Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to develop a best practice recommendation for health promoting interventions for nurses. A total of 26 studies were systematically included, and identified a nurse self-care deficit, its correlation with adverse patient events, followed by an array of health promoting interventions for nurses. An extensive review of this literature supported the implementation of exercise, Reiki, mindfulness meditation, psycho-educational programs, musical therapy, and auricular acupuncture as health promoting interventions for nurses. Inclusion of the findings into a CBT module for nurses at various facilities could increase awareness for the deficit and compliance for according health promoting interventions. Increasing the awareness for, and availability of, health-promoting interventions could result in an increase in nurse wellbeing could improve patient care, safety, and health as a whole.

Wallace, Jenna. "Chronic Pain Management: Implementing Best Practice Strategies." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10365/25924.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to improve the monitoring of chronic pain patients at a rural primary care clinic by creating and implementing a chronic pain flow sheet and pain visit template within the electronic health record. These evidence-based tools were developed using published guidelines regarding the monitoring of chronic pain patients. The clinic has three providers, one physician and two advanced practice providers, and provides primary care along with an extensive amount of chronic pain management. An initial survey was performed on the three providers via a questionnaire along with open discussion regarding their current chronic pain management practice. All providers reported treating chronic pain patients was difficult and the electronic health record was currently not user-friendly when monitoring chronic pain patients. The flow sheet and pain visit template was designed by the project leader (writer) and created by the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department. Once it was created, an initial chart review and flow sheet implementation was performed on a sample population of adult chronic pain patients at the clinic. Providers were educated on the available flow sheet along with the pain visit template available for use. A six-month chart review was conducted to evaluate the project and determined how the flow sheet and template were utilized. A post-implementation survey, similar to the initial questionnaire, was also dispensed and analyzed. Results indicate providers do plan to use the designed monitoring tools but there were some barriers standing in the way of consistent use. The chart review found an increase in presence of pain contracts signed and filed within the last year, but a decrease in the presence of a pain visit within the last four months, urine drug screen within the last six months, and the prescription drug monitoring program checked within the last six months.

Abstract:
In Western Australia there have previously been very limited attempts to deal with the issue of household hazardous waste (HHW). This report presents the findings of a worldwide literature review to determine “best practice” in the collection of household hazardous waste. The Waste Division of the Department of Environment Western Australia determined the need for this review, to assist in developing their strategies to deal with the problematic household hazardous waste stream. This research initially examined the legislative framework for the management of HHW within Australia, and overseas in Europe, United Kingdom (UK), New Zealand, Canada, United States, Africa, Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Japan. The research then focused on identifying and analysing the existing HHW collection systems within Australia and overseas, the collection methods that were used and the costs incurred. The research identified that countries where separate collections of HHW are organised, usually rely on a combination of methods to collect the HHW. Examination of the literature identified the costs of collecting HHW varied considerably between different countries and the various identified programs. During the research, it also became evident that a number of interesting initiatives for specific items of HHW were being undertaken, such as the Community RoPaint Program in the UK. Education and promotion programs for the collection of HHW were also reviewed during the research, and it was apparent that the success of any HHW collection program is largely dependent on educating the public using all forms of media.

Lee, Gan Kai William. "A decision model for manufacturing best practice adoption : linking practices to competitive strategies." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2007. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/2724.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes research that has developed a decision model for the analytical selection of manufacturing best practices. The competitiveness and growth in the manufacturing sector is critical for Singapore economy. Design and improvement of manufacturing systems is imperative to sustain the competitiveness of manufacturing organisations in the country. It is common for companies to adopt manufacturing best practices in this design process to emulate the success and performance of their counterparts. However, practices should be adapted to the competitive environment and strategy of the company to yield the desired results. Therefore, linkages between best practices and their associated competitive priorities will present useful guidelines for action to help manufacturing organisations achieve superior performance. The research programme has set out to define a decision model for best practice adoption. A broad taxonomy of manufacturing strategies and concepts has been used to identify and cluster a list of popular best practices commonly adopted. The decision framework for best practice adoption process is then formulated and a preliminary decision model constructed. This model is verified through semistructured interviews with industry and academic experts. Validation of model is conducted via case study research on eight manufacturing organisations. Linkages between practices and competitive strategies are then constructed to establish the final decision model. Finally, this decision model is illustrated in the form of a guidebook to help practitioner in the best practice selection process. This research has bridged the fields of manufacturing strategy and best practice research by establishing a comprehensive taxonomy of manufacturing strategies and concepts to classify the popular and commonly adopted best practices. A decision model that links best practices to competitive strategies has been developed to select the most appropriate practices for an environment. Thus, the work presented in this thesis has made a significant and original contribution to knowledge on the provision of analytical decision support for practitioners engaging in the manufacturing best practice adoption process.

This study investigates the occurrence of denitrifying soil bacteria in a bioretention system located in Singapore and containing a saturated anoxic zone intended to facilitate denitrification. Soil samples were collected from six depths within the rain garden, four of which were within the saturated anoxic zone. These samples were analyzed using endpoint PCR, targeting total bacterial 16S rRNA or a denitrification gene (nosZ) in order to determine presence or absence of denitrifying bacteria. Three dilutions were used to produce semiquantitative results for the abundance of denitrifying bacteria in a sample relative to samples from other depths. The highest numbers of nosZ amplicons per gram of soil were observed in the deeper levels of the saturated anoxic zone as well as within the root zone of the rain garden. Subsurface water samples from the saturated anoxic zone were also analyzed for oxidation-reduction potential, dissolved oxygen, and nitrogen and phosphorus species. Concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were below the detection limit for most samples, indicating consumption by denitrifying bacteria and high rates of removal for long detention times. Ammonia and phosphorus concentrations are of potential concern because they appear to increase within the saturated anoxic zone.

Abstract:
The research topic for this thesis is the transfer of best practice from a MNC to a subsidiary during the pre-implementation phase of an ERP system. A lot is written about best practice transfer but there is a call for more research on how the implementation is perceived from a subsidiary perspective. This study wishes to contribute to the literature in the intersection between knowledge transfer and legitimacy within MNCs. In order to do so, this thesis was conducted through a qualitative case study and data was mainly collected through semi-structured interviews. Based on the literature review five factors were identified that can affect the best practice transfer Furthermore, the potential effect of legitimacy related to the knowledge transfer was investigated. The thesis resulted in the classification of indirect and direct factors that affect the transfer of best practices in an MNC and their impact on knowledge implementation and the increase of internal legitimacy for a subsidiary. Moreover, a relationship between knowledge and legitimacy was observed. An interesting finding that calls for more research was the facilitating effects of internal audits on the knowledge transfer.

Bishop, James. "Managing technical knowledge to enhance organisational best practice." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/4657.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years the construction industry has become increasingly aware of the potential of the technical knowledge held by construction professionals and the need to manage it effectively. However, organisations have experienced numerous problems in implementing and sustaining Knowledge Management (KM) initiatives. A key reason for this, which has been cited both within industry and academia, is a lack of understanding of the best-suited KM approaches available and how to adopt them. In particular, the importance of people-orientated KM practices, specifically in the case of construction firms who have a high level of dependence on the tacit knowledge of their employees, has been well documented with many KM authors calling for further research in this area. The research undertaken for this study was initiated in response to the need for further research and an improved understanding of KM (people-orientated KM in particular) best practice. The research was also focussed on establishing an effective KM initiative within Ramboll Whitbybird; the sponsoring organisation. The central aim of the research was therefore to “deliver a framework that facilitates the retention and reuse of knowledge, which will increase Ramboll Whitbybird's potential to drive engineering best practice and respond appropriately to conventional and emerging business opportunities.” To achieve this an action research approach was adopted, facilitated through the use of literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, and other data collection methods, to enable the findings to be implemented within an industrial setting. Through extensive industry involvement the research highlighted the core components necessary for a successful KM initiative, and the actions necessary from those involved in implementing, managing and sustaining KM activities within construction firms. The findings demonstrated that an organisation wishing to realise effective KM needs to establish a clear definition and understanding of KM across the business, which can be achieved through the compilation of a KM strategy (statement) and action plan. It also needs to acknowledge the importance of addressing the critical factors that will determine the success of its KM initiative such as the need for KM champions and a supporting team, a fit with the way people work and an alignment with business objectives. The research also highlighted the importance of people-orientated KM practices, and that construction organisations in particular should identify and prioritise KM activities such as Communities of Practice (CoPs), due to their reliance on tacit knowledge transfer. However, in order to maximise the benefits to individuals and the business, the organisation will need to take a ‘light touch' approach to the management of CoPs. Supporting people-based KM activities with the right technology is an important factor, particularly as organisations expand and become more geographically dispersed. To ensure that this technology is an effective supporter of KM it needs to be tailored to fit with the KM needs of the business, and will need to become de-centralised in its operation. Finally, the research outlined the importance for the organisation to consider the integration of KM within the daily operation of the business by incorporating KM effectively into communication and reporting structures, while also ensuring that it becomes a core aspect of its Quality Assurance (QA) procedures.

This thesis outlines the results of an occupational hygiene monitoring program implemented at Minara Resources' Murrin Murrin mine site. The research was conducted as part of a collaborative agreement between Edith Cowan University and Minara Resources, the title of which was "Establishing best practice protocols in the management of occupational and environmental health in a high risk mining and ore processing environment". To form the basis of this research it was hypothesised that chemical hazards had not been adequately identified, that existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards, and that the implementation of a comprehensive hazard identification and monitoring program would greatly improve the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

Abstract:

The gaming industry is getting bigger for each year and new games hit the market almost every week. But what makes a game a success or a flop? In the end it is the users, gamers, that have decide if they think a game is good or not. But what do a gamer want form a game? This thesis looks mainly into what the game players like when it comes to communication in multiplayer games. It also looks at players’ preferences for using the graphic settings to control the flow in the game (the frames per second), and preferences when it comes to music and sound in the game. A questionnaire was used to collect the quantitative data, while user testing was used to get qualitative data on the effect of using voice over IP (VoIP) when playing a multiplayer game. The game used for testing is Age of Conan from Funcom. The data collected are analyzed to get results. These results are used to make guidelines that can be used by game producers and developers when making new games. These guidelines are what are deemed best practices based on the data collected. The research concludes that VoIP has an important role in multiplayer games and that game producers should be conscious on the use of VoIP when making multiplayer games. For the use of graphic settings to control the flow the conclusion is that this is common to do and important for the game experience. Lastly it concludes that music is very important for the mood of the game.

Abstract:
For ages past, inscribed culture heritage materials have been preserved, organised, and disseminated by libraries, museums, and archive centres. Arabic manuscripts, as one of the most fragile and valuable examples of mankind's heritage, are kept in different parts of the world. With the increasing demand for these manuscripts by users, many Arabic manuscript holders have tended to use technology in order to preserve this fragile information resource and provide a better service for users. Digital libraries open new frontiers for Arabic manuscript providers and end-users. In the last five years, a number of digital libraries providing access to some Arabic manuscripts have been launched in several parts of the world. There are also ongoing projects to establish a digital library of Arabic manuscripts (e.g. in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). A number of studies have called for the involvement of users in building and maintaining digital libraries to provide a better service. This study aims to explore and specify Arabic manuscript users' (providers and end-users) requirements to provide best practice for digital libraries of Arabic manuscripts. In order to elicit Arabic manuscripts users' requirements, the study has employed both desk research and a mixed methods approach. This study has selected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as the research environment. The findings of this study show willingness by number of Arabic manuscript providers to establish a digital library of Arabic manuscripts. In addition, the majority of surveyed end-users have previous experience of using internet resources (e.g. digital libraries) for locating and accessing Arabic manuscripts. End-users have specific requirements based on their informationseeking behaviour which are in contrast with those of providers, such as obtaining a hard copy of a manuscript.

Power, Susann. "An applied ethics analysis of best practice tourism entrepreneurs." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2015. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/807142/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ethical entrepreneurship and by extension wider best practice are noble goals for the future of tourism. However, questions arise which concepts, such as values motivations, actions and challenges underpin these goals. This thesis seeks to answers these questions and in so doing develop an applied ethics analysis for best practice entrepreneurs in tourism. The research is situated in sustainable tourism, which is ethically very complex and has thus far been dominated by the economic, social and environmental triple bottom line thinking. This research takes a different approach by applying a value-behavioural lens to best practice entrepreneurship. In so doing, the focus shifts from impacts and consequences towards those values and actions that determine best practice entrepreneurship. The originality of the research is grounded in a two-pronged research strategy, combining archival research and methods from Personal Construct Theory through the process of iteration. Both strategies are currently underused in tourism research. This constitutes an important methodological contribution. Furthermore, a unique set of archival data in the form of Tourism for Tomorrow Awards applications and judges’ reports enhances the originality of the findings. Archival data was complemented by semi-structured interviews with so-called ethical tourism entrepreneurs. A mix of source and method triangulation has added significant rigour to this research. The key findings are that best practice in tourism is ethically very complex, which suggests a form of ethical pragmatism. Second, a dissonance exists between motivations for best practice, which are value-pluralistic, and ethical judgement making, which is more principle-based. Third, a further dissonance was identified between admittance/awareness and action for issues of misrepresentation, whereas no dissonance was found for relationship or distribution dilemmas. This thesis has combined three strands of research: business ethics, entrepreneurship and sustainable tourism. This original approach lays ground for change towards a more ethically-bound entrepreneurial practice in tourism.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to present a best practice model to support nurses experiencing work-related bereavement to prevent complicated grief following the death of a patient. The death of a patient is a universal experience for nurses. Nurses are at risk for experiencing complicated grief due to limited time to process patient deaths. Review of the literature in PubMed was conducted using the keywords: nurse, death, patient death, attitudes, nurses' response and dying. The project produced a best practice model for nurses experiencing work-related bereavement. The Helping Overcome Patient Expiration (HOPE) Model gives nurses experiencing work-related bereavement options for support. It incorporates a monthly nurse's grief support meeting, Zen room, handout and workplace memorial. The project culminated in a hypothetical implementation and evaluation plan of the HOPE Model. The proposed best practice model for nurses experiencing work-related bereavement would reduce possible stressors, prevent maladaptive coping, and promote nurse retention in hospitals.

Esterhuyse, Maxine Pier. "A best practice e-learning environment for software training." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/12165.

Full text
Abstract:
The incorporation of best practice in e-learning environments can increase the probability of success for companies and learners alike. By identifying and understanding the barriers that potential learners may face when interacting with e-learning products, the potential for e-learning failure may be alleviated. There are a variety of benefits that may be realised by companies incorporating e-learning opportunities into their management strategies. However, certain pedagogical principles, metrics and components need to be investigated and implemented in order for a corporate e-learning environment to be successful. The aim of this research is to prototype and evaluate a practical e-learning environment for software training (eLESTP) with e-learning components consisting of interactive learning objects that can guide the development and management of online training in the corporate context. The eLESTP is based on a theoretical contribution that is conceptualised in the form of an e-learning environment for software training (eLESTT). Hence, this study followed a research methodology that is appropriate for educational technologies, namely the Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology, which was applied in iterative cycles. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected by means of a case study, interviews, a focus group and survey. The proposed eLESTP underwent several iterations of feedback and improvement and the result is a real-world solution to the problem at hand. With the purpose of determining the success of corporate e-learning, the barriers and critical success factors for e-learning as well as evaluation criteria were explored. Interviews, a focus group and a survey were conducted in order to validate the investigated literature in a real-world context. Informal interviews enabled a better understanding of the organisational context of this study. The focus group was conducted with customers who were undergoing face-to-face training using conveyancing software developed by Korbitec. Many of the issues faced by learners identified in literature regarding e-learning in developing countries were identified by the participants from the case study. An e-learning survey was used to gather information regarding the intention of Korbitec’s customers to use e-learning as well as their satisfaction with using e-learning. From the survey, it was found that respondents were positive regarding intention to use and satisfaction toward e-learning usage. DBR Cycle 1: Problem Investigation and Proposal entailed the initial problem investigation by conducting a literature review, focus group and survey. DBR Cycle 2: Design Alternative 1 of this study involved a design alternative for eLESTP, namely Prototype 1. DBR Cycle 3: Design and Evaluate Alternative 2 involved the design and prototyping of Prototype 2 for eLESTP as well as the improvement of Prototype 2 through sub-cycles of testing and refinement. The suggestions for improvement were obtained from the relevant stakeholders at Korbitec who are content developers and subject-matter experts. The criteria used to evaluate the success of eLESTP, including its e-learning components, were synthesised and adapted from literature and a new set of evaluation criteria for e-learning environments in software training contexts was proposed. The evaluated eLESTP consists of the technology basis of the Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle), design guidelines for e-learning components, certification and competency-based training, pedagogical principles and best practice. Overall, eLESTP was positively received by various evaluator groups in formative and summative evaluations. The research results indicate that the use of an e-learning environment for software training purposes was useful and necessary. Abstract:
The goal of this thesis was set to meet the demands of a telecommunication operator that needed to solve its problems with lack of capacity by switch translocation. This thesis thus may significantly increase the chances of success of this organizationally challenging task by finding relevant best practise ITIL. The thesis sets the method for relevant best practice ITIL selection using the table where columns represent metrics and risks of the project while rows represent elements from chapter Release and Deployment Management. Results of this method are recommendations that should be implemented in the project plans. The advantage of this ITIL-based method is that it is customer oriented and uses clear terminology. The benefits of this method may be increased when used in synergy by companies that implemented ITIL processes.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, a numerical study of simulating and computing the magnetocaloric properties of magnetic materials is presented. The main objective was to deduce the optimal procedure to obtain the isothermal change in entropy of magnetic systems, by evaluating two different formulas of entropy extraction, one relying on the magnetization of the material and the other on the magnet's heat capacity. The magnetic systems were simulated using two different Monte Carlo algorithms, the Metropolis and Wang-Landau procedures. The two entropy methods proved to be comparably similar to one another. Both approaches produced reliable and consistent results, though finite size effects could occur if the simulated system became too small. Erroneous fluctuations that invalidated the results did not seem stem from discrepancies between the entropy methods but mainly from the computation of the heat capacity itself. Accurate determination of the heat capacity via an internal energy derivative generated excellent results, while a heat capacity obtained from a variance formula of the internal energy rendered the extracted entropy unusable. The results acquired from the Metropolis algorithm were consistent, accurate and dependable, while all of those produced via the Wang-Landau method exhibited intrinsic fluctuations of varying severity. The Wang-Landau method also proved to be computationally ineffective compared to the Metropolis algorithm, rendering the method not suitable for magnetic simulations of this type.

Abstract:

Wakefield, Shellee Jane. "Police Use of Interpreters: Understanding Police Perceptions, Recognising Current Practice and Informing Best Practice." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365731.

Full text
Abstract:
Current research on interpreters in the legal system acknowledges the complexity of their role and the potential for both positive and negative effects of interpreter-mediated communication (Boser, 2013; Heydon & Lai, 2013; Laster & Taylor, 1994). However, reports of the Australian police’s reluctance to provide interpreter services or of using inappropriate people suggest that non-native speaking people may be at risk (Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC), 1992; Gibbons, 2003; McMillan, 2009). Moreover, ineffective use of interpreters can impact the already overextended time and resources of police and risks fracturing relationships with members of the community that they aim to build. To date, the apparent discrepancy between police guidelines that encourage interpreter use and these negative reports has been given limited support by research, as it rarely takes into account the police perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to explore the use of interpreters from a policing perspective. A triangulated methodology was devised to investigate police perceptions of using interpreters, how police use interpreters in interviews with suspects, and police policy and guidelines about how to use interpreters. Such an investigation would also allow for an examination of interpreter use by police with victims, witnesses, suspects and informants. Multiple angles of investigation were used because improving police use of interpreters requires an investigation to understand police perceptions, recognise current practice and inform best practice. Considering these three elements will add to the growing empirical understanding of police use of interpreters and make a unique and practical contribution to improved police guidelines and training.

Abstract:

Roth, Brianna Marie, and Brianna Marie Roth. "Best practice recommendations to support breastfeeding among low-income women." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626735.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the most current research on the identified gap in breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among low-income mothers when compared with the general population. Women that fall into the “low-income” bracket and who participate in the WIC program are nearly 12% less likely to initiate breastfeeding than the general population, and less likely to continue for a year (Hedberg, 2013). The articles examined discuss the barriers and supportive measures that contribute to or hinder breastfeeding success among low-income prenatal and postpartum mothers. The articles focus on providers knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding in relation to the promotion of breastfeeding among low-income women, interventions to extend the duration of breastfeeding once initiated, strategies to encourage best-practice uptake among nursing staff, ways to motivate low-income women to breastfeeding over formula feed, and the benefits of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Food and Nutrition Service involvement. These articles further discuss the impact women’s confidence regarding breastfeeding has on its success, as well as low-income mother’s experience and perceptions of both professional and peer breastfeeding support. Beyond the review of current literature, this paper will identify best-practice recommendations, a proposed implementation plan, and a proposed evaluation of the implementation process.

Miller, Melina Rose, and Melina Rose Miller. "Best practice guidelines for skin-to-skin contact following birth." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626827.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to develop an educational pamphlet with best practice guidelines for expectant parents and nurses about skin-to-skin contact. The research conducted for this thesis focused on the benefits of skin-to-skin contact for mothers, pre-term infants, and term infants following both vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Skin-to-skin contact has been referred to as the optimal form of care for a newborn (Erlandsson, Dsilna, Fagerberg, & Christensson, 2007). When skin-to-skin contact does not occur following birth, the most common reasons are lack of education among parents and lack of collaboration of the healthcare team (Zwedberg, Blomquist, & Sigestad, 2013). Some of the benefits skin-to-skin contact has to offer for mothers is as a reduction in anxiety, depression, and postpartum hemorrhage (Moore, Anderson, & Bergmen, 2009). Some of the benefits of skin-to-skin contact for infants is a reduction in sepsis, infection, and hypothermia. Pre-term infants are also more likely to breastfeed and gain more weight daily if they engage in skin-to-skin contact (Conde-Agudelo & Díaz-Rossello, 2016). Implementing an educational pamphlet within the setting of a childbirth class would provide expecting parents with evidence-based information on the benefits and feasibility of skin-to-skin contact.

Athey, Glenn C. "Evaluating a best practice model for an economic development agency." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1998. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3129/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with evaluating effectiveness and performance in economic development agencies. Development agencies are typically quasi- public bodies that operate at metropolitan, sub-regional and local scales with the purpose of promoting and realising economic development in their areas. The aim of this thesis is to develop a best practice model for such agencies. The institutions that were studied as part of this project included a wide range of different economic development organisations located in Belfast, Berlin, Glasgow and London. Initially, the thesis discusses the history of economic development activity at sub-national scales in the UK and internationally, and explores the role that such agencies play. Aspects of organisational performance and effectiveness in the context of economic development agencies are further discussed. The research proceeds according to a framework of organisational analysis, describing and analysing the environment that agencies operate in, the most influential characteristics and factors for agency performance, and features of operational design and implementation. The basis for the original research in this thesis is data from a substantial number of qualitative interviews with individuals from development agencies and other interest groups. The thesis argues that there are a wide range of characteristics and factors that contribute to agency effectiveness and performance, and that these have been insufficiently explored in past research. Economic development agencies are also significantly influenced by the environment which they operate in. Overall, it is argued that in order to be successful at their task, economic development agencies need to be truly excellent organisations. This includes developing effective mechanisms for corporate management, staff development, and a market-led rationale for organisational philosophy and action. The concluding chapter of this thesis develops a framework for creating and sustaining excellence in economic development organisations.

Shabir, Ghulam. "Evaluation and application of best practice in analytical method validation." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2008. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/3778/.

Full text
Abstract:
The coherent body of research described in the existing published work is concerned with new assay method development and validation using novel systematic approaches for pharmaceutical and diagnostic compounds. The first stage of the research was to study how analytical method development and validation are typically carried out at present and to formulate this into a simple step-by-step approach. Such a template and protocol was not only used as the foundation of this research programme but could also serve as a simple systematic guide for other practitioners and those new to the field. Furthermore, it was recognised that this protocol should satisfy the requirements of the most strategically important regulatory agencies. The second stage of this research involved evaluation and application of the above validation approach to new methods that were developed for a diverse range of analytes and samples. A new purity assay for 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6- dione and 4,7-phenanthroline-5,6-dione using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed and validated. Impurities in these compounds were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS). Best practice in method development and validation is equally important in the analysis of both active components and excipients in formulated products. In the first case, a liquid chromatography assay method for determining the content of 2-(diethylamino)-N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) acetamide in a gel formulation was developed and validated. In the second case, the individual contents of three phydroxy benzoic acid ester preservatives in a complex multi-component sample were determined following the development and validation of a liquid chromatography method. Finally, the validation approach was evaluated as applied to another analytical technique. Here, gas chromatography (GC) successfully used to develop a novel assay for p-cymene in tea tree oil formulations presented different analytical problems because of the very complex nature of this natural product. Stability study information to increase the shelf life of the product and validation data for the analytical method for p-cymene content was critically evaluated. iv In essence, the critical review of the requirements for method validation for various agencies and the subsequent preparation of guidelines on how to go about method validation have had a significant impact on how analytical practitioners worldwide go about method development and, more importantly, method validation. Further it was possible to apply these guidelines to conduct a series of effective, successful method validation for assays involving a range of typical pharmaceutical samples.

Thompson, Geoffrey. "Best practice of crane support structures design : an expert survey." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1904.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
Research on cranes and crane support structures has been completed at Stellenbosch University’s Structural Division. In order to link the research already completed with that which is practically relevant, an industry related expert survey was proposed. Consequently, the research title is “Best Practice of Crane Support Structures Design – An Expert Survey”. The primary objective of the study is to complete research, which can be used at a later stage to compile a “best practice” guideline for support structures design. The expert survey allows practical experience and opinion to be gathered from experts. The primary drawback being the uncertainty involved in such opinionated research material. For this reason an attempt is made in the thesis to apply a scientific approach, in order to attain rationally defendable results. The survey was conducted using interviews with experienced crane support structure designers and crane manufacturers in South Africa. The experts were then rated according to their answers to seeded questions, the number of colleague recommendations they each received and the years of experience each expert has. The expert opinion was subsequently combined using the expert ratings as weights. To further improve the scientific rationale behind the results, several of the topics mentioned by the experts were verified using related literature - thereby validating the use of the combined expert opinion for this research. The results obtained from the survey and verification process are regarded as useful to the objectives of the study. Information concerning pre-design specifications, loads and actions, structural analysis, design, design details and fatigue was compiled. The direct results are tabulated in an appendix and commentary, based on the expert opinions, is provided. A failure investigation was also completed with less success than initially intended. This was due, in part, to confidentiality issues and a lack of failure information easily accessible to the experts. For this reason the results of the failure investigation focuses more on various failure mechanisms. The success of the survey indicates that expert opinion is a useful tool for research. Furthermore, the minor differences in expert opinion, when compared to information obtained from crane support structure literature, indicates that the expertise in the South African crane support structure design is at an international standard.

Bonar, Paul Andrew Jude. "Toward best practice in the design of tidal turbine arrays." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31481.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, much research has focused on the possibility of using arrays of turbines to generate clean and predictable power from tidal currents. The first such array is now in development but a number of important questions remain unanswered. Among these, how should turbines be arranged within a tidal stream to maximise their collective performance? And what impacts will such devices have on the marine environment? In beginning to address these questions, this thesis takes two important steps toward establishing best practice in the design of tidal turbine arrays. In the first part of the thesis, the social and ecological impacts of marine energy development are reviewed. This review highlights the importance of communication and public engagement in securing support for a marine energy project and identifies the effects of increasing noise and collision risk on marine life as the most pressing ecological issues to be addressed. In the second part, theoretical models of tidal turbines are examined and a simple numerical model is used to extend existing theories on optimal turbine arrangement. The shallow water equations are used to simulate flow through an idealised channel and an actuator disc model is used to represent a single row of tidal turbines as a line sink of momentum. Optimal turbine arrangements are then sought for different and increasingly realistic flow conditions. Results provide new and important insights into the dynamics of flow through partial-width arrays and suggest that arranging turbines unevenly within the flow cross-section can increase considerably their collective power output.

Simko, Andrew Jack. "Performance Analysis of an Urban Stormwater Best Management Practice Retrofit." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64931.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, the primary objective of traditional stormwater best management practices (BMPs) was to attenuate peak runoff discharges from urban areas. There has been growing demand to construct BMPs that improve stormwater runoff quality to reduce pollutant loading into downstream water bodies. A BMP located in Herndon, Virginia was retrofitted in 2009. Previously a dry detention pond, the new BMP design contains permanent wet pools as well as elements of Low Impact Development practices. A performance analysis was conducted on the retrofit to determine if the BMP was removing pollutants from stormwater runoff. Two mass-based methods were utilized for the performance analysis: the Summation of Loads Method and Effluent Probability Method. The Kaplan-Meier method and Robust Regression on ordered statistics (ROS) were used to make it possible to include censored datasets in the analysis. Analysis with the SOL method showed removal of suspended sediment, nitrogen, iron, and copper. Export of dissolved solids, phosphorus, organic carbon, and manganese was observed. The results of the Effluent Probability Method showed statistically significant reductions of sediment, iron, and copper across the entire range of monitored storm event sizes (p-value≤0.05). There was no statistical difference between the influent and effluent loads of nitrogen. Negative performance of dissolved solids, phosphorus, organic carbon, and manganese were observed for the entire range of monitored storm event sizes. The results of both methods indicated that the BMP retrofit is effectively removing sediment but failing to achieve significant nutrient reductions. This may be due to the creation of anoxic conditions from the oxygen demand of the micropool sediments and microbial degradation of vegetation within the BMP. Removal of the sediment bed and harvesting of the vegetation would likely improve the performance of the BMP.
