Turney, Richard. "Reading Berger : responding to the literary." Thesis, University of York, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9989/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis performs original close readings of a number of texts by John Berger, responding in particular to the work's literary qualities. It is the contention herein that the critical heritage has consistently failed to account for the richness and distinctiveness of Berger's work, attempting to place him within the context of Marxist thought and literature: both applying to the texts pre-exisiting models for writing and reading politically engaged work, and using the texts as illustrations of, and an opportunity to debate the merits of, Berger's own explanations for his work. This approach has consistently failed to account for the richest moments and works in Berger's oeuvre. In the course of the readings in this thesis, a number of hitherto underemphasised themes and qualities in the work are raised to prominence: Berger is a consistent and inventive writer of himself, both dramatising and referring to himself by naming characters 'John' and its etymological cousins, among other strategies. His fiction is also fascinated by representing the problems of searching, discovery and doubt. At its richest, the work contains within it both the impression of a search and the restriction of that search by the limits of what is knowable, readable, legible, or interpretable. He is an obsessive writer of animals. He is also a writer of patterns of figures that exist in an idiolectic vocabulary of symbols that shift and alter somewhat with every iteration. He is an inventive writer of dreams, and an original writer about sex, and a writer seemingly energised by working between genres and traditions, and by probing the spaces between various oppositions: the material and metaphysical, the present and the absent, life and death, historical and personal. This thesis is also among the first able to make use of the manuscripts and correspondence contained within the John Berger Archive in the British Library.

Berger, Aaron Damien. "A travel demand model for rural areas." Thesis, Montana State University, 2012. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2012/berger/BergerA1212.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Gallatin County has experienced dramatic population growth over the past decade. The Sonoran Institute has been developing land use planning tools to help address the issues arising from this high growth. One of the most serious impacts of high population growth is increased vehicle traffic, typically measured through vehicle miles traveled. The Sonoran Institute's land use planning tools were used to develop two future growth scenarios, one representing growth following current trends and the other representing a higher population density and higher employment/residential mix of development. The project task was to predict the total daily vehicle miles traveled for the two future scenarios using a travel demand model. The project goals were to develop a travel demand model that was simple to run, accurate, sensitive to changes in urban form, and could output daily vehicle miles traveled for future land development scenarios. The project used a literature review to determine expected effects of changes in urban form on travel behavior, and the sensitivity of current travel modeling methods to changes in urban form. For simplicity, the travel modeling method known as the fourstep process was selected for the project with modifications to add sensitivity to urban form. Current literature almost entirely states that the basic four-step model is not sensitive to urban form. One source did indicate that the four-step process might have some sensitivity to changes in urban form, but this sensitivity was not quantified. A basic four-step process model was run for a base year and the two future scenarios. The results indicated that the high density/high mix scenario reduced daily vehicle miles traveled by about 13%. This shows that the basic four-step model is sensitive to urban form. This sensitivity was analyzed through a series of idealized land development scenarios, and the sensitivity of the process to changes in urban form was quantified. The results were then incorporated into a now modified four-step model that produced a 16% reduction in daily vehicle miles traveled between the future scenarios while also providing better comparative accuracy between the two scenarios. This method met the initial objectives of the project.

Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020EHES0188.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines how transhumance shepherding in Provence was transformed from the early 2000s to 2020 by a series of reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that increasingly normalized and bureaucratized the profession. Early in the 2000s, the policy focus placed on the “multifunctional” character of agriculture combined with the “decoupling” of agricultural aid increased shepherds’ economic dependance on “premiums” that were linked to stricter rules and norms. This shift changed shepherds’ work by requiring cross-compliance with environmental standards. These “public norms”cut across multiple sectors (transportation, health, environment) at different levels of governance (local, national, European), which often overlapped and contradicted one another. Shepherds responded to these norms not only as individuals working alone but also as part of a “localized professional group” (LPG) (Darré 1985) that includes shepherds with differing professional statuses (farmers, salaried workers). This Pastrille covers a vast area of transhumance and knowledge-sharing that spans the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and its borderlands. The group includes shepherds of diverse social backgrounds and career paths who collectively define who shepherds can be and determine what work shepherds can do by establishing professional norms. This research focuses on how the confrontation between the “public norms” and the professional norms affected shepherds torn between the double bind of their desire for a specific work ethos that promoted the preservation of tradition and the demand to comply with new norms that undermined it.This research was conducted in immersion as a shepherd over a period of 15 years. I analyzed change in the ethos of this “localized professional group” and identified three phases of normative confrontation. An initial phase of incomprehension and rejection of measures deemed absurd was followed by a phase of violent confrontation when inspections and sanctions tightened. The final phase of relative appeasement came when shepherds chose to internalize new norms or resigned themselves to doing so. I considered the active and passive strategies implemented by shepherds to deal with the confrontation of norms and look at how representations and professional practices were reconfigured. How did a group that placed preservation of the community above self-affirmation change with time, leaving greater individual latitude in managing imposed “public norms”? How did greater economic dependence on premiums influence shepherds’ practices, by acceptance or by choice, to the detriment of the prior professional ethics? Furthermore, how did younger generations of shepherds adapt to them differently than their elders? How did a career pursued passionately by shepherds close to their herds progressively become a more professionalized occupation taken up by breeders who distance themselves from their livestock? How did development-driven changes, formerly perceived as external to the group, become more familiar and internal as the group’s structure and the contours of its identitychanged and “public norms” were internalized? By examining shepherds in the PACA region, this dissertation contributes to debates on bureaucratization of contemporary societies and considers the impact of rapidly cumulating norms and standards on professional groups and the meaning of work

Abstract:
The rural world – deemed for a long time incapable of reflecting about itself and of developing a political expression of its own – is at the present time the theater of many struggles. These struggles, although entirely specific and multifaceted, often appear capable of expressing, through their action, the widespread criticism addressed to the economic, social and cultural paradigm that until recently seemed universally accepted. The conflicts stemming from this (situation?) appear to define new possible scenarios. Starting from an on field work in Sardinia with the shepherds most involved in the Movimento dei pastori sardi (the Sardinian shepherd's Movement), this work aims to describe the emergence among those shepherds of a collective conscience of themselves and of the contemporary world. Moreover, it is the purpose of this work to investigate how , since 1990, a movement integrally made out of, thought and run by shepherds came to be, thus proving to be entirely endogenous. I have also researched the reasons of the shepherds' perseverance in defending their role in society, which has so far never resulted in a trivial conservative leaning, but rather in the attempt to rewrite their own role in a new society, maintaining at the same time those (traditional) features deemed crucial to the pastoralism's very existence. The analysis of the evidence gathered for this work depicts a movement which sees itself as a link between a very ancient rural tradition and the contemporary forms of social and cultural dialectics and political struggle, integrated into world-wde networks

Abstract:
The ideas of Berger are used in this thesis to explore humankind's struggle to achieve greater sustainability. In his descriptions of the peasantry and modern high-energy cultures of progress Berger insightfully crystallises and represents graphically the observation made by many authors writing in different contexts and from within various disciplines that there have been two fundamentally different systems of beliefs and values in history. His conception of ‘ cultures of survival’ and ‘cultures of progress ’ is used in this thesis to develop a conceptual model for sustainability. The basic idea underlying the conceptual model for sustainability is that cultural systems self-regulate or self-correct as they strive to achieve balance in their relationship to higher systems levels of the biosphere, while improving quality of life. Over large time scales self-regulation takes the form of quite radical transformations in cultural system's key defining beliefs and values. The model holds that the process of self-regulation results in societies moving back and forth along a cultural continuum of beliefs and values, represented at one end by Berger's cultures of survival and at the other by his cultures of progress. This system of self-regulation is fraught with risks arising from factors like the inherently conservative nature of cultural systems, which reduce the fit or alignment between systems of beliefs and values and their context and in doing so generate un-sustainability. The model suggests that over large spans of time movement back and forth along the cultural continuum creates the dynamic balance needed to achieve greater sustainability, at least if irreversible degradation of the biosphere's life-supporting systems and extinction can be avoided. This conceptual model for sustainability demonstrates the validity of the central hypothesis of the thesis, which is that Berger's ideas in the ‘Historical Afterword’ to ‘Pig Earth’ are important and have a valuable contribution to make to the discourse on sustainability.
