Abstract:

The author presents the lack of deliverance ministry in the Evangelical church world as being incongruent with biblical, theological and historical underpinnings and, as such, forms a significant hindrance to its effective mission. To demonstrate the efficacy of deliverance, the author surveyed 46 Christian leaders on 98 possible effects of their personal deliverance experience. The author concluded that deliverance renders significant and broad positive effects in the individual leader and makes numerous recommendations pertaining to the inclusion of deliverance in ongoing church ministry, discipleship strategies and global mission.

Meyer, Nanette R. "A phenomenological exploration of followers' well-being as influenced by their authentic leaders." Thesis, Capella University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10164298.

Full text
Abstract:

This transcendental phenomenological study sought to understand how the followers of authentic leaders in a multi-national healthcare organization experienced well-being. Twenty followers of 5 authentic leaders participated in the research and shared their lived experiences. Followers reported they experienced workplace well-being by maintaining work-life balance, feeling fulfilled/doing meaningful work, and feeling appreciated/recognized for their contributions. Workplace well-being was experienced as a result of their perceptions of feeling trusted and cared about as a whole being and not just an employee by their leaders. Followers also reported that the organizational culture provided support for leaders to demonstrate behaviors of authentic leadership, caring, trust, appreciation, respect, valuing others, openness, honesty, and transparency, which led them to feel an attachment to their leaders and organizations. Followers were motivated to exhibit organizational citizenship behaviors by providing extra or discretionary effort beyond their expected role requirements. These findings indicate that authentic leaders can provide value by cultivating well-being in the workplace. Findings also suggest recommendations for establishing organizational best practices.

Abstract:
While the experiences and challenges of principals at Title I schools has been studied, this research builds on those studies with the added dimension of exploring the perspectives of charter school principals who are new to the role and are working in the landscape of Title I schools in Los Angeles. This dissertation examines the history of charter schools and provides a contextual overview of charter schools and charter school accountability measures in the United States and in Los Angeles, with the added political context of the charter school landscape in Los Angeles after the historic Los Angeles teacher union strikes in 2019. The dissertation utilizes qualitative research to explore the experiences of six new charter school principals at Title I schools through semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and reflective field notes. The experiences of the new charter school principals are analyzed through transition theory and the three phases of transition (Bridges & Bridges, 2016) and transformative leadership practices (Leithwood & Jantzi, 2000). Findings explore the experiences of leaders who take on the mantle of principalship at Title I charter schools in Los Angeles, and how being new brings a unique dimension to those experiences. Findings also indicate that charter school principals value collaborative leadership and often use transformative leadership practices throughout their transition to the principalship during the first few years. The findings highlight the need for structured mentorship, coaching opportunities, and support xiii for new charter school principals and brings credence to the myriad of responsibilities and challenges inherently unique to leading Title I charter schools in Los Angeles.

Spark, Andrew M. "Why extraverts become leaders more often than introverts and the implications for psychological well-being." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2020. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/135558/1/Andrew_Spark_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
Extraverts become leaders more often than introverts, however it is not clear why this occurs or what the psychological consequences are for introverts occupying leadership roles. This thesis shows that extraverts have fewer negative thoughts about future leadership situations, behave in such a way as to positively influence what others think of their leadership potential, and enjoy an associated benefit in acute emotional well-being because of these behaviours. Reassuringly, however, introverts can enjoy these same benefits when they enact extraverted behaviours and do not experience any long-term psychological costs as a direct result of being promoted into a leadership role.

Abstract:
Creativity and innovation are attributes that are important in business and leadership today, perhaps more than ever. The recent economic crisis has shown that relying on pre-established business patterns is not enough anymore. Art has always been visionary and creativity is one of its major characteristics.   This thesis looks into the possible impact the arts can have on leadership. We ask ourselves what it is that we can learn from the arts, what they can teach us that is relevant for leaders and leadership. We have used the grounded theory and the methods suggested by Corbin and Strauss. We have conducted conversations with 12 leaders coming from different occupations who share at least one characteristic; they are all engaged in the arts. Through their experience, and through secondary data we used from studies concerning the impact the arts have on communities, we have constructed a theory. This shows that through their interaction with art, people are affected in their well-being, their personal development and their cognition. This phenomenon we have identified as the leader's catharsis.   We conclude our work by showing a map to show where in leadership research our substantive theory is useful. Further we also discuss how our findings can contribute to future leadership research. Our thesis might contribute to the discussions of aesthetics and leadership, the influence art has on the well-being of followers and how leaders can effectively form frames. Further, we suggest that the arts can be seen as a school for leadership development.

Abstract:
Leadership has been studied from many angles. But in my study, I study leadership with metaphors, hoping to provide some new insights. With metaphors, I want to seek an answer what can leaders do to integrate themselves to lead better. In this time, leadership is no longer constrained within one domain. With rapid changes and merging among companies and industries, people expect leadership in a broader range of contexts and domains. I also want to find what leaders can do to manage their influence well, to get it across domains. I look into various fields including psychology, culture, leadership and others to gain knowledge. With the help of metaphor, I break the questions into answerable parts and start my research. As for methodology, I adopt systems approach. I conduct eight interviews with leaders from diversified backgrounds regarding age, gender, industry, position and family status. But one thing in common is that they are all highly engaged in multi-cultural or multi-domain interaction. By studying their experience, learning their past and their approach, I come up with eight patterns of influence from the interviews, showing their uniqueness in style and approach to integrate themselves and to convey influence beyond domains. In theoretical study, I further compare the patterns to locate the common parts and reveal the different parts. Then I introduce a concise frame and analyze further. Finally, by combining books, articles and analysis, I provide the advice on what leader can do to expand their influence. Finally, I suggest a few points for leaders to integrate themselves to be better leaders and seek their styles. Then, using their styles or patterns, develop and deliver their influence beyond domains.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore the psychological well-being (PWB) and leadership development phenomena to increase the understanding of their meaning and influence on leaders. The utilisation of the qualitative case study research strategy explored the influence of storytelling on the development of leaders participating in a leadership development program. Reflection data from 40 senior leader participants was collected from a leadership development program at which influential speakers shared their personal leadership journeys. Utilising the NVivo 12 software for computer-assisted deductive and inductive coding, evidence of the Ryff six factors of PWB (1995) was found. In addition, cross-case synthesis analysis and thematic content analysis uncovered common themes within the Ryff dimensions of PWB across the cases of participant reflection data. Common themes identified included people-perspective leadership styles, proactively connecting with followers, visionary leadership, the ability to appreciate new perspectives, a strong sense of self, staying true to your values and beliefs, and effectively managing family and work-life. The emerging themes were explored, highlighting the positive influence of storytelling on participants and the enhancement of leader PWB and leadership development. The practical implication of this study is that findings suggest that leaders who integrate the common themes identified from the learning reflections into their own leadership style will support their dimensions of PWB to become leaders with more positive psychology and thus improved leadership.

Ryce, Sundra. "Self-care for Leaders| Cultivating Extraordinary Functioning & Psychological Well-being; A Quantitative Study Examining Burnout and Self-care Practices of Small-business Owners." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10809392.

Full text
Abstract:

This quantitative research study was developed in response to challenges small-business owners face with high stress, corporate devastation, and burnout. The research examines burnout and self-care practices among small-business owners to foster psychological well-being. Many studies exist on professional burnout; however, to date, the researcher has not been able to uncover published research related to small business owners’ exhaustion and burn out. Theories in academic literature on self-care, managing transitions, and psychological well-being can be applied to small-business owners experiencing burnout, while leading through corporate life cycles.

This research study utilizes a quantitative, correlational, design approach to examine the levels of burnout in the domains of exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy. Purposive sampling was used for small-business owner selection. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS-4 th Edition) was conducted to assess burnout and demographic data was collected from 66 participants. Pearson Correlations determined the relationship between levels of burnout among small-business owners and whether relationships exist between the burnout domains and participant’s demographic characteristics.

Results from this study indicated two significant findings. Correlations indicated higher levels of exhaustion for small-business owners who were younger. Secondly, correlation analysis indicated a significant negative correlation between respondent’s length of time in business and their level of exhaustion. The results of this research study may provide direction to where further research may be needed. Recommendations include the development of long-term workable stratagem for small-business owners to manage corporate life cycles, and enhance professional performance. Findings from this quantitative research can be used to enhance the quality of life, and improve corporate success of small-business owners, in the United States.

"An examination of front line nurse leaders' project work: 1) What types of issues are front line nursing leaders in British Columbia being expected to address within their practice environments? 2) Do the types of front line nursing leader responsibilities (as reflected in project work) change over time?" Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/33564.

Abstract:
The learning initiative called the British Columbia Nursing Administrative Leadership Institute (BCNLI) for first line nurse leaders was developed to address the need for educating and mentoring new nurse leaders. The program was a joint project between the Ministry of Health Services Nursing Directorate, British Columbia’s Chief Nursing Officers and the School of Nursing at UBC. The BCNLI program is evidenced based and included information on leadership, management concepts and relevant issues for leaders, (MacPhee & Bouthillette, 2008). The front line nurse leaders who participated were provided education and mentoring, to increase their skills. The front line nursing leaders selected year long projects as part of the program. This study examined if there was any change to the types and scope of control of projects front line nurse leaders chose as part of learning and mentoring initiative. 211 nurse leaders’ projects from the BCNLI project data web pages were examined for scope of control, type of project, and Donabedian’s (1982) structure process outcomes framework using content analysis (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004). These projects provide a window to the types of issues that were relevant and seen as important to the front line nurse leader participants in each cohort of the BCNLI program from 2007 to 2010. This research found that there was no change between the nine cohorts as to structure or process coding. The majority of the projects were structure coded. The content analysis identified five main themes of recruitment/retenton, communication, education, care delivery evaluation, and tool development. The ability to identify the scope of projects of front line nurse leaders was important as very little research exists on scope of control for front line nurse leaders. Only 61% of the projects are at the nursing unit or front line (level two) position. There are concerns that front line nurse leaders were working beyond the nursing unit level. This research will help to understand if nurse leaders are taking on issues or problems that are beyond their roles and the type of projects that exist in the British Columbia Health Care.

Gonzalez, Bustillo Ivan Leonardo. "Exploring social well-being amongst community environmental leaders: A qualitative study." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/20790.

Full text
Abstract:
Social well-being results from the interactions human beings have along their life experience with other members of society, allowing them to evaluate their own well-being (Keyes, 1998). Considering the continuous social challenges faced by environmental leaders (Gallagher, 2012), the present study aimed to explore the social well-being of twelve community environmental leaders. Content analysis and rank-frequency methods were used to understand participants’ perspectives around social well-being and its five dimensions. The most relevant dimension for participants was social actualization; they associated social well-being with “Ability to develop”, “Community relationships” and “Making an impact” (related to the dimensions of social actualization, social integration and social contribution of Keyes’ theory) and evoked the new categories of “Natural environment” and “Human rights”. Among participants, social contribution was associated to personal attributes and social integration with trust. Personal growth appeared as the most relevant aspect of social actualization. Participants showed interest in understanding the way their communities are organized and cited hard work as the main attribute for accepting others. Finally, participants did not associate social integration with collective membership, did not refer to concrete actions when talking about social contribution and their perception as important members of their communities was not affected by having more than a year of community involvement, three findings that are in contrast with Keyes’ theory and experimental studies on social well-being. These results, although preliminary, inform about how this type of leaders experience social well-being while overcoming social challenges within the communities where they develop environmental solutions.

In recent years, obtaining license through national tests became a path to profes-sional tour leader. Although in 2003, the Taiwanese government started conducting na-tional tests to issue certificates for professional tour leaders, professional tour leaders still lacks respects from the society. This research discusses how tour leaders recognize their cognition of professionalism. Successful execution of a project exerts confidence that leads to self-efficiency. When one lacks confidence on his/her work, pressure and fatigue develops easily and they lead to unsatisfaction. Thus, whether an employee gains well-being from work de-termines the employee’s efficiency, productivity and turnover rate. How satisfy an em-ployee is deeply affects a firm’s competitiveness and continuous operation. Thus, this research seeks the relation between cognition of professionalism, job self-efficiency and well-being in the professional field. Taipei city is the main investigation of this research, because the research subject is tour leaders who work in Taipei. This research adopts the convenient sampling. Finally, 450 questionnaires were issued in total, and 336 questionnaires were collected. However 308 questionnaires were valid due to 28 answering imcompleted questionnaires. The effective recovery is 68.44%. After the survey of all questionnaires, SPSS12.0 is used for the data analysis. The statistics used involved descriptive statistics, item analysis, reliability analysis, correla-tion analysis, ANOVA and regression analysis. As the result, the relation of the cognition of professionalism is better, the well-being will also get better; the relation of the job self-efficacy is better, the well-being will also get better for tour leaders; the relation of the cognition of profes-sionalism is better, the job self-efficacy will also get better.

Mogale, Phillemon Matsapola. "A psychological well-being profile for junior leaders in the South African National Defence Force." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/27002.

Full text
Abstract:
The research focused on constructing a psychological well-being profile for flourishing practices for junior leaders by establishing the relationship between junior leaders' dispositional attributes (emotional affect, career orientations, and organisational commitment) and the flourishing attribute (positive psychological functioning). A nonprobability purposive sampling quantitative method was applied to a sample of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) personnel in Gauteng (N = 458) at junior leadership levels to explore the statistical relationship between their dispositional attributes (emotional affect, career orientations, and organisational commitment) and the flourishing attribute (positive psychological functioning) attribute. Multiple regression analyses indicated the dispositional attributes with the exception of emotional affect as significant predictors of the flourishing variable. The structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated a good fit of the data with the correlation-derived measurement model. Moderated hierarchical regression analyses indicated that age, race, gender and years of service as significant moderators of the relationship between the participants‘ dispositional attributes (emotional affect, career orientations and organisational commitment) and flourishing (positive psychological functioning) attribute. Tests for mean differences discovered that participants differed in terms of their age and race. The study made a significant contribution to the bulk of knowledge in the field of Industrial and Organisational Psychology. On a theoretical level, the study deepened the understanding of the individual and cognitive, affective, conative and relations management dimensions of the hypothesised psychological well-being profile. On an empirical level, the study developed an empirically tested psychological well-being profile that informs flourishing practices for individual junior leaders and organisational levels. On a practical level, dispositional and flourishing practices that inform the dimensions of the psychological well-being profile were recommended.

Thomas, Tieja. "The essence of being ‘non’: a phenomenological study of leaders’ beliefs within non-formal educational settings." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2876.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite non-formal education being introduced into the international discourse on education policy in 1972, there has since been relatively little research devoted to exploring this concept and, in particular, to the experiences of educators who lead non-formal educational processes. This thesis documents a phenomenological inquiry into the educational beliefs held by leaders working in non-formal educational settings within Canada. The purpose of this inquiry was to determine the existence of a shared set of educational beliefs among leaders in non-formal educational settings. The research included an emergent qualitative inquiry design that drew on hermeneutic and phenomenological philosophies as well as critical theory. Research methods involved narrative inquiry, auto-ethnography, and photo-elicitation. Data elicited by this investigation revealed that participants subscribe to a shared set of educational beliefs, the essence of which involves the interaction and interchange between elements of praxis, service, and concern for the develop of whole beings.

De, Kok Judith. "School leaders' perceptions of promoting relational well-being in a secondary school community / Judith de Kok." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15172.

Full text
Abstract:
Globally there seems to be an increase in psychosocial problems in school communities. This tendency can largely be contributed to the increasing complexity of modern society. Research studies indicate that for an organisation like a school to survive and improve the wellbeing of its members, it should become more flexible and adjustable to all sociological changes. In this study, it is reasoned that the complexity of human behaviour as well as the complex nature of a school community are not always fully realised. Leadership is thus not always able to make adjustments to enable the school to adjust to an ever-changing complex modern society. Internationally, most governments address this problem by the implementation of programmes and policies that acknowledge the necessity to view a school community as being part of broader eco-systems. The introduction of whole-school approaches in schools addresses this interaction and the dependency between systems. The reasoning is that change is more likely to occur when the whole community shares a collective vision about their plans, aspirations, and goals. Despite policies that support multi-dimensional interactive approaches, it is unfortunately plagued by systemic problems due to a lack to fully accommodate an understanding of complexity of human behaviour and systems. Although the holistic and collective principles are implicated in policies, the importance of the dynamic nature of relationships does not always receive the necessary attention. This purpose of this study is to focus on the potential of dynamic relationships in order to create a more humanised school community by utilizing dynamic interactive relational processes in the promotion of relational wellbeing. The emphasis is therefore on the role that school leaders can play to promote relational wellbeing by utilising this dynamic nature of relationships as a means to influence and change rigid authoritative leadership control by adopting a more transformative leadership style. Unless school leaders of the future become more sophisticated in their understanding of the complexity and the dynamic relational processes of human behaviour, it is unlikely that relational wellbeing in schools will be promoted. The researcher found it necessary to focus primarily on the current perceptions of leaders at all levels in a secondary school community. The challenge was an attempt to gain a better understanding of their experiences and thoughts about the restraining factors that affected the promotion of relational wellbeing can be addressed and challenged. Accordingly, a single qualitative research case study, consisting of an appreciative inquiry (AI), which was followed-up by a working session, was conducted at this school. In view of the findings of study, several recommendations were made for practice and policy development.

This study evolved from an involvement with professional people in a rural and semi-rural environment thereby taking into account the role which the Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) plays in their professional context of work. Two underlying factors motivate the study. Firstly, that professional needs and capacities of faith, belief and spirituality are not been catered for in the EAPs. Secondly, that an African-Christian wholesome sense making approach provides more satisfactory answers to the lack of faith, belief and spirituality in the EAPs than the modern versions of the classic dualist and tripartite anthropological schemes of soul and body or soul, spirit and body. Furthermore, a wholesome sense making approach supports and tackles people’s wellness and well-being levels more satisfactorily than the classic dualist and tripartite views. An outline of an EAP in which faith leaders and consultants and their programmes are integrated and which contributes to the enhancing of well-being levels and performance management of professional people is described. The main focus of the study revolves around wholesome foursome experiential patterns in which alternating emphases of faith experience are acted out in the sense of ‘I believe God, I believe myself, I believe my human neighbours and I believe the physical natural environment’. This four side pattern of faith experience functions as an important theoretical assumption in the study. A second theoretical assumption has to do with the foursome processual framework of God’s grand acts of creation, reconciliation (redemption= cross and resurrection of Jesus), renewal (ongoing renewal of everything) and consummation and fulfilment towards the end (aim and goal) in which we as people and the physical natural environment are intrinsically and continuously involved. A third theoretical assumption revolves around the foursome experiential professional performance pattern of ‘I perform for God, I perform for myself, I perform for my human neighbours and I perform for the physical natural environment’. The foursome experiential patterns are also set as evaluative pointer patterns around which the empirical investigative part is constructed.
