Abstract:
The Christian religion is based on the Bible, and no book had a greater influence on early modern English literature. The Bible was at the heart of the early modern culture of translation, and the English language was affected by the efforts of William Tyndale, Miles Coverdale, and others to properly render the Bible’s original Hebrew and Greek. Since understanding and following the Bible was necessary to salvation, and the Bible is often difficult, Bible reading also demanded interpretation, and this led to the proliferation of interpretive aids: biblical paratexts, sermons, and commentaries. Translation is necessarily interpretive, in the choices made in English Bibles, but especially in broader paraphrases and adaptations, from the metrical Psalms of Sternhold and Hopkins and Philip and Mary Sidney to the biblical epics of Du Bartas, Abraham Cowley, and Milton. Much of early modern literature could be described as an effort to understand the Bible.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the development of Lucy Hutchinson’s religious views and discusses the role of writing in both recording and driving her formation as a Puritan through the decades of Civil War, Interregnum, and Restoration. It shows how she and her husband, the regicide Colonel John Hutchinson, together came to repudiate the Laudian and Presbyterian national churches and explores the ways in which her Puritanism, especially her deepening commitment to the Calvinist doctrines of double predestination and divine providence, shaped her major literary achievements—the Life of her husband and her paraphrase of Genesis—and complicated her involvement with the translation of Lucretius. This chapter provides a reassessment of Lucy Hutchinson as an early modern female religious author from the new perspectives opened up by recent editions of her Lucretius and her biblical epic.

West, John. Dryden and the Cultivation of the Restoration Pindaric Ode. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816409.003.0004.

Abstract:
This chapter traces Dryden’s responses to the development of the Restoration Pindaric ode. In Renaissance Europe, Pindar’s Greek odes were commonly seen as examples of inspired poetry. Abraham Cowley’s vernacular odes echoed and modified this tradition by presenting irregular Pindaric metre and form as a vehicle for paraphrasing biblical scripture. The chapter sees how Dryden thought through this link between inspiration and the Pindaric in odes including ‘To the Memory of Anne Killigrew’ and ‘An Ode for Secelia’s Day’. The heavenly origins of music and its ability to provoke the passions were central to Dryden’s adaptation of the form’s inspired heritage. Such ideas developed politicized associations with military violence after William III came to the throne in 1689. The chapter argues that Dryden’s late ode ‘Alexander’s Feast’ is engaged in a close, critical conversation with Williamite sublime poetics as practised especially by John Dennis.
