Abstract:
This chapter examines the significance of music in radical white nationalist activism in the Nordic countries. The focus of the chapter is a change in how nationalists look at the relation between their ideological dogmas and music. For decades, the consensus was that the music had to be white, but in the 2000s young activists started to challenge this norm, introducing genres such as hip hop and reggae. The analysis looks beyond the literature’s conventional focus on how the music supports activism to instead examine racial constructions through music, arguing that the introduction of black genres involved a new conception of whiteness. The case studies include the rappers Zyklon Boom and Juice from Sweden, as well as a song by Nordic Youth.

Abstract:
Posthuman Rap leads to a posthuman vestibule, connected to and aware of neoliberal humanism but situated just outside of it, in a place where we might imagine other ways of being human. Big K.R.I.T.’s car, quaking with sub-bass blasting from his woofer, is exactly this kind of vestibule. K.R.I.T., working with AfroFuturist materials, uses it to create big bangs and new worlds beyond our own. But before he can call entire planets into being, he must first tune his vestibule to receive and transmit vibrations from beyond the edge of human perception. It’s from this vantage point, staring through the vibrating glass of his car, that he can imagine other ways of being human.

Abstract:
This book investigates the role that music has played in the development of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) cultural heritage from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century. Contrary to prevailing discourses of cultural loss and collapse, it argues that the continuity of Rapanui musical practices can be considered as evidence of cultural survival and continuity. The descriptions of music provided here extend beyond considerations of aesthetics, toward an appreciation of what it means for a once-endangered culture to survive, and to thrive, and the contribution that music can make to this process. It discusses how the Rapanui have carefully nurtured ancestral knowledge passed down over generations, as well as embracing a world of trans-Pacific cultural flows. It investigates five key domains of musical influence on Rapa Nui: ancient tradition, Christian music, Chilean influences, Polynesian influences, and influences derived from global popular culture.

Bensimon, David, Vincent Croquette, Jean-François Allemand, Xavier Michalet, and Terence Strick. Single-Molecule Studies of Nucleic Acids and Their Proteins. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198530923.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents a comprehensive overview of the foundations of single-molecule studies, based on manipulation of the molecules and observation of these with fluorescent probes. It first discusses the forces present at the single-molecule scale, the methods to manipulate them, and their pros and cons. It goes on to present an introduction to single-molecule fluorescent studies based on a quantum description of absorption and emission of radiation due to Einstein. Various considerations in the study of single molecules are introduced (including signal to noise, non-radiative decay, triplet states, etc.) and some novel super-resolution methods are sketched. The elastic and dynamic properties of polymers, their relation to experiments on DNA and RNA, and the structural transitions observed in those molecules upon stretching, twisting, and unzipping are presented. The use of these single-molecule approaches for the investigation of DNA–protein interactions is highlighted via the study of DNA and RNA polymerases, helicases, and topoisomerases. Beyond the confirmation of expected mechanisms (e.g., the relaxation of DNA torsion by topoisomerases in quantized steps) and the discovery of unexpected ones (e.g., strand-switching by helicases, DNA scrunching by RNA polymerases, and chiral discrimination by bacterial topoII), these approaches have also fostered novel (third generation) sequencing technologies.

Dörner, Thomas, and Peter E. Lipsky. Cellular side of acquired immunity (B cells). Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642489.003.0050.

Full text
Abstract:
B cells have gained interest in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) beyond being the precursors of antibody-producing plasma cells since they are also a broader component of the adaptive immune system. They are capable of functioning as antigen-presenting cells for T-cell activation and can produce an array of cytokines. Disturbances of peripheral B-cell homeostasis together with the formation of ectopic lymphoid neogenesis within the inflamed synovium appears to be a characteristic of patients with RA. Enhanced generation of memory B cells and autoreactive plasma cells producing IgM-RF and ACPA-IgG antibodies together with formation of immune complexes contribute to the maintenance of RA, whereas treatment with B-cell-directed anti-CD20 therapy provides clinical benefit.

Abstract:
‘Viruses’ explains that millions of people die from interacting with viruses every year, but beyond the effects of viruses on human health, the lives of all organisms and the cycling of nutrients through the biosphere depend upon the activities of viruses. Viruses control populations of bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes and this destructive power liberates massive quantities of nutrients in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Viruses are organized into seven groups based upon the type of genome and its mechanism of replication. Viral genomes are encoded in single-stranded and double-stranded DNA and RNA molecules. The expression of viral genes occurs within infected cells utilizing the molecular machinery of the host.

Johnston, Nessa. Sounding Decay in the Digital Age. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190469894.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Bill Morrison’s Decasia (2012) and Peter Delpeut’s Lyrical Nitrate (1991) are collage works made up of decayed silent-era film fragments. The films approach sound in contrasting ways: Lyrical Nitrate uses old 78 rpm recordings of operatic music as musical accompaniment to its decayed images, whereas Decasia uses a specially commissioned score and exists not only in DVD format but also as an elaborately staged performance piece. This chapter is an investigation of the role of the soundtrack within both films’ repurposing strategy, comparing and contrasting their sonic approaches, using a Chion-esque idea of “audio-vision” in an effort to understand their aesthetic workings. Despite the material heterogeneity of film sound and film image, the spectator takes in the experience as a synthesis. Yet beyond representational strategies the materiality of sounds and images in the pre- and postdigital ages is arguably the subject of exploration unifying this comparative analysis.
