Abstract:
This dissertation looks at the way in which the shifting configurations of nation, gender and future in Micah might affect readers' positioning as subjects---that is their positioning as agents of speech and action---in a way that might engender resistance to oppression. It is suggested that if readers of Micah identify with the ambiguous and shifting national and gendered identities, within the context of the book's visions for the future, they are urged to recognize contradictions within their own subjectivity. This has the possible effect of shifting the reader's pre-formed subject position, or at least interrogating it, a process which may allow for resistance to oppression. The theoretical problematic for this approach originates within recent discussions of textual determinacy in biblical and literary criticism: "is it the text or the reader that controls meaning?" The work of theorist Homi K. Bhabha on the negotiation of cultural difference in colonial and post-colonial contexts is used to engage the position---common to much contemporary literary and cultural criticism---that the reader comes to the text already formed as a subject within ideology, and that this will necessarily affect or control the way she reads the text. Zizek's reading of Althusser through Lacan is taken as a starting point for an understanding of "subject formation" thus conceived. This position, which tends toward the fixity of the subject, can be seen as analogous to Bhabha's discussion of the role of "pedagogical objects and discourses" (cultural icons, stereotypes, formative events) within the construction of national identity. By way of contrast, Bhabha's key concepts---hybridity, third space, outside the sentence, liminal identification, time-lag, agency in indeterminacy; in short performative practice---envision an identification with difference in a way that allows for the subject to be repositioned and for meaning to be reinscribed. Abstract:
Toxicity of tyrosine metabolite has been hypothesiszed, but not proven, to play a role in the ethiopathogenesis of hepatic alterations found in hereditary tyrosinemia type1 (HT1), a metabolic disease caused by a deficiency of fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH). A deficiency of this enzyme results in liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and renal tubular dysfunction. Two of tyrosine intermediate metabolites (pHPPA) and succinyl acetone (SA) were tested on the rat primary hepatocytes. DNA damage, DNA repair capacity and DNA methylation status of the liver cells treated with these two metabolites were measured. Comet assay was used to measure the DNA damage and the repair capacity, DNA methylation was measured with the cytosine extension assay. Experiments showed that pHPPA had impairment on the DNA repair capability of treated cells and also increased the absolute % unmethylated Sample revealing the hypomethylation potency of this metabolite. SA caused damage but the treated cells were able to repair the damage inflicted on them, the results showed no significant effect on the global DNA methylation status of these SA treated cells.

Abstract:
A technique to calibrate the CsI(Tl) calorimeter of the Babar experiment was developed and implemented. The method allows a calculation of absolute calibration constants for all 6580 crystals. With these constants, a monitoring of the change of the light yield of the crystals is possible. The algorithm is based on the comparison of the measured energy and the expected deposited energy of particles in Bhabha scattering events. The measured energy is calculated from a cluster of hit crystals. The individual crystal energies are calibrated by a multiplication with a calibration constant c. The expected energy is extracted from a Monte-Carlo-Simulation. Minimizing a chi^2 term - which compares the expected and the measured cluster energies - with respect to the constants c yields a system of linear equations with a 6580x6580 matrix, that can be inverted numerically. The crystals are calibrated in an energy range of 2.5 to 8 GeV. The large rate of Bhabha scattering events at the PEP-II accelerator allows a calibration with a statistical precision of 0.32% within 12 hours of data taking at a luminosity of 3*10^33 events per square centimeter and second. The influence of systematic uncertainties was studied and estimated to be +0.81% -0.72%. Due to the calibration an energy resolution sigma_E / E of 1.8% could be obtained for electrons with an energy of 7.5 GeV. With the calibration constants a decrease in the lightyield of the endcap crystals of 2.8% could be observed between May and October 2000

"Fast Luminosity Monitoring Using Diamond Sensors for SuperKEKB." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016SACLS565/document.

Full text
Abstract:
SuperKEKB is a very high luminosity collider dedicated to the Belle II experiment, it consists of a Low Energy Ring (LER) of 4 GeV positrons and a High Energy Ring (HER) of 7 GeV electrons. The commissioning of this machine is split into three phases: phase 1 (single-beam phase) is dedicated to vacuum scrubbing, where beams circulate without focusing at the collision point. Phase 2, for which the major part of the Belle II detector will be installed, will enable the tuning of the final focus system to achieve a luminosity of 10³⁴ cm⁻² s⁻¹. During phase 3, Belle II physics runs will start with an aimed luminosity up to 8×10³⁵ cm⁻² s⁻¹. In this context, the aim of my thesis is to develop and install a fast luminosity monitoring system, which is required for online correction of beam instabilities and maintenance of optimal luminosity. To reach the aimed relative precision of 10⁻³ in 1 ms, the measurement will be based on the radiative Bhabha process at zero photon scattering angle, whose cross-section is large and well-known. These particles will be detected using diamond sensors, resistant to radiation and enabling very fast signal acquisition, to be placed outside of the beam-pipe and downstream of the interaction point. The first part of this work is dedicated to the investigation of the best locations for the diamond sensor positioning in both rings. Using detailed simulations, we studied the dynamics of Bhabha particles during their tracking in the rings and their interaction with the beam pipe material. This led to the identification of two positions, at 11.9 m in LER and at 30 m in HER, and to considering a new geometry for the vacuum pipe in the LER. The second part is related to the phase 1 of the SuperKEKB commissioning and concerns the measurements performed with the diamond sensors that were installed. Single beam loss processes (Bremsstrahlung, Touschek, beam-gas Coulomb scattering) were studied in detail with respect to the LER beam and ring parameters (current, pressure, transverse beam sizes). The results of this study were then compared to the data collected from February to June 2016. We found good qualitative and quantitative agreement between our simulations and measurements. From this we could estimate that the level of background to be expected during luminosity monitoring will be two orders of magnitude smaller than the rate of the radiative Bhabha scattering signal

Elmgren, Charlotta. "The Chronotope of Immigration in Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-61587.

Full text
Abstract:
Jeffrey Eugenides‟ Middlesex can be ascribed to many genres, one of which is the novel of immigration. Mikhail Bakhtin has suggested that each genre, indeed any literary motif, can be defined by its own chronotope, literally “time space,” “the intrinsic connectedness of temporal and spatial relationships that are artistically expressed in literature.” The essay discusses the chronotope of immigration in Middlesex, and looks at how four specific intersections of time and space, embodied by the four houses inhabited by the Stephanides family, contribute to the unfolding of this particular immigration saga. The four houses can thus be seen to represent the key elements of this novel‟s instance of a chronotope of immigration, which brings up concepts such as assimilation, hybridity and “third space.” The essay also examines the relations of central characters to time, space and each other; the upstairs/downstairs and inside/outside dichotomies within each house providing interesting keys to inter-gender and inter-generational alienation within this chronotope of immigration.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I explore the dynamics of how the definition of the human is established and subsequently challenged in both H.G. Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) and R.L. Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). Late nineteenth-century Europe was a time and place where an exploration of the definition of what it means to be human was particularly uncomfortable. The structures that upheld the then accepted conceptions of the human were under assault by new scientific discourses such as Darwinist theories of evolution, criminal anthropology and degenerationism. I show how the anxieties that these discourses inspired are reflected in the texts, and also examine how the communities in the texts act to reinforce the collapsing definition of what it means to be human. Victorian efforts to resolve this crisis of identity were mainly rooted in attempts to classify the natural world and to find or create some form of stable categorical distinction between the ‘human’ and the Other, or the not-human. The nature of the Other varied widely but manifested in terms of species, race, gender and class, to name but a few categories. The mechanisms through which humans, both as individuals and as communities, created and maintained their ‘humanity’ is examined through the use of theories of the liminal, from Anton van Gennep ([1909] 1960) to Homi Bhabha (1994). The reasons for the fear of the liminal characters are explored through Julia Kristeva’s (1982) notion of the abject – a phenomenon which arises in a confusion of the boundaries and distinctions between the subject and the object, the Self and the Other. Using Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s (1996) ‘Monster Theory’, I examine what the texts reveal about the society in which the authors were writing and what the appeal or horror of each monster’s particular type of liminality might have been for contemporary readers. In my conclusion I show that the fears and anxieties in Wells’s and Stevenson’s texts are still extant today. The monsters in the texts reflect changing conceptions of what it means to be human. By examining the nature of the fear that these monsters inspire, one can better understand both the readers of the time and the origins of the modern understanding of what it means to be human, what it means to be Other, and the realisation that, ultimately, perhaps we all exist somewhere betwixt and between.

Salisbury, Annika. "Martha's Unhomely Quest for the Homely : A Postcolonial Reading of the Protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing's Martha Quest." Abstract:
The protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing’s Martha Quest is born to white British settler parents and grows up in a British colony in southern Africa in the 1930s. Although officially the coloniser rather than the colonised, Martha tries to reject this role mentally, verbally, and physically. This essay aims to show that a postcolonial reading of Martha in relation to the colonial context helps in understanding her double consciousness and, more specifically, her inability to find a real or lasting sense of home. Using Homi Bhabha’s concept of unhomeliness, the essay argues that Martha does not truly feel at home anywhere, because the “unhomely” always disturbs the “homely.” Through close reading of the text, it shows how Martha tries to find a sense of home in four areas of her life: her physical home, nature, her body, and her mind. This essay finds that despite Martha’s efforts in moving from her family home to rented accommodation, from the bush to the city, from girlhood to womanhood, and from her individual thoughts to the solidarity of others, she still does not feel at home anywhere. Whenever she starts to feel comfortable in a place or situation, unhomely moments, such as reminders of her nationality, race, or class, always disturb the homely feelings of belonging. Ultimately, Martha cannot escape her unhomeliness.

This research looks for getting a better comprehension about a contemporary perception of the world through Fernando Fiorese’s poetry. He is a contemporary Brazilian poet from Pirapetinga, Minas Gerais. We intend i) to enlarge the possibilities of questions related to contemporary poetry performance in working out both individual identity (a priori) and colletive one (a posteriori); ii) to outline a contemporary perception of the world through this meeting poetry. We believe that the identity construction happens always in relation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Before and after the Iranian Revolution, the experience of restrictions and gender confinement drove many Iranian women writers to fight for their forbidden role. What many of them now call their first exile at home went on until the chance of migration, above all to Europe and to the Usa, changed the perils of writing under Iranian censorship into a free, but unbalanced condition aware of cultural dissociations. Those dissociations are not simply due to diasporic estrangement, but to a more confused doubling, which is rooted in a quest for the self that passes through hyphenation and in-betweenness. Moreover, if the veil often emerges as a narrative symbol of women’s oppression, it sometimes acquires the valency of a dramatic “fourth wall”. This thesis aims to overthrow that “invisible wall”, in order to show a relationship between dramatization and new writing by the women of the Iranian diaspora. In line with Brechtian epic drama based on the concept of estrangement, it will explore estrangement both as an existential condition and as the distance required to rewrite the self through new roles. More in detail, if the author lives between two worlds and tries to depict their dualisms, she also becomes the playwright of her past and present selves. The metaphors and dualisms will be examined through a comparison of some memoirs and novels by Iranian-American women writers – such as Azadeh Moaveni, Firoozeh Dumas, Nahid Rachlin, Porochista Khakpour and Azar Nafisi – coming from different generations and cultural heritages. Each narration will be analysed as a dramatic scene of memories and linguistic splits, which dramatize recurring senses of estrangement and turn them into a more “visible wall” of identities in transit.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study intends to investigate British artist Anish Kapoor’s stylistic formation in relationship to globalization, positing its history as a multiplicity, comprised of several competing localisms, including: minimalism; the traditions of modern painting; and the artist’s own personal diasporic narrative. It will demonstrate how Kapoor is a transgressive global artist, concerned not only with rethinking the longstanding question of artistic form, but also with the enduring process central to the cultural formation of subjects. Overall, this thesis will propose that Kapoor’s art in particular can be comprehended by the special liminal position it occupies between such polarities as modern and postmodern art, painting and sculpture, East and West, national and trans-national, and local and global. By transgressing the borders that demarcate these discourses, Kapoor’s art enters an in-between state; through both formal and thematic strategies, his sculptural forms orchestrate viewers so they are able to move beyond distinct, fixed, and stabile meanings and view the works as eminently open to the different perspectives and radically diverse discourses they engage, making them truly global works of art.

Abstract:
SuperKEKB is at the foremost frontier of high luminosity e⁺e⁻ colliders, dedicated to the Belle-II experiment. It aims to provide an instantaneous luminosity of 8x10³⁵ by involving extremely tiny beams colliding at the Interaction Point (IP) based on the "nano-beam scheme". Therefore, excellent control of its beam orbit at the IP is required to ensure the optimum geometrical overlap between the two colliding beams, and thereby maximize the luminosity. Besides, effective instrumentation to diagnose the behavior of the beam at the IP and possible beam interactions between bunches along the train are also quite essential during the long and rather difficult process of machine tuning towards the nominal beam parameters. This thesis presents the development and application of a fast luminosity monitoring system based on sCVD diamond detectors at SuperKEKB, including: (1),train integrated luminosity signals every 1 ms which will be used as input to the dithering orbit feedback system, its relative precision is expected to be better than 1% when luminosity reaches 10³⁴ (2), sensitive train integrated luminosity signals over a large luminosity dynamic range every 1 s which will be sent to the SuperKEKB control room as immediate observable for machine collision tuning, and (3) bunch integrated luminosity signals every 1 s with sufficient relative precision to monitor the collision performance for each single bunch. To achieve such high relative precision and cover a large luminosity dynamic range, the radiative Bhabha process events at vanishing scattering angle will be measured, whose interaction cross-section is quite large and reasonably well known. The sCVD diamond detectors, which have fast signal formation and good radiation tolerance, were used to detect the charged particles in the secondary showers induced by the interaction between the lost Bhabha scattered particles and the beam pipe and specific radiator materials at carefully chosen locations downstream of the IP in both the LER and HER. A start-to-end simulation was performed on the dithering orbit feedback system using fast, precise luminosity signal as input, which includes: sCVD diamond detector signal estimation based on laboratory measurements with a radioactive source, signal sequence construction at SuperKEKB including single beam backgrounds and Bhabha scattered particles, luminosity signal procession, dithering orbit feedback simulation. It enabled verifying the feasibility of this system to maintain very high luminosity in the presence of ground motion, in particular it determined the relative precision of the fast luminosity signal every 1 ms. Besides, the radiation damage of the sCVD diamond detectors in the LER was also estimated based on a FLUKA simulation and applying the NIEL hypothesis. During the Phase-2 and early Phase-3 commissioning periods of SuperKEKB, our fast luminosity monitor based on sCVD diamond detectors was installed and operated successfully. Single beam loss processes, mainly Bremsstrahlung and Touschek, were studied in detail and compared with the simulation, showing good agreement. During the collision commissioning, train and bunch integrated luminosity signals every 1 s were provided for machine tuning. e.g. the vertical beam sizes were determined with the vertical offset scan technique based on our luminosity signals, both the average and for the individual bunches, which is very important and useful for the collision and IP local optics tuning during the long and rather difficult process of SuperKEKB machine tuning towards the nominal beam parameters. Besides, a train integrated luminosity signal every 1 ms with the expected relative precision was also provided and used as input to the dithering orbit feedback system for its first successful tests with deliberately introduced horizontal beam-beam offsets. More tests on the dithering orbit feedback system are expected to ensure its future continuous operation

Abstract:
This study examines the role and implications of mimicry (Bhabha, 1994) and colonial trans-lation (Young, 2003) in Swedish adoption narratives. Through a deconstructive narrative analysis of three Swedish adoption texts: Längtansbarnen: Adoptivförädrar berättar [The Longed for/Longing Children: Adoptive parents tell their story] (Weigl, 1997), Adoption: Banden som gör oss till familj [Adoption: the ties that make us a family] (Juusela, 2010), and Gul Utanpå [Yellow on the Outside] (Lundberg, 2013); the study explores how mimicry manifests itself in adoption narratives, the process of the translation of the adoptee into a mimic Swede, and how the transnational/-racial adoptee as a mimic poses a threat, as mimicry turns to menace. The study finds that mimicry emerges as a process, where the adoptee is first desired as abody of difference that can become an almost the same Swede, a mimic Swede, while keeping an almost difference. A dual translation process takes place where the adoptee’s body is translated from a body of a difference that is total into a mimic Swede, while a version of Swedishness is translated onto the body. As a mimic, the adoptee communicates their (almost) sameness through an excessive, but limited version of Swedishness, while disavowing their difference. However, their difference is still visible, and continuously communicated through (mis)recognition by others. The adoptee’s mimicry is prone to turn into menace, where they pose a threat to the identity of the white Swede and meanings of white Swedishness.Key Words: Transnational/-racial Adoption; Mimicry; Colonial Translation; DeconstructiveNarrative Analysis; Sweden

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to provide a perspective on literature inculpating colonialism using postcolonial literary theory and method. The subject material incorporates four novels studied during the literature modules for the English course at Högskolan Gävle (HIG). The four novels combine to highlight various issues that affect the Self-identity through hybridization and colonial discourse as well as the detrimental nature of the colonial project for indigenous value systems during the period of colonialism. There is also application of theories and concepts raised in academic literature from within and outside the curriculum of HIG. The use of the postcolonial literary methodology provides a critical perspective of the aforementioned literature while implementing theories associated with that movement such as hybridity and the redefining of borders as well as focusing on the social, cultural, political and religious impact of the coloniser’s activities in the colonies as raised in the novels.  The most significant findings of this essay include the roles of isolation and disconnection within the colonial project and the subsequential effects on the colonised and their descendants. There are findings and observations of the level of strategic application of universalistic colonial discourse and the intrinsic application of the language used in the objectification of the indigenous and the subjugation of their value systems. The role of perception is also highlighted including findings on the social implications for the colonies inhabitants, both dissident and conformist, raised within the chosen literature and this essay. The essay also examines the application of various strands of literary theory incorporated within postcolonialism including poststructuralism and psychoanalytic criticism as well as anthropology material.  The conclusion of this essay culminates with the conflicting interpretations of progress as a universalism that counters the theories of postcolonialists and poststructuralists and their subsequent refusal to succumb to literature’s prevalence. The subjectivity of the postcolonial literary theorist and the self-imposed parameters restrict the interpretation of the colonial and postcolonial literature. The aforementioned progress defined by improved standards of health, education and social justice is lacking in presence in both the postcolonial literature and the accompanying literary theory counterpart. Subsequently, the disconnected voice of isolation and the split/double identity take precedence over higher standards of living and the appreciation of access to improved human rights and social justice within postcolonial society.

Tahsildar, Abir. "Cross-cultural marriage and hybrid identities of characters in three anglophone novels." Thesis, Tours, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013TOUR2015/document.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the subject of cross-cultural marriage and hybrid identities of characters in Nadine Gordimer’s The Pickup (2001), Leila Aboulela’s The Translator (1999), and Safi Abdi’s A Mighty Collision of two Worlds (2002). The study seeks to find out how the cultural identities of the protagonists in the novels change when they marry across cultures and face new traditions and beliefs. Hybridity theory, which is developed by Homi Bhabha and other hybridity theorists, can be a relevant tool for analysis of the characters’ identities. Bhabha contends that those who cross cultures live in an “in-between space” or “third space” in which they oscillate between their native culture and the host culture. However, results show that fictional characters present cases which have not been explored by hybridity theorists. In addition, it is stressed that various factors of a cultural, religious, personal, and social nature affect the protagonists in the novels to either develop a hybrid identity or maintain their native way of life. It is also found that cross-cultural marriage and hybridity are correlated. The former can be both a manifestation of hybridity, where the protagonists’ cross-cultural marriage is seen as an assertion of their hybrid experience, and as a means to hybridity. Contrary to expectations, it is observed that cross-cultural relationships lead to an anti-hybrid reaction

Abstract:
Multiculturalism is a current issue in our globalized society, which also the library field must relate to. In the Swedish Library Act from 2014 it is stressed that users with another linguistic background than Swedish shall be prioritized. However, an undifferentiated comprehension of what multicultural services at the library really means prevails, and the underlying values of the concept are rarely questioned. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to problematize the concept of multiculturalism in a library context, by the identification of ideological patterns in the research discourse. Nine Library- and Information Science research articles that discuss multiculturalism at the public library have been scrutinized, and we found that the articles are dominated by a palpable Western and colonial perspective. Four discourses were identified in the empirical material, which all can be linked to changes in the macro-sociological context. As a theoretical and methodological framework we have chosen Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (CDA) in combination with Homi K. Bhabha's postcolonial theory. CDA focuses on linguistic text analysis, in order to uncover how discourses both influence and are influenced by the social context, while Bhabha's theory questions how Western scholars create an illusion of fixed cultural identities. By combining these theories we wished to problematize the Western knowledge production, and initiate new approaches regarding how to work practically with these issues. Our conclusion is that there are similarities in how Western scholars depict multiculturalism and ethnicity at the library, which might impact the library practice in a negative way.

Abstract:
This essay explores and investigates post-colonial identity in Ireland in Hugo Hamilton’s The Speckled People: A Memoir of a Half-Irish Childhood (2003) and The Sailor in the Wardrobe (2006). Relying primarily on Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial criticism, which draws on some ideas from psychoanalysis, this essay argues that the autobiographies resonate well with the ideas of culture as a strategy of survival and of the post-colonial child as an analyst of Western modernity. Thus, three chosen concepts; ‘the Uncanny’, ‘Third Space’ and ‘Hybridity’ work together to reveal a recurring theme of split and duplicity in reference to the colonial past throughout. Furthermore they also reveal that the actual writing of the autobiographies in itself must be regarded as a way of responding to and negotiating that very same split and duplicity in reference to Ireland’s past.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis, situated in the context of francophone and maghrebian postcolonial studies, examines the impact of identity discourses on the protagonists’ subjectivity in Assia Djebar’s La Femme sans sépulture (2002) and La Disparition de la langue française (2003) and Nina Bouraoui’s Garçon manqué (2000) and Mes mauvaises pensées (2005). These novels draw a parallel between two historically connected spaces, France and Algeria, and periods,  the years of the Algerian war of independence and the rise of Islamists in 1990s  Algeria. The movement between the two spaces and periods constitutes in a literal and figurative sense a third space that contributes to the protagonist’s hybridisation. Hybridity is analysed as a narrative and discursive strategy that subverts and recodifies different identity discourses that transmit normative ideas about cultural, ethnic and gendered belonging. Hybridity is also shown in the literary genre. By connecting the past and the present through individual and collective reminiscence, the four novels reinterpret history while transgressing the frontiers of classical genres: the fictional, the testimonial and the autobiographical intertwine with the historiographical. Through the character of the narrator-cineaste and the story of Zoulikha, Assia Djebar reconstitutes in La Femme sans sépulture her own heritage and that of the interviewed women which is associated with Luce Irigaray’s theory of feminine genealogy as a model of identification. The languages’ different transcultural influences are shown in La Disparition de la langue française in the light of Homi Bhabha’s theory of cultural translation. Bouraoui’s fiction shows more radically than Djebar’s the body as a surface of cultural inscription, determined by ethnic and gendered norms. To emphasize the sociocultural dimension of the Bouraouian protagonist’s problems of identity the analysis uses Judith Butler’s theories about the performativity, the recognition and the melancholy of gender. In the four novels the return to one’s origins remains an illusion. The only place where the protagonists can negotiate and express their hybrid subjectivity is constituted in and through their writing.

Abstract:
This study investigates about the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act from an archaeological perspective (in the Foucauldian sense). Rather than accepting the Act and its formulations this study excavates the discursive elements that give meaning to the Act within the current socio-political sphere. In this sense this is a Foucauldian archaeology of patriotism in the United States of America illustrated and explicated through the current discourse created by the USA PATRIOT Act. Moreover, this research intends to illustrate how the patriotic discourse affects our current spatial practices. By analyzing the contemporary patriotic discourse through the lens of spatial theory what is sought is to briefly sketch the conceptual landscapes that are created through this discourse. This study applies the concepts and theories of Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, and Homi Bhabha as well as other postcolonial theorists to analyze the USA PATRIOT Act as a discourse that is linked and shaped by history and a discourse that is active in the design and content of our spaces.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation investigates the different forms of otherness and alterity (“Fremde”) in Bulgarian born German author, Ilija Trojanow’s novel, Der Weltensammler (2006). In this novel, alterity, as portrayed by Trojanow, is read as threatening and uncanny (“unheimlich”), on the one hand, and fascinating on the other. The novel, Der Weltensammler, translated by William Hobson and published under the title The Collector of Worlds (2008), narrates the life of the historical figure Sir Richard Francis Burton. Burton, a colonist, traveller and explorer, undertakes a journey across continents: British-India, Arabia and East Africa. As one of the first Europeans to do so, Burton - disguised and converted to Islam - undertakes a pilgrimage to Mecca. Like the title of the novel suggests, Burton is a contradictory man who not only collects worlds, but also obsessively adopts the cultures of the colonised. However, this British officer’s bizarre lifestyle and unusual ability to adapt to and adopt the foreign world raises certain questions regarding the relationship between coloniser and colonised. More importantly, he grapples with the portrayal of otherness. Throughout the novel both the narrator and a writer (the Lahiya) try to put together the pieces of Burton’s life. As the narrator warns in the preface of his novel, Burton remains an enigma. His antipodes are another historical figure, the former slave Sidi Mubarak Bombay and his servant Naukaram. Unlike in Burton’s and Stanley’s travel diaries where Bombay takes a marginalised position, he comes to the fore in Der Weltensammler. Though Burton appears to become part of the foreign world, it is the change of narrative perspectives between coloniser and colonised that puts their relation into question, thereby dissolving binary opposites. This thesis begins with a general discussion of the novel and its significance within German post-colonial literature. The study moves on to a discussion of the discourses surrounding the concept of alterity, identifying one key form of alterity, namely mimicry, a term borrowed from the theorist Homi K. Bhabha. The greater part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the novel. The first part deals with the analysis of alterity and otherness by focussing attention on the portrayal of otherness as threatening and fascinating, the concept of mimicry, and finally, Burton’s transformation. The second part investigates the process of re-writing that takes place and the manner in which alterity is portrayed in the novel paying particular attention to the relation between author, writer and narrator. Following this analysis of alterity and its rewriting, this thesis moves to the more general question of how Ilija Trojanow’s novel, Der Weltensammler, functions as a refutation (Gegenschrift/Kampfabsage) of Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order. Relying on the words of Stephen Slemon, this study finally questions whether this novel can be read as another “scramble for post-colonialism”. Based on the theoretical framework developed on the concept of culture by Homi K. Bhabha on the one hand and the insights on cultures by Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski on the other, this study demonstrates how it is through the processes of revision and re-writing of literary borrowings, e.g. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899), that the concept of alterity is redefined and the novel in itself gains a post-colonial voice. Furthermore, this thesis shows how otherness is deconstructed to such an extent that it is not difference that is highlighted, but instead a literary model for the co-existence of cultures.
Anders as in onder andere Burton en Stanley se reisbeskrywings waar Bombay slegs ‘n randverskynsel is, kry hy nuwe betekenis in Trojanow se roman.

Abstract:
By way of investigating critical practices, this work deploys an elaboration on the political potential of deconstruction aimed at a reading of literary texts committed to identity claims from the margins of hegemonic discourses. The deconstructive gesture, as proposed by French-Algerian thinker Jacques Derrida, challenges the stability of categories that ground these discourses, such as “essence”, “nature”, “origin”, and other metaphysical names which involve the idea of identity to itself, demonstrating, thus, that every structure is crossed by a constitutive lack. In suggesting a notion of identity as difference, this work examines general strategies of deconstruction and proposes an analysis of its appropriations by the theoreticcritical efforts of Indian authors Gayatri Spivak and Homi Bhabha in the reading of textual productions that articulate questions of gender and sexual difference, and of nation and cultural difference respectively.

Abstract:
This qualitative study of a migrant self-organisation in Bologna, Italy analyses the power relations between immigrants and supporters within the field of voluntary work in the migration sector. Based on eight semi-structured interviews it explores the perception of power relations of the members of the intercultural association Spazio per tutti. The material was analysed with the help of thematic analysis and a postcolonial and intersectional perspective. In the first part of the discussion, it is demonstrated, along the theory of “strange encounters” of Sara Ahmed (2000), how dominant norms, such as the invisible norm of whiteness, are still present in the association and immigrants are confronted with the paradigm of integration. The second part of the analysis shows instead, with the help of Homi Bhabha’s theory of the third space (1994), how the association creates a space where fixed identities and roles can be challenged and negotiated. By taking the intersectional approach into account, it gets further clear that the internal power relations are more complex for being grasped along binary categories (e.g. immigrants and non-immigrants), as they for example do not reflect the special subject position of Black women. In a nutshell, the present case study demonstrates the need to draw the attention to the political dimension of social work with immigrants and to create more awareness for intersectional justice, also within organisations that already follow an empowerment approach.

Abstract:
Through a close reading of Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions, this essay shows the key links between the novel and Frantz Fanon’s major works. In addition to providing a deeper understanding of Dangarembga’s narrative as a whole, it takes into particular consideration the embedded criticism of colonialism in the text. The psychological conditions implied by the title play a central role: the essay shows how these conditions relate to the colonial situation and how refusing to consent to subjugation can be understood as radical criticism of colonial, Christian, as well as patriarchal superstructures as well as forming clear opposition to the colonial institution. The analysis is primarily based on Fanon and his comprehension of other theorists. It also draws on the ideas of Homi K. Bhabha, which will provide an additional level of understanding regarding questions about colonial identities in general, and Dangarembga’s characters Tambu, Nyasha, and Babamukuru in particular.

Full text
Abstract:

The present dissertation is a translation and analysis of the chapter on anumāna in Vallabha’s Nyāyalīlāvatī, based on certain theoretical considerations on cross-cultural translation and the understanding of tradition. Adopting a non-essentialized and non-historicist conceptualization of the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika/Navya-nyāya tradition, the work focuses on a reading of the anumāna chapter that is particularized and individualized. It further argues for a plurality of interpretative stances within the academic field of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika/Navya-nyāya studies, on the grounds that the dominant stance has narrowed the scope of research. With reference to post-colonial theory, this dominant stance is understood in terms of a certain strategy called “mimetic translation”.

The study of the anumāna chapter consists of three main interpretational sections: translation, comments, and analysis. The translation and comments focus on understanding issues internal to the Nyāyalīlāvatī. The analysis focuses on a contextual interpretation insofar as the text is understood through reading other texts within the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika/Navya-nyāya discourse. The analysis is further grounded in a concept of intertextuality in that it identifies themes, examples, and arguments appearing in other texts within the discourse. The analysis also identifies and discusses Cārvāka and Mīmāṁsaka arguments within the anumāna chapter.

Two important themes are discerned in the interpretation of the anumāna chapter: first, a differentiation between the apprehension of vyāpti and the warranting of this relation so as to make the apprehension suitable for a process of knowledge; second, that the sequential arrangement of the subject matter of the sections within the chapter, vyāptigraha, upādhi, tarka, and parāmarśa, reflects the process of coming to inferential knowledge.

The present work is a contribution to the understanding of the post-Udayana and pre-Gaṅgeśa Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika/Navya-nyāya discourse on inferential knowledge and it is written in the hope of provoking more research on that particular period and discourse in the history of Indian philosophies.

In conducting this project, the motif of my paper is derived, which is to question male scholars’ gender-blindness under the feminist lens in the field of post-colonial studies. Issues, such as identity, hybridity and representation are under discussion; meanwhile by citing the example of and debate on sati, the gender issue and the special contributions of postcolonial feminism are developed.

Full text
Abstract:
Concluding on this note, the thesis argues that reading The Lord of the Rings in this way renders postcolonial concepts accessible to a whole generation of readers already familiar with the series, and points to the possibility of examining other contemporary texts, or even further analysis of Tolkien's to reveal more postcolonial sensitivities engendered in the texts.; This thesis examines J.R.R. Tolkien's texts The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King from a postcolonial literary perspective. By examining how these texts, written at the decline of the British Empire, engage with the theoretical polemics of imperialism, this thesis takes a new look at these popular and widely regarded books from a stance of serious academic interest. The first chapter examines how certain characters, who are Othered temporally in the realm of Middle-earth, manage to find a place of narrative centrality from the defamiliarized view of Merry, Pippin, Samwise, and Frodo, uncannily reoccurring throughout the narrative in increasingly disturbing manifestations. From there, the thesis moves on to uncanny places, examining in detail Mirkwood, Moria, Dunharrow, and the Shire at the end of The Return of the King. Each of these locations in Middle-earth helps Tolkien to explore the relationship between colonizer, colonized, and fetishism; the colonizer(s) disavow their own fears of these places by fetishizing the pathways they colonize for their safe passage. Since their paths are unsustainable colonially, these fetishes cannot fulfill their function, as the places are marked with unavoidable reminders of wildness and uncontrollability which cannot successfully be repressed for long. Ending this chapter with a discussion of the hobbit's return to the Shire, the argument moves into the next chapter that discusses the small-scale colonization that takes place in the heart of Frodo himself, making the Shire he used to know firmly unavailable to him. The Ring, in this case, is the colonizer, doubling, fracturing, and displacing Frodo's selfhood so that he becomes unfamiliar to himself. The uncanniness that this produces and Frodo's inability to heal from his experience with the Ring, this thesis argues, echoes the postcolonial themes of irreconcilability and the fantasy of origin.

Abstract:
Land use change for the purpose of development always comes with conflicts among different stakeholders, especially under the construction or expansion of developmental projects in developing countries. Thus, infrastructural projects like dams have both positive and negative consequences in this regard. The conflicts in such projects emerge with view of issues associated with the superposition of land expectation, as well as different stakeholders' interests. They appear in different forms, depending upon their intensity, with severe impacts on local people. The article deals with conflicts arising among different actors and their socioeconomic impacts on affected people, due to construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam project in Pakistan. This project started facing opposition from land acquisition and encouraged protestations, legal action in court, road blockage, threatening the project contractor, and violation. In order to analyze the conflicts and to assess the socioeconomic impacts of the project, we used both primary and secondary data sources. About 61 interviews with experts and stakeholders of different backgrounds were conducted. Moreover, under the secondary source about 289 articles from different national and regional dailies on conflicts and socioeconomics impacts of the Dam were studied in order to cross check the information. Further, some literature published by public and private organizations was also consulted.Preliminary results show different conflicts between affected people and Government and also among different groups of locally affected people, over land compensations and property rights. This study further highlights the socioeconomic issues of the project in the form of ineffective resettlement plan and loss of employment opportunities. It further, explores the root causes of conflicts, due to poor planning and governance, mismanagement, corruption and cronyism in different project activities. Lack of participation of all stakeholders and proper information dissemination about all project activities are also main source of conflicts among different actors. Finally, it provides policy measures and recommendations for better governance in the form of capacity building of local people in different areas and participation of all stakeholders in all project activities

Abstract:
The Mataṅgapārameśvaratantra is a major treatise of the dualist Saivism of Śaivasiddhānta. Its four sections deal successively with doctrine, ritual, yoga and observance. The 10th-century theologian Bhaṭṭa Rāmakaṇṭha wrote a voluminous commentary upon it, the Mataṅgavṛtti. Published some thirty years ago, its critical edition relies on incomplete manuscripts, and gives the text of the yoga section without any commentary. On the basis of a single manuscript preserved at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute containing the entire Mataṅgavṛtti, we have established the complete text of the yoga section with its commentary, translated into French this part of the tantra according to the commentator’s interpretation, and analysed its content. In the first part of the thesis, we describe the sources used for the edition of the text, and comment our task of critical edition. The second part provides a general account of the yoga in the context of Śaivasiddhānta, its relations to the three other sections of the tantra, and its attribution to the initiated devotee called sādhaka. We have analysed and summarized the elements relating to yoga in six other major tantra-s of Śaivasiddhānta. In the third part we analyse the content of the first three chapters of the yoga section which expound the specific features of tantra yoga in opposition to the yoga of the Yogasūtra, chiefly its six “limbs”. The fourth part presents the conquest of the principles of reality (tattva) through meditation leading to liberation, which is the topic of the fourth and fifth chapters. The fifth and last part deals with the extraordinary powers and the related breath and concentration techniques, described in the sixth and seventh chapters

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis ‘The Genesis of Jatio Sangsad Bhaban at Shere-Bangla-Nagar, Dhaka’ is an attempt to unravel the socio-political, cultural and spatial components of Jatio Sangsad Bhaban (JSB), the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh. Commissioned in 1962 by Pakistani military dictator Ayub Khan and designed by world renowned architect Louis I. Kahn. This building represents an epic saga that encompasses the rich and dramatic history of Bangladesh. Built as an element of the dictatorial apparatus by the West Pakistani government to placate the nationalist movement of East Pakistan, it symbolises the national identity of an independent nation, Bangladesh. Initiated in the early 1960s during the cold war period, the creation of the JSB is characterised by the political context of the time. With its dominating physical presence, surrounded by space in an overcrowded city, the building serves as a constant reminder of both the nationalist movement that led to the war of independence of Bangladesh and the global political order under which it was created. This thesis explores these themes to understand the JSB as a nationalist product. The two constructs of nationalism, political and cultural, are seen as the main defining features of the thesis — through these lenses the thesis explores the socio-political construction of space that revolves around the building. The theory of architectural critic Lawrence Vale, who incorporates the political and cultural context in his study of symbolic buildings, is used to inform the thesis. The thesis evolved from articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings publications. The articles aimed to shed light on the hidden and less known phenomenon of this iconic building and its place within architectural historiography. Unfolding the subjective meaning of this building, rather than simply describing its physical attributes, evokes a new understanding and knowledge that can be applied to other iconic and symbolic structures.

Burmistrov, Leonid. "A detector for charged particle identification in the forward region of SuperB." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2011. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00673482.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we present the conception, the performances studies and the first tests in the Cosmic Muon Telescope situated at SLAC of a new detector for the particle identification in the forward region of the SuperB detector. This detector is based on time-of-flight (TOF) technique. To identify the particles with momentum up to 3 GeV/c and flight base around two meters we need a TOF detector able to measure the time with a precision of about 30 ps. To achieve this goal we have conceived a device producing Cherenkov light in a fused silica (quartz) radiator, by a charged particle, which then detected with very fast photodetectors and dedicated ultrafast electronics. We call it, the DIRC-like TOF detector. For what concern the photodetectors, the HAMAMATSU SL-10 MCP-PMT has been characterized at LAL test bunch and the time resolution of about 37 ps has been measured. The new 16-channel USB WaveCatcher electronics developed by LAL (CNRS/IN2P3) and CEA/IRFU has shown to have a jitter of less than 10 ps. The geometry of the quartz detector has been then carefully studied with Geant4 simulation. Which shows that the best detector geometry allow to reach the time resolution of about 90 ps per photoelectron with at least 10 photoelectrons detected, giving in average the desired 30 ps total time resolution. We have constructed a prototype of such device, using the quartz bars available from the Babar experiment, and we have installed it, in the SLAC Cosmic Ray Telescope. A time resolution of about 70 ps per photoelectron was obtained, in agreement with simulation. This proof-of-principle has convinced the SuperB Collaboration to adopt such a device as the baseline for the SuperB particle identification detector in the forward region. The delicate point which is still opened is the resistance of this detector to the machine background. In this thesis we also present preliminary studies of different types of background and their effect on the performances of the DIRC-like TOF detector. Radiative Bhabha process is by far the dominant source of background. The rate of the background photoelectrons caused mainly by the gammas with energy around 1.4 MeV is estimated to be ~480 kHz/cm^2 which corresponds to 2 C/cm^2 of integrated anode charge in 5 years. The neutron flux thought the DIRC-like TOF front end electronics is ~10^11/cm^2/year. These preliminary results are reassuring.

Abstract:
This study examines the functions of objects in a selection of British colonial travel accounts about Africa. The works discussed were published between 1863 and 1908 and include travelogues by John Hanning Speke, Verney Lovett Cameron, Henry Morton Stanley, Mary Henrietta Kingsley, Ewart Scott Grogan, Mary Hall and Constance Larymore. The author argues that objects are deeply involved in the construction of pre-modern and modern spheres that the travelling subject moves between. The objects in the travel accounts are studied in relation to a contextual background of Victorian commodity and object culture, epitomised by the 1851 Great Exhibition and the birth of the modern anthropological museum. The four analysis chapters investigate the roles of objects in ethnographical and geographical writing, in ideological discussions about the transformative powers of colonial trade, and in narratives about the arrival of the book in the colonial periphery. As the analysis shows, however, objects tend not to behave as they are expected to do. Instead of marking temporal differences, descriptions of objects are typically unstable and riddled with contradictions and foreground the ambivalence that characterises colonial literature.
