Abstract:
Payment Apps or mobile wallet refers to the payment services operated under financial regulation and is performed using a mobile device. The concept of paying using cash, cheque, debit or credit card is off lately becoming outdated. The new payment mechanism which involves payment for a transaction using the mobile wallet or mobile money transfer is gaining momentum. The concept of mobile payment is gradually being accepted and adopted across the globe in different ways. The exclusive first patent defined as ‘Mobile Payment System’ was filed way back in the year 2000. A mobile payment app is an app that consists of your debit and credit card information which helps the users to pay for goods and services digitally or to transfer money to other users using their mobile devices.

The past couple of years, we have observed the rise of the Digital Wallet, a potentially game changing technology application in the financial industry. Digital Wallets allow consumers to pay for purchases through digital devices, and the technology has created a battle among payment networks, banks and technology firms. In this paper, we analyse how the Digital Wallet is impacting the technology space, including the level of disruptiveness and future potential. We have two hypotheses regarding Digital Wallets: H1: The Digital Wallet is disrupting the credit card network. H2. The Digital Wallet is disrupting the physical plastic card.

Abstract:
Rapid digitalisation development has been stampeding widely across today’s societies, and not least in the payment industry. Though, the digitalisation in the payment industry has been very deviating, even between similar well-developed countries, and while there are positive and negative effects with both digital- and physical payment means, there is little knowledge that highlights the influencing factors and accompanied problems. This study therefore explore swhich, and how, different factors influence a country’s degree of digital payments, and creates further understanding of where the payment markets are heading in the future. It is done through a case study of four different industrialised countries, Sweden, Italy, Canada, and Switzerland which involves mapping the countries’ payment markets, as well as potential factors influencing a population’s payment habits, through a perspective of innovation theory in terms of dominant designs and technological discontinuities. Theory of network externalities and two-sided platforms are further used to explain and discuss how a two-sided market, likethe payment market, is affected by changes and other circumstances in different ways. Conclusions are then drawn from the used theories together with a comparison of the findings, and identifies certain influencers to a country’s distribution of payments, as well as provides indications of where the different payments markets are heading in the future. Data is mainly gathered through written material and credible databases, but also from semi-structured interviews.

Abstract:
This work aims at analysing the different spread, impact and importance that digital payments have in two specific areas: China and Italy. Starting from an overview of the historical evolution of money and the description of payment systems, the first chapter underlines how digital payments are playing a crucial role in the countries’ economic and financial environments. Nevertheless, they are developed and perceived by countries in different ways. In the second chapter, after an explanation of the evolution of the Chinese financial sector, I will investigate the development of electronic payments, from card payments to mobile payment services. In the third chapter, then, I will consider the Italian context, offering an overview of cards and mobile payments. In conclusion, as China’s mobile payment services continue to grow both domestically and globally, I will examine the spread and influence that these services have abroad, specifically in Italy. I have conducted a field survey considering an area in which Chinese presence is high and impactful in Italy, i.e. the high fashion context.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to examine the challenges of digital payments, the risks they pose and the impact they have in society. Technology is constantly changing, companies need to keep in pace with technology in order to provide accurate and actual financial information. Therefore it is important to examine the digital transactions impact on accounting. The issue that has been chosen to be studied is to identify the challenges that banks and companies that provide digital payment solutions face and how they work with these challenges. The method that was chosen to achieve the study was the qualitative method and the empirical material were obtained by semistructured interviews. Six respondents participated in the study, four banks and two companies that provides digital payment solutions. The results are analysed with the help of previous research and chosen theoretical concepts of mobile payment, card payment, risks and safety, cost-effectiveness and acceptance of payment services. The result of the theoretical and empirical study implies that higher requirements are placed on banks and companies, they have to follow laws and directives in order to increase the security of digital payments. The study is in swedish.

Abstract:
The mobile payments industry, which is currently at an early stage of development, is taking the direction to be established mainly as an NFC-based industry, and, moreover, led by the mobile digital wallets setting. A mobile digital wallet is a complete payment app for your NFC-enabled mobile phone that enables consumers to pay at stores at the point of sale with a mobile phone. The digital wallet, which is associated with a credit card, integrates all payment-related services like the management and storage of receipts, coupons and offers, and loyalty cards. Currently, there are three big partnerships going ahead of the NFC mPayments stream: Google Wallet, VISA’s Digital Wallet and ISIS Mobile Wallet. Each one of these three mobile digital wallets is led by an actor coming from a different industry of origin. Google Wallet is led by Google, an internet and technology actor. VISA’s Digital Wallet is managed by Visa, a traditional payment processor. And ISIS Mobile Wallet is led by three of the largest US telecom operators: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Thus, applying a business network theory to analyse how the industry of origin of the mobile digital wallet affects the interaction within the partnership formed is a unique and perfectly fitted opportunity. The aim of this Master Thesis was to analyse the influence, regarding interaction, of the origin industry of the leading partners on the NFC-based mobile digital wallet partnerships of the mobile payments developing industry. A literature review on business network theory was conducted, in order to identify key features of the business landscape affecting interaction on business networks, as well as an industry analysis of the mobile payments developing industry. Then, the business network theory approach was applied to the study of the mobile payments digital wallet setting, conducting a discussion based both on the industry analysis performed and a set of interviews with experts on the mobile payments industry.

Abstract:
This study investigates challenges that emerge for Swedish incumbent banks when pursuing compliance with IT security regulations, while simultaneously striving towards innovation in order to maintain market competitiveness in terms of digital payment service offerings. As competition increases within the payment service industry, developing innovative services becomes increasingly important. At the same time, it is essential that these solutions maintain a high level of IT security, both in terms of the preservation of customer trust as well as in terms of compliance with financial regulations. Consequently, the aim of this study was to contribute to research from an incumbent banking perspective, where theory together with a qualitative case study has revolved around the topics of technology, compliance, and innovation in the pursuit of identifying key challenges. The study included a series of interviews with respondents within banking, IT security, and compliance management. This resulted in three principal challenges regarding compliance and innovation within payment services at incumbent banks, along with proposed actions to be taken. Firstly, the necessity of incrementally transitioning from legacy infrastructure towards modernized platforms was established. Secondly, banks are encouraged to make trade-offs between regulations and deploying new products and services. Finally, for banks to engage in communication and collaboration within the organization as well as with regulators can facilitate compliance as well as promoting harmonization of regulations.

Abstract:
Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is a financial service whereby customers defer payment on a purchase against a short-term debt. While BNPL services have a long history, digital invoice services are now the largest market for BNPL. For the study, two of the largest providers in Sweden, and their checkout interfaces were reviewed for dark patterns. Dark patterns are instances where designers exploit the knowledge of human behaviour (e.g., behavioural psychology) and cognition (e.g., cognitive psychology) in order to coerce the customers into performing target actions. For digital invoice services, the target actions are for the customers to select the credit instalments which profits their business model, as a large percentage of their income are from postponed payments. This study employs three research methods to answer the research questions “What existing dark patterns are identified in digital invoice services, and what are the impacts of dark patterns in the context of digital invoice services?”. First, existing dark patterns were identified through a systematic literature review. Second, the resulting dark patterns were applied to an analysis of the two digital invoice services, where ten dark patterns were identified. Finally, an interface of a digital invoice service was designed, prototyped, and evaluated to test the impact of the identified dark patterns in the context of digital invoice services. Analysis suggests that the users are being coerced through design into the target actions, which were selecting the credit instalments (X2 = 5.84, df=1). The results is being further discussed in means of the potential debt users face from dark patterns in financial interfaces.

Abstract:
Digital currencies represent complementary alternatives to fiat money in the conventional mental models of exchange. Blockchain, as the underlying technology of Bitcoin, holds a potential to influence a peer-to-peer exchange in the perspective of trust and ownership. The underlying technologies of digital currencies may be part of concepts, where designers have a possibility to define their own exchange articles for specific needs of the exchange. The ambition of this report is to illustrate the possibilities for the initiation of a peer-to-peer exchange with use of the underlying technologies beyond Bitcoin. The explorative approach provided me material for the retrospective reflection to achieve this ambition. The thesis project consisted three iterations, one experiment, and a literature overview. The main conceptual work illustrates the result of explorative research, where blockchain ensures trust between participating parties. This ecosystem uses the principles of sharing economy for initialisation of exchange within the community. This concept demonstrates potential opportunities for future transactions, in which the exchange article replaces fiat money.

Abstract:
The Near Field Communication (NFC) and mobile payments are two areas in constant development in current market. Today when we use the wallet, we can found cash of different values, coins, debit and credit cards of one or two banks, loyalty cards from restaurants and shopping receipts. Even though these items found in the wallet have a symbolic value of utility, they are becoming outdated, as a plethora of plastic and paper that will not make much sense in the near future. The revolution of mobile payments is imminent and is already happening. Instead of wallets, we have mobile phones with NFC on their hardware and software that transform them into a digital wallet (e-wallet). What matters now are not the papers and cards, but stay connected to your e-wallet account\'s that has your bank details. The main objective of this dissertation is to present the development of a mobile payment system called S-Wallet system, using the technology of NFC. This work also includes the development of a protocol for mobile payments, the protocol SWEP, which performs the whole process of message exchange, data exchange and payment execution. Besides the App S-Wallet, an application interface to android users use. In addition, an account that stores users data remotely, called S-Wallet account. As part of the evaluation of the S-Wallet, we perform tests of integration of all the entities of the system. These tests showed that the S-Wallet provides usability, security and privacy to users. Further, we had performed usability tests with users showing that the S-Wallet system is easy to use and we had indicated it for the real scenario studied: payment between two users, peer-to-peer (P2P) and retail vending. This work shows that the NFC technology is secure for mobile payments and is very useful for its expansion in the commercial sector.

Abstract:
Around the globe, countries move away from banknotes and coins in the favor of digitized payments. A number of findings from academic research conclude various benefits associated with decreased cash usage, such as enhanced economic development, less costs for governments and banks, financial transparency as well as lower economic-related crime rates. In a light of various benefits moving towards cashless payments, it is hypothesized that there also could be a relationship between how innovative a country is and how much cash circulates in economy. The relationship could be both-sided like less cash circulation can trigger innovation and, at the same time, adoption of cashless payments could be driven by how innovative a country is. To be able to investigate a potential correlation, a correlation analysis is conducted between the two variables: an innovation level of a country and cash circulation in econom. The Global Innovation Index score will be used to summarize various factors that provide an overview of national innovation performance, and percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be used for currency in circulation. According to the findings, the hypothesis that there is a correlation between cash circulation and innovation performance in a country could not be rejected with a 5% significance level.

Abstract:
Background: Emerging in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly changed consumer behaviour leading to social distancing and mitigating physical contact. Statistics show an increased use of contactless and mobile payment usage and adoption during the pandemic. It is unclear how valid previous models on mobile payment adoption explain adoption behaviour in emergency situations. While there are few studies approaching the adoption behaviour during the pandemic, there is also little previous research on mobile payment adoption prior to the pandemic in Germany. Purpose: The present thesis intends to advance several previously researched technological adoption frameworks to focus on and measure consumers’ perception of mobile payment technology adopting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, our model provides a basis to understand mobile payment adoption in Germany during the pandemic. Method: Based on hypotheses derived from an adapted UTAUT2 model, we conducted quantitative deductive research reaching 258 questionnaire participants based in Germany. The empirical data was analysed through structural equation modelling. Conclusion: The findings show that Performance Expectancy still represents the primary driver of intention to adopt mobile payments during the pandemic, yet it is strongly supported by the initially contextualised Contamination Avoidance element and complemented by Habit, Effort Expectancy. Practitioners benefit from the study to better tailor campaigns in accordance with the main driver of adoption behaviour, while our findings contribute new insights into technology adoption in Germany during emergency situations.

The rapid evolution of mobile-based technologies and applications has led to the development of several different forms of digital payment methods (DPMs) but with limited enthusiasm in consumers for adopting them. Hence, several academic studies have already been conducted to examine the role of various antecedents that determines consumers’ intention to adopt DPMs. The degree of effect and significance of several antecedents found to be inconsistent across different studies. This provided us a basis for undertaking a meta-analysis of existing research for estimating the cumulative effect of such antecedents. Therefore, this study aims to perform a meta-analysis of five antecedents (i.e. attitude, cost, mobility, price value and innovativeness) for confirming their overall influence on intentions to adopt DPMs. The results of this study suggest that the cumulative effect of four out of five antecedents found to be significant while influence of price value was found insignificant on behavioural intentions. The recommendations drawn from this research would help to decide if and when to use such antecedents for predicting consumer intention to adopt DPMs.

Digital payment methods (DPMs) are evolving fast but they are yet to be widely adopted particularly in the developing countries. An initial review of literature suggests that several studies have already been conducted on this topic for understanding antecedents of digital payments adoption. However, only a few studies have examined this emerging topic in the context of developing countries. The aim of this submission is to identify antecedents of consumer adoption and usage of digital payments methods. The results of this literature analysis suggest that constructs related to technology acceptance model (TAM) and unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) along with trust and risk are the most frequently examined constructs for determining consumer’s behavioural intention to use and usage of DPMs. The findings from this work can help researchers selecting factors for inclusion in the future empirical works on this topic.

Agarwal, Rounak. "A Trusted-Hardware Backed Secure Payments Platform for Android." Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5439.

Abstract:
Digital payments using personal electronic devices have been steadily gaining in popularity for the last few years. While digital payments using smartphones are very convenient, they are also more susceptible to security vulnerabilities. Unlike devices dedicated to the purpose of payments (e.g. POS terminals), modern smartphones provide a large attack surface due to the presence of so many apps for various use cases and a complex feature-rich smartphone OS. Because it is the most popular smartphone OS by a huge margin, Android is the primary target of attackers. Although the security guarantees provided by the Android platform have improved significantly with each new release, we still see new vulnerabilities being reported every month. Vulnerabilities in the underlying Linux kernel are particularly dangerous because of their severe impact on app security. To protect against a compromised kernel, some critical functions of the Android platform such as cryptography and local user authentication have been moved to a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) in the last few releases. But the Android platform does not yet provide a way to protect a user’s confidential input meant for a remote server, or, the server’s confidential output meant for the user, from a compromised kernel. Our work aims to address this gap in Android’s use of TEEs for app security. We have proposed an API that a Trusted App running in a TEE can provide to the untrusted apps running in the REE (Rich Execution Environment). This API will allow app developers to leverage the TEE’s protection for fetching confidential input from and showing confidential output to the user. We have described how this API can be used to implement a secure payment system that can prevent fraudulent transactions even in the presence of a compromised kernel. We have implemented the proposed API on a device with a TEE built on ARM’s TrustZone technology.

Abstract:
Although contactless payments have been widespread around the world, making individual’s life easier and providing advantages within the financial market, they are still considered a modern addition to the current “Financial Transaction Technology” World. The implementation of contactless transactions in Portugal is still at an infancy stage where the adoption rate is considered low as compared to other European countries. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the determinants of the adoption of this new method of payments in Portugal. TAM, UTAUT, IDT and RTA theories were used to contextualize this research’s frameworks. The findings show that all considered factors have a significant effect on consumers’ Behavioural Intention, with Perceived Usefulness and Attitude proving to be the most impactful. The obtained results provide insight into how to promote contactless cards payment, which therefore also keeps stakeholders informed of their likely trajectory and enhances the potential for prospective markets and innovations.

Chen, Yiling. "The impact of digital payments on the velocity of money in the Chinese market." Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/24454.

Full text
Abstract:
To study the impact of digital payments on the velocity of money circulation, this paper selects the velocity of money circulation at the M2 level in the Chinese market from FY2012 to 202112 quarters as the dependent variable, the size of digital payment transactions as the independent variable, and gross national product, inflation rate and opportunity cost of money as control variables. In terms of model selection, since the inflation rate and opportunity cost of money are monthly data, while the transaction size of digital payment and the circulation speed of money at the M2 level are quarterly data, the MIDAS series model is chosen to compare with the traditional OLS model, and it is found that MIDAS-PDL has the best fitting effect and prediction accuracy. Through the empirical results of the MIDAS-PDL model, we find that for the Chinese market, digital payments have a significant positive effect on the velocity of money circulation, in addition, inflation has a significant positive effect on the velocity of money circulation, while the opportunity cost of money has a significant negative effect on the velocity of money circulation.

Cardoso, Sofia Anastácio. "Online payments strategy: how third-party internet seals of approval and payment provider reputation influence the millennial consumers’ online transactions." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/22989.

Full text
Abstract:
With the recent increase in online purchases, organizations have been able to improve their capacity to collect, store and profit from personal and financial data gathering. Online purchases occur in an environment characterized by higher risk levels surrounding the transaction. Several payment strategies can be applied in order to mitigate the consumers’ perceived risk and increase trust levels. The present study intends to understand how the presence of internet seals of approval, and the reputation of the payment provider impacts consumer trust and online payment perceived risk. The study uses four randomized experimental setups to manipulate the independent variables, on a sample size of 324 valid responses, the majority of responses are from people between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. The study results demonstrate that new online vendors can mitigate these variables by investing in a payment strategy that combines the presence of internet seals of approval logos together with the presence of payment providers with low reputation.

Abstract:
Digital wallets are increasingly present in our everyday lives, in which people are able to use them in more and more situations. In China, digital wallets have had a heavy presence for a few years now, offering a wide range of functions, where people can use them in different occasions throughout their day. On the other hand, in Portugal, the use of digital wallets is still developing and the number of functions they offer is still limited. This dissertation analyses and compares digital wallets used in China and Portugal, as well as their functions and the consequent impacts on society and the environment. Moreover, through Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions, there is a search to understand the reasons behind the difference in the pace of adoption of this new technology in China and in Portugal.

Abstract:
Organizations act in very dynamic and rapidly changing environments, wherein they face multiple exogenous shocks that threaten their sustainability and competitive advantage. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that firms continuously adapt and change their strategies to find a fit with the changing environment in order to guarantee survival and remain competitive. Scholars have developed management literature on the importance of strategic change on firm’s alignment with unstable and dynamic environments. Moreover, the Dynamic Capability view, which illustrates how firms can achieve sustainable competitive advantage and cope with the changing ecosystems, has gained increased awareness over the years. In order to demonstrate a real-life example of Strategic Change and the dynamic capabilities' theory in action, this dissertation examines the case of SIBS's digital transformation. The teaching case focuses on SIBS' changing process, strategic reorientation and also examines how, by introducing MB WAY, SIBS coped with the payments industry's dynamism. This case clearly illustrates the firm’s imminent need for strategic change and the importance of the company’s use of dynamic capabilities to successfully adapt to the external environment and enact superior performance.

Yavwa, Yakomba. "The influence of indigenous African culture on SME adoption of digital government services in Zambia." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/26834.

Full text
Abstract:
Many low-income countries desire to implement and adopt digital government as a springboard for economic and social development but face many challenges. The United Nations identifies that Africa has especially lagged consistently in digital government development and adoption. Most scholars largely attribute the challenges to infrastructure and skills, and often rhetorically cite culture as playing a strong role. This study specifically examined the role of indigenous African culture (‘spirituality’, ‘communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’) and internet access on the adoption of digital government services (e-filing and e-payment of taxes) by Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) in Zambia, with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technologies (UTAUT) as the underpinning theoretical lens. Data analysis was done using Structural Equation Modelling with principal attention given to the moderating and mediating influence of indigenous African culture. The influence of internet access on the intention to adopt digital government was also examined. The findings from the cross sectional study of 401 tax registered SMEs suggests that ‘spirituality’, ‘African communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’ have significant negative moderating effects on the adoption of e-filing but not on e-payment; and ‘spirituality’, ‘African communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’ are all significant mediators of the intention to adopt both e-filing and e-payment. This means that indigenous African culture plays a significant role in explaining Africa’s position in digital government development and adoption. The findings also showed a negative influence of internet access on the intention to adopt digital government services despite the measures that government has put in place. These results make a novel contribution to Information Systems (IS) theory in identifying a critical yet often overlooked indigenous cultural influence on the adoption of digital innovations in low-income countries. The findings also calls for finding new or adapted IS theories that take into account such unique cultural constructs. The thesis recommends that the research is extended to other low-income countries as well as other contexts that exhibit strong indigenous cultural values.
