Postuma, Ronald B. REM sleep behavior disorder. Edited by Sudhansu Chokroverty, Luigi Ferini-Strambi, and Christopher Kennard. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199682003.003.0038.

Full text
Abstract:
A diagnosis of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a disorder characterized by “acting out” of dreams during REM sleep, has critical implications for a patient’s future. Aside from being a treatable parasomnia, usually managed with melatonin or clonazepam, RBD is the most powerful risk factor for Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies yet discovered. Over 70% of patients with idiopathic RBD will develop a neurodegenerative synucleinopathy. Moreover, the disease course is more severe in patients with RBD than those without. Numerous screens have been developed to aid detection, and clinical history can help distinguish RBD from NREM parasomnia. However, final diagnosis relies on polysomnographic documentation of REM atonia loss. Given the profound implications of idiopathic RBD, patients need careful counseling and the offer of neurological follow-up to detect and treat prodromal disease symptoms. Recognition of RBD is also a means to discover and test protective therapies against neurodegenerative disease.

Holland, John H. 3. Complex adaptive systems (CAS). Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199662548.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Complex adaptive systems (CAS) are composed of elements, called agents, that learn or adapt in response to interactions with other agents. ‘Complex adaptive systems’ shows that all CAS exhibit lever points, points where a small directed action causes large predictable changes in aggregate behaviour. All CAS agents have three levels of activity: performance (moment-by-moment capabilities), credit-assignment (rating the usefulness of available capabilities), and rule-discovery (generating new capabilities). The behaviour of a CAS is always generated by the adaptive interactions of its components; and the hierarchical structure characteristic of CAS is also generated—particular combinations of agents at one level become agents at the next higher level.

Yasukawa, Ken, ed. Animal Behavior. Praeger, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216958208.

Full text
Abstract:
Discover why animals do what they do, based on their genes, physiologies, cultures, traditions, survival and mating advantages, and evolutionary histories—and find out how studying behavior in the animal world helps us understand human behavior. The three volumes ofAnimal Behavior: How and Why Animals Do the Things They Docover the breadth of the field, addressing causation, development, function, and evolution in a wide range of animals, from invertebrates to humans. Inspired by Nobel laureate Nikolaas Tinbergen's work, the first two volumes follow Tinbergen's four classic questions of animal behavior, while the third volume supplies integrated examples of Tinbergen's investigative process applied in specific cases. Written in an engaging, accessible manner ideal for college students as well as general audiences, this evidence-based collection provides a fascinating tour of animal behaviorists' findings, such as how animal communication can be truthful or deceitful, the deadly serious business behind clashes in the "battle of the sexes," and how documentation of animal behavior can lead to a deeper understanding of human behavior. Each chapter provides both historical background and information about current developments in animal behavior knowledge.

New, Tim R. Insect behavior in conservation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797500.003.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
Some of the many ways in which understanding insect behavior can contribute to the conservation of threatened insect species, and complement the more widely acknowledged base of ecological knowledge, are outlined in a variety of different contexts to exemplify their importance and roles. Patterns of resource use by insects and their adaptability to environmental changes range from highly specific and non-flexible to the ability to adapt more readily, with many species of highest conservation concern linked with specializations that restrict their potential to change. Practical contexts discussed briefly include the discovery and use of resources, the problems of monitoring and assessing conservation priority and need, the options available as environments are changed, the difficulties of behavioral studies on rare and localized species, how behavior may link with vulnerability, and the integration of behavioral intricacies with insect conservation practice, helping to educate and encourage interest in this discipline.

Eldridge, Alice, and Oliver Bown. Biologically Inspired and Agent-Based Algorithms for Music. Edited by Roger T. Dean and Alex McLean. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190226992.013.18.

Abstract:
This chapter examines a range of approaches to algorithmic music making inspired by biological systems, and considers topics at the intersection of contemporary music, computer science, and computational creativity. A summary of core precursor movements both within and beyond musical practice (A Life, cybernetics, systems art, etc.) sets the scene, before core models and algorithms are introduced and illustrated. These include evolutionary algorithms, agent-based modelling and self-organizing systems, adaptive behaviour and interactive performance systems, and ecosystemic approaches to composition and computational creative discovery. The chapter closes by reviewing themes for future work in this area: autonomy and agency, and the poetics of biologically inspired algorithms.

Sutton, Adrian P. Concepts of Materials Science. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192846839.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This short book describes ten fundamental concepts – big ideas – of materials science. Some of them come from mainstream physics and chemistry, including thermodynamic stability and phase diagrams, symmetry, and quantum behaviour. Others are about restless atomic motion and thermal fluctuations, defects in crystalline materials as the agents of change in materials, nanoscience and nanotechnology, materials design and materials discovery, metamaterials, and biological matter as a material. A cornerstone of materials science is the idea that materials are complex systems that interact with their environments and display the emergence of new science from the collective behaviour of atoms and defects. Great attention is paid to the clarity of explanations using only high school algebra and quoting the occasional useful formula. Exceptionally, elementary calculus is used in the chapter on metamaterials. It is not a text-book, but it offers undergraduates and their teachers a unique overview and insight into materials science. It may also help graduates of other subjects to decide whether to study materials science at postgraduate level.
