Abstract:
Early in his career Maurice Ravel composed two pieces that take bells as their subject: “Entre Cloches” from Sites auriculaires, composed in 1897, and “La vallée des cloches,” the final movement of the 1905 work Miroirs. Although these pieces can be contextualized within a nineteenth-century lineage of French piano pieces that depict bell peals, they also set themselves apart by virtue of their heightened attention to the particularities of bell sonorities. Relying heavily on repetitive ostinato patterns, quartal harmonies, and intense dissonances, these pieces play in the nebulous space between transcription and composition. Ravel’s experimentation with bell sonorities in his piano music can be understood in relation to a broader discourse surrounding the sound of bells in nineteenth-century France. A complex sonic object, bell resonance lent itself to different modes of listening: the harmoniousness of bell peals was a common refrain among romantic poets, Catholic clergy, and campanarian historians, but toward the end of the century it became increasingly common for physicists and popular-science publications to complain that bells were inherently discordant. In this context Ravel’s depictions of bells in “Entre cloches” and “La vallée des cloches” suggest a shift in the place of musical listening in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century cultures of aurality. Ravel’s musical listening entailed heightened attentiveness to the empirical qualities of non-musical sound; his pieces negotiate in new ways the boundary between musical composition and the protean sonic world outside of music. This reorientation of musical listening participates in a broader questioning by early twentieth-century modernists of the nature of music and its sonic material.

Abstract:
Modern digital computation techniques have made it possible to compute a base profile for a bell so that it will have some particular, predetermined eigenfrequencies. Practice has shown that with a combination of these modern techniques and the traditional skills of an experienced bell founder, a carillon bell can be made that contains an unconventional "major-third" partial and is in other respects at least as well-tuned as traditional carillon bells of high quality. An experimental movable carillon with 47 major-third bells was built and was found to be aurally quite distinguishable from a conventional carillon of comparable size. Criticizm on this new instrument comes mostly from professional carillonneurs, whereas other musicians or nonmusicians react generally in a positive way.

Abstract:
This project seeks to unravel the opulent acoustical characteristics and sonic effects of ancient Chinese chime bells. Initially, distinctive features of the chime bells are encapsulated, highlighting the bifonic phenomenon and elucidating the role of fundamental and harmonic frequencies in chime bell sound production, while emphasizing the timbral diversity attributable to its multifrequency sound source. An exploration into the impacts of various factors on chime bell sound, such striking position, is conducted through experimentation with a bronze chime bell model, underscoring their significant influence. Employing experimental modal analysis methods, vibrational modes of the chime bell surface at disparate frequencies are revealed, laying a foundation for understanding the sound production principles. Furthermore, image processing technologies are utilized to construct a 3D model of the chime bell, and finite element modal analysis methods are applied to visualize its modes. The feasibility of using a circular ring to simulate chime bell sound is explored, identifying the elliptical ring as a more promising option and undergoing numerous rounds of iterative optimization. The theoretical research is brought to fruition by manufacturing a cast iron elliptical ring model for striking experiments, thereby validating the theoretical insights. In summation, this research provides a comprehensive and systematic exploration into the acoustical mechanisms and design principles of chime bells, offering invaluable insights into ancient Chinese music and cultural heritage. The multi-faceted and rich nature of chime bells as musical instruments is unveiled through the integrated application of various methods, deepening the understanding of their acoustical characteristics.

Editors of the Special Issue on music technology and popular music education, adam patrick bell and Leila Adu-Gilmore, discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd on global society to contextualize the period in which the articles in the issue were written. They suggest that popular music education can be a vehicle to examine inclusive musical practices. bell and Adu-Gilmore detail that in their original call for papers they wanted to avoid defining the term ‘music technology’ with the hope that authors would interpret and define music technology in diverse and/or new ways. They remark that the Special Issue is appropriately eclectic and reflective of how music technology is perceived and practised at present in popular music education contexts, and then provide a brief overview of the seven articles that comprise the Special Issue.

This article describes the design of the profile for a major-third bell using structural optimization strategies. First a sequential linear programming method was used to find a prototype of the bell. The necessary analyses were done using the finite element method. Next, a fast analysis model was derived by numerical experimental design techniques. This analysis model led to the final geometry of the major-third bell.

Abstract:
The urgency of improving the professional training of future music teachers in connection with the growing public demand for the professional qualities of teachers is substantiated. It is established that the teacher’s search for a new content of education, in particular among ethnopedagogical bell ringing means, the use of non-traditional methods and forms of teaching will promote creative development of an individual, the formation of value attitude to the traditions and customs of his/her nation. The necessity of formation of methodical readiness of future teachers-musicians for the use of bell-ringing means in professional activity is defined. The development of students’ motives for studying bell ringing will be more effective by directing the educational process of art and pedagogical faculties to the development of future music teachers’ bell ringing competencies. The purpose of the article is to highlight the author’s contribution to the content of academic disciplines included in the cycle of professional training of future music teachers, information about bell ringing, as well as to present the methodological content of lectures and practical classes. Among the vectors of innovative adjustments, making changes to the work programs of educational components, the organization of independent extracurricular activities of music students have been defined. The author’s system of semantic additions to the disciplines of the professional cycle of training future teachers of music has been presented. Instructional and methodical materials for lectures, seminars and practical classes, organization of independent work have been developed. The practical value of the paper lies in the presentation of creative, didactic tasks that will contribute to the formation of students’ skills and abilities to use the bell-ringing means in professional activities. Cognitive and research work, excursions, expedition and on field collection of materials about bell-ringing of the region, production of photomontages, slide compositions, video materials, presentations of the developed creative projects have been suggested as extracurricular forms of work. Thus, the introduction of bell-ringing material in the normative and practical component of higher education will make it possible to eliminate contradictions between students’ acquisition of theoretical knowledge and their practical application.

Kaminski, Jason. "Kolokol : spectres of the Russian bell." University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/421.

Full text
Abstract:
Kolokol: Spectres of the Russian Bell, submitted by Jason Kaminski in fulfilment of the requirements of PhD (Humanities and Social Sciences) candidature at the University of Technology, Sydney, is an interpretative history of Russian bells (kolokola) and bell music (zvon). As a cultural object and sign, the Russian bell is associated with ideas of transcendence, and ideological and creative ‘vision.’ This interpretation of the signification of the kolokol as a sign arises directly from the perception that the bell is essentially a physical (anthropomorphic) body that is capable of ‘projecting’ or ‘transcending’ itself in the form of a spectrum. This essential ‘spectrality’ defines a history of the Russian bell as an instrument of magical, spiritual and religious ritual, as a cultural artefact associated with changing ideological movements (paganism, Christianity and communism) and as a sign represented synaesthetically in image, sound and text. Ethnographic and campanological studies observe that the kolokol ‘reflects Russian social history like a mirror’, representing the ‘voice of God’ or Logos as an aural or ‘singing’ icon, pointing to the primordial origins of language. This dissertation further investigates the idea that the kolokol acts as an ‘acoustical mirror’ and ‘ideological apparatus’: a medium or spectre through which Russian history and culture is interpellated and reflected. The various logical streams (storytelling, legend, script, text, song, cultural theory, philosophy and ethnography) that contribute to this dissertation form a textual ‘polyphony’ through which the essential meanings and ‘personae’ of the kolokol as a cultural object are interpreted. The bell is regarded as presenting an enigma of signification that must be resolved through investigation and definition. The thesis concludes that the kolokol acts as an iconic sign of the creative ‘Word’ (Logos) and as a symbolic sign that implies a ‘bridge’, copula or psychic ‘hook’, articulating the relationship between the cosmos and consciousness, the material and spiritual, the real and imaginary. Full text
Abstract:
A brief overview of the workings of the human auditory system is followed by a review of literature concerning both the theories and experimental investigations of human pitch perception. The application of these theories to the inharmonic complex tones produced by bells is discussed, and further experiments using bell sounds are reviewed. A methodology for psychoacoustic experiments with specific reference to those investigating pitch perception of inharmonic complex tones is presented. This methodology is then implemented in an experimental investigation of pitch perception of ringing and chiming bell sounds. A pitch matching experiment using ringing and chiming sounds from four bells aimed to determine perceived pitch differences between ringing and chiming bells. This experiment was inconclusive because insufficient data was collected. Known experimental results, such as the inability of non-musicians to match the pitches of sounds with different timbres were confirmed. Spectral analyses of the stimuli were performed. The presentation of stimuli at a low level of sensation is questioned, as this might have prevented pseudo high frequency noise resulting from stronger upper partials in the ringing sound from being audible, and hence the pitch differences between ringing and chiming bells would not be observed.

Abstract:
The rise of spectral music and of the compositional model that lies at its base has been conditioned by a specific technoscientific context, at a crossroads between disciplines as diverse as physics, psychoacoustics, electronics, computer sciences and philosophy. The present thesis retraces some of its stages. While going back to the advent of modern science in the 17th century, it leads to a characterization of this aesthetic movement as an example of a non- Cartesian revolution in the sense that Bachelard gave the term in The New Scientific Spirit. At the same time, it considers previous musical advances and shows how spectral music has formed itself by ‘thematizing’ attempts from throughout the 20th century to systematize complex sounds as form-bearing elements

Bourne, Tracy Marie. "Perceptual, acoustic and physiological characteristics of music theatre singing." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/15684.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the scientific research on the singing voice has focused on classical and operatic singing. Music theatre and contemporary voice are growing in popularity within Western musical culture, but little is known about safe and effective training methods, aesthetics and vocal health for students of these vocal styles. This research aims to combine pedagogical experience and objective data gathered from experimental studies in order to develop a more complete understanding of the perceptual, physiological and acoustic features of music theatre vocal styles. In study one, a series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with experienced vocal pedagogues from Australia, USA, UK and Asia to gather perceptual data on music theatre vocal qualities. Teachers identified the differences between classical and music theatre vocal production, including belt, legit and mix, and discussed vocal function, physiology, pitch range, style and pedagogical approaches to the training of music theatre singers. Interview data was coded and analysed and critically evaluated in the context of recent published research about music theatre and contemporary commercial music (CCM) vocal qualities. In the second study, three music theatre vocal qualities (“chesty belt”, “twangy belt” and “legit”) were investigated in female singers at their overlap range between F#4 – D5 (~370-600 Hz). Six experienced music theatre singers performed each quality on two different vowels ([e], [ɔ]). Audio and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded as well as the vocal tract impedance. Chesty belt was significantly different from legit in all parameters, while chesty and twangy belt qualities only differed in frequencies of the second vocal tract resonance (fR2). A fourth quality (“mix”) was explored in three singers. Differing production strategies were observed for each singer, with values of spectral, glottal and vocal tract descriptors found in between those measured for legit and chesty belt qualities. In the third study, three contrasting qualities (chesty belt, twangy belt, legit) were investigated in six male music theatre singers. Two vowels ([e], [ɔ]) were produced on four increasing frequencies at the upper limit of the singer’s belt range (~250-440 Hz). Audio and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded simultaneously with the vocal tract impedance. Singers produced belt qualities with significantly different production characteristics at the glottis, vocal tract and acoustic spectrum from legit, especially in the upper pitch range. Significant differences between chesty and twangy belt were also observed in the higher pitch range. A consistent tendency to tune the first vocal tract resonance (fR1) to the second voice harmonic (2f0) was observed in all three qualities, supporting the idea that belt and legit may differ by slight variations in voice quality rather than as fundamentally distinct modes of production in the male voice. The implications of this research are significant to the development of appropriate pedagogical strategies for the music theatre voice. These findings suggest that the training of music theatre singers should include both contemporary and classical approaches to vocal technique, especially for female singers.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the psychological mechanism known as evaluative conditioning. Evaluative conditioning is defined as a process whereby an emotion is evoked by a piece of music just because this stimulus has been paired, repeatedly, with other positive or negative stimuli, which are not necessarily logically connected to the music in any way. It is a special form of classic conditioning that involves the pairing of an initially neutral conditioned stimulus (CS) with an affectively valenced, unconditioned stimulus (US). After the pairing, the CS acquires the ability to arouse the same affective state as the US in the perceiver. The remainder of the chapter discusses the characteristics of evaluative conditioning, the emotions that conditioning might arouse, and the role of conditioning in everyday life.

Abstract:
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that airborne pathogens and viruses have a detrimental impact on the health and well-being of an individual in an indoor space. Respiratory particles are released as droplets of varying velocities and diameters, where smaller droplets (aerosols) linger in air for prolonged periods, increasing the infection risk of individuals in an enclosed space. The pandemic has raised concerns regarding the safety of musicians due to respiratory particles released through woodwind and brass instruments. A collaboration with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was pursued to assess the risk of infection and develop strategies to mitigate the spread of respiratory particles using computational fluid dynamics. A coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian modeling approach was employed to examine the airflow patterns and airborne particle pathogen transport induced by the musicians in the music hall. The investigation considered three brass instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone), without and with a bell covering. It was observed that the dispersion of particles for each instrument depended on the bell design and orientation of the instrument. For example, the trumpet produced a higher concentration of respiratory particles compared to a tuba, which has its tubing wrapped. Additionally, the effect of using bell covers (cloth covering on the opening of the brass instruments) showed that the covers reduced the number of pathogens escaping the instruments by capturing large respiratory particles and reducing the escaping velocity of small particles. Reduced particle velocities at the instrument opening meant that the particles traveled shorter distances, which helped mitigate the spread of virus in the music hall. Moreover, the efficacy of using Plexiglas partitions on the sides and in front of the musicians limited the transmission of pathogens from one musician to another. Overall, the findings of this study helped strategize the location of musicians based on the type of instruments being played and the operating conditions in the music hall to decrease the airborne transmission of the novel Coronavirus.

Abstract:
With the development of mobile technology and the progress of an Untact society, the number of people who listen to lectures or music in various urban environments is increasing. In response to such an increase in demand, Active Noise Canceling(ANC) earphones that remove ambient background noise or static and also enable stable listening have been developed, and the earphones are enjoying great popularity. However, these ANC earphones can put the user in a dangerous situation at any time because they block even major alarm sounds such as a car horn or fire alarm. In this study, 10 men and women in their 20s, who frequently use ANC earphones, were asked to listen to music by wearing ANC earphones without prior notification of the fact that a fire alarm sound was transmitted. After that, the fire alarm bell or emergency broadcast sound was randomly generated for them to recognise the fire situation, and the time it took to start evacuation was measured. And in all these processes, EEG was simultaneously measured to analyse changes in emotions such as arousal responses felt by the experimental participants As a result of the experiment, it was found that the case of transmitting an emergency broadcast made the participants start evacuation approximately 23 seconds faster than the case of sounding the fire alarm bell. However, as a result of correlation analysis with EEG values indicating arousal responses such as tension, irritability, and nervousness, the significance probability(p-value) was 0.825, indicating that there is no statistically significant correlation. Therefore, it was found that the participants’ awareness of the fire alarm sound decreased when wearing ANC earphones regardless of the types of the fire alarm whether it was an alarm bell or an emergency broadcast.

Abstract:
CEGeME - Center for Research on Musical Gesture and Expression is affiliated to the Graduate Program in Music of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), hosted by the School of Music, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, since 2008. Focused on the empirical investigation of music performance, research at CEGeME departs from musical content information extracted from audio signals and three-dimensional spatial position of musicians, recorded during a music performance. Our laboratories are properly equipped for the acquisition of such data. Aiming at establishing a musicological approach to different aspects of musical expressiveness, we investigate causal relations between the expressive intention of musicians and the way they manipulate the acoustic material and how they move while playing a piece of music. The methodology seeks support on knowledge such as computational modeling, statistical analysis, and digital signal processing, which adds to traditional musicology skills. The group has attracted study postulants from different specialties, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Phonoaudiology and Music Therapy, as well as collaborations from professional musicians instigated by specific inquiries on the performance on their instruments. This paper presents a brief retrospective of the different research projects conducted at CEGeME.
