Abstract:
Carbon capture and storage technologies are necessary to start lowering greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to utilize existing thermal power generation infrastructure. Calcium looping is a promising technology based on cyclic calcination/carbonation reactions which utilizes limestone as a sorbent. Steam is present in combustion flue gas and in the calciner used for sorbent regeneration. The effect of steam during calcination on sorbent performance has not been extensively studied in the literature. Here, experiments were conducted using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and subsequently a dual-fluidized bed pilot plant to determine the effect of steam injection during calcination on sorbent reactivity during carbonation. In a TGA, various levels of steam (0-40% vol.) were injected during sorbent regeneration throughout 15 calcination/carbonation cycles. All concentrations of steam were found to increase sorbent reactivity during carbonation. A level of 15% steam during calcination had the largest impact. Steam changes the morphology of the sorbent during calcination, likely by shifting the pore volume to larger pores, resulting in a structure which has an increased carrying capacity. This effect was then examined at the pilot scale to determine if the phase contacting patterns and solids heat-up rates in a fluidized bed were factors. Three levels of steam (0%, 15%, 65%) were injected during sorbent regeneration throughout 5 hours of steady state operation. Again, all levels of steam were found to increase sorbent reactivity and reduce the required sorbent make-up rate with the best performance seen at 65% steam.

Abstract:
The design and manufacture of lightweight electric vehicles is becoming increasingly important with the rising cost of petrol, and the effects emissions from petrol powered vehicles are having on our environment. The University of Waikato and HybridAuto's Ultracommuter electric vehicle was designed, manufactured, and tested. The vehicle has been driven over 1800km with only a small reliability issue, indicating that the Ultracommuter was well designed and could potentially be manufactured as a solution to ongoing transportation issues. The use of titanium aluminide components in the automotive industry was researched. While it only has half the density of alloy steel, titanium aluminides have the same strength and stiffness as steel, along with good corrosion resistance, making them suitable as a lightweight replacement for steel components. Automotive applications identified that could benefit from the use of TiAl include brake callipers, brake rotors and electric motor components.

Mercedes-Benz Symphony describes a vision for Mercedes-Benz Design inspired by music. The inspirational and experimental nature of the project serves the purpose of inspiring people and creating a connection between Music and Automotive Design. Placing the focus on the creative process of experimentation with the transition from an audible to visual experience the ob- server is introduced to a fabulous journey of design perception. The result of this research is illustrated by an automotive form study following this design philosophy. The complexity of the front of the car visualises the introductory beginning of a musical piece with various instruments, rhythmi- cal patterns and melodies. The side is kept solid and sculptural as a song progresses it will be experienced as an exciting whole. The rear end represents the conclusive statement, with quota- tions from previous elements. The vehicle itself becomes a mu- sical piece.

Abstract:
Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse concernent le développement d’un procédé de stockage d’énergie thermique haute température par voie thermochimique en vue d’une application dans une centrale solaire à concentration. Un état de l’art des technologies de stockage d’énergie thermique haute température par voie thermochimique a permis de définir le couple réactionnel et la technologie les mieux adaptés au procédé. Ainsi, la réaction réversible Ca(OH)2(s) = CaO(s) + H2O(g) est mise en oeuvre dans un réacteur à lit fluidisé. Une étude expérimentale a permis de démontrer la faisabilité du procédé en stockant et en déstockant l’énergie à une même température et en mettant en oeuvre 50 cycles de charge/décharge de l’énergie sans perte de réversibilité. L’utilisation d’un modèle monodimensionnel couplant les phénomènes chimiques, thermiques et hydrodynamiques à l’intérieur du réacteur a permis de mettre en évidence l’influence des conditions opératoires sur les performances du système. Les premiers pas vers une extrapolation industrielle font l’objet de la dernière partie de ces travaux, en présentant l’analyse énergétique d’une centrale solaire à concentration intégrant le procédé de stockage développé et en présentant une étude expérimentale mettant en oeuvre un solide de type industriel dans le réacteur.

Resumo: Stringer (1989) sugeriu que um leito fluidizado gás-sólido pode ser um sistema caótico no qual seu comportamento irregular, entretanto determinístico, é causado por suas propriedades não-lineares. Desde então, surgiu uma nova forma de analisar flutuações de sinais em sistemas fluidizados: a análise não linear de séries temporais, comumente referida como análise de caos. A análise de caos é uma técnica muito utilizada no processamento de sinais em sistemas fluidizados, porém pouco difundida a nível nacional. Este tipo de análise baseia-se na reconstrução de atratores imersos em um espaço de fase e no estudo das propriedades deste atrator. Nesta Tese de Doutorado, avalia-se o comportamento fluidodinâmico em leito fluidizado circulante (LFC) operando sob condição de transporte pneumático diluído utilizando a análise de caos e também outras análises no domínio do tempo, como a distribuição de frequência e desvio médio absoluto. Os sinais avaliados foram obtidos por uma sonda de fibras ópticas, gerando séries temporais de flutuação de sinais elétricos que representam concentração de sólidos. A análise de caos demonstrou que os sistemas estudados apresentam comportamento caótico, por apresentar entropia de Kolmogorov positiva para todas as situações. A vantagem deste tipo de análise em comparação com as ferramentas usuais no domínio do tempo e no domínio da frequência (espectro de Fourier) é que a mesma considera o comportamento não-linear que existe neste tipo de reator multifásico. A partir de seus resultados, pôde-se descrever detalhadamente a fluidodinâmica do LFC, permitindo relacionar os parâmetros encontrados com fenômenos físicos como formação e repartição de clusters, turbulência do gás, interações partícula-partícula e partícula-parede e má alimentação. Tal análise permitiu, inclusive, a identificação de três regimes distintos: diluído, resultante de um escoamento mais complexo devido à turbulência da fase gasosa; concentrado, onde a presença de clusters diminui o caminho médio das partículas e por conseqüência reduz o grau de complexidade do sistema; e um terceiro regime ainda não publicado em trabalhos anteriores, referente às condições extremamente diluídas, onde o aumento do fluxo de sólidos provocou o aumento da complexidade. Neste regime, a fase gasosa predomina e o escoamento é mais previsível quando há presença de poucas partículas. Pretende-se, com esta Tese de Doutorado, incentivar a utilização deste método para, pelo menos, servir como complementação da técnica usualmente utilizada na análise de sinais nesta área de pesquisa, que são os espectros de potência de Fourier
Abstract: Stringer (1989) was the first to suggest that a gas-solid fluidized bed may be a chaotic system, in which the irregular, yet deterministic, behavior is caused by its nonlinear properties. Since then, another way to analyze signals fluctuations in fluidized systems came to light: the nonlinear time series analysis commonly referred to as chaos analysis. It is a technique widely used in the signal analysis in fluidized systems, but not very common at national level. This type of analysis is based on the reconstruction of attractors embedded in a phase space and the study of the properties of this attractor. This Ph.D. Thesis evaluates the fluid dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) operating under conditions of dilute pneumatic conveying using chaos analysis of chaos and also further analysis in the time domain. The signals obtained were measured by an optical fiber probe which generated time series of fluctuating electrical signals representing solids concentration. The chaos analysis showed that the systems studied exhibit chaotic behavior, by having positive Kolmogorov entropy for all situations. The advantage of this type of analysis compared with the usual tools in the time domain and frequency domain (Fourier spectrum) is that it considers the nonlinear behavior that exists in this type of multiphase reactor. From their results, it was possible to describe in detail the fluid dynamics of the CFB, allowing correlating the parameters found with physical phenomena such as cluster formation and breakdown, the gas turbulence, particle-particle and particle-wall interactions and feed maldistribution. This analysis has led to the identification of three distinct regimes: diluted, resulted from a more complex flow due to turbulence of the gas phase; concentrated, where the presence of clusters decreases the average path length of particles and consequently reduces the complexity of the system; and a third regime not yet published in previous works, regarding the extremely dilute conditions, where the increased flow of solids caused the increase in complexity. In this condition, the gas phase and the predominant flow is more predictable when there is presence of a few particles. With this Ph.D. Thesis, it is intended to encourage the use of this method for at least as a complement to the technique usually used in signal analysis in this research area, that is, the Fourier power spectra

À medida que consumidores aprendem a usar um novo bem durável, seu interesse no produto pode mudar. Em algumas situações, eles descobrem novas aplicações e benefícios inesperados. Em outras situações, eles experimentam decrescente interesse em melhorias nos produtos. Estas mudanças nas preferências podem afetar o marketing mix ótimo da empresa responsável pelo produto. Esta tese desenvolve um modelo para examinar como a dinâmica das preferências dos consumidores, resultante de compras passadas, impacta o preço e qualidade ótimos para um monopolista maximizador de lucro. O foco deste trabalho é em recompras voluntárias (i.e., compradores podem postergar a compra de uma reposição se assim o desejarem) e em consumidores que, ao recomprar, exigem que o produto ofertado tenha qualidade superior aos produtos que já possuem. Utilizando simulação multi-período, esta tese explora o impacto de três regimes de mudança nas preferências dos consumidores: crescente, decrescente e em forma de U (habituação e sensitização). Este trabalho analisa separadamente como mudanças na sensibilidade ao preço e na sensibilidade à qualidade afetam elementos do marketing mix ótimo. Os resultados fornecem uma série de contribuições à literatura de bens duráveis. Primeiro, eles ilustram o impacto da dinâmica das preferências dos consumidores na empresa e na tradicional Conjectura de Coase. Segundo, esta tese mostra que o fenômeno de performance oversupply, descrito na literatura sobre tecnologias disruptivas, pode ser explicado através da evolução das preferências dos consumidores. Terceiro, esta pesquisa estende a literatura sobre habituação e sensitização para a situação onde o marketing mix é endógeno.

Bed bugs were once considered eliminated from the United States, so recent resurgence of this pest has been cause for concern. Presence of these troublesome insects has resulted in the proposal of controversial policies. For example, the state of Ohio petitioned the EPA for a FIFRA Section 18 emergency exemption to use the insecticide propoxur, a neurotoxin, to treat bed bug infestations in the state. In this thesis, I analyzed public comments for the exemption, task force reports, and media to examine how health and the urban indoor environment are framed in this decision-making process. Though bed bugs carry stigma, those who have them are not overtly blamed for the pest. However, an inability to eliminate them effectively is situated as a lack of personal responsibility. A political ecology of health analysis and healthism are used to understand how narratives of health and personal responsibility justify use of this pesticide.

Ein Schlüsselereignis der Kardiogenese ist die Bildung eines Herzlumens, durch das die Hämolymphe gepumpt wird, um Nährstoffe und Zellen des angeborenen Immunsystems zu zirkulieren. Ein Schwerpunkt meiner Arbeit umfasste die Identifizierung neuer Gene, die im embryonalen Dorsalgefäß von Drosophila exprimiert sind. Dafür habe ich die Expression von 101 Genen, deren Orthologe spezifisch im Herzen von Zebrafisch exprimiert sind, in Drosophila untersucht. Ich identifizierte ein Gen, das für das Cbl-assoziierte Protein (CAP) kodiert. Durch Herstellung eines anti-CAP Antikörpers konnte ich erstmals eine detaillierte Lokalisation des CAP-Proteins im Dorsalgefäß beschreiben. Interessanterweise stellte sich dabei heraus, dass CAP ähnlich wie die homologen Vertebraten Proteine embryonal an den fokalen Adhäsionskontakten der Kardioblasten und im adulten Dorsalgefäß auch an den Z-Scheiben und den Zell-Zell-Kontaktstellen der Kardiomyozyten lokalisiert ist. Des Weiteren untersuchte ich, welche Auswirkungen der Verlust der CAP Funktion auf die Herzentwicklung hat. Für die Analyse der CAP-Mutanten nutzte ich neben Immunhistochemischen Methoden auch ultrastrukturelle Analysen mittels TEM-Mikroskopie. So konnte ich zeigen, dass embryonale Dorsalgefäße von CAP-Mutanten eine fehlerhafte Anzahl sowie Anordnung der Kardioblasten und Lumendefekte aufweisen. Ein genetischer Interaktionstest untermauerte meine Vermutung, dass CAP mit dem Integrinsignalweg während der embryonalen Dorsalgefäßentwicklung interagiert. Live-Aufnahmen des pumpenden Dorsalgefäßes von Drosophila L3-Larven und Injektionstests an späten Puppen zeigten zudem, dass der Verlust der CAP Funktion auch zu starken Defekten in der Funktionalität des larvalen und adulten Dorsalgefäßes führt.
The heart of Drosophila provides a valuable model system for the examination of the genetic and molecular mechanisms that guide cardiogenesis. A key event of cardiogenesis is the formation of a heart lumen through which the hemolymph is pumped to circulate nutrients and cells of the innate immune system. A main focus of my work was the identification of new genes that are expressed in the embryonic heart of Drosophila. Therefore I studied the expression of 101 genes, whose orthologues are expressed specifically in the heart of zebrafish. I identified a gene that encodes for the Cbl-associated protein (CAP). By generating an anti-CAP antibody I could describe the localization of the CAP protein in the heart for the first time in detail. Interestingly, it turned out that CAP is located similar to the homologous vertebrate proteins at the focal adhesion contacts of cardioblasts in the embryo and at the Z-discs and the cell-cell contact sites of cardiomyocytes in the adult heart. I also examined the consequences of the loss of CAP function on heart development. For the analysis of the CAP mutants I used immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis by TEM microscopy. So I was able to demonstrate that embryonic hearts of CAP mutants show a defective number and arrangement of cardioblasts and lumen defects. A genetic interaction test substantiated my guess that CAP interacts with the Integrin signaling pathway during embryonic heart development. Live recordings of the pumping heart of Drosophila L3 larvae and injection tests of late pupae also showed that the loss of CAP function leads to severe defects in the functionality of the larval and adult heart.

Brazil is the country with the second-largest number of cataloged bee species in the world, about 2,000. Among these we have stingless bees, with around 250 different species; these live in society, produce honey, and unlike the European Apis Mellifera, do not sting. Sadly, most Brazilians only know of the existence of a single bee species, which is the invasive European bee. Native bees are not only the most important pollinators of our native flora but are also part of an intricate and fragile web of life that is currently under threat. For each bee species that go extinct, there are far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem it belongs to, therefore it’s imperative to protect and care for our native bees.In this project, I've worked alongside the Terra Mirim foundation. I’ve compiled information on native bees, their biology, the native history of beekeeping, societal behavior, their importance, risks, etc. I started this work in collaboration with Terra Mirim, a foundation that works on the recovery of the Atlantic Forest and has over 60 native beehives under their care, they also receive many visitors throughout the year who are looking for closer contact with nature. I believe awareness, knowledge, and proximity are important starting points for developing empathy towards other forms of life, so along with the photographs I’ve been taking, I am transforming the information I compiled into signboards to promote awareness among Terra Mirim’s visitors.

O presente trabalho expõe as actividades desenvolvidas com a colecção de bens móveis integrantes do Conjunto Arqueológico de Carmona (CAC), no âmbito de estágio curricular do Mestrado em Conservação e Restauro de Património Móvel. Teve como objectivos a identificação e levantamento do estado de conservação da colecção, bem como revisão das condições de acondicionamento de modo a definir os níveis de necessidade de intervenção e avaliação de uma possível valorização da colecção ou parte desta. Numa primeira parte é feito um breve enquadramento do CAC e de reconhecimento do espólio que alberga, revendo o sistema de inventário e de acondicionamento existentes. Em seguida são descritas as actividades desenvolvidas que passaram por um transporte e recuperação de bens móveis ao CAC que se encontravam no Museu Arqueológico de Sevilha (MAS), reorganização das reservas da instituição e criação de um sistema de inventário dos bens móveis. O espólio do CAC é composto por um conjunto de bens de uso quotidiano e de rituais funerários, em diversos materiais como materiais cerâmicos, pétreos, vítreos, metais, ósseos e pintura mural. Comporta cerca de 3500 registos de entrada, em geral de objectos completos e em bom estado de conservação.

The work deals with the analysis of a marketing campaign to place the new Mercedes A class on the market. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate marketing communication and propose its improvement. This aim is based on the analysis results of marketing communications and marketing research's results. The theoretical part is focused on the theory of marketing communication, and situational analysis. In the introduction of the practical part of my thesis I deal with automotive market and the closer description of cars Mercedes Benz Class A. There is also elaborated situational analysis and analysis of marketing communication. Through survey I try to verify the achievement of the marketing communication and determine what changes causes communication in awareness, knowledge, attitudes and purchase intentions of the target group.
