Abstract:
Thirteen betelvine cultivars (PB 001 to PB 013) collected from different locations of Bangladesh showed remarkable variations in disease reaction to foot and root rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. The lowest incubation period 8 days was required for the cultivars PB 005 (BARI line), PB 006 (Misti pan), PB 009 (BARI Pan-1) and PB 010 (Bangla pan) and the highest incubation period 22 days was required for the cultivars PB 001 (Laldingi pan) and PB 013 (Gayasur pan) for appearance of 1st disease symptoms. The disease incidence ranged 8.33 to 100% at 30 days after inoculation. The lowest disease incidence was recorded in PB 001 (Laldingi pan), while the highest disease incidence was recorded from PB 002, PB 003 (Chalitaguti pan), PB 004 (Sanchi pan), PB 005, PB 006 (Misti pan), PB 007, PB 008, PB 009 (BARI Pan-1), PB 010 (Bangla pan) and PB 012 (Bhabna pan) followed by PB 011 (Jhal pan) and PB 013 (Gayasur pan). Based on incidence of foot and root rot on those cultivars, PB 001 (Laldingi) was graded as resistant, PB 011 (Jhal pan) and PB 013 (Gayasur pan) as moderately susceptible and rest of the cultivars as susceptible. Abstract:
This paper takes as its starting point Homi Bhabha’s explanation of culture and diversity in his essay The Location of Culture (1994), in which he denotes cultural meaning as existing in a transitional space between clashing cultures and, associatively, between competing histories. The cultural space to which Bhabha refers offers a path to a reinvention of the hybrid self (and nation) beyond the more restrictive parameters of what Foucault has termed “the inscribed surface of events” (Foucault, “Nietzsche, Genealogy, History” 344) that the body represents. With reference to Bhabha’s delineation of spatial awareness and Foucault’s observations of power discourse and the body as a site of knowledge and discursion but also as an inhibiting site of colonisation, and in light of previous English-language Malaysian fiction, I will examine the ways in which Tan Twan Eng (1972-) investigates the conundrum of memory and historical inscription, and his textual approach to the vexed questions of self-determinism and postcolonial agency in his novels, The Gift of Rain (2007) and The Garden of the Evening Mists (2012).

Abstract:
The portrayal of creole identity is presented in several literary works, one of them is in the portrayal of Antoinette Cosway in Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea. Antoinette Cosway firstly is the minor character in Charlotte Bronts Jane Eyre. The research traces the link between Antoinette Cosways creole identity with her madness. According to Bhabhas ambivalence theory, creole identity possibly creates a new identity as the result of interrelation between colonizer and colonized. Based on the research, Antoinette Cosway failed to create a new identity and became a madwoman instead. The cause is the complex situation faced by her and the lack of supporting aspects for constructing a new identity. Keywords: creole identity, ambivalence, Antoinette Cosway, Homi Bhabha

Sunny, Yemuna. Redefining Sustainable Development: Co-Creation of Knowledge with the Bharia People. Indian Institute for Human Settlements, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.24943/tesf0706.2023.

Abstract:
This study examines the lived experiences of the Bharia people of Patalkot with regard to ecology, society, and the modern school. The research methodology, attempting to keep the agency of the Bharia at the centre, has helped to evolve knowledge that is at once embedded and questioning. At the interface of the tribal and the non-tribal existences, like the market and the modern school, there are undercurrents of exploitation, alienation and a sense of being undervalued. The thriving forests of Patalkot enhance socio-cultural and ecological relationships of tribal society and help rethink development in terms of ecological restoration and egalitarian relationships, both of which are in decline in the contemporary phase of capital through liberalisation, globalisation and privatisation.
