Abstract:
Existing heat–health warning systems focus on warning vulnerable groups in order to reduce mortality. However, human health and performance are affected at much lower environmental heat strain levels than those directly associated with higher mortality. Moreover, workers are at elevated health risks when exposed to prolonged heat. This study describes the multilingual “HEAT-SHIELD occupational warning system” platform (https://heatshield.zonalab.it/) operating for Europe and developed within the framework of the HEAT-SHIELD project. This system is based on probabilistic medium-range forecasts calibrated on approximately 1800 meteorological stations in Europe and provides the ensemble forecast of the daily maximum heat stress. The platform provides a non-customized output represented by a map showing the weekly maximum probability of exceeding a specific heat stress condition, for each of the four upcoming weeks. Customized output allows the forecast of the personalized local heat-stress-risk based on workers’ physical, clothing and behavioral characteristics and the work environment (outdoors in the sun or shade), also taking into account heat acclimatization. Personal daily heat stress risk levels and behavioral suggestions (hydration and work breaks recommended) to be taken into consideration in the short term (5 days) are provided together with long-term heat risk forecasts (up to 46 days), all which are useful for planning work activities. The HEAT-SHIELD platform provides adaptation strategies for “managing” the impact of global warming.

Abstract:
Wild animals face novel environmental threats from human activities that may occur along a gradient of interactions with humans. Recent work has shown that merely living close to humans has major implications for a variety of antipredator traits and physiological responses. Here, we hypothesize that when human presence protects prey from their genuine predators (as sometimes seen in urban areas and at some tourist sites), this predator shield, followed by a process of habituation to humans, decouples commonly associated traits related to coping styles, which results in a new range of phenotypes. Such individuals are characterized by low aggressiveness and physiological stress responses, but have enhanced behavioral plasticity, boldness, and cognitive abilities. We refer to these individuals as “preactive,” because their physiological and behavioral coping style falls outside the classical proactive/reactive coping styles. While there is some support for this new coping style, formal multivariate studies are required to investigate behavioral and physiological responses to anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:
Abstract A major driver of wildlife responses to climate change will include non-genomic effects, like those mediated through parental behavior and physiology (i.e., parental effects). Parental effects can influence lifetime reproductive success and survival, and thus population-level processes. However, the extent to which parental effects will contribute to population persistence or declines in response to climate change is not well understood. These effects may be substantial for species that exhibit extensive parental care behaviors, like birds. Environmental temperature is important in shaping avian incubation behavior, and these factors interact to determine the thermal conditions embryos are exposed to during development, and subsequently avian phenotypes and secondary sex ratios. In this article, we argue that incubation behavior may be an important mediator of avian responses to climate change, we compare incubation strategies of two species adapted to different thermal environments nesting in extreme heat, and we present a simple model that estimates changes in egg temperature based on these incubation patterns and predicted increases in maximum daily air temperature. We demonstrate that the predicted increase in air temperature by 2100 in the central USA will increase temperatures that eggs experience during afternoon off-bouts and the proportion of nests exposed to lethal temperatures. To better understand how species and local adaptations and behavioral-plasticity of incubation behavior will contribute to population responses to climate change comparisons are needed across more avian populations, species, and thermal landscapes.

Abstract:
The Nearctic shield-back katydid genus Neduba is revised. Species boundaries were demarcated by molecular phylogenetic analysis, morphology, quantitative analysis of calling songs, and karyotypes. Nine previously described species are redescribed: N. carinata, N. castanea, N. convexa, N. diabolica, N. extincta, N. macneilli, N. propsti, N. sierranus, and N. steindachneri, and twelve new species are described: N. ambagiosa sp. n., N. arborea sp. n., N. cascadia sp. n., N. duplocantans sp. n., N. inversa sp. n., N. longiplutea sp. n., N. lucubrata sp. n., N. oblongata sp. n., N. prorocantans sp. n., N. radicata sp. n., N. radocantans sp. n., and N. sequoia sp. n. We chose a lectotype for N. steindachneri and transferred N. picturata from a junior synonym of N. diabolica to a junior synonym of N. steindachneri. Diversification in this relict group reflects cycles of allopatric isolation and secondary contact amidst the tumultuous, evolving geography of western North America. The taxonomy and phylogenies presented in this revision lay the groundwork for studies of speciation, biogeography, hybrid zones, and behavioral evolution. Given that one Neduba species is already extinct from human environmental disturbance, we suggest conservation priorities for the genus.

Abstract:
Abstract Voluntary medical male circumcision has been shown to provide a 50%–70% reduction in the risk of HIV infection without contributing to behavioral disinhibition of safer sexual practices. This study examined the interim implementation and dissemination data of Spear and Shield 2, an HIV risk-reduction program in Zambia. The purpose of this interim review was to identify contextual challenges to implementation and implement midcourse corrections associated with sustainability of program delivery. Using a mixed-methods design, quantitative evaluations of organizational functioning, barriers to implementation, burnout, and organizational readiness, as well as qualitative data utilizing the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), were examined to evaluate program implementation. Participants were 184 health care providers from 46 clinics in Zambia. Successful implementation was associated with better community and leader support, and employee readiness and motivation. Quantitative assessments were not related to implementation and provided a limited picture of implementation outcomes. Results suggest that the qualitative data underlying the CFIR constructs provided a nuanced, contextual assessment of implementation, and dissemination outcomes. The CFIR may be valuable in informing the implementation of evidence-based interventions in other parts of Zambia.

Abstract:
The 'status-signalling' hypothesis states that individuals might avoid unprofitable fights by signalling their competitive ability and assessing the signals of others. The frontal shields of rails (Aves : Rallidae) are fleshy structures that are displayed prominently during agonistic interactions. Shield maintenance probably requires elevated levels of testosterone and deposition of carotenoid pigments, which implies that shield size and colour could be honest signals of the ability or willingness to fight. We used field observations and a model experiment to study the signalling function of the red shield of the dusky moorhen, Gallinula tenebrosa. Birds with relatively larger shields were more likely to win aggressive encounters, and the outcome was apparently unaffected, or less strongly affected, by body size, weight, condition and sex. Shield size increased with body size and weight, but neither explained more than 26% of the variation in shield size, even after controlling for age and date. Shield size was not affected by body condition, as estimated from residuals of a regression of weight on body size. Moorhens confronted with a model fitted with a large shield retreated more quickly than they did when presented with the same model bearing a small shield, supporting the results from natural interactions. We conclude that the frontal shield functions as a signal during agonistic interactions, and possibly signals the ability or willingness to fight.

Shirasuna, Takeshi. "Finite element analyses on cohesive soil behavior due to advanced shield tunneling." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50010.

Full text
Abstract:
Soil tunnels are usually constructed using a shield with an open face. However, in the past decade, innovations in shield tunneling technology have brought closed-faced shields that provide continuous support to the face and permit tunneling through even the most difficult conditions of soft ground. These new machines are typically operated in such a way that during tunneling the soil at the face is actually heaved away from the shield. This operating procedure has been said to allow greater control of the ground movements around and above the shield, and to minimize detrimental settlements. However, there is little hard evidence to this effect and there is no rational basis to judge the actual influence of the soil heave. Building on former researchers’ efforts, this thesis is directed towards developing a suitable finite element method (FEM) approach to the advanced shield problem. The FEM program developed includes the Prevost elasto-plastic soil model, allows for analysis of development and dissipation of excess pore pressure, large deformation, and simulation of the construction procedure of advanced shield tunneling. This is the first time that the Prevost model was applied to a soft clay. Modifications were made, in particular for the parameter determination, to make the model applicable for the soft clay of San Francisco Bay Mud. Examination of two other soil models for the tunnel analysis, nonlinear pseudo-elastic and Cam Clay models, showed the Prevost model to be preferable. Loading procedures were also examined to accurately simulate the heaving and tail void closure effects. The finite element simulation of the N-2 sewer project, which is the first advanced shield project in the United States, demonstrated that the prediction agreed consistently well with the observations in the field. Further analyses indicated that heave at the face of the shield increases long·term consolidation settlements while it decreases immediate settlements and thus the final settlement may be reduced. The tail void simply increases settlements. The results suggest that strict control of heaving and elimination of tail void with proper and prompt grouting are crucial for mitigating ground movements with advanced shield tunneling.

Full text
Abstract:
Protective coloration such as aposematism and crypsis occurs in many insects but only a few species alter their defensive strategy during the same instar. We hypothesize the adult shield bug Graphosoma lineatum with an alternating black and non-melanised longitudinal striation exhibit such a change in defensive coloration. In Sweden, the non-melanised stripes of the pre-hibernation G. lineatum are pale brown and cryptic but they change during hibernation to red and aposematic. We have tested the adaptive functions of coloration of the two G. lineatum forms against bird predators. In Paper I we used great tits as predators and measured detection time of the two forms against a background of dry grass and plants, simulating late-summer conditions. We found that the birds took longer time to find the pale than the red form. Thus, the pale form of G. lineatum is more cryptic in a dry environment than the red form. In Paper II and III we used naïve predators and measured attack rate/latency on red and pale adults and fifth-instar larvae (black and brown) to investigate avoidance and generalisation between the stages. In Paper II domestic chicks initially found the red form most intimidating, but both adult forms are more intimidating than the larva. Moreover, there was a broad generalisation among forms. In Paper III naïve great tits did not find the red form significantly more aversive than the pale adult. Neither the chicks nor the tits showed any difference in the speed of avoidance learning between the two adult colour forms. In Paper IV the shieldbugs themselves were the main focus as we compared activity levels in the different colour forms and found that G. lineatum alters behaviour in accordance to their protective strategy. Thus they were significantly less active during the cryptic phase. Taken together, these experiments suggest that the pale brown adult invests in a cryptic strategy at the cost of reduced protection from aposematism, whereas the red adult benefits from aposematism at the cost of reduced camouflage.

Abstract:
Identifikácia škodlivého správania spočíva v nájdení najdôležitejších vlastností natrénovaných klasifikátorov a následnej extrakcie podgrafu pozostávajúceho iba z týchto dôležitých vlastností uzlov a vzťahov medzi nimi. Následne je navrhnuté pravidlo pre hodnotenie extrahovaného podgrafu. Diplomová práca prebehla v spolupráci so spoločnosťou Avast Software s.r.o.

This study first explored the surface settlement rate induced by shield-tunnelling based on data from Taipei and it was found that no further movement on ground level in 70-100 days after passing the machine head. In addition, majority of surface settlement caused by shield-tunnelling in Taipei is the immediate settlement and the consolidation only contributes 28% to 35% of total surface ground settlement. A feedback back analysis based on field measurement data was delivered to define the surface settlement trough width parameter (K) and ground loss rate (V). It indicated that K varies from 0.5 to 1.0 and V varies from 0.8% to 1.3%. Further, influences on surface settlement from two construction parameters, cell pressure and backfill grout volume were examined. It was recommended that an additional cell pressure would not reduce the ground loss rate after a certain cell pressure was given. It was also seen that actual volume of backfill grout used during construction is 113- 143% of theoretical volume and more backfill grout might reduce surface settlement but the construction cost would be definitely increased.

This study investigates the effects of adjacent shield tunneling on the mechanical behaviors of existing foundation with different types and the deformation responses of soil strata. In Taipei Metropolitan, the shield tunneling is commonly performed thru the underground of different foundation types include green field (without foundation), mat foundation and piled-raft foundation with diaphragm wall (D-wall) retaining structure. Firstly, the validity of numerical procedures used in the simulation of shield tunneling were verified by comparing the settlement trough of simulation with that of measurement of Nei-hu line (CB420 bid) of MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) construction project, in Taipei Metropolitan. The numerical results demonstrate that the simulation phases, various applied pressure, and material model parameters used in shield tunneling simulation can effectively capture the deformation responses of soil strata in the field site. Meanwhile, based on the typical constructions of deep excavation and foundation in Taipei Metropolitan, several three-dimensional (3-D) numerical models of shield tunneling were established for three types of foundation and two types of advancing modes. The foundation types include Case-F1 (green field without foundation), Case-F2 (mat foundation with D-wall), and Case- F3 (piled-raft foundation with D-wall). On the other hand, the shield tunneling was arranged to advance at a vertical distance V (V-value=0.5xD, 1.0xD, 2.0xD and D=5.4 m=tunnel diameter) beneath a foundation and at a horizontal distance H (H-value=0.5xD, 1.0xD, 2.0xD) beside a foundation. The interactive behaviors of shield tunneling and existing foundation structures were discussed in terms of transverse and longitudinal settlement troughs, settlement of pile head (δv), bending moment of pile shaft (Mp), lateral displacement (δh) and bending moment (Mw) of D-wall. In addition, the effect of sectional contraction rate C (C-value=0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0) on the deformation response of soil strata during shield tunneling was also investigated. Based on the numerical results, the displacements of soil strata, piled-raft foundation and diaphragm wall varies with the advancing of shield tunneling and among which the variation of settlement trough of soil strata is most significant. However, the variation of bending moment of D-wall is negligible because the disturbance of shield tunneling to the D-wall is much smaller than that in the excavation stage. In addition, for all types of foundations and shield tunneling underground at a vertical distance V (=0.5xD, 1.0xD, 2.0xD), the influence zone (or disturbance zone) of ground settlement above tunnel crown caused by the advancing of shield tunneling approximates in a range of -3.0xD (shield approaching) ~ 2.0xD (shield move away). The deformation of soil strata and foundation structure above the tunnel crown increase with the decreasing V-value while the mechanical mechanism changes as the V-value increasing. For the situation of shield tunneling advancing beneath the foundation, the settlement of soil strata above tunnel crown of Case-F3 (piled-raft foundation with D-wall) descends dramatically when comparing with that of Case-F2 (mat foundation with D-wall). Meanwhile, the settlement of Case-F3 is similar to that of Case- F1 (green field without foundation). Moreover, the maximum ground settlement is directly proportional to the sectional contraction rate C of shield tunneling. Accordingly, the C-value has a significant effect on the settlement calculation caused by shield tunneling. For the situation of shield tunneling advancing beside the foundation, a ground heave occurs due to the unbalanced overburden between the D-wall and shield. In addition, the settlement of monitoring points above the tunnel crown starts in response to the tunnel advancing when the tunnel face locates at a distance to the monitoring point of y=-3.0xD (shield approaching) ~ y=2.0xD (shield move away).

Taipei Metropolitan is located in an isthmus environment. Under such high density development of commercial buildings and due to an increasing number of underground adjacent structures in close proximity of constructions, an immense number of impacts have been brought on the building constructions along the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines. In the past, most scholars in Taiwan have conduced studies with preference on discussing the impacts of the direct pass-through of MRT below the existing buildings, however with only few scholars provided studies on impacts of the deep excavation process for building foundation on MRT tunnels. Therefore this issue merits further investigation. The study emphasizes on the case study of MRT project along the Xinzhuang Line, with reference to measurements taken from the 『impact assessment report of new building excavation on MRT tunnel safety 』 to be used as raw data, applying with numerical back analysis to analyze the overall displacement, lateral displacement, bending moment, and shear force of diaphragm wall, as well as vertical displacement, lateral displacement, bending moment and shear force of MRT shield tunnel during the excavation phase. Subsequently conduct simulation on the impact of foundation vertical excavation, diaphragm wall thickening, increase of supporting prestress and change of supporting stiffness to the neighboring tunnel within a reasonable range. From the analysis results we have drawn the following conclusions: 1. The center offset△r of uplink tunnel will expand with the increase in depth of excavation of west wall SID2. 2. The value of the dump tube degree for west wall SID2 will result in a relatively reduced effect with increase for δmax in depth of excavation. 3. The value of center offset△r of uplink tunnel will result in a relatively reduced effect with the increase in depth of excavation. 4. When analysis the wall thickness of △Xc and △Yc, △Xc increases with the increase in depth of excavation, while △Yc reduces on the contrary. With respect to supporting prestress, both △Xc and △Yc reduce with the increase in depth of excavation, while the supporting stiffness remains unchanged.

Abstract:
This chapter considers and rejects two arguments for leniency towards child criminals. According to the first, child criminals should be treated leniently since their bad behavior springs from developmentally normal psychological mechanisms operating in criminogenic circumstances. The chapter objects to this argument on the grounds that it is guided by a mistaken view to the effect that punishment is justified only when applied to aberrant behavior. According to the second argument, child criminals should be treated leniently because they can be expected to age out of their criminogenic habits without punitive intervention. The chapter objects to this argument on the grounds that it relies on an indefensibly narrow conception of the reasons to punish. The chapter also discusses the degree to which children’s prospects for rehabilitation should shield them from the sentence of life without parole.

Abstract:
It is hornbook law that a defendant’s guilt for a crime can be predicated on an omission to act only if the defendant was under a legal duty to engage in the omitted act. By contrast, guilt can be predicated on an affirmative action where there is no legal duty to omit the act. This chapter offers a rationale for the Duty Requirement by arguing that it shields from liability a set of wrongdoers who are not criminally culpable for their wrongful behavior. To be criminally culpable is for one’s behavior to manifest a disregard for legal reasons to refrain from that behavior. Since there can be a legal reason to refrain from behavior that includes an omission only if there is a legal reason to engage in the omitted act, people are criminally culpable for omissions only if they have legal reasons to engage in the acts they omit.

Abstract:
Addiction is this country’s most pervasive and damaging public health problem, yet most Americans receive care that results in a failure rate that is both astronomically high and shielded from public view. This book examines the current state of the addiction treatment business and explores the reasons why—unlike those for all other behavioral, psychological, or neurological disorders—the treatment of addiction has been frozen in amber and little improved since the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935. After describing the size and scope of the problem and examining actual recovery rates for those who undergo treatment, there is the assertion that there are effectively two kinds of treatment regimes in the United States: those that medical doctors receive and those for the rest of us. The former has about an 80 percent success rate, the latter about an 80 percent failure rate. Drawing from personal experience as a former patient and person in long-term recovery, as well as 22 years as a clinician, professor, and researcher, many of the impediments to effective treatment today are described. The book finally offers a plausible and cost-effective way to disrupt the dismal status quo and realistically aspire to an 80 percent success rate for everyone who receives professional help for a substance use disorder.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a case study from the Blue Shield of California Foundation (BSCF) which in 2016 achieved considerable success in its work to expand access to high-quality health care and to end domestic violence in California. The case of BSCF demonstrates how to integrate disparate health care services, such as primary care and specialty care, and behavioral health and primary care, to improve access and quality while potentially lowering costs. BSCF created networks of established leaders within the health care and domestic violence safety nets in California and influenced safety net systems in California to think and act differently. However, despite these notable successes, BSCF struggled to sustain, scale, and spread these innovations to other organizations and systems or to embed them into policy changes. The chapter analyses why.

Italian law 24/2017 introduces a conformity assessment procedure to a behavioral pattern in case of an adverse occurrence committed by a sanitary professional: this one will be not stated criminally liable if his conduct has been recognized as compliant with guidelines. This chapter analyzes the mechanism provided by Italian Act, which is considered a useful instrument for managing the systemic complexity, but also a “shield” to defend the health profession. Despite some difficulties due to different factors (scientific and technological advance, prevention and control of clinical risk, enormous and sometimes unreliable flow of medical knowledge) the application of standards appears to protect healthy workers from accusations and social tensions by allowing for the actual circumstance. The object of the study will be Italian policies about public health and risk management and most significant judgments of Supreme Court. It will contextualize the damage in a relativistic and interactionist perspective.

Abstract:
The women’s majesty is always respectable but presently the cruelty of humans and the jeopardy on women are not leading us towards hell only but also degrading our sublimity. A lot of women were sexually and mentally harassed while some are beaten to death and many of the cases are even not registered in the papers. Generally, when the wrong behavior happening to the woman, at that time she alone fought with them, no one comes to save her life because no one saw her and if she went to the police, she has no proof. So, for the safety of the women, we think to design such a device so that the woman could get help from the police department and her family too. The device contains e-components like GSM, GPS, ESP32 camera module, battery, etc. The whole design will be coded in the IC ATmega328p. Later on, the design will be printed on the PCB. The device will be in a very small design in the form of “Borla” a Rajasthani traditional wear. Because of the device, we will make a direct touch with the lady and along with the live tracking of that woman. It will also help us in tracking delinquents to put them behind the bars with adequate proofs. With the help of GSM, GPS the nearest police department and her family members will get the location of the woman via mobile message and the police will lead the rest. It will give a complete shield to the woman just with a single touch. In this paper, we tried to reduce the cost of women’s shields with help of value analysis &optimization.

Abstract:
Shill bidding is where spurious bids are introduced into an auction to drive up the final price for the seller, thereby defrauding legitimate bidders. While shilling is recognized as a problem, presently there is little or no established means of defense against shills. This chapter presents an algorithm to detect the presence of shill bidding in online auctions. It observes bidding patterns over a series of auctions, providing each bidder a score indicating the likelihood of his/her potential involvement in shill behavior. The algorithm has been tested on data obtained from a series of realistic simulated auctions, and commercial online auctions. The algorithm is able to prune the search space required to detect which bidders are likely to be shills. This has significant practical and legal implications for commercial online auctions where shilling is considered a major threat. This chapter presents a framework for a feasible solution, which acts as a detection mechanism and a deterrent.

Abstract:
The cogeneration facility of interest contains four identical cogeneration units which produce about one half million Kg per hour of steam for an adjacent refinery and 385 megawatts of electricity. To supplement the production of steam, burners are used to heat the gas turbine exhaust. These burners incorporate shields to deflect exhaust gas flow around the flame base. In an effort to improve burner emissions of the units, the burner shield design was modified. This alteration resulted in gross deformation of the shields which interfered with combustion. A failure analysis of these components was conducted to ascertain the root cause of the observed behavior. Loads were estimated based upon operational conditions and material properties were obtained from the open literature. An evaluation was conducted to determine the temperature distribution first. This temperature distribution was then coupled with mechanical loading to obtain total operational stress levels. The stress levels at the observed temperatures clearly placed the material in the high strain rate (creep) region. The computed stress distribution confirmed the observed failure configuration. A new design was proposed to eliminate this failure mechanism. Detailed evaluations revealed that the new design, while a significant improvement, still operated near the creep region for the material.

Abstract:
A shielded cask is used to move welded containers whose contents are liquid. The requirement controlling the design of the shielded cask was the 9-meter drop. Since the orientation of the cask is arbitrary, it is required to assume an orientation which would result in the most damage to the cask. For such drops the target is usually considered to be an unyielding surface. The shielded cask of interest is not designed with components to mitigate the damage due to such drops. The shielded cask contains a thick shell of lead which is considered to move and deform during the 9-meter drop. Additionally, the container of liquid is not physically attached to the cask, and is free to move within the confined space during the event as well. Each component has its own unique stiffness and mass characteristics which could result in a different dynamic response. Since the dynamic response of each component is different, the most damage to a particular component may be sensitive to the boundary conditions. The unyielding surface would maximize the damage to the impact surface of the cask, but as a result, could mitigate the maximum loading applied to other components of the cask. Most actual targets are comprised of concrete. The evaluations are performed using an explicit finite element computer code. Consequently, it is necessary to monitor certain energies, such as the hourglass energy or a sliding energy indicating the behavior of the contact surface associated with the target. These parameters confirm the accurate behavior of the elements comprising the finite element model. Given that components can have a different response, the hourglass energy may also vary. Varying the boundary conditions will affect these types of parameters. In this paper, the authors present the results of a study of the effect of the boundary conditions on the shielded cask components response to the 9-meter drop. The primary orientation of interest is the end drop. The end drop maximizes the axial loading to the container. It is this orientation which could result in the most compression of the lead shield leading to increased radiation exposure. The container is considered as a pressure vessel and its integrity would be evaluated using the plastic strain based criteria contained in Section III, Division 3. The shielded cask, however, is not a pressure vessel and was evaluated using Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5. Both evaluations used the plastic strains and triaxiality factors determined from the drop evaluations.

Abstract:
The ASTM standard B 265 provides the requirements for the chemical composition of titanium (Ti) alloys. It is planned to use corrosion resistant and high strength titanium alloys to fabricate the drip shield at the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository. Titanium grade (Gr) 7 (R52400) and other Ti alloys are currently being characterized for this application. Ti Gr 7 contains 0.15% Palladium (Pd) to increase its corrosion performance. In this article we report results on the comparative short term corrosion behavior of Ti Gr 7 and a Ruthenium (Ru) containing alloy (Ti Gr 33). Ti Gr 33 also contains a small amount of Pd. Limited electrochemical testing such as polarization resistance and cyclic potentiodynamic curves showed that both alloys have a similar corrosion behavior in the tested environments.

Abstract:
Prediction of the entrainment of particles is an essential issue for the study of erosion phenomena in many applications. The original Shields curve describes the entrainment of many particles at many locations and is thought critical to general transport. The mechanisms involved in general are sliding, rolling and lifting, new models of which have been developed. I will introduce concepts for the determination of the effective velocity and the acting point of the drag force, based on integration of the drag force over the cross section of the exposed particle (where most earlier models were based on integration of the velocity), the behavior of turbulence intensity very close to the virtual bed level and the factor of simultaneous occurrence of the small turbulent eddies. The resulting values of the Shields parameter, based on practical and reasonable properties, are compared with data, resulting in the best correlation for the sliding mechanism with the data of many researchers. The Shields parameter found for rolling and lifting overestimates the measurements from literature. Sliding seems to be the mechanism moving the top layer of the particles, while rolling and lifting are much more mechanisms of individual particles. In the new model it is considered that in the laminar region entrainment is dominated by drag and the influence of small turbulent eddies reducing the thickness of the viscous sub-layer, while in the turbulent region this is dominated by drag and lift. The transition region is modeled based on sophisticated interpolation. The model also describes the influence of exposure and protrusion levels and is compared with data of laminar main flow. The model correlates very well with the original data of Shields and data of others and also matches empirical relations from literature. The model is suitable for incorporating exposure and protrusion levels and laminar main flow.

Abstract:
It is planned to use the highly corrosion resistant titanium grade 7 (Ti Gr 7) and a high strength titanium alloy (Ti Gr 29) to fabricate the drip shield for the Yucca Mountain repository. Ti Gr 7 contains 0.15% Palladium (Pd) to increase its corrosion performance, mainly under reducing conditions. It was important to determine the corrosion behavior of Ti Gr 7 in concentrated brines at temperatures higher than 100°C, which may represent the behavior of dust deliquescence solutions. Tests were performed in concentrated NaCl + KCl solutions containing also nitrates and fluorides. Results show that Ti Gr 7 was highly resistant to general and localized corrosion. Some specimens were polarized to potentials higher than 4 volts. None of the tightly creviced specimens suffered crevice corrosion. The presence of fluoride promoted localized corrosion around the edges of the crevice former.

Abstract:
The development of a numerical simulation has been demanded for improving the automobile wiper systems from the industrial viewpoints. It is widely known that, however, vibrations caused by the wiping motion cause a trouble of wiping. Several studies have been carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the wiper systems. However, the phenomena have not yet been theoretically analyzed. The purpose of this research is to develop a numerical simulation of the reversal behavior of a wiper blade. To begin with, the experiment was conducted with the real wiper systems to observe the reversal behavior of the wiper blade. After observing its motion, an analytical model was developed to essentially characterize the wiper systems. The model is composed of a multi-degree-of-freedom spring-mass system with restraint conditions to ensure the contact between a blade and a wind-shield at all time. The dynamic motion and the mechanism of the reversal behavior of the wiper blade were investigated by using nonlinear equations. Furthermore, the above phenomena were discussed using the nonlinear equations of the vibration of the wiper blade from the viewpoint of the nonlinear dynamics.
