Abstract:
Alloy-type anodes are the most promising candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their impressive Na storage capacity and suitable voltage platform. However, the implementation of alloy-type anodes is significantly hindered by their huge volume expansion during the alloying/dealloying processes, which leads to their pulverization and detachment from current collectors for active materials and the unsatisfactory cycling performance. In this work, bimetallic Bi−Sb solid solutions in a porous carbon matrix are synthesized by a pyrolysis method as anode material for SIBs. Adjustable alloy composition, the introduction of porous carbon matrix, and nanosized bimetallic particles effectively suppress the volume change during cycling and accelerate the electrons/ions transport kinetics. The optimized Bi1Sb1@C electrode exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance with an ultralong cycle life (167.2 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 over 8000 cycles). In situ X-ray diffraction investigation is conducted to reveal the reversible and synchronous sodium storage pathway of the Bi1Sb1@C electrode: (Bi,Sb) Na(Bi,Sb) Na3(Bi,Sb). Furthermore, online electrochemical mass spectrometry unveils the evolution of gas products of the Bi1Sb1@C electrode during the cell operation.

Abstract:
We fabricated superlattice films composed of Bi2 bilayers (BLs) and Bi2Te3 quintuple layers (QLs) by annealing pure Bi2Te3 films. It was found that Te desorbs from the QL to form the BL with an activation energy of 2.7 eV. Eventually, two distinct stoichiometric phases were formed, Bi1Te1 (QL–BL–QL) and Bi4Te3 (QL–BL), as evidenced by scanning transmission emission microscopy measurements. The surface-state dispersion was measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and the topological nature of each sample is discussed. Our method offers a convenient and simple way to fabricate superlattice films with different topological properties.

Abstract:
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has so far infected 762 million people with over 6.9 million deaths worldwide. Broad-spectrum viral inhibitors that block the initial stages of infection by reducing virus binding and proliferation, thereby reducing disease severities, are still an unmet global medical need. We studied Bi121, which is a standardized polyphenolic-rich compound isolated from Pelargonium sidoides, against recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2S (mutations in the spike protein) of six different variants of SARS-CoV-2. Bi121 was effective at neutralizing all six rVSV-ΔG-SARS-CoV-2S variants. The antiviral activity of Bi121 was also assessed against SARS-CoV-2 variants (USA WA1/2020, Hongkong/VM20001061/2020, B.1.167.2 (Delta), and Omicron) in Vero cells and HEK-ACE2 cell lines using RT-qPCR and plaque assays. Bi121 showed significant antiviral activity against all the four SARS-CoV-2 variants tested, suggesting a broad-spectrum activity. Bi121 fractions generated using HPLC showed antiviral activity in three fractions out of eight against SARS-CoV-2. The dominant compound identified in all three fractions using LC/MS/MS analysis was Neoilludin B. In silico structural modeling studies with Neoilludin B showed that it has a novel RNA-intercalating activity toward RNA viruses. In silico findings and the antiviral activity of this compound against several SARS-CoV-2 variants support further evaluation as a potential treatment of COVID-19.

Abstract:

För Biologi Kurs A användes även lärarhandledning.

Abstract:
This paper describes the growth and photorefractive characteristics of a series of single crystals from solid solution Bi12Si1- x Ti x O20 of various compositions (x varies from 0.0 to 1.0) in 10-20 mm diameter and 20-40 mm long, that were successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The axial temperature gradient was kept higher than 50°C/cm and the growth rate was kept lower than 0.5 mm/h to prevent cellular growth and inclusions. X-ray phase analysis (XPA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) have been applied to study the phase diagram of the Bi12Si1- x Ti x O20 system. The XPA results indicated that all specimens consist of single phase with the sillenite structure and that the concentration dependence of the unit cell parameter was close to linear. The DTA results showed that the liguidus temperature of the samples decreased as the content of Bi12TiO20 increased. From the crystallization and above analysis we confirmed that the unstricted solid solution had occurred in the melts of Bi12Si1− x Ti x O20. The two wavemixing technique has been applied to characterize photorefractive properties of the crystals, including the photorefractive grating recording and erasing speeds and diffraction efficiency. The diffraction efficiency of a He–Ne probe beam from the grating developed by two argon laser beams was measured to be three times as high as that of pure Bi12SiO20.
