Abstract:
Alloy-type anodes are the most promising candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their impressive Na storage capacity and suitable voltage platform. However, the implementation of alloy-type anodes is significantly hindered by their huge volume expansion during the alloying/dealloying processes, which leads to their pulverization and detachment from current collectors for active materials and the unsatisfactory cycling performance. In this work, bimetallic Bi−Sb solid solutions in a porous carbon matrix are synthesized by a pyrolysis method as anode material for SIBs. Adjustable alloy composition, the introduction of porous carbon matrix, and nanosized bimetallic particles effectively suppress the volume change during cycling and accelerate the electrons/ions transport kinetics. The optimized Bi1Sb1@C electrode exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance with an ultralong cycle life (167.2 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 over 8000 cycles). In situ X-ray diffraction investigation is conducted to reveal the reversible and synchronous sodium storage pathway of the Bi1Sb1@C electrode: (Bi,Sb) Na(Bi,Sb) Na3(Bi,Sb). Furthermore, online electrochemical mass spectrometry unveils the evolution of gas products of the Bi1Sb1@C electrode during the cell operation.

Abstract:
We fabricated superlattice films composed of Bi2 bilayers (BLs) and Bi2Te3 quintuple layers (QLs) by annealing pure Bi2Te3 films. It was found that Te desorbs from the QL to form the BL with an activation energy of 2.7 eV. Eventually, two distinct stoichiometric phases were formed, Bi1Te1 (QL–BL–QL) and Bi4Te3 (QL–BL), as evidenced by scanning transmission emission microscopy measurements. The surface-state dispersion was measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and the topological nature of each sample is discussed. Our method offers a convenient and simple way to fabricate superlattice films with different topological properties.

Abstract:
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has so far infected 762 million people with over 6.9 million deaths worldwide. Broad-spectrum viral inhibitors that block the initial stages of infection by reducing virus binding and proliferation, thereby reducing disease severities, are still an unmet global medical need. We studied Bi121, which is a standardized polyphenolic-rich compound isolated from Pelargonium sidoides, against recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2S (mutations in the spike protein) of six different variants of SARS-CoV-2. Bi121 was effective at neutralizing all six rVSV-ΔG-SARS-CoV-2S variants. The antiviral activity of Bi121 was also assessed against SARS-CoV-2 variants (USA WA1/2020, Hongkong/VM20001061/2020, B.1.167.2 (Delta), and Omicron) in Vero cells and HEK-ACE2 cell lines using RT-qPCR and plaque assays. Bi121 showed significant antiviral activity against all the four SARS-CoV-2 variants tested, suggesting a broad-spectrum activity. Bi121 fractions generated using HPLC showed antiviral activity in three fractions out of eight against SARS-CoV-2. The dominant compound identified in all three fractions using LC/MS/MS analysis was Neoilludin B. In silico structural modeling studies with Neoilludin B showed that it has a novel RNA-intercalating activity toward RNA viruses. In silico findings and the antiviral activity of this compound against several SARS-CoV-2 variants support further evaluation as a potential treatment of COVID-19.

Vavilov Journal of Genetics and Breeding 26, no. 6 (October 9, 2022): 575–82. http://dx.doi.org/10.18699/vjgb-22-70.

Abstract:
Alkanmonooxygenase enzymes AlkB and Cyp153 are responsible for the aerobic degradation of n-alkanes of petroleum and petroleum products. To prove the usage of n-alkanes from oil and petroleum products by hydrocarbon- oxidizing bacteria isolated from aviation kerosene TS-1 and automobile gasoline AI-95, the detection of the key genes alkB, Alk1, Alk2, Alk3 and Cyp153 encoding alkanmonooxygenases AlkB and Cyp153 (responsible for the oxidation of hydrocarbons with a certain chain length) was carried out. It was found that bacterial strains isolated from TS-1 jet fuel, except Deinococcus sp. Bi7, had at least one of the studied n-alkane degradation genes. The strains Sphingobacterium multivorum Bi2; Alcaligenes faecalis Bi3; Rhodococcus sp. Bi4; Sphingobacterium sp. Bi5; Rhodococcus erythropolis Bi6 contained the alkB gene. In the strains of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria isolated from gasoline AI- 95, this alkanmonooxygenase gene was not detected. Using the real-time PCR method, the activity of the alkB gene in all bacterial strains isolated from petroleum products was analyzed and the number of its copies was determined. By real-time PCR using a primer with a different sequence of nucleotides to detect the alkB gene, its activity was established in all bacterial strains isolated from gasoline AI-95; besides, the strain Paenibacillus agaridevorans Bi11 was assigned to the group with a high level of its activity (1290 copies/ml). According to the assessment of the growth of isolated hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria on a solid Evans mineral medium with the addition of the model mixture of hydrocarbons, the strains were divided into three groups. The distributions of strains of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria in the groups based on the activity of the alkB gene and groups formed based on the growth ability and use of the model mixture of hydrocarbons and petroleum products were found to be consistent. The results obtained indicate that we need to use a complex of molecular and physiological methods for a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of the studied genes in bacteria and to assess their activity in the strains of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria capable of biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Abstract:
Abstract Recently, Bi1Te1 has been proved to be a dual topological insulator (TI), a new subclass of symmetry protected topological phases and predicted to be higher order topological insulator (HOTI). Being a dual TI, Bi1Te1is said to host quasi-1D surface states (SS) due to weak TI phase and topological crystalline insulating (TCI) surface states at the same time. On the other hand, HOTI supports topologically protected hinge states. So, Bi1Te1 is a unique platform to study the electrical signature of topological SS of fundamentally different origins. Though there is report of magneto-transport measurements on large scale Bi1Te1thin film, the Bi1Te1 single crystal is not studied experimentally till date. Even doping effect in a dual TI Bi1Te1 is missing in literature. In this regard, we performed the perpendicular and parallel field magneto-transport measurement on the exfoliated microflake of Bi1Te1 and Sb-doped Bi1Te1 single crystals, grown by modified Bridgmann method. Our metallic sample shows the weak anti-localization behavior analyzed by multi-channel Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation. We observed the presence of a pair of decoupled topological surface states. Further, we extracted the dephasing index (β) from temperature (T)-dependence of phase coherence length (Lφ), following the power law equation (Lφ / ∝T−β). The thickness dependent value of p indicates the transition in dephasing mechanism from electron-electron to electron-phonon interaction with increase in thickness, indicating the enhancement in the strength of bulk-surface coupling.

British Journal of Dermatology 188, Supplement_4 (June 2023). http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/bjd/ljad113.179.

Abstract:
Abstract Iatrogenic Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a relatively frequent occurrence following solid-organ transplants (0–5%), in part due to prolonged immunosuppression. However, its occurrence after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is rare, with only 15 cases described in the literature. We report a case of KS presenting in the skin of a patient who had received a matched unrelated donor allogeneic HSCT for IgG kappa myeloma. A 55-year-old HIV-negative white man with myeloma underwent an allogeneic HSCT from a matched, unrelated donor following conditioning chemotherapy with fludarabine–melphalan and antithymocyte globulin. Post-transplant, he was maintained on ciclosporin as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. On day 14 post-transplant, he developed a widespread eczematous eruption that rapidly evolved into an erythroderma; a skin biopsy was consistent with acute GVHD. He was managed with superpotent topical steroids and a 5-day course of oral prednisolone. He began extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) on day 33 post-transplant, having failed to respond adequately to systemic steroids. He also completed four cycles of rituximab. Ciclosporin was stopped by day 130 post-transplant. He had completed 14 cycles of ECP by day 139 post-transplant, with resolution of cutaneous GVHD; however, he had developed a rapidly growing solitary dusky-red nodule on his right neck that was excised due to diagnostic uncertainty. Histology revealed a dermal haemorrhagic exophytic vascular tumour composed of lobules and sheets of epithelioid cells with an eosinophilic cytoplasm and pleomorphic nuclei. Immunoperoxidase staining was negative for S100, MNF-116 and AE1/AE3. The same cells were strongly and diffusely positive for the vascular markers CD31, CD34 and ERG. The lesional cells were positive for human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 confirming a diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma. He subsequently developed a second lesion on his left forearm, despite being off all immunosuppression. A repeat bone biopsy confirmed that he remains in morphological remission from his myeloma. Positron emission tomography–computed tomography has not identified extracutaneous disease. KS following HSCT is rare, but it can be fatal. Skin lesions are the dominant clinical presentation. HHV-8 has an important role in the pathogenesis, and transplant-related KS may occur secondary to reactivation of the virus as a result of significant immunosuppression following HSCT. However, it could also occur as primary infection or be transmitted with donor cells. The outcome of KS after HSCT is variable. A watch and wait strategy can be applied if immune recovery is expected. In our patient, it developed 5 months after HSCT; shortly after immunosuppression had been tapered, he remains well and will be closely monitored for further suspicious lesions.
