Abstract:

Better Health is an organization focused on improving patient care and healthcare outcomes through health care quality improvement methods to provide better services at lower cost. With the average cost of a surgical site infection(SSI) estimated at around $34,400 and the average of 1 in 25 patients in a US acute care hospital having a healthcare-associated infection (HAI), improving patient safety and reducing costs are paramount. This business plan will detail reasons for the need for these services, and will do this by working alongside departments in hospitals to help them reduce their rates of HAI’s and improve their care processes through retraining and education. With improvements such as these, hospitals can not only reduce their costs and increase their profits, but also play a part in reducing the financial burden the American healthcare system is currently under.

Abstract:
My thesis project, Better Alone focuses on single person households from a perspective of loneliness. The objective has been to find an architectural solution to decrease experienced loneliness. In this project I intend to address the issue and design a way of living that can relieve the experience of involuntary loneliness. I have used two main strategies: the first is to provide space for social interaction in connection to the home and to create reasons to enter and linger in these spaces. The second main strategy is to blur or stretch the border that separates the home into privacy through visibility. The project's site is  in southern Stockholm, in between the neighborhoods Hammarbyhöjden and Hammarby sjöstad, a fairly central location. The site's most prominent characteristic is the fact that it is a steep slope. At the bottom of the slope runs Hammarbyvägen, which is a fairly busy road. Together these two aspects create a barrier between the neighborhoods of Hammarby sjöstad and Hammarbyhöjden, these are challenges that I have addressed in the project.

Ginsberg, Alexandra Daisy. "Better : navigating imaginaries in design and synthetic biology to question 'better'." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2018. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/3231/.

Full text
Abstract:
Designers, engineers, marketers, politicians, and scientists all craft motivating visions of better futures. In some of these, “better” will be delivered by science and technology; in others, the consumption of designed things will better us or the world. “Better” has become a contemporary version of progress, shed of some of its philosophical baggage. But better is not a universal good or a verified measure: it is imbued with politics and values. And better will not be delivered equally, if at all. “What is better?”, “Whose better?”, and “Who decides?” are questions with great implications for the way we live and hope to live. At a time when social, economic, and environmental conditions place in question the dominant paradigms of better defined by globalisation and technology, Better, a PhD by project, investigates some of the powerful dreams triggered by a banal word and develops critical design techniques to find new ways to ask better questions. This thesis contends that the “dream of better” is so influential in advanced technological societies that it is what science and technology studies scholars term a sociotechnical imaginary. The imaginary is used as a critical design tool to examine better, revealing links between design and the emerging technoscience of synthetic biology and other ideological spaces, like Silicon Valley. As a young field, synthetic biology offers a space to test and expand critical design’s potential. The practical research includes six critical design projects that engage with synthetic biology and its vision-making processes, using techniques from designed fictions to curation. The written thesis comprises six chapters informed throughout by commentary on the practice. The first chapter looks at the influence of dominant concepts of better on design, separating design’s intrinsic optimism from engineering and market-led ideas of the optimum and optimisation. It situates critical design practice as an optimistic activity, seeking alternative meanings of better. The next three chapters track how the imaginary of better has shaped synthetic biology and the field’s evolving culture of design. Meanings of better have proliferated since 1999, as synthetic biology’s visionaries promise to better biology, better the world, and even to better nature itself. But resistance has revealed the existence of alternative betters. Chapter Five explores critical design’s examination of synthetic biology’s dreams of betters. Recognising the mutual colonisation of critical design and synthetic biology, which is contributing to the emerging platform of biodesign, the chapter discusses how navigating imaginaries can improve future critical practice. It encourages framing technoscience within society, rather than placing society downstream of it. Chapter Six proposes that the social imaginary itself can be a critical design object. Designing “critical imaginaries” can open up our understanding of better, offering a process to reimagine the world. The critical imaginary is not a utopian effort to produce prescriptive visions of how the world ought to be. It is a heterotopian design technique to include diverse views and generate worlds that could be made, asking “what ought the world to be?”

Abstract:
The requirements on vehicle industry are constantly getting stricter, especially when it comes to emissions. At the same time cars, trucks and buses are needed for our way of living. This have forced companies to be as ecient as possible in their way of using fossil fuels for travelling and transport. To increase the eciency companies investigate all possible fuel savings to decrease their carbon footprint as much as possible. One area of savings that is not that obvious to many people is the alternator. Several percent of the total energy used by a vehicle are needed to operate the alternator. With a typical alternator eciency of 70% considerable savings can be achieved. This thesis that concern alternator eciency was carried out at Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. The goal of the thesis is to construct a mathematical model of an alternator. The model is supposed to consider all losses in the alternator and together with the output power give an eciency model of the alternator at different speeds and loads. A great part of the project has been dealing with the magnetic losses. The magnetic losses have been modeled as an equivalent circuit with the load angle as a central piece. The equivalent circuit is built up by the fact that the alternator used in the vehicles is a salient pole alternator. The equivalent circuit describes a voltage equation where the voltage drop over the magnetic inductance is described. From that relations between the signals in the alternator and output signals can be written. The alternator model is then used together with data recorded from different buses all over the world, this to be able to investigate how the alternator contributes to the fuel consump- tion depending on the way that the buses are driven. The result of this thesis is a mathematical model that describes the losses in the alternator for different load cases and speeds.

Rogge, Ebbe. "Better banking for Britain." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2016. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/23791/.

Full text
Abstract:
The global financial crisis had devastating effects on the financial system, economic growth and national debt of Western countries. The focus of this thesis is an examination of certain identifiable weaknesses in the corporate governance at UK banks which, it is posited, constituted an underlying cause of the crisis. It then considers the main regulatory responses to these identified weaknesses and assesses to what extent these have led to improvements in corporate governance at banks. This research is based on an examination of all the major failures at UK banks during and after the crisis, and of its related responses. In addition to UK responses, several solutions to the weaknesses identified at UK banks are also currently addressed through EU legislation and by the international Basel Committee. These are also reviewed. The principal conclusions are that: board effectiveness was low due to a lack of knowledge and of challenging of senior management; there was a culture placing growth and profit over risk management; and remuneration was inappropriately structured leading to unacceptable risk taking and scandals. It is further concluded that the mechanisms to limit the impact of a failure of a bank on its stakeholders, such as depositors and the taxpayer, were inadequate. A comparative case study of the financial crisis in Japan during the 1990s is also undertaken to consider whether, and to what extent, the Japanese regulatory response offers lessons to UK regulators and legislators. The principal finding is that comparative analysis of regulation and corporate governance at banks is problematic. Although there were similarities between the two financial crises and their impacts, the organisation and culture of the UK and Japanese banks is so different that different regulatory responses follow. Despite similarities in financial crises, different regulatory responses are more likely due to distinctive national contexts.

Thesis, University of Manchester, 2013. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/better-farming-better-business-better-living-the-irish-cooperative-movement-and-the-construction-of-the-irish-nationstate-18941932(70653419-16ee-4627-a3ba-8c7c6f9908e1).html.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that agricultural co-operative societies under the leadership of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society played a crucial role in building the Irish state and defining a national identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By questioning widely held assumptions about a formative period in Ireland’s political and economic development, it is argued that critical ideas about the Irish nation emanated from the sphere of economics. In particular, the efforts of co-operative activists are understood as important actors in the process of building the Irish nation-state through their interventions to reorganise rural society. The co-operative movement’s attempts to organise the resources and population of the Irish countryside represented a serious modernising effort that shaped the character of the politically autonomous nation-state that emerged in the 1920s. The establishment of co-operative societies introduced new agricultural technologies to rural districts and placed local farmers in control of agricultural business. Although co-operators met with frequent frustration in their objective to restructure Irish society along co-operative lines, the study of the movement remains central to a thorough understanding of social and political conditions in the period under review. Co-operative ideas became incredibly influential amongst Irish nationalists associated with Sinn Féin. It is argued that the co-operative movement’s modernising project became embedded in the Irish countryside and enmeshed in a political economy of revolutionary nationalism. As a consequence, the co-operative movement exerted a significant influence upon those who seized governmental power after the Irish revolution, which extended beyond independence. The thesis utilises a range of local and national sources which include records for individual co-operative societies, reports and publications associated with the national movement, as well as a wide variety of contemporary literature and journalism. By applying a local approach that feeds into an analysis of the co-operative movement on a national level, the thesis presents a detailed analysis of how co-operative activists and ideas influenced the creation of Ireland’s political culture. Crucially, the work of interstitial actors is reinserted into the process of the Irish state’s development. The building of state institutions is viewed through the work of a network of co-operative experts and therefore as something that occurred outside the deliberations of official circuits of power. The thesis breaks new ground in the historiography of the development of the Irish state by analysing the important work of those involved in shaping rural social relations and institutions such as co-operative organisers, engineers, propagandists, managers and secretaries.

Nguyen, Dung Viet. "Improving the Error Floor Performance of LDCP Codes with Better Codes and Better Decoders." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/255172.

Full text
Abstract:
Error correcting codes are used in virtually all communication systems to ensure reliable transmission of information. In 1948, Shannon established an upper-bound on the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted reliably over a noisy channel. Reliably transmitting information with a rate close to this theoretical limit, known as the channel capacity, has been the goal of channel coding scientists for the last five decades. The rediscovery of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in the 1990s added much-renewed excitement in the coding community. LDPC codes are interesting because they can approach channel capacity under sub-optimum decoding algorithms whose complexity is linear in the code length. Unsurprisingly, LDPC codes quickly attained their popularity in practical applications such as magnetic storage, wireless and optical communications. One, if not the most, important and challenging problem in LDPC code research is the study and analysis of the error floor phenomenon. This phenomenon is described as an abrupt degradation in the frame error rate performance of LDPC codes in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. Error floor is harmful because its presence prevents the LDPC decoder from reaching very low probability of decoding failure, an important requirement for many applications. Not long after the rediscovery of LDPC codes, scientists established that error floor is caused by certain harmful structures, most commonly known as trapping sets, in the Tanner representation of a code. Since then, the study of error floor mostly consists of three major problems: 1) estimating error floor; 2) constructing LDPC codes with low error floor and 3) designing decoders that are less susceptible to error floor. Although some parts of this dissertation can be used as important elements in error floor estimation, our main contributions are a novel method for constructing LDPC codes with low error floor and a novel class of low complexity decoding algorithms that can collectively alleviate error floor. These contributions are summarized as follows. A method to construct LDPC codes with low error floors on the binary symmetric channel is presented. Codes are constructed so that their Tanner graphs are free of certain small trapping sets. These trapping sets are selected from the Trapping Set Ontology for the Gallager A/B decoder. They are selected based on their relative harmfulness for a given decoding algorithm. We evaluate the relative harmfulness of different trapping sets for the sum-product algorithm by using the topological relations among them and by analyzing the decoding failures on one trapping set in the presence or absence of other trapping sets. We apply this method to construct structured LDPC codes. To facilitate the discussion, we give a new description of structured LDPC codes whose parity-check matrices are arrays of permutation matrices. This description uses Latin squares to define a set of permutation matrices that have disjoint support and to derive a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the Tanner graph of a code to be free of four-cycles. A new class of bit flipping algorithms for LDPC codes over the binary symmetric channel is proposed. Compared to the regular (parallel or serial) bit flipping algorithms, the proposed algorithms employ one additional bit at a variable node to represent its "strength." The introduction of this additional bit allows an increase in the guaranteed error correction capability. An additional bit is also employed at a check node to capture information which is beneficial to decoding. A framework for failure analysis and selection of two-bit bit flipping algorithms is provided. The main component of this framework is the (re)definition of trapping sets, which are the most "compact" Tanner graphs that cause decoding failures of an algorithm. A recursive procedure to enumerate trapping sets is described. This procedure is the basis for selecting a collection of algorithms that work well together. It is demonstrated that decoders which employ a properly selected group of the proposed algorithms operating in parallel can offer high speed and low error floor decoding.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing market of smartphone and tablet devices has made touch screens a big part of how people interact with technology today. The standard virtual keyboard used on these devices is based on the computer keyboard – a design that may not be very well suited for touch screens. This thesis seeks to answer whether there are alternative ways to design virtual touch keyboards. An alternative design may require training to use, but the user should be able to use it viably after a reasonable amount of practice. Optimally, the user should also have the potential to reach a higher level of efficiency than what is possible on the standard touch keyboard design. Analysis is done by researching current and previous attempts at alternative keyboard designs, and by implementing an own prototype based on observations made on the researched designs. The thesis concludes that there is an interest in solving issues encountered in this area, and that there is good potential in building viable virtual keyboards using alternative design paradigms.

Abstract:
This document is a project document based on finding a more economical way to use buttermilk at Synlait Milk Ltd. Buttermilk is a by-product from the Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF), which is the concentration of cream. It is a problem for many dairy companies in New Zealand, including Synlait. the problems arise due to the opportunity cost of using it. It is a low value product, but made in substantial quantities at a ratio of 55% buttermilk to 45% AMF. This feasibility study contains an analysis on buttermilk at Synlait, including opportunity costs and benefits with processing buttermilk into buttermilk powder. It provides insight into the feasibility of implementing a ‘washed cream’ process at Synlait which would provide an alternative method for using buttermilk. The feasibility of separating buttermilk components for separate use is also examined. Overall, this project provides a more economical solution for buttermilk use at Synlait Milk Ltd.

The Simply Straight Hair Brush was designed and built. The aim of the Simply Straight Hair Brush was to straighten hair faster and better than any product currently on the market. The current products were studied and the idea for a hair brush with heated bristles was developed. A product and patent search revealed that no idea similar to this existed. An experiment was performed to determine the relationship between tension, heat, and straightness. A design was formulated. Several heat transfer analyses were performed on this design. A prototype was built and tested for safety. The brush was then tested on several subjects resulting in significantly straighter hair. However, there was still room for improvement. The second iteration should have an optimized bristle configuration. It should also use a plastic with a higher maximum operating temperature so that the brush can be hotter. A third improvement would be putting in a temperature switch instead of relying on equilibrium for temperature control.

Full text
Abstract:
A deficiency of care coordination and delayed discharge planning has contributed to increased lengths of stay for telemetry patients and has pressed staff to discharge patients expeditiously, potentially leading to increased 30-day readmissions. Rushing the discharge process on the day of discharge has resulted in breakdowns in communication and lack of collaboration amongst the health care team of this study, contributing to extended lengths of stay, increased readmissions, and low Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAPHS) scores. This project highlighted a patient-centered care coordination team approach with 2 clinical registered nurses and a social worker who coordinated the discharge plan with the patients on admission. Discharge planning on admission and daily briefings involving care coordination and bedside staff reduced the length of stay, improved HCAPHS scores, and reduced 30-day readmissions by fostering better communication and collaboration. A 1-group pretest and posttest were utilized to compare data before care coordination and after care coordination. These findings yielded a length of stay reduction of 2.04 days, a 50% reduction in 30-day readmissions, and HCAPHS communication composite scores above the 50th percentile. The care coordination team exposed various programs and community resources that assisted with medications and durable medical equipment and suggested that companionship alleviated potential anxiety post discharge for those financially and socially burdened. The implications of a patient-centered team-based approach to discharge planning on admission eliminated barriers to discharge, improved patient knowledge of disease management, and provided a positive hospital experience.

Zhang, Yunpeng. "Better city, better life? : the 'fate' of the displacees from the Shanghai World Expo 2010." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16158.

Full text
Abstract:
With the ascendency of neoliberal ideology, mega-events have been increasingly used by ruling elites as part of a narrative of competitive progress in order to attract investment capital. Unfortunately, the dark side of mega-events has not received enough attention in existing literature, especially the critically important question of displacement and forced eviction because of such events. This thesis contributes to the literature by debunking the myths of mega-events and examining the domicide effects through an in-depth case study of the Shanghai World Expo. Theoretically, the thesis develops the notion of domicide by incorporating the literature on domination and subordination. It attempts to negotiate the tension between the subjective experience of victimhood and the objective process of victimisation in domcide. In analysing the domicide experiences, this thesis proposes to look into both the temporalities and spatialities of domicide, and to examine the variegated ways the displaced appropriate them. It questions how the morally, legally and politically problematic act of domicide is committed without effective forms of resistance. Empirically, this thesis offers a post hoc impact assessment of the ‘best ever’ World Expo and voices the suppressed outcries from those on the receiving end. It supplies a detailed account of the social production of domicide with a case from the Global South, and in doing so; it explores ‘actually existing neoliberalism’ in the Chinese context, expanding the geographical horizon in existing literature and enhancing our understanding of the articulation of neoliberalism in different localities. Although contextualised through the lens of mega-events, the conditions, mechanisms, process and tactics that provide the fertile soil for domicide as identified in this thesis can teach us a great deal about urban spatial practices elsewhere. The thesis draws upon the data collected through site-intensive ethnographic fieldwork, mixing the use of interviews, (non-)participatory observation, survey, unorthodox focus groups and media content. It argues that the exceptionality of the World Expo revokes political, moral and legal boundaries in causing pain to affected citizens in order to facilitate the accumulation of capital. Such exceptionality is constructed through various normative discourses. Those discourses and values naturalise and legitimatise the process of domicide, produce symbolic violence, and undermine the solidarity of the powerlessness. The submission of the displaced to the dominant power enables the production and reproduction of a repressive social and spatial structure. These are vitally important questions given the international focus on China’s economic growth and urbanisation.

NPD affected the brand image perception in the telecommunication industry to a high degree by improving the perception of the quality of products, and   in the chemical industry to a low degree by motivating the companies to recommend their suppliers. The interaction of CSR and NPD had an effect on the brand image by creating reputation and competitive advantage. Companies that were seen as environmentally responsible were often also seen as technologically advanced. Being perceived as sustainable was very important to the chemical   companies, whereas being perceived as innovative was vital in the telecommunication industry. CSR affected the brand image perception in the chemical industry by enhancing customer satisfaction and reputation, but in the telecommunication industry the CSR of suppliers was important only when the demand for sustainability came from the customers’ own customers

Silva-Maceda, Gabriela. "Are better communicators better readers? : an exploration of the connections between narrative language and reading comprehension." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/311437.

Full text
Abstract:
The association between receptive language skills and reading comprehension has been established in the research literature. Even when the importance of receptive skills for reading comprehension has been strongly supported, in practice lower levels of skills tend to go unnoticed in typically developing children. A potentially more visible modality of language, expressive skills using speech samples, has been rarely examined despite the longitudinal links between speech and later reading development, and the connections between language and reading impairments. Even fewer reading studies have examined expressive skills using a subgroup of speech samples – narrative samples – which are closer to the kind of language practitioners can observe in their classrooms, and are also a rich source of linguistic and discourse-level data in school-aged children. This thesis presents a study examining the relationship between expressive language skills in narrative samples and reading comprehension after the first two years of formal reading instruction, with considerable attention given to methodological and developmental issues. In order to address the main methodological issues surrounding the identification of the optimal linguistic indices in terms of reliability and the existence of developmental patterns, two studies of language development in oral narratives were carried out. The first of the narrative language studies drew data from an existing corpus, while the other analysed primary data, collected specifically for this purpose. Having identified the optimal narrative indices in two different samples, the main study examined the relationships between these expressive narrative measures along with receptive standardised measures, and reading comprehension in a monolingual sample of eighty 7- and 8-year-old children attending Year 3 in the UK. Both receptive and expressive oral language skills were assessed at three different levels: vocabulary, grammar and discourse. Regression analyses indicated that, when considering expressive narrative variables on their own, expressive grammar and vocabulary, in that order, contributed to explain over a fifth of reading comprehension variance in typically developing children. When controlling for receptive language however, expressive skills were not able to account for significant unique variance in the outcome measure. Nonetheless, mediation analyses revealed that receptive vocabulary and grammar played a mediating role in the relationship between expressive skills from narratives and reading comprehension. Results and further research directions are discussed in the context of this study’s methodological considerations.

Abstract:

In the beginning of the twenty-first century it became clear what consequences companies’pursuit of economical growth had created on our environment and our social lives. Now theworld is standing in front of a challenge and that is to find a sustainable way to produce, consume and live in order to help our environment and social lives. An example of anorganization that is working towards a sustainable way of living is Fair trade LabelingOrganizations International. They set up international fair trade standards in order to supportthe sustainable development of small producers in poor countries, such as ensuring that theproducers receive prices that cover their costs.Research results indicate that the fair trade label could lower the value of the brand that it isattached to, as well as decrease the original brand’s customer loyalty. While there is also thebelief that fair trade is a positive thing for a brand. Therefore our aim with this dissertation isto look at how the consumer behavior changes when the product is co branded with the fairtrade label. We will therefore look at how co branding with the fair trade label affect differentaspects of consumer behavior. The different aspects that we have used are need recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, post purchase behavior and perceived brandpersonality. The study is performed on Dutch consumers by doing a quantitative research. The studyshowed that there are four variables that affect consumer behavior when co branding with fairtrade these are price sensitivity, reason for buying, expected quality and perceived brandpersonality. This study contributes to the lack of research concerning the connection between co brandingwith fair trade and consumer behavior. The conclusions drawn from this study could be usedas guidelines for company managers that are thinking of adding a fair trade label to theproduct, but it could also be used as guidelines for managers that already use fair trade.

Abstract:
This thesis has focused on color reproduction processes in the graphics field and is based on theoretical research and practical studies. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how new tools and tools adapted to a specific production set-up can be used to raise awareness regarding the quality and workflow of images and image processing for sheet-fed offset within the graphic industry. The work is divided in to the following three study areas with several sub-studies: 1) The first research goal of the thesis is to identify knowledge levels regarding color separation of images and demand specifications within printing houses. 2) The second research goal is to investigate whether novel tools and new terminology can help to increase the knowledge level regarding color management 3) The third goal is to investigate whether process specific adaptation of key color control tools can improve quality levels Three surveys about color reproduction (focusing on level of knowledge concerning color separation, the use of ICC-profiles and demand specifications for controlled color reproduction) at printing companies in Sweden were made between 2000 and 2004. The surveys indicated a serious problem in the graphic arts industry, involving both an insufficient understanding of color management and a lack of communication. An important part of the work was to assist in make color management understandable for users and thereby optimize printing. For this purpose, digital test forms have been developed. The developed tools, together with descriptive material, will facilitate the understanding of color management issues. Definitions within the field of color separations have been examined, and changes have been suggested. A new term for separation “Compensation by Black”, CB, has been suggested, instead of e.g. GCR and UCR. Is it possible to adapt the different parts of the process chain in order to achieve an improved production? Yes! This work has developed the method for adaptation of the scanne rtest chart, the printing test chart for image categorization and the control strip forsheet-fed offset using gray balance. This thesis suggests that it is possible to produce a custom-made IT8 target test chart for scanners and achieve a result at least similar to or even better than the standard test charts on the market. This work has also shown that itis possible to adapt the test chart for printing to image category. The result showed that low-key image separated by the image-adapted test chart showed more detail in the dark areas than a low-key image separated by the standard test chart, in the prints on a coated paper. The result from the adaptation of a control strip for sheet-fed offset showed that gray balance can be used as a control parameter for quality control in sheet-fed offset.

Abstract:
The Ambleside waterfront, District of West Vancouver, has the potential to act as the armature for a water-borne transit link from this established neighbourhood to the Central Business District (C.B.D.) of Vancouver. By in-filling the under-used spaces and redeveloping several existing sites, the optimum employment of this historically ferry serviced waterfront may once again come to the fore. As every transit trip begins with a pedestrian event, a key component of this project is re-establishing and enhancing the pedestrian connections through the commercial/ residential centre and along the linear shore park. Using, and studying how, the principles of Transit Oriented Development (T.O.D.) fit in the Ambleside context is also central to this project. In the design careful attention will be made to the comfort and safety of the pedestrian realm by resolving conflicts between a transportation system and the retaining of the special character of Ambleside. The transit facilities will be appropriate to the site and sufficient in scale to accommodate the passenger loads. Care will be also be made towards the enhancement of the site’s ecological functioning. This project is about the planning and design for more livable and complete communities. The results of policy review and site analysis will be elaborated through design. It is hoped that the finding will be applicable to similar transit nodes and waterfronts.

Abstract:
There is an app for everything, however, not every app delivers what the user expects. As a student, I had many tasks which were routine such as keeping track of the courses, events, exams or to dine. I wished for a mobile application that would ease the burden these routines create. While there was an LNU mobile application, it failed to address some of the needs I had as a student. Consequently, I felt it lacked the tools I needed to be successful. For instance, absent features such as a personalized academic calendar prevented me from finding relevant information about the location and times of classes. On our way to improve the functionality of the current solution, we started with surveying other students and collecting their thoughts about the LNU mobile app. Next, we performed market research in order to understand how other universities handled these needs. Finally, we combined the findings and built a prototype for students to test. The prototype managed to achieve higher rates of student satisfaction and will serve as the basis for future development.

Abstract:
This study treats the design of secondary structures for wheel-loaded decks. It concludes that significant savings in structural weight, overall cost and environmental impact can be obtained by an improved design. The rules of three classification societies are examined and their principle differences are discussed. Weight and cost optimal solutions of rule-based design are identified for a deck of a typical short-sea RoRo-vessel. The rule-optimal designs are assessed and further improved on the basis of FEcalculations and the economic and environmental benefits associated with the best solutions are approximated.

Abstract:
Since 2011, Egypt has been in a state of chaos and instability. During this time women have suffered disproportionality in comparison to their male counterparts. However, the poor state of affairs for women did not begin after 2011; while women have slowly gained more rights during the last decade, Egypt’s commitment to gender equality has always fallen short. This paper investigates the current state of affairs for women’s rights in Egypt, especially in wake of the 2011 Revolution, and asserts that the poor quality of women’s rights is a result of a battle for power between the military and Islamic politicians, specifically the Muslim Brotherhood. It then analyzes the possibility of a better future for Egypt through an examination of Turkey because it is a secular Islamic state, which has recently reduced military power and increased democratic inclusion in politics. Ultimately, the potential for dramatic improvement in women’s rights in Egypt would necessitate a significant cultural shift, as well as greater inclusion in government—both of which are unlikely given the current state of Egyptian culture and politics.

Abstract:

Abstract:

How does civic education affect homeland security? A civic education curriculum that provides for the foundations of our youths individual and collective identity may significantly contribute to the preservation of our democracy and enhance homeland security. Through a civic education, students can enhance their grasp of the concepts of our American representative democracy and learn the tenets of good citizenship, critical thinking, and the ability to self-govern. Presidential Directive Number Eight (8) clearly indicates the need for national preparedness using a whole of nation approach. The plan requires robust citizen engagement. To have an informed engaged citizenry and for a democracy to thrive, the populace must be educated. But there is no guidance or mention of the education of American youth or how such education may play a role in achieving the goals of national preparedness. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reported in 2010 that only 27 percent of the nations fourth-grade students were proficient in civics. Only 22 percent and 24 percent of eighth-grade and twelfth-grade students, respectively, were proficient in the area. Civic education must provide youth with a personal and collective identity.

Freddo, Alessia. "Biochar : for better or for worse?" Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2013. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/48115/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents biochar state of the art and investigations into the environmental benefits and potential impacts of biochar application to soil. Specifically, the opportunity biochar has to increase concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTE) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil was investigated and contextualised. Results indicated limited environmental impacts in this regard. The capacity of biochar to interact with organic compounds was studied in two contexts: PAHs absorption and partitioning; and with respect to bioavailability and potential deactivation of herbicides. Regarding PAH partitioning, sewage sludge biochar (SSBC) was established to be more efficient than sewage sludge (SS) in reducing the bioaccumulation of PAHs in Lactuca satuva L. grown in contaminated soil; while increasing significantly (p < 0.05) biomass yield, relatively to a soil only control. Regarding herbicides, biochar amended soil was observed to reduce herbicide extractability (< 2%). This extractability being far lower than that observed in the biochar free control soils (40% and 90%). 14C-radiorespirometry indicated that herbicide sequestration within biochar greatly reduced its bioavailability. Biochar influence upon weed survival indicated high biochar application rates (5%) to reduce the effectiveness of herbicides, suggesting that biochar incorporation in to soil at these levels could potentially undermine agriculture that relies upon herbicides. Finally, biochar was tested as microbial carrier. Rhizobacteria survival was established to be higher in biochar produced from redwood than in peat (a common microbial carrier) at high incubation temperatures (25°C and 35°C). In conclusion, biochar addition to soil presents limited direct environmental pollution impact. While biochar absorptivity may be beneficial in mitigating the bioavailability of organic contaminants this trait needs to be considered carefully in agricultural soils where herbicides are relied upon. Given the encouraging results regarding the potential for biochar to act as a microbial inoculant carrier, further research is warranted.

Mckay, Gregory. "Better-quasi-orders : extensions and abstractions." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/56893/.

Full text
Abstract:
We generalise the notion of δ-scattered to partial orders and prove that some large classes of δ-scattered partial orders are better-quasi-ordered under embeddability. This generalises theorems of Laver, Corominas and Thomassé regarding δ-scattered linear orders, δ-scattered trees, countable pseudo-trees and N-free partial orders. In particular, a class of countable partial orders is better-quasi-ordered whenever the class of indecomposable subsets of its members satisfies a natural strengthening of better-quasi-order. We prove that some natural classes of structured δ-scattered pseudo-trees are better quasi-ordered, strengthening similar results of Kříž, Corominas and Laver. We then use this theorem to prove that some large classes of graphs are better-quasi-ordered under the induced subgraph relation, thus generalising results of Damaschke and Thomassé. We investigate abstract better-quasi-orders by modifying the normal definition of better-quasi-order to use an alternative Ramsey space rather than exclusively the Ellentuck space as is usual. We classify the possible notions of well-quasi-order that can arise by generalising in this way, before proving that the corresponding notion of better-quasi-order is closed under taking iterated power sets, as happens in the usual case. We consider Shelah's notion of better-quasi-orders for uncountable cardinals, and prove that the corresponding modification of his definition using fronts instead of barriers is equivalent. This gives rise to a natural version of Simpson's definition of better-quasi-order for uncountable cardinals, even in the absence of any Ramsey-theoretic results. We give a classification of the fronts on [K]ω, providing a description of how far away a front is from being a barrier.

LIU, JIA. "Achieving Better Collaboration for IT Offshoring." Thesis, KTH, Industriell Management, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-187699.

Abstract:
Along with globalization, offshoring strategy has been attractive to more and more IT companies and regarded as an industry changer as tremendous benefits can be enabled from this strategy. However, considering the potential risks and uncertainties, offshoring can also be risky and even lead to failure or huge loss because of the inefficiency and obstacles in collaboration among offshoring teams. To be able to guarantee better collaboration for IT offshoring, both related theories about offshoring and results from the empirical study have been combined and analyzed. As for the methodology applied in the study, a case company Sigma IT & Management is mainly investigated for phenomenon exploration as this company has a long-term IT offshoring strategic partner in Ukraine. Qualitative data is valued greatly in obtaining a deeper knowledge of various opinions and views from the representatives out of the offshoring team. As an exploratory-interpretive study, it primarily uses interviews with text analysis for results generation. The conclusion of this study to IT offshoring collaboration is twofold. Firstly from the functional perspective, it fills the shortage of supportive checklist for project managers to guarantee a better offshoring collaboration, as well as the proper methods in evaluating interaction barriers among offshoring teams. Secondly from the individual perspective, this thesis study is concluded with a table of success factors to improve the bi-direction communication and the collaboration efficiency for offshoring teams.

Abstract:
It is well known that for highly skewed distributions the standard method of using the t statistic for the confidence interval of the mean does not give robust results. This is an important problem for importance sampling (IS) as its final distribution is often skewed due to a heavy tailed weight distribution. In this paper, we first explain Hall's transformation and its variants to correct the confidence interval of the mean and then evaluate the performance of these methods for two numerical examples from finance which have closed-form solutions. Finally, we assess the performance of these methods for credit risk examples. Our numerical results suggest that Hall's transformation or one of its variants can be safely used in correcting the two-sided confidence intervals of financial simulations.(author's abstract)

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with combinatorics, order theory and descriptive set theory. The first contribution is to the theory of well-quasi-orders (wqo) and better-quasi-orders (bqo). The main result is the proof of a conjecture made by Maurice Pouzet in 1978 his thèse d'état which states that any wqo whose ideal completion remainder is bqo is actually bqo. Our proof relies on new results with both a combinatorial and a topological flavour concerning maps from a front into a compact metric space. The second contribution is of a more applied nature and deals with topological spaces. We define a quasi-order on the subsets of every second countable To topological space in a way that generalises the Wadge quasi-order on the Baire space, while extending its nice properties to virtually all these topological spaces. The Wadge quasi-order of reducibility by continuous functions is wqo on Borel subsets of the Baire space, this quasi-order is however far less satisfactory for other important topological spaces such as the real line, as Hertling, Ikegami and Schlicht notably observed. Some authors have therefore studied reducibility with respect to some classes of discontinuous functions to remedy this situation. We propose instead to keep continuity but to weaken the notion of function to that of relation. Using the notion of admissible representation studied in Type-2 theory of effectivity, we define the quasi-order of reducibility by relatively continuous relations. We show that this quasi-order both refines the classical hierarchies of complexity and is wqo on the Borel subsets of virtually every second countable To space - including every (quasi-)Polish space

Abstract:
Computer-assisted learning is older than Turing machines, and constantly evolves as technology improves. While some teachers are resistant to using technology in the classroom, “e-learning” techniques are becoming more common in almost every school, from K-12 to universities. As technology becomes more widespread, it becomes crucial to examine the various methodologies of computer-assisted learning and find the techniques that are most effective. This paper explores the effectiveness of one such methodology, spaced repetition. This technique applies to homework assignments available to students online. We include an exploration of several existing apps that use this technique, and introduce our own novel app, Polycommit. Polycommit was developed for use with several Cal Poly classes and was deployed during the first half of the Spring 2017 quarter. With careful attention to user feedback, we created a tool that motivated students to form better study habits. While our results do not show statistically significant improvement to student grades, this tool gives insight into how modern technology and gamification can be leveraged to create an engaging app that encourages positive study habits, and gives us a platform to develop future applications concerning gamification.

This fact sheet is one in a series of fifteen for private water well owners. The one- to four-page fact sheets will be assembled into a two-pocket folder entitled Private Well Owners Guide. The titles will also be a part of the Changing Rural Landscapes project whose goal is to educate exurban, small acreage residents. The authors have made every effort to align the fact sheets with the proposed Arizona Cooperative Extension booklet An Arizona Well Owners Guide to Water Sources, Quality, Sources, Testing, Treatment, and Well Maintenance by Artiola and Uhlman. The private well owner project was funded by both the University of Arizonas Water Sustainability Program-Technology and Research Initiative Fund and the USDA-CSREES Region 9 Water Quality Program.
