Abstract:
Chapter 3 considers how behavioural theory and research can be translated into successful cancer prevention programmes. Such programmes may be applied at the individual, group, community or national level. The agenda for behavioural interventions in cancer prevention is set by rigorous epidemiological analysis. The ultimate goal of behavioural interventions is to enable individuals to reduce their cancer risk by engaging in recommended preventive behaviours. To reach this goal, a thorough analysis of factors underpinning the behaviour in question is needed to identify possible targets for intervention. This foundation can be strengthened by consideration of key psychological principles known to be important drivers of health-related behaviour. Chapter 3 presents the Big Five Principles of Behaviour Change and suggest how they may be applied to promoting and evaluating change in cancer preventive behaviour.

Abstract:
The evidence supporting the validity and stability of ADHD during the preschool years is now considerable and, coupled with mounting evidence indicating long-term impairments and economic cost of ADHD, provides a clear rationale for early intervention during the preschool years. While medication is an evidenced-based intervention for older children with ADHD, higher side effects and lower levels of efficacy in preschool children make medication a less attractive option. This chapter presents the behavioural treatment options available for preschool children with ADHD and reviews the evidence base supporting their use, focusing on ADHD, conduct problems, school readiness, parenting behaviour, and parental wellbeing as outcomes. Mediators and moderators of behavioural treatments for preschool children are evaluated, with a focus on the lack of clear mediation and moderation evidence. Finally, important clinical and service delivery considerations are explored, including specialist versus generic types of behavioural interventions, mode of intervention delivery, and dose effects.

Abstract:
On 26 April 2013, the Wall Street Journal published an essay by neurocriminologist Adrian Raine promoting his newest book, The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime. On the newspaper’s website, an image of a black-and-white brain scan overlaid with handcuffs headed the essay. Clicking ‘play’ turned the image into a video filled with three-dimensional brain illustrations and Raine’s claims that some brains are simply more biologically prone to violence than others. Rejecting what he describes as ‘the dominant model for understanding criminal behaviour in the twentieth century’ – a model based ‘almost exclusively on social and sociological’ explanations – Raine wrote that ‘the genetic basis of criminal behaviour is now well established’ through molecular and behavioural genetics.

Abstract:
Based on the conceptual building blocks introduced in the previous chapter, this chapter further sketches theoretical approaches and models that can be employed to guide rural health and disaster preparedness education programmes, namely the MAP-IT approach, precede–proceed model, P-Process, Health Belief Model, Transtheoretical (Stages of Change) Model, Theory of Planned Behaviour, Social Cognitive Theory, and complex interventions. These theories and models are intended to conceptualize human thought and behaviour and systematically explain the reasons behind actions such that they can be utilized to set the objectives and content of health intervention projects. Health literacy will also be discussed, with relevant examples for illustrative purposes.

Full text
Abstract:
Cognitive and behavioural changes are relatively common in patients with ALS, but often receive less emphasis than the loss of physical strength and function. There is extensive literature on the impact of cognitive and behavioural changes on Quality of Life (QoL) in caregivers and the patients themselves in a variety of other neurological conditions, the implications of which are directly applicable in many respects to ALS. Based on this information, a number of intervention strategies may be employed, including psycho-educational and psychotherapeutic interventions, group-based support services, cognitive stimulation/training, and multidisciplinary interventions, among others. Specific strategies can be used to manage cognitive and behavioural dysfunction in patients, and may serve to improve the QoL of patients and caregivers, while lessening caregiver burden.
