering real data gathered from a database of Center of Nuclear Information from CNEN (Brazilian National Comission of Nucler Energy)

Ahmed, S. M. Zabed. "A user-centered design of a web-based interface to bibliographic databases." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6893.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports results of a research study into the usefulness of a user-centred approach for designing information retrieval interfaces. The main objective of the research was to examine the usability of an existing Web-based IR system in order to design a user-centred prototype Web interface. A series of usability experiments was carried out with the Web of Science. The first experiment was carried out using both novice and experienced users to see their performance and satisfaction with the interface. A set of search tasks was obtained from a user survey and was used in the study. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the time taken to complete the tasks, and the number of different search terms used between the two search groups. Novice users were significantly more satisfied with the interface than the experienced group. However, the experienced group was significantly more successful, and made fewer errors than the novice users. The second experiment was conducted on novices' learning and retention with the Web of Science using the same equipment, tasks and environment. The results of the original learning phase of the experiment showed that novices could readily pick up interface functionality when a brief training was provided. However, their retention of search skills weakened over time. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface also diminished from learning to retention. These findings suggested that the fundamental difficulties of searching IR systems still remain with the Web-based version. A heuristic evaluation was carried out to find out the usability problems in the Web of Science interface. Three human factors experts evaluate the interface. The heuristic evaluation was very helpful in identifying some interface design issues for Web IR systems. The most fundamental of these was increasing the match between system and the real world. The results of both the usability testing and the heuristic evaluations served as a baseline for designing a prototype Web interface. The prototype was designed based on a conceptual model of users' information seeking. Various usability evaluation methods were used to test the usability of the prototype system. After each round of testing, the interface was modified in accordance with the test findings. A summative evaluation of the prototype interface showed that both novice and experienced users improved their search performance. Comparative analysis with the earlier usability studies also showed significant improvements in performance and satisfaction with the prototype. These results show that user-centred methods can yield better interface design for IR systems.

Hood, William School of Information Library &amp Archive Studies UNSW. "An informetric study of the distribution of bibliographic records in online databases: a case study using the literature of Fuzzy Set Theory (1965-1993)." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Information Library and Archive Studies, 1999. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/18184.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the distribution of bibliographic records amongst online bibliographic databases. The topic of Fuzzy Set Theory over the period of 1965 to 1993 was chosen to provide the case study for this investigation. From the DIALOG database host, searches were conducted on 114 databases to determine the number of journal article records relating to the topic of Fuzzy Sets. Both the number of records in each database, as well as the overlap of coverage between the databases were calculated. Six counting techniques were developed to allocate records to databases based on different methods for handling records that were duplicated between databases. When duplicate records are included, the top database accounts for 19% of the records; when duplicates are removed, the top database was found to account for 37% of the records. The distribution of records in databases was found to conform to the Bradford-Zipf hyperbolic distribution. Various other analyses were undertaken including: the duplicate records themselves, the total size of the DIALOG database system over time and the density of Fuzzy Set records in databases over time. A secondary aim of this study was to perform an informetric study on the literature of Fuzzy Set Theory itself. Results obtained include an analysis of the growth of the Fuzzy Set literature, an analysis of the journals covering the topic of Fuzzy Sets, an analysis of the terminology used in describing topics related to Fuzzy Sets. Also, the Ulrich's database was used to provide a subject classification of the journals to analyse the diffusion of the topic of Fuzzy Sets into other disciplines. Apart from the discipline of mathematics, the top disciplines into which Fuzzy Sets have diffused were found to be applied physics, systems and computing. The third aim of the thesis was to refine and develop the methodology used to perform large scale informetric studies using data from a variety of online bibliographic databases. Commercially available software was used wherever possible, but where this was not possible or infeasible, custom written programs were developed to perform various steps in the methodology.

Masters, Gary E. (Gary Everett). "The Effects of Increased Equipment Speed on Online Database Searching Practices." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1987. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc332315/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study reports changes in online database searching at North Texas State University when equipment speed was increased. Data were from database vendor invoices and price and sale data of online equipment. The hypotheses examined the relationship between the decrease in the cost of online equipment and the change to faster online equipment and the change in the number of databases that changed for online types. The change in equipment was related to changes in the number of offline prints per hour, the average time per search, the average number of descriptors per search, the number of searches per month, and the rank order of database use over the studied period. The increase in the number of databases with billed types was related to the number of online billed types produced. The number of prints was related to the number of billed types. Time spent online was examined for annual seasonal cycles. The major statistical tool was time-series analysis, although other methods were applied.

Abstract:
This study evaluates the content coverage of Google Scholar and three commercial databases (Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Bibliography of the History of Art and Art Full Text/Art Index Retrospective) on the subject of art history. Each database is tested using a bibliography method and evaluated based on Péter Jacsó’s scope criteria for online databases. Of the 472 articles tested, Google Scholar indexed the smallest number of citations (35%), outshone by the Arts & Humanities Citation Index which covered 73% of the test set. This content evaluation also examines specific aspects of coverage to find that in comparison to the other databases, Google Scholar provides consistent coverage over the time range tested (1975-2008) and considerable access to article abstracts (56%). Google Scholar failed, however, to fully index the most frequently cited art periodical in the test set, the Artforum International. Finally, Google Scholar’s total citation count is inflated by a significant percentage (23%) of articles which include duplicate, triplicate or multiple versions of the same record.

Middleton, Michael Robert. "A conceptual framework for information management : formation of a discipline." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2007. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/16305/1/Michael_Middleton_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the research was to investigate the formation of the information management discipline, propose a framework by which it is presently understood, and test that framework within a particular area of application, namely the provision of scientific and technological information (STI) services. The work is presented as a PhD by Publication which comprises a narrative that encompasses the series of published papers, and includes excerpts from the book written to illustrate the province of the discipline. In thee book the disciplinary context is detailed and exemplified based upon information management domains. The book consolidates information management principles within a framework defined by these operational, analytical and administrative domains. It was created by a redaction of prior epistemological proposals; an analysis of the understanding of practice that has been shaped by professional, institutional and information science influences; and demonstration of practice within the domain framework. The disciplinary framework was then used in a series of STI case studies where it was found to provide an effective description of information management. Together, the book and subsequent case studies provided illustration of the principles utilised in information management and the way that they are practiced within different domains, along with an explanation of the manner in which the information management discipline has been formed. These should assist with direction of future research and scholarship particularly with respect to factors relevant to information services and indicators for their successful application in future. It is anticipated that this generalised description of the practices across the range of interpretations of information management should enable practicing information professionals to appreciate the relationship of their own work to disciplines that are converging towards similar purpose, such as through a clearer indication of the extent to which technical and management standards may be applied, and performance analysis undertaken. Complementary outcomes that were achieved during the course of the work were: a comparative analysis of thesauri in the information field which shows that in this field, the ways that information professionals represent themselves remains unreconciled; an historical examination of Australian STI services that provides pointers to their effective continuation; and a reconsideration of the relationship between librarianship and information management. The work is presented as a compilation of papers that comprise firstly extracts from the book to exemplify its consolidation of information management principles, then a number of published and submitted papers that examine how principles have been applied in practice. This is in the context of six case studies of Australian STI services including interviews with creators and developers, and analysis of historical information.

Introduction: A high-quality electronic search is essential in ensuring accuracy and comprehensivness in identifying potentially relevant records in conducting a systematic review. To assist researchers in identifying terms when formulating a sensitive search strategy, librarians and educators instruct researchers to consult and include preferred and non-preferred terms of the controlled database. However, by using all available terms in the thesaurus (i.e. subject headings), strategies can be lengthy and very laborious. Objective: To identify the most efficient method for searching in both Medline through PubMed and EMBASE, covering search terms with different spellings, direct and indirect orders, and association (or lack thereof) with MeSH and EMTREE terms. Method: In our cross-sectional study of search strategies, we selected and analysed 37 search strategies specifically developed for the anesthesiology field. These search strategies were adapted in order to cover all potentially relevant search terms in terms of different spellings and direct and indirect orders, most efficiently. Results: When adapted to include different spellings and direct and indirect orders, adapted versions of the selected search strategies retrieved the same number of search results in the Medline (mean of 61,3%) and higher number in EMBASE (mean of 63,9%) of the analyzed sample. The number of results retrieved by the searches analysed was not identical using the association or not of MeSH and EMTREE terms; however the association of these terms from both controlled vocabularies retireved a large number of records compared to the use of either one of them. Conclusions: In view of these results, we recommend the use of search terms which include preferred and non-preferred terms (i.e., different spellings and direct/indirect order of the same term) and associated MeSH and EMTREE terms, in order to develop highly-sensitive search strategies for systematic reviews.

Abstract:
Idioma, tipo do documento, indicador Scimago (cites per doc - 2 years) e categoria do assunto do periódico influenciaram significantemente o número de citações recebidas
Introduction: The challenge of increasing the impact of Brazilian science has been much discussed. Compared with other countries, Brazil has a high publication rate, but with low citation index per document. While sponsoring and research institutions are proposing international cooperation as a means of increasing the impact of science, journal editors question this demand. Objective: To evaluate whether, in Brazilian medical journals, the number of received citations is influenced by the type of authors affiliation and other variables related to the document or to the journal. Methods: A total of 61 medical journals published in Brazil in 2012 were analyzed, SCImago and Scopus were used to extract the articles and their data. The number of citations of a document over five years was analyzed according to the authors\' affiliation (national, international or in collaboration), language and document type, SCImago index and journal subject category. Results: Univariate analyses showed that all tested variables influenced the number of received citations. After adjusting for covariates by multivariate analysis, we observed an increase of citations in 0.17 (95% CI: 0.094-0.246) for documents with affiliation in collaboration when compared to national affiliation. A significant increase in the number of citations was observed in bilingual documents (English and Portuguese) 0.329 (95% CI: 0.256-0.402) and only English 0.158 (95% CI: 0.086-0.231) when compared to documents in Portuguese, document type: Article 1.716 (95% CI: 1.410-2.021) and Review 2.931 (95% CI: 2.618-3.245) when compared to Article-in-Press and that have subject category Hematology 1.280 (95% CI: 1.019-1.540), among others, when compared to geriatrics and gerontology. Conclusion: Documents with authorship in collaboration increased, in a discreet way, the citation index in journals of interest, when compared to those with national authorship. Language, document type, SCImago index (cites per doc 2 years) and journal subject category significantly influenced the number of received citations

With the advent of new technologies are increasing forms of publication and access to scientific information in health. Studies show that there are some barriers encountered by users to search, access and evaluate scientific information effectively. The health sector has a wide informational range available on the Internet and researchers must obtain subsidies to select what is really important, absorb and generate knowledge, so that, through research, can organize and direct their studies aimed at a consistent intellectual production, in accordance with the scientific progress. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze the search behavior of post graduate students of Programa de Pós-Graduação de Ensino em Ciências da Saúde. In this investigation, we chose a qualitative research that includes a descriptive approach to the research subject and the search for exploratory in existing national and international scientific literature on the proposed theme. The instruments used for data collection were electronic questionnaire and group discussion for better understanding of reality, seeking more agreement on the search process by the post graduate students. The data were analyzed based on the theoretical framework, which were highlighted three central themes: the process of searching for information by post graduate students; difficulties encountered by post graduate students in the search for information in databases; facilities found by post graduate students in the search for information in databases. It was identified the need for actions that enhance information literacy at various stages of the research process, which could directly impact the quality of scientific publications.

Abstract:
Bibliographic data provide well established means of the information resource description. Nowadays, there is obvious need to make this data more web-friendly and web-compatible, while web is mostly seen as the only place where people are seeking information. The proposed solution is to change the traditional bibliographic data representation format. Semantic Web initiative presents enhancement of the current web with machine processable data semantics (meaning). The main goal is to manage more effective information processing by web applications that brings up many benefits for web users. Linked data are seen as practical means to reach the semantic web vision. This initiative promotes best practices of publishing, connecting and sharing structural data on the web. This thesis reports the transformation of bibliographic records' format in case of Database of publishing activities at University of Economics, Prague (PCVSE). Benefits of linked data publishing model are demonstrated on the realized projects. The main part describes practical experiences gained during the implementation of RDF framework in phases of data modelling, interlinking and exposing the dataset. The linked data publishing model is seen there as an optimal web-compatible bibliographic data representation format.

Abstract:
The advent of the Internet and its constant evolution demanded the development of health information systems, which has provided nursing students broad, fast and efficient access to information, adding quality to bibliographic searches. Despite the improved and dynamic actualization of these information resources and their free access, some students still experience difficulties when attempting to search and retrieve information. This qualitative study identifies and analyzes how these bibliographic searches are performed in terms of search strategies, choice of subject descriptors, use of bibliographic databases, recovery of full text documents and also investigates the difficulties faced and advancements achieved in this process by undergraduate nursing students from the Bachelor and Teaching Degree Programs at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto, College of Nursing. A total of 21 students from these programs were interviewed in November 2010. Some themes emerged from the thematic analysis: 1 - Needs and information-seeking practices: difficulties faced by nursing students; 2 - Organization of teaching bibliographic searches and the role of professors; and 3 - The librarian as an educator. Google stands out as the main search resource on the web used by students given the difficulties faced in accessing bibliographic databases, English-based databases, and in the recovery of full texts. Students point to the need to obtain guidance and support from professors and also stress one-time educational activities developed by the librarian. The need to review the teaching of bibliographic searching is identified in order to include educational activities in a more integrated manner with the courses from the involved programs over the educational process, reconstruct the pedagogical practices of such activities based on the problematizing framework, and strengthen the partnership between professors and librarians. This study also encourages reflecting on the education and professional practice of librarians toward a more significant participation in supporting the development of undergraduate programs in the university context.

Abstract:
The Integrative Level Classification (ILC) research project is experimenting with a knowledge organization system based on phenomena rather than disciplines. Each phenomenon has a constant notation, which can be combined with that of any other phenomenon in a freely faceted structure. Citation order can express differential focality of the facets. Very specific subjects can have long classmarks, although their complexity is reduced by various devices. Freely faceted classification is being tested by indexing a corpus of about 3300 papers in the interdisciplinary domain of bioacoustics. The subjects of these papers often include phenomena from a wide variety of integrative levels (mechanical waves, animals, behaviour, vessels, fishing, law, ...) as well as information about the methods of study, as predicted in the León Manifesto. The archive is recorded in a MySQL database, and can be fed and searched through PHP Web interfaces. Indexer's work is made easier by mechanisms that suggest possible classes on the basis of matching title words with terms in the ILC schedules, and synthesize automatically the verbal caption corresponding to the classmark being edited. Users can search the archive by selecting and combining values in each facet. Search refinement should be improved, especially for the cases where no record, or too many records, match the faceted query. However, experience is being gained progressively, showing that freely faceted classification by phenomena, theories, and methods is feasible and working.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to answer the following questions: What type of vocabulary is used in the humanities? What does this implicate when it comes to indexing in the humanities? How do humanities scholars seek information and what type of information do they need? What consequences does this have when it comes to the development of humanities databases? How is the MLA International Bibliography organized? How does its indexing system – CIFT – work? How does the MLA International Bibliography correspond with the needs of the humanities scholar? The study shows that the type of vocabulary used in the humanities differs significantly from that used in the sciences. Therefore, information retrieval is often said to be problematic in the humanities when compared to the sciences. This is, however, not completely true. If consideration is taken to the different type of vocabulary used in the humanities, subject access proves to be more straightforward than has been generally recognized. The study also shows that humanities scholars have slightly other information needs than scientists. For example, they use different types of publications in their research. On a whole, the MLA International Bibliography corresponds well with the different needs of humanities scholars. The vocabulary used in its thesaurus is based on the type of vocabulary actually used by them. The database also includes references to various publication types. Even so, the MLA International Bibliography could do with a few improvements in order to enhance its value to the research community. The inclusion of abstracts, more references to internationally published material and improved currency when it comes to time lapse between primary source and online version are areas that needs to be improved.

Abstract:
In spite of huge document sets for cross-database literature searches, academic users expect a high ratio of relevant and qualitative documents in result sets. It is particularly the order and structure of the listed results (ranking) that play an important role when designing search systems alongside the direct full text access for documents. Users also expect flexible information systems which allow influencing the ranking of documents and application of alternative ranking techniques. This thesis proposes two value-added approaches for search systems which treat typical problems in searching scientific literature and seek to improve the retrieval situation on a measurable level. The two value-added services, semantic treatment of heterogeneity (the example of cross-concordances) and re-ranking on Bradfordizing, which are applied in different search phases, are described in detail and their effectiveness in typical subject-specific searches is evaluated in the empirical part of the thesis. The preeminent goal of the thesis is to study if the proposed, alternative re-ranking approach Bradfordizing is operable in the domain of bibliographic databases, and if the approach is profitable, i.e. serves as a value added, for users in information systems. We used topics and data from two evaluation projects (CLEF and KoMoHe) for the tests. The intellectually assessed documents come from seven academic abstracting and indexing databases representing social science, political science, economics, psychology and medicine. The evaluation of the cross-concordances (82 topics altogether) shows that the retrieval results improve significantly for all cross-concordances, indicating that interdisciplinary cross-concordances have the strongest (positive) effect on the search results. The evaluation of Bradfordizing re-ranking (164 topics altogether) shows that core zone (core journals) documents display significantly higher precision than was seen for documents in zone 2 and zone 3 (periphery journals) for most test series. This post-Bradfordizing relevance advantage can be demonstrated empirically across a very broad basis of topics and two independent document corpora as well for journals and monographs.

Abstract:
Every scientific research begins with a literature review that includes an extensive bibliographic search. Such searches are known to be difficult and time-consuming because of the vast amount of topical material existing in today's ever-changing technology base. Keeping up-to-date with related literature and being aware of the most recent publications require extensive time and effort. The need for a WWW-based software tool for collecting and providing access to this scientific body of knowledge is undeniable. The study explained herein deals with this problem by developing an efficient, advanced, easy-to-use tool, WebBiblio, that provides a globally accessible WWW environment enabling the collection and dissemination of searchable bibliographies comprised of abstracts and keywords. This thesis describes the design, structure and features of WebBiblio, and explains the ideas and approaches used in its development. The developed system is not a prototype, but a production system that exploits the capabilities of the WWW. Currently, it is used to publish three VV&T bibliographies at the WWW site: http://manta.cs.vt.edu/biblio. With its rich set of features and ergonomically engineered interface, WebBiblio brings a comprehensive solution to solving the problem of globally collecting and providing access to a diverse set of bibliographies.

Abstract:
Objetives. To determine the factors associated with regular use of sources of information by medical students in four cities in Peru. Materials and methods. In this cross-sectional study, medical students were surveyed in four cities of Peru, gathering information on the use of 14 sources of information and other educational and computer variables. Frequent use of the information source was defined if the respondent reported that they access an information source at least once a week. P values were obtained by generalized linear models adjusted for each respondent site. Results. 2,300 students were surveyed. The median age was 21 years and 53% were women. Having received training in the use of sources increased the use in twelve of the consulted bases, not in SciELO (p=0.053) or in the university library (p=0.509).When adjusting for owning a laptop/netbook, these associations remained. After also adjusting for owning a smartphone the association was lost with the BVS Peru database (p=0.067). The association was also lost after making the final adjustment, if the respondent had carried out any research activities. Conclusions. The frequent use of sources of information is associated with having received training, conducting research and use of information technologies and communication. This should be taken into account in training programs and continuous improvement in undergraduate education.

Abstract:
Subject of information entity is one of the fundamental concepts in the field of information science. Subject of any document represents its intellectual potential -- 'aboutness' of the document. Traditionally, subject (along with title and author) is the one of three major ways to access information, so subject metadata plays a central role in this process and the role is constantly growing. Previous research concluded that the larger bibliographic database is, the richer subject vocabularies and classification schemes are needed to support information discovery. Further, a high proportion of information objects are unretrievable without subject headings in metadata records. This exploratory study provides the analysis of the subject metadata in MARC 21 bibliographic records created in 2020; and develops understanding of the level and patterns of 'aboutness' representation in the MARC 21 bibliographic records. Study also examines how these records apply the recent RDA and MARC21 guidelines and features intended to support functionality in a Linked Data environment. Methods of Social Network Analysis were applied along with content analysis, to answer research questions of this study. Suggestions for future research, implications for education, and practical recommendations for library metadata creation and management are discussed.

The rapid progress of Science and Technology in recent decades coupled with the advent of information and communication technologies has led to tremendous growth in the volume of information produced and made available, with replacement and diversity of formats. Therefore, on the one hand, there has been the expansion in the supply of information sources by commercial producers, scientific and institutional facilities with great access to information, as well as the changing behavior of users who have become more virtual and independent as they go less to the library to carry out their search activities, location and obtain information and documents; on the other hand, the lack of the users' competence or difficulty in dealing with these new information resources. Against this changing background, it is important that users and librarians play new roles. The user must be able to be autonomous in the information universe, and the librarian should play the role of a mediator. It is identified as the problem of this research that a large number of existing sources of information available in the area of Science and Technology in its various media and types is often an impediment for users to identify, be aware of and access them independently, efficiently and effectively. Thus, the aims of this research are: to investigate and identify trends for the application of tools to mediate the processes of searching, accessing and learning the use of information sources in academic libraries; to consider proposals in the use of tools for online bibliographic databases and suggest tool tips, their features and capabilities of their use that may be adopted by academic libraries. The methodology used was exploratory research and the method adopted was the content analysis through a quantitative and qualitative approach, including the collection of specific data regarding the availability of tools to mediate the use of sources of information on websites of university libraries. The study sample consisted of 24 libraries selected from the best national and international universities (Webometrics Ranking of World s Universities, World University Rankings 2011-2012, Índice Geral de Cursos). The results identified a general overview of how university libraries are conducting the mediation of information sources, especially in relation to bibliographic databases, and considering the tools that represent an incremental innovation in how libraries can play their roles as mediators, encouraging the development of competence in information from their users and providing tools for the process of knowledge generation and thereby help users to make the best use of technology and information sources in their academic and professional activities.

Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) is one of the most important technologies in data warehouse systems, which enables multidimensional analysis of data. It represents a very powerful and flexible analysis tool to manage within the data deeply by operating computation. OLAP has been the subject of improvements and extensions across the board with every new problem concerning domain and data; for instance, multimedia, spatial data, sequence data and etc. Basically, OLAP was introduced to analyze classical structured data. However, information networks are yet another interesting domain. Extracting knowledge inside large networks is a complex task and too big to be comprehensive. Therefore, OLAP analysis could be a good idea to look at a more compressed view. Many kinds of information networks can help users with various activities according to different domains. In this scenario, we further consider bibliographic networks formed on the bibliographic databases. This data allows analyzing not only the productions but also the collaborations between authors. There are research works and proposals that try to use OLAP technologies for information networks and it is called Graph OLAP. Many Graph OLAP techniques are based on a cube of graphs. In this thesis, we propose a new approach for Graph OLAP that is graphs enriched by cubes (GreC). In a different and complementary way, our proposal consists in enriching graphs with cubes. Indeed, the nodes or/and edges of the considered network are described by a cube. It allows interesting analyzes for the user who can navigate within a graph enriched by cubes according to different granularity levels, with dedicated operators. In addition, there are four main aspects in GreC. First, GreC takes into account the structure of network in order to do topological OLAP operations and not only classical or informational OLAP operations. Second, GreC has a global view of a network considered with multidimensional information. Third, the slowly changing dimension problem is taken into account in order to explore a network. Lastly, GreC allows data analysis for the evolution of a network because our approach allows observing the evolution through the time dimensions in the cubes. To evaluate GreC, we implemented our approach and performed an experimental study on a real bibliographic dataset to show the interest of our proposal. GreC approach includes different algorithms. Therefore, we also validated the relevance and the performances of our algorithms experimentally

This research presents the development of method for search and information retrieval in specialized databases aiming the production of scientific knowledge in healthcare, with emphasis on Evidence-Based Health. We have used, in this work, different techniques considering the specificities of each stage: exploratory research, hypothetical deductive method and qualitative empirical case study. It mobilizes the theoretical and methodological foundations in Information Science and Health, appling them to areas as knowledge organization and information retrieval, Semantic Web, Evidence-Based Health and Scientific Methodology. Two experiments were performed: a case study in Orthopedics and Traumatology in order to identify and establish criterions for search, retrieval, organization and selection of information, so that these criterions can integrate part of the methodology of scientific work in healthcare; and analysis of kinds of search and retrieval and mappings on Knowledge Organization Systems-KOS available in Metathesaurus, considering the scope of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), and in the BioPortal National Center for Biomedical Ontology, both in the biomedical field. The UMLS provides access to 151 KOS, and the BioPortal provides a set of 302 ontologies. We presented proposals for construction of search strategies by using Knowledge Organization System mapped and interoperate as well as for conducting literature searches for preparation of scientific papers in healthcare.

Abstract:
A Dissertation for the partial fulfillment of M.S. (Software Systems) Degree from BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI (RAJASTHAN); 2001.
The project aims to provide access through web to a bibliographic database called IndMED. The database is a product of Indian Medlars Centre (IMC, a division of National Informatics Centre) and has data relating to references to articles published in India’s learned biomedical journals. The scope of this project is limited to providing a web-based user interface for database searching and developing the CGI for Web-Database Connectivity. The project was planned to ensure its scheduled completion. A survey of relevant research and technologies pertaining to Web Interface, Web-Database Connectivity and DBMS have been made and briefly described in the dissertation. Interview, Questionnaire and Observation of similar systems were utilized to determine the requirements of the proposed system. Specification of the proposed system was then based on the requirements. After the requirements and the specification of the proposed system was finalized an Analysis Model consisting of Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs) and Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) was developed. Design of the system was then developed for the sub-systems – Web-Interface, Web-database Connectivity and DBMS - so the requirements and specifications are met. The Web-Interface mainly consists of html pages i.e. Simple Search Form, Minimal Search Form and Advanced Search Form and the dynamically generated by CGI the Search Result Screen. The Web-Database Connectivity sub-system consists of PERL Scripts dealing with Processing of data submitted from html forms, Variables assignment, Error Trap, Formulation of query string which can passed on to the DBMS sub-system and Html Patching of the output of the database in response to the query. The implementation of the system includes: the screens along with html code written for various search forms and generated by the CGI for the Web-Interface, Perl Scripts (IMSS.PL; IMAS.PL; IMRS.PL) for the CGI and the Database Structure, Fields included in Inverted File Index of the Database and Display Formats for the DBMS sub-system. The system thus developed was tested to meet the tests prescribed by the system specification. The final product has been integrated into the Home-page of IMC at the URL http://indmed.nic.in . A user help document for searching is also included. The system developed has scope for future research and refinement in regard to relevancy ranking, federated searching, links to full text articles and other material relevant to the user query available on the Internet along with the results from IndMED.

Abstract:
In Austria, there are many written documents in arabic script. The reason that they are not known properly is to be found in the lack of resources (personal and financial), ignorance and disinterest. The aim of this work is to find out how to locate these documents systematically and how to make them accessible. For this one has to ask: "Who could have come into contact with people who wrote in Arabic script?" and "Where could the documents and items have ended up?" After archives and museums one has to look especially at monastery libraries and generally collecting libraries (in opposition to public libraries). Flukes and single occurrences can not be excluded. The best is to make the results accessible in a relational SQL database with the trancription system of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft.

Abstract:
Is it possible for a student to create an information resource that helps someone in need? In a two month span, the student author conducted research into the availability of environmental articles and collected over 250 academic papers and grey literature. Library tools and services provided by The University of Arizona Libraries on Southwestern Environmental and Health Issues specifically targeting Native American communities were used to near exclusivity. Locating articles for the database was done quicker than expected by a Library Science student (the author) who had some previous familiarity with academic databases such as PubMED™ and Web of Science™. The database itself was designed in Drupal as a Deep Web (not public) Internet project and completed before schedule. Over the course of this research it was discovered that by properly utilizing library resources its possible for motivated students at the collegiate level to create a database of articles that could aid underserved groups with their understanding of desired specialized issues.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of electronic databases by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, with a view to proposing a set of recommendations based on the findings that would contribute to a more effective use of these databases. The study focussed on the use students made of electronic databases provided by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Library and any other electronic databases which provided information and were needed for their studies. The study population consisted of 500 registered postgraduate students. The survey instrument used to elicit data was a self-administered questionnaire that was distributed to a sample population of 100 postgraduate students. The questionnaire sought to establish if postgraduate students used electronic databases, which electronic databases postgraduate students used and the reasons for their choice, to identify problems postgraduate students encountered, how students became aware of the databases and how often they used the available databases. A total of 65 postgraduate students responded, a response rate of 65%. The results were analysed in terms of frequency responses and they are graphically displayed in the form of tables and graphs. The study found that postgraduate students did use the electronic databases, but a few of the databases were not used. A number of problems were experienced when using the databases. Students became aware of the availability of electronic databases from a variety of sources such as friends, library orientation programmes and academic staff. Search engines were identified as a resource that was very popular with almost all the students. There was a need for training on use of the databases and a need for improving access for all campus and off-campus users. Recommendations for action and further research, based on the conclusions of the study, are made.
