Lewis, Edwin C. "Cost Benefit Analysis of Virginia EFNEP: Calculating Indirect Benefits and Sensitivity Analysis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36867.

Full text
Abstract:
The Cooperative Extension System has focused on nutrition education for low-income families for approximately 29 years via the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). In response to the need for a comprehensive economic evaluation of EFNEP, Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) was awarded a grant from the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Services, United States Department of Agriculture (CSREES, USDA) to conduct a cost benefit analysis (CBA) of nutrition education programs, with emphasis on EFNEP. Virginia EFNEP served as the pilot program to test the evaluation procedure. This study is a part of the CBA of Virginia EFNEP. The purpose is to calculate the indirect tangible benefits derived from participation in EFNEP. The indirect tangible benefits are classified as 1) delaying productivity loss due to mortality and 2) avoiding productivity loss due to morbidity. This study also uses sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effects of two critical assumptions pertaining to retention of dietary behaviors and to incidence rate of diseases in the low-income population. Finally, the discount rate is analyzed via sensitivity calculations. There were two major conclusions drawn from this study. First, the indirect benefits accounted for more than $1 million of the total benefit generate by EFNEP. Second, the sensitivity analyses support the positive outcome (i. e., positive return on every dollar invested) derived from the CBA of Virginia EFNEP.

Urban redevelopment projects involve three parties: (1) the public sector (e.g. public officials), (2) the private sector (e.g. developers), and (3) the community (e.g. residents and community groups). Traditionally, decision-making power in urban redevelopment projects resided between the public and private sectors, with little authority given to communities. The development of Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) were a reaction to this imbalance and have helped communities gain influence in the redevelopment process. These agreements are "legally" binding contracts between a developer and community group(s) - to ensure that development projects benefit local community residents. Their creation is rooted in several decades of failed urban policies and the public learning that has taken place since Urban Renewal. CBAs first appeared in Los Angeles in 2001 and have since taken root across the country in such geographically diverse places as Denver, Milwaukee, and New York City. These agreements represent a significant evolution in collective bargaining, the ability of varied entities to come together and take a common position on a topic, and the ability of communities to secure benefits from developers. This thesis examines why these agreements came into existence, the process by which they are implemented, and how they have been employed. It will look at how these agreements have created greater overall value for all three sectors involved in publicly subsidized redevelopment projects and how to improve upon the community benefits negotiation process.

Abstract:
Homework is and has been an integral part of school for many years. However, in the last few years, some professionals have begun to question whether or not homework should be a part of school or not. Opinions vary greatly on this position. Some have even gone on to claim that it is unwarranted and even detrimental to students’ education. Others mean that it is an absolute necessity. This dissertation is an investigation of the viewpoints on the rationale for homework of 6 teachers of English at junior high level. In order to gain insight to their views, qualitative interviews were utilized. The results show that each of the consulted educators of English utilizes homework as a learning tool in their teaching. The purpose of assigning homework is that it fills the function of giving the students the opportunity to review, to take responsibility in keeping a schedule, planning and for their education, and to train in studying. I have come to the conclusion that if students are to be assigned homework, it is imperative that the homework is interesting for them and that the pupils see it as something that will promote their development in the subject.

Abstract:
This thesis is aimed on fringe benefits which are very popular part of employee's remuneration these days. The supply of benefits is very wide and it depends on the employer what he chooses. It is important to take into consideration what influence the benefits have on employees' satisfaction and what are their tax impacts. The objective of this thesis is to consider all mentioned aspects and to analyse the system of fringe benefits in the company Murr CZ s.r.o. For analysis of the present employee's satisfaction with the system, questionnaire method was used. Then some changes were recommended which could improve the benefit system regarding satisfaction and also regarding tax impacts. The employees could be divided into two groups according their position in the company. First one would be management and the second one would be team leaders and workers. Following this concept the company could adapt benefits with regard to specifics of each group. The company should think over the new benefits including pension insurance contribution and the alternative between transport allowances and culture or sport vouchers.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three articles on social assistance benefit receipt dynamics in European countries. The first article presents an analysis of state dependence in benefit receipt in Germany based on annual survey data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. The observation period extends from 1995 to 2011, thus covering the 2005 'Hartz reforms'. I estimate a series of dynamic random-effects probit models to control for observed and unobserved heterogeneity and the endogeneity of initial conditions. The high observed state dependence has a substantial structural component, with benefit receipt one year ago being associated with an increase in the likelihood of receipt today by 13 percentage points. There is only little evidence for time-variation in state dependence. The second article presents evidence on spell durations and the frequency of repeat spells using monthly administrative data from Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. In the two Nordic countries, short-term benefit receipt is the norm, with only around 6% and 11% of spells in Norway and Sweden lasting longer than 12 months. Most recipients however have multiple spells. In Luxembourg and the Netherlands, long-term benefit receipt is frequent, with median spell durations of 14 and 9 months, respectively, and one-third and one-quarter of all spells lasting 24 months or longer. The total duration of benefit receipt across spells is much higher in the Netherlands and Luxembourg than in Norway and Sweden. The third article tests the validity of one of the central assumptions of dynamic discrete-choice models of benefit dynamics, the conditional Markov property. Using monthly administrative data from Norway, the article shows that the Markov property is violated as estimated state dependence is affected by the chosen time unit of analysis. The standard model can be improved by permitting for different entry and persistence equations and duration and occurrence dependence in benefit receipt.

Across the United States, conflicts often erupt when large-scale real estate development projects are proposed and executed in low-income neighborhoods of large cities. Communities increasingly ask for benefits to offset negative impacts caused by new development. These requests often take the form of negotiated contracts called Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs). CBAs are the subject of some debate, especially as regards their effectiveness, legality, and fairness. Community groups, developers, and city officials all have different views on this topic. In this thesis, the CBA debate is examined in light of five New York City-based case studies involving controversial benefits negotiations. While CBAs can lead to greater benefits for some communities, the ad hoc nature of the agreements and the ways in which they are negotiated pose serious risks. I offer a new process for managing public benefits negotiations.

Abstract:
While fringe benefits create value in the employer-employee relationship, implicitly subsidized fringe ben-efits risk incurring economic deadweight losses. An increasingly common fringe benefit in Europe is the company car. Literature has showed how fringe benefits should be taxed for tax neutrality yet current taxations of fringe benefits cars in Europe have been found to cause significant deadweight losses. The prevalence of fringe benefits cars in Europe generally and Sweden specifically renders it relevant to in-vestigate how the taxation of fringe benefits cars affect economic welfare. Fringe benefits cars are also of interest for policy evaluations, both in their provision as fringe benefits in terms of equity as well as a means of transportation and climate change mitigation. Sweden has committed to ambitious GHG emission policy goals which directly relates the composition of the Swedish (company) car fleet. The thesis methodology was based on a Dutch framework for welfare equations and statistical methods such as regression analysis. Interviews were conducted with industry professionals to gain market insights and perspectives in the case of company cars. A deadweight loss was found as SEK 2 300 per fringe benefits car and the total market deadweight loss was estimated to SEK 186 million. The automobile market gives rise to many externalities and some fringe benefits car related were quantified. Internalizing a conservative externality estimate yields additional deadweight losses at SEK 425 per fringe benefits car. Many socioeconomic factors were found to be correlated with car expenditure, most of them positively: household income, age and a managerial like position. Gender as in female had a negative effect on car expenditure. The current taxation of fringe benefits cars (2014) is potentially problematic for Swedish policy goals concerning traffic safety, climate change and gender equity for three reasons. The current taxation of fringe benefits cars: (1) might have negative safety implications from a system perspective on traffic safety, (2) does not necessarily promote more environmental friendly cars on average and (3) is not gender neutral as women as a group has a statistically lower preference for expensive cars.

Abstract:
Today, with various technology and business standards, organizations face rapid changes in both internal and external environments. To be able to rapidly respond to such changing environments, integration of software systems has entered among the top priorities of many organizations. However, despite extended use of software integration, methods for estimating the business value of implementing such integration are still missing. Besides presenting a conceptual model to define the benefits of systems integration and related causal relationships, this study proposes a method for measuring such benefits in monetary terms. In particular, we  demonstrate how a mathematical programming technique called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be used to evaluate the business value of software integration. Our method is illustrated using data from 12 organizations. The results indicate significant productivity gains by integrating software systems, which represent the value of software integration in organizations.

Abstract:
Modern culture has not yet learned to live in harmony with the rest of the natural world. This is largely because we are afflicted with inadequate institutions and personal habits. These habits and institutions are also responsible for many social ills sexism, homophobia, etc. In particular, the imperium is a way of thinking and acting which encourages us to practice a heavy-handed form of standardization; it encourages us to ignore particularity. These habits and institutions the imperium are a result of, and reinforced by, our interpersonal interactions. The standardization of these interactions drains the wildness out of them. But to relate to an other in an ethical manner, I must assume that the other is wild, with its own integrity, will, and path. Because our experiences in wilderness are radically different than our experiences outside wilderness, the wilderness can instill in us different, better habits and understanding of relationships. In particular, the wildness of wilderness shows us the falseness of the standardized ideas and beliefs. This wildness also causes us to forge new habits of relating to others, and new beliefs about relationships and others. These new habits are social benefits, especially once we allow them to reform our identity.

Abstract:
MBA Professional Report
We explore whether benefits are being realized in RFID initiatives that are not being captured by traditional Return on Investment analysis. Utilizing the Naval Supply System Report, which found RFID technology does not create a positive ROI, we surveyed the participants to find benefits they received that were not addressed. 100% of the participants reported increased customer knowledge and increased timeliness of information. While this finding may not be enough to support the implementation of new technologies, it at least supports the idea that the new technologies do have real benefits. This report is therefore intended as a tool to be used by the Navy in addressing the idea that traditional ROI does not capture these intangible benefits. We acknowledge the fact that further study of this important issue is needed.

Abstract:

How does the expansion of social protection programs to the poor in developing democracies affect social cohesion? I address this question by examining Bolivia's central government run, non-contributory pension program, Renta Dignidad. Using a regression discontinuity design as well as a novel difference-in-discontinuities design, I find that recipients of pension benefits are overall more likely to display increased support for the central government and that in provinces where both territorial tensions and class tensions are most acute, support for the central government is significantly greater. This is consistent with a theoretical argument that expansion of social protection to the poor can mitigate opposition on active dimensions of social conflict that intersect the socio-economic dimension.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of the researcher this study was to determine what, if any, unexpected benefits, spin-offs, and other "serendipitous" events occurred as a result of the year 2000 remediation process undertaken by businesses, industry, and other organizations. This was measured through the use of an online survey instrument comprised of a series of questions designed to measure and discover those benefits. The survey was sent to approximately 50 different businesses/organizations during the pilot stage of this study and 250 during the main stage of this study. These businesses/organizations were randomly selected from the sampling frame using random sampling techniques. The random samples that were used included the areas of financial services, health care, non-computer manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, and utilities. The survey responses were analyzed in an effort to determine what benefits were common to these businesses as well as to discover possible unique benefits some business may have experienced. Of particular interest were any benefits that companies indicate were totally unexpected or serendipitous. Final analysis of the data was accomplished through the use of canonical correlation. This statistical procedure was chosen because of its usefulness in determining correlations between a set of independent variables and a set of dependent variables. The findings of the pilot study were, for the most part, inconclusive due to the small number of responses. The analysis of the data from the main study resulted in one significant canonical function. The canonical correlation between the computer generated variates created by this function was reported at approximately .86. This indicates a high degree of correlation between criterion variate I that represented the independent variables, and is the predictor variate I that represented the dependent variables. The variables PCSYS, NTSYS, MFSYS had the highest correlation with the Predictor I variate. The variables ITISS, A W AREMIA, and A WAREBF had the highest correlation with the Criterion I variate. Therefore, the independent variables PCSYS, NTSYS, and MFSYS were most predictive of the dependent variables ITISS, AWAREMIA, and AWAREBF. To determine if there were unexpected benefits in those companies surveyed, a multiple regression was performed using the measured variable "SEREDIP" as the dependent variable and the measured variables Y2KEFFORT, ORGSP, and ORGHM as the independent variables. The null hypothesis was not rejected indicating that among the companies surveyed, the occurrences of serendipitous events were not statistically significant. However, the literature indicated that serendipitous events have occurred, although these occurrences were not universal.

Abstract:
Any conference or round-table discussion aims to elicit a student's language behaviour. These activities are needed both by teachers and students to know how well somebody else uses foreign languages in free speaking activities and how much a student needs to master his own speaking abilities. Moreover, extracurricular activities aim to answer why they learn foreign languages. From the first-year students to postgraduates with more academic and professional ambitious there is one thing they have in common – through learning foreign languages they hope to achieve a goal to improve future professional opportunities.

Goad, David Douglas. "Barriers to IoT Benefits Realization." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24520.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is often referred to as one of the key technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Along with the three industrial revolutions before it, this current industrial revolution promises to be disruptive, changing how we live our lives and run our organizations. Yet, while the IoT has demonstrated great promise, it will underperform in terms of expected adoption and resultant benefits realization compared to initially overly optimistic industry forecasts. This is partly due to several barriers to implementing IoT based solutions that inhibit, reduce, or slow the realization of the intended benefits. In this research thesis, I identify and then analyze several of the barriers to IoT benefits realization. These include issues related to IoT architectural heterogeneity, the challenges with securing the IoT, the reduction in privacy that the IoT creates and the resultant regulatory burden and the need for new business models to realize the value that the IoT can create. For each identified barrier I look to contribute to the literature by furthering understanding of that phenomena in question and/or by exploring potential solutions to improve benefits realization. Adopting a “Thesis including Publications” approach the analysis of each barrier is presented in a separate self-contained research paper with four papers presented in total. Two of these research papers (on IoT Architecture and Privacy) have been published and a further two (on IoT Security and Business Models) have been submitted for publication.

Mogolola, Prudence Bafedile. "Exploring the benefits of inter-firm collaboration : how institutional voids shape the benefits of collaboration." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/22771.

Full text
Abstract:
Institutional voids are increasingly gaining precedence and research attention due to the increased participation of developing countries in global markets (Mair&Marti, 2009). This theory focuses on the identification of weaknesses in institutions and how these voids result in ineffective functioning of emerging markets (Mair&Marti, 2009). In this study, focus is on collaboration as a strategy used by the emerging markets to overcome the absence of institutional and regulatory frameworks, prevalent in their capital, labour and product markets.Forty (40) South African small-medium enterprises were analysed to determine what the priority collaborative benefits are for firms operating in the emerging market context. The research shows that in emerging markets, collaboration benefits are based on a need to overcome institutional voids i.e. to reduce the costs and risks associated with weak institutions.

Kanya, Gladys Lucy Wanjiru. "Investigating the criterion validity of contingent valuation-willingness to pay methods." Thesis, Brunel University, 2018. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/17210.

Full text
Abstract:
With theoretical foundations in welfare theory, the cost benefit analysis (CBA) technique is a powerful tool for assessing benefits particularly where markets do not exist or would fail (for example due to the existence of public goods) or have become potentially politically excluded (such as the health sector). Unlike other economic evaluation techniques, costs and benefits are measured in monetary terms allowing for comparisons within and between different sectors of the economy for resource allocation decisions. Using contingent valuation (CV) techniques, people's preferences for goods are determined by finding out what they would be willing to pay (WTP) for specified benefits or improvements; or accept (WTA), as compensation for withdrawal or loss of benefit. While the use of WTP methods has grown in other sectors, the uptake in health has been limited. A long-standing criticism is that stated WTP estimates may be poor indicators of actual WTP, calling into question their validity and the use of such estimates for welfare valuation. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the criterion validity of CV-WTP studies. A four-pronged approach including critical appraisals of the available literature and evidence on criterion validity and empirical analyses was adopted. The thesis established the scarcity in criterion validity assessments, particularly in the health sector and that evidence on the criterion validity of CV-WTP is more varied than authors are presenting. The variety in the methods used to assess and report criterion validity assessments is demonstrated. Further, the impact of the analysis of hypothetical WTP on criterion validity assessments and conclusions thereof is demonstrated. The empirical analyses further demonstrate the differences in predictions and predictors of WTP analyses, discussing the effect of these on criterion validity assessments and conclusions. Finally, the thesis offers suggestions for the reporting of criterion validity assessments, in efforts to improve the method.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis is about renumeration employees in the context of motivation, evaluation and benefits applied in a financial institucion, as one of possible ways of motivating them. Motivation is the moving power of any human activity and if an employer wishes to maintain high performance of his employees, he needs to be concerned with multitude of different ways of motivating and stimulating them. Complexity of processes is that, people have different needs, goals and ways of reaching them and this results in considerable complexity of motivational process. The theoretical part is anchored aspects and rules, including an analysis of contemporary remuneration. Furthermore, the paper deals with the comparison of contemporary and proposed method of remuneration. In the final part of the thesis is applied to a specific strategy of a new method of remuneration based on the survey.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the tax effects of various forms of remuneration, with a focus on employee benefits. The thesis is structured into three chapters. In the first chapter there is a definition of labor law relationship, it's participants, rewards and demands that are placed on them. An extensive part describes employee benefits, it's legislative regulation, classification and trends in this area. The second chapter describes taxation of income from employment and compulsory contributions to social and health insurance systems. There is also a description of tax and contribution liability of employee benefits. The third chapter attends to the description of employee benefits in ČSOB Pojišťovna, a.s. and analyses the impact of replacement these employee benefits with monetary income by employees with different level and structure of total gross income. This replacement reduces the total net income by all employees and the specific impact depends on the factors that affect the tax burden. It is influenced by various structural elements of tax or insurance and the rations of income to which they are applied (ie exemption or taxation).

Wickstead, Frank Anthony. "Quantifying the benefits of greywater systems." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39626.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a decision support framework to establish the economic feasibility associated with considering the installation of a greywater system. Because of the potential dangers and lack of widespread knowledge of greywater systems, the study begins by providing an explanation of current greywater technology to include the history of the technology, an explanation of greywater as opposed to reclaimed water, the potential risks of greywater use, and the necessary components of a greywater system. This decision support framework can be used with any scale of greywater system to be installed within any scale of facility. The example of an typical Atlanta, Georgia, USA multifamily rental development is used within the study to explain the framework by showing a working model. The need for water conservation in Georgia is shown and how greywater use dovetails with the need to lower overall usage. The legality of greywater use in Georgia along with the specific legal uses is also shown. The findings are then made State of Georgia and use specific to a multifamily development. The decision support framework provided is a viable tool. The sample framework in chapter 5 shows that the implementation of a greywater unit in the sampled facility would save 5,060,739.6 gallons of potable water per year with a 10.49 year payback cycle.
