Abstract:
Detailed research into marsupial behavioural ecology and modelling of past Aboriginal exploitation of terrestrial fauna has been scarce. Poor bone preservation is one limiting factor in Australian archaeological sites, but so has been the lack of research concerning the ecology and physiology of Australia’s endemic fauna. Much research has focused on marine and fresh-water shell-fish found in coastal and inland midden sites. Detailed studies into areas such as seasonality of past human occupation and nutritional returns from terrestrial prey species have not had the same attention. This chapter reviews the current level of published Australian research into two aspects of faunal studies, seasonality and nutrition. It describes the patterns from well-researched faunal data excavated from the Ice Age sites in southwest Tasmania. Concentration is on the vertebrate fauna found in seven limestone cave sites to examine any temporal changes to seasonal butchery and identify any differences between seasonally occupied sites.

Abstract:
Explaining the practical implications of new discoveries in 'life-course biology', Nutrition and Lifestyle for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding is an informed resource on factors that affect offspring development. The impact of parental lifestyle and behavioural choices influence not only foetal development and birth outcomes, but also postnatal development, yet guidance on appropriate diet, behaviour, and exposures during pregnancy is often confusing and contradictory. With accessible explanations of the latest scientific research, and clear summaries and recommendations, this online resource is a valuable and authoritative guide for all levels of health care providers. It provides an overview of the background evidence, highlighting the importance of lifestyle choices prior to and during pregnancy, and it includes in-depth discussions of nutritional and lifestyle factors that impact on pregnancy and offspring that are based on the latest research and exploration of key scientific studies.

Abstract:
Abstract This book contains 19 chapters on the application of animal nutrition science, including nutrients and important feed constituents and their functions, drinking water, feed digestion, feed digestibility, feed nutritive value, animal feeds, feed intake, nutrient requirements, ration formulation, nutritional models, feed additives, feed-borne pathogens/toxins/nutrient deficiencies, feed-related non-infectious diseases, grazing behaviour, grazing management, assessing nutritional status and nutrient supplements for grazing animals, feed storage and handling, feed processing and the environmental impact of animal production. It is intended for undergraduates taking courses in animal nutrition, farmers and advisors who want to broaden their understanding of animal feeding and management and scientists who would like to see how their research interests integrate into practical animal feeding.

Abstract:
Perinatal experiences during a critical developmental period program brain structure and function “for life,” thereby determining vulnerability to psychopathology and cognition in adulthood. Although these functional consequences are associated with alterations in HPA-axis activity and hippocampal structure and function, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The parent-offspring relationship (i.e., sensory and nutritional inputs by the mother) is key in mediating these lasting effects. This chapter discusses how early-life events, for example, the amount of maternal care, stress, and nutrition, can affect emotional and cognitive functions later in life. Interestingly, effects of perinatal malnutrition resemble the perinatal stress-induced long-term deficits. Because stress and nutrition are closely interrelated, it proposes that altered stress hormones and changes in specific key nutrients during critical developmental periods act synergistically to program brain structure and function, possibly via epigenetic mechanisms. Understanding how the adult brain is shaped by early experiences is essential to develop behavioural and nutritional preventive therapy.

Abstract:
Where possible, pre-conception counselling is desirable for both prospective parents in order to address issues of lifestyle and nutrition so that pregnancy can proceed with the best possible start. If dieting is necessary this should be initiated as far in advance of the pregnancy as possible, because inadequate nutrition around the time of conception can influence the fetal growth trajectory and weight at birth. Regardless of BMI, women should also be encouraged to engage in regular aerobic exercise. Nutritional requirements in the pre-conception period include adequate amounts of oily fish to provide omega-3 fatty acids. All women planning a pregnancy should receive 400 #amp;#x00B5;g of folic acid daily, and vitamin B12 and vitamin D supplementation may be necessary, particular for vegetarians. Other vitamins and minerals should be considered, particularly iron and iodine, but most should be obtainable from a balanced diet. Harmful behaviours and environmental exposures should be avoided.

Abstract:
The father’s nutrition and lifestyle can influence pregnancy outcomes in a number of ways. In the pre-conception period, several modifiable factors in paternal behaviour and nutrition can influence sperm count and quality, and consequently affect fertility. For example, sperm count and quality is affected by alcohol, recreational drugs, prescription drugs, infections, tobacco, and environmental toxins, as well as the man’s BMI and metabolic health state. A father’s metabolic status may also have some impact on the metabolic trajectory of his offspring. Other aspects of a father’s behaviour can indirectly affect the developing fetus through occupational and environmental exposures. Prospective fathers need to be conscious of their personal health and nutrition, as well as of environmental factors that may influence both their ability to conceive and the health of their future offspring.
