Henricks, Thomas S. Play Compared to Other Behaviors. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039072.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter compares play with other behaviors in order to develop a general understanding of play. Before proceeding with the discussion of play v. other behaviors, it considers the six perspectives about play: play as action, play as interaction, play as activity, play as disposition, play as experience, and play as context. It then examines play's defining qualities by contrasting it to three similar but rival patterns of willfully directed behavior: work, ritual, and the form of bonding and immersion called communitas. These behaviors together with play are said to be distinctive “pathways of experience” featuring different acts of meaning-construction and self-expression. Each pathway is presented as an ideal type—first play, and then the other forms in comparison to play. Differences between the four forms are summarized and displayed in a chart. The chapter concludes by explaining how real-life events usually feature combinations of these four forms, as well as alternations in which one pattern leads to another.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses flutes and both unethical and ethical behavior. Many of the folktales presented in this book can be interpreted as pertaining to unethical or ethical human behavior, even when the main actors are animals. This is one of the main functions of folklore—to instruct humans in proper ethical behavior within its cultural boundaries. Many folktales could properly end, “The moral of this story is ...” However, their charm is often the aspect of leaving the interpretation of a moral up to the listener or reader of the story. The stories in this chapter deal with behaviors such as greed and honesty.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a commentary on Hal Hartley's film career. It begins with a biographical sketch based on material included in interviews, reviews, and essays about Hartley's work, and an earlier version of his official website, possiblefilms.com. It then moves on to analyze seven feature films: The Unbelievable Truth (1989), Trust (1990), Simple Men (1992), Amateur (1994), Henry Fool, Fay Grim (2006), and The Book of Life (1998). These films show that efficiency, estrangement, and antirealism allow Hartley to chart the struggles of individuals against the ideological precepts that pertain to public and private behavior, responsible actions, “common sense,” and the cinematic conventions that support such ideologies. (e.g., romantic characters who will live “happily ever after”).These conflicts are often related to the restrictions posed by gender norms and are depicted as conflicts with authority figures. Hartley's male protagonists struggle to live up to popular ideals of heteronormative masculinity, control, and violent mastery of the world around them, while his central female characters break from heteronormative conceptions of women as mothers, caregivers, and/or sexual objects.

Davidson, Roger. Illicit and Unnatural Practices. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474441193.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book seeks to chart how the Scottish legal system responded to what were deemed ‘illicit and unnatural practices’ after 1900. Using a wide range of prosecution and trial records, along with more recent newspaper coverage of court proceedings, it furnishes a fascinating insight into the relationship between the law, sex, and society in modern Scotland. Case studies of sex-related offences, including abortion, bestiality, brothel-keeping, child sexual assault, and wilful HIV transmission, reveal how far the legal process both reflected and reinforced contemporary moral panics and how far it was shaped by the interplay between law officers and forensic experts, by the prejudices of the local community and civic leaders, and by Scotland’s distinctive legal and moral identity. The law in practice is seen to have sustained important norms of sexual behaviour and masculinity along with an enduring double moral standard with respect to female sexuality. This volume thus affords a remarkable new perspective on the sexual behaviours and ideologies of Scottish society across the twentieth century and into the new millennium.

Abstract:
As fascinating as they are beautiful, butterflies are a pleasure to watch and an important group of invertebrates to study. This second edition of the award-winning book The Complete Field Guide to Butterflies of Australia is a fully updated guide to all butterfly species on Australia's mainland and remote islands. Written by one of Australia's leading lepidopterists, the book is stunningly illustrated with colour photographs, many of which are new, of each of the 435 currently recognised species. There is also a distribution map and flight chart for each species on the Australian mainland, together with information on similar species, variation, behaviour, habitat, status and larval food plants. The introduction to the book covers adult structure, higher classification, distribution and habitats, as well as life cycle and behaviour. A new chapter on collecting and preserving butterflies is included. There is also an updated checklist of all species, a glossary, a bibliography and indexes of common and scientific names.

Abstract:
With the passage of CoP21, the world is leaving a relatively inactive stage and entering a second stage characterized by broad-based efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A third stage of reductions will almost certainly be required. This should chart a feasible path to a stabilized climate and put in place the necessary policy architecture for following that path, marking a global tipping point where effective climate change mitigation is no longer a goal but an accepted fact, with broad implications for behaviour and decision-making, not least a massive reduction in the resources allocated to prospecting for new fossil fuel reserves. A clear proximate operational challenge for achieving this tipping point involves effective implementation of country Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) with attendant information needs. Looking further ahead, four key research frontiers are presented, focused on achieving this tipping point and entering the third stage of emissions reductions.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the governance ecology of China’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs). More specifically, it examines the mechanisms of state capitalism in China by analyzing the distinctive system of industrial organization in which the country’s largest SOEs were assembled and currently operate. After providing the conceptual background, the chapter charts the origins of Chinese corporate capitalism and how it is presently organized. It then considers the key components and main organizational characteristics of the national business groups and contrasts them with those in Japan and Korea. It also explores SASAC’s behavior as a controlling shareholder within the larger institutions of the party-state and how it shares the role of controlling shareholder with the Communist Party. Finally, it assesses the implications of the analysis for comparative corporate governance scholarship.

Abstract:
This chapter charts the passage of the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Act 2013. The Banking Reform Act was enacted in December 2013 and comprises of 8 parts and 10 schedules. The Act was intended to deliver on the government’s plan to create a more robust, better regulated and managed banking system, that supports the economy, customers and small businesses. The Banking Reform Act implemented the recommendations of the Independent Commission on Banking (on banking-sector structural reform) and the key recommendations of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards (on behaviour, culture, and professional standards within the banking industry). The Act amended the FSMA, the Insolvency Act 1986, and the Banking Act 2009. It also provided the legislative platform for an enhanced accountability regime within financial services.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 analyses the barriers that prevented informal bus workers from responding collectively to their criminalization and to the economic squeeze by their employers. Reflecting on the sources of workers’ power, the chapter shows how labour oversupply, its fragmentation amongst different ‘classes of labour’ performing different tasks, and geographical dispersion explain workers’ lack of effective collective response to their plight. The chapter also charts the forms and limits of existing workforce solidarity through a longitudinal study of the rise and fall (1998–2005) of a labour association by transport workers on one bus route. This study sheds light on workers’ strategies to negotiate precariousness and onto the tensions between different categories of workers. Access to the association’s membership records allows some appreciation of the patterns and rhythm of labour circulation within the sector, an important element in understanding both the precariousness faced by transport workers and their political behaviour.

Wilkinson, Benedict. Scripts of Terror. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197521892.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores terrorism as a strategic choice-- one made carefully and deliberately by rational actors. Through an analysis of the terrorist groups of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, this book charts a series of different strategic ‘scripts’ at play in terrorist behavior, from survival, to efforts in mobilizing a supporter base, through to the grinding attrition of a long terrorist campaign. The theme that runs through all the organizations is the unbridgeable gap between their strategic vision, and what actually unfolds. Regardless of which script terrorists follow, they often fall short of achieving their political ambitions. And yet, despite its frequent failure, the terrorist strategy is returned to time and again-- people continue to join such groups, and to commit mindless acts of violence. Scripts of Terror explores the reasons behind this. It asks why, if terrorism is so rarely successful and so hard to pull off, its approach remains an appealing one. And it examines how terrorists formulate their strategies, and how they envisage achieving their ambitions through violence. Most importantly, it explores why they so often fail.
