Resumo: O primeiro objetivo consiste em compreender e interpretar a teoria da sociedade de risco mundial elaborada por Ulrich Beck, de modo a deslindar os aspectos-chave que lhe permitem a caracterização de teoria. A definição desse objetivo como problema justifica-se pelo uso do ensaio como estratégia analítica/discursiva por parte do autor. Para tanto, a mediação teórica é estabelecida de forma imanente, definindo-se os conceitos reguladores da teoria, reflexividade e risco, como condutores da análise. As teses principais da teoria são assim delineadas, com seus dilemas específicos, inovações e possibilidades prático-teóricas. A partir disso, torna-se possível a crítica imanente, que por meio de proposições específicas, permite novas formulações conceituais, aqui circunscritas às seguintes questões: aspectos processuais do conceito de reflexividade; continuidade e descontinuidade na concepção de processo histórico-social; e a relação entre reflexividade, modernidade e incerteza, sob a perspectiva dos significados do devir social. Além dessas contribuições específicas, a pesquisa se justifica por abordar uma teoria sobre a qual não há críticas estabelecidas, apesar de sua difusão nos circuitos acadêmicos de uma sociologia globalizada, de suas contribuições significativas para a compreensão sociológica de problemas contemporâneos e das controvérsias que suscita no âmbito da justificação do argumento
Abstract: The first aim is to comprehend and interpret the theory of the world risk society, formulated by Ulrich Beck, in order to unravel the key aspects that allow its characterization as a theory. The definition of this main purpose as a research question is justified by the usage of the essay by the author as an analytical/discursive strategy. To achieve this goal, the theoretical mediation is established through an immanent perspective, in which the regulatory concepts of the theory, reflexivity and risk, are defined as the analytical conductors. The main theses of the theory are thus delineated according to their specific dilemmas, innovations and practical and theoretical possibilities. From this, the immanent critique becomes possible, allowing new conceptual formulations by means of specific propositions, which are related to the following issues: procedural aspects of the concept of reflexivity; continuity and discontinuity in the design of socio-historical process; and the relation between reflexivity, modernity and uncertainty, from the perspective of the meanings of social developments (devir social). Beyond these specific contributions, this research is justified by discussing a theory on which there is no critical review, despite its spread in the academic circuit of a global sociology, their significant contributions to the sociological comprehension of contemporary issues and also despite the controversies that the theory raises in the realm of the justification of the argument

Abstract:

The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is a popular screening and research instrument for measuring severity of depression. The instrument was translated to Portuguese for use in Brazil in 1979; however, it was not until recently that its psychometric properties have been tested empirically for the Brazilian population. The purpose of the present study was to explore the BDI's psychometric properties in a northern region of Brazil and to test for possible relationships between certain demographic variables and BDI outcomes. Samples used in this study were from an urban area in Roraima, the northernmost state of Brazil. The BDI showed adequate levels of internal consistency in nonclinical and clinical samples. Female respondents had significantly higher scores than male respondents. Those who had lower levels of education, income, or occupational status had significantly higher scores than those with higher levels of these variables. Adolescents had significantly higher scores than adults from all age groups except those from age 19 to 22. No significant difference was found between those who identified themselves as “indigenous” and those who identified themselves as “non-indigenous.” Regression analysis results showed that the combination of gender, education, and age best accounted for the variance in BDI scores. An ANCOVA revealed that clinically depressed adults had significantly higher BDI scores than nonclinically depressed adults. Factor analysis results showed that there were two main factors in the item structure for both female respondents and male and female respondents combined: one factor of mainly cognitive-affective items and the other factor of mainly somatic items. The results were discussed in terms of the future use of the BDI in Brazil.

Abstract:

This thesis consists of a thorough analysis and subsequent critical review of Ulrich Beck's cosmopolitan proposal. I basically challenge his three main normative assumptions: national secularism, community of risk and cosmopolitan empire. I do so by critically addressing his understanding of nations and nationalism from the perspective of the literature on minority nations. My approach offers a nuanced moral, political and legal understanding of Beck's cosmopolitan view. That is to say, the analytical review aims to highlight both the aspects of his proposal which I consider valuable as well as the aspects that need to be nuanced or criticised in order to strengthen his cosmopolitan account. The contribution of the thesis is to merge the normative cosmopolitan debates with the more accurate understanding of nations and nationalism offered by the literature on minority nations. In addition, it strengthens key aspects of Ulrich Beck’s proposal. The thesis addresses the interaction between the European Court of Human Rights and the United Kingdom as a case study to prove the extent to which Beck's cosmopolitan proposal offers a valid theoretical frame to address transnational challenges such as Human Rights protection.

Objective: Determine impact of interventions in a day-hospital clinic on emotional status of HIV/AIDS patients attended at the School Hospital of the Federal University of Pelotas. Methods: A before and after clinical assay was conducted with patients 17 years old or older who were included in the study after signing formal consent. Individuals answered, on their first interview, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and a pattern questionnaire about demographic and social-economic factors. Information regarding their illness and current medication was withdrawn from medical charts. At the end of their follow-up, patients answered again the BDI and the BAI. Patients initially classified as presenting minimum, mild, moderate or severe levels of depression and anxiety had their initial and final mean scores evaluated. Results: We included 64 HIV/AIDS patients in this study. The mean age (±SD) was 36 years (9,3). The mean time (±SD) between the first and second interview was 14 days (8,9). All depression levels and mild and moderate categories of anxiety presented reductions in scores with statistical significance (p< 0,05). Mean improvement of initial and final BDI scores was 7.03 points (95% CI 5,51-8,55) and for BAI scores, 6,23 points (95%CI 4,10-8,37). Conclusions: This study identified a favourable impact of the day-hospital clinic on HIV/AIDS patients emotional state without psychotherapeutic intervention.
Objetivo: Determinar impacto das intervenções um Hospital-Dia no estado emocional de pacientes HIV/AIDS atendidos no Hospital-Escola da Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Métodos: Um ensaio clínico antes e depois foi realizado com pacientes HIV/AIDS com idade mínima de 17 anos, os quais foram incluídos no estudo após assinatura de consentimento informado. Os entrevistados realizaram a primeira investigação através do Inventário de Depressão Beck (BDI) e Ansiedade Beck (BAI) e um questionário padrão sobre dados demográficos e sócio-econômicos. Dados referentes à doença e medicações foram obtidos de prontuário médico. Ao final do atendimento no HD, pacientes responderam novamente ao BDI e BAI. Avaliou-se o escore médio inicial e final dos pacientes que inicialmente encontravam-se nos níveis mínimo, leve, moderado e grave tanto para depressão quanto para ansiedade. Resultados: Foram incluídos no estudo 64 pacientes HIV/AIDS. A idade média foi de 36 anos (dp 9,3); O tempo médio entre a primeira e a segunda entrevista foi de 14 dias (dp 8,9). Todos os níveis de depressão e as categorias leve e moderada, referentes à ansiedade, apresentaram redução dos escores com significância estatística (p<0,05). A melhora média dos escores iniciais e finais do BDI foi de 7,03 pontos (95% IC 5,51-8,55) e do BAI de 6,23 pontos (95% IC 4,10-8,37). Conclusões: Este estudo identificou um impacto favorável do Hospital-Dia no estado emocional dos pacientes HIV/AIDS acompanhados no serviço sem a realização de intervenção psicoterápica.

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo inventariar as teses sobre personalidade de Aaron Beck e realizar uma análise em relação ao estado em que se encontra a teoria da personalidade de sua abordagem. O campo teórico da Terapia Cognitiva é um tanto negligenciado e possui ainda muitas lacunas, sendo o da teoria da personalidade uma das principais. Para analisar o estado atual do problema na TC, primeiramente descrevemos alguns critérios de teoria científica e da personalidade, além de apresentar brevemente uma discussão e histórico sobre o conceito de personalidade e suas teorias. Posteriormente descrevemos as teses de Beck a partir dos modelos que ele apresentou ao longo de sua obra, sendo o primeiro deles o modelo de depressão, que foi elaborado inicialmente por Beck para explicar e tratar pacientes deprimidos, o segundo o modelo de psicopatologia, em que o autor propõe uma expansão da teoria original para outros transtornos psiquiátricos com poucas alterações na estrutura teórica básica, e o terceiro o modelo modal, sua recente proposta teórica com a apresentação e incorporação de novos conceitos e hipóteses à teoria original, que surge como tentativa de resolver alguns problemas levantados por Beck e seus críticos. Por fim, realizamos a avaliação das teses encontradas. Concluímos que apesar de as teses de Beck sobre personalidade serem relevantes e consistentes, não constituem ainda uma teoria da personalidade completa, pois existem nela lacunas importantes. As principais delas se referem ao posicionamento em relação a uma teoria da motivação e a uma teoria explícita de funcionamento da personalidade não patológica.
This research aims to survey the Aaron Beck’s thesis about personality and analyse the state of the theory of personality in his approach. The theoretical framework of Cognitive Therapy is somewhat neglected and still has many gaps, especially in personality theory. To analyze the current state of this problem in the Cognitive Therapy, we first described some criteria of scientific theory and personality theory, and briefly present a discussion about the concept of personality and its theories. Later we described Beck's thesis from the models he showed throughout his work, the first of them, his model of depression, which was originally developed by Beck to explain and treat depressed patients.The second, the psychopathology model , in which the author proposes an expansion of the original theory to other psychiatric disorders with little change in the basic theoretical framework, and the third is the modal model, his recent theoretical proposal in which he presented and incorporated new concepts and hypotheses to the original theory. This model appears as an attempt to solve some problems in TC raised by Beck himself and by his critics. Finally, we evaluate the thesis found. We conclude that although Beck's thesis about personality are relevant and consistent, don't constitute a complete theory of personality, because of important gaps. The main of them refer to a lack of a theory of motivation and an explicit theory of nonpathological personality.

Este trabalho objetiva expor a teoria da modernidade reflexiva elaborada de forma mais precisa por Ulrich Beck e Anthony Giddens, buscando compreender os contornos de tal proposta e seus possíveis limites. Abstract:

The cognitive theory / therapy (CT) produced profound changes in psychiatry and psychology contributing thus to treat a variety of disorders. In diagnostic terms, the CT use psychometric scales and other instruments. For example, in 1961, Beck developed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) revised in 1978 (BDI-1A) and in 1996 the BDI-II was published. In 2001, the Beck Youth Inventory (BYI-II) was prepared for children and adolescents aged 7-18 years consisting of an inventory of five scales that assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behavior and self-concept. The aim of this work was to construct a systematic review of national and international scientific production of the Beck Depression Inventory for Youth (BDI-Y), the Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth (BAI-Y) and the Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth (BDBI-Y); furthermore, we considered studies that employ these tools in the clinical area and overall health. The review was carried from the use of descriptors: Beck Depression Inventory for Youth , Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth and Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth . The references selection criteria were: presence of the descriptor in the text, articles written in English, Spanish and Portuguese; repeated references in other databases will be selected only in one base; references that were related to the theme, with the guiding criterion focus on using the BAI-Y , the BDI-Y and BDBI-Y. The results were: following criteria for inclusion, 11 articles, with the descriptor \"Beck Depression Inventory for Youth\"; with the descriptor \"Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth\", 11 studies were selected. Already with the descriptor \"Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth\" were selected only three references. Therefore, undertake a review of the scientific production of three inventories Beck Youth Inventory (BYI-II) was essential to verify the scarcity of studies about BDI-Y, BAI-Y and BDBI-Y. Results show no Brazilian studies, most are from the United States and only one reference reported use of Beck Inventories, second edition, adapted and validated for the Chinese reality. These results can contribute to raising awareness about the need to researchers to continue this discussion, considering the great necessity of their inclusion in research and research development with emphasis on studies of the psychometric properties of these instruments and their appropriateness to the Brazilian reality. Finally, with the guarantee of further studies, will be possible to evaluate the competence of this scales and their utility in the academic and clinical community.
A teoria/terapia cognitiva (TC) promoveu profundas mudanças na psiquiatria e psicologia colaborando, assim, para o tratamento de uma ampla variedade de transtornos. Em termos diagnósticos, a TC faz uso de escalas psicométricas e de outros instrumentos. Por exemplo, em 1961, Beck desenvolveu as Escalas de Depressão de Beck (BDI) revisadas em 1978 (BDI-1A) e em 1996 a BDI-II foi publicada. Em 2001, elaborou o Beck Youth Inventory - (BYI-II) para crianças e adolescentes com idades entre 7 a 18 anos, que consiste em um inventário de cinco escalas que avaliam os sintomas de depressão, ansiedade, raiva, comportamento disruptivo e autoconceito. O objetivo deste trabalho foi construir uma revisão sistemática da produção científica nacional e internacional do Beck Depression Inventory for Youth (BDI-Y), do Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth (BAI-Y) e do Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth (BDBI-Y); além disso, foram considerados estudos que empregam esses instrumentos na área clínica e da saúde em geral. A revisão foi realizada a partir da utilização dos descritores: Beck Depression Inventory for Youth ; Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth e Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth . Os critérios de seleção da amostra foram: presença do descritor no corpo do texto; artigos escritos na língua inglesa, espanhola e portuguesa; referências repetidas em outras bases foram selecionadas apenas em uma base; referências que estavam relacionadas ao tema, tendo como critério norteador do estudo o enfoque sobre o uso do BAI-Y, do BDI-Y e do BDBI-Y. Após critérios de inclusão, os resultados obtidos foram: 11 artigos, com o descritor Beck Depression Inventory for Youth ; com o descritor Beck Anxiety Inventory for Youth , 11 estudos foram selecionados. Já com o descritor Beck Disruptive Behavior Inventory for Youth foram selecionadas apenas 3 referências. Portanto, empreender uma revisão da produção científica de três inventários do Beck Youth Inventory (BYI-II) foi essencial para tornar possível a verificação da escassez de estudos para os inventários BDI-Y, BAI-Y e BDBI-Y. Os resultados mostram que nenhuma referência nacional foi encontrada, a maioria é oriunda dos Estados Unidos da América e apenas uma referência relatou o uso dos Inventários Beck, segunda edição, adaptados e validados para a realidade chinesa. Esses resultados podem contribuir para um maior esclarecimento acerca da necessidade de pesquisadores darem continuidade a esta discussão, considerando a grande necessidade da inclusão destes instrumentos em trabalhos de pesquisa e o desenvolvimento de investigações com ênfase em estudos das propriedades psicométricas desses inventários e de sua adequação à realidade brasileira. Por fim, com a realização de mais estudos, torna-se possível avaliar a eficácia destas escalas e sua utilidade na comunidade acadêmica e clínica.

Relacionar o pensamento do autor com a questão da globalização no âmbito do contexto das relações internacionais. Partindo de uma perspectiva crítica, analisar a teoria da sociedade do risco num contexto global, caracterizando-a e expondo os riscos a ela associados. Desenvolvendo o conceito de modernização reflexiva, Beck analisa os novos problemas da sociedade. Problemas esses, desencadeados pela hegemonia do poder económico, muitas vezes controlados pelo poder político e constantemente afrontados pelos riscos globais e democráticos. Pretende-se analisar o fenómeno da globalização. A definição de globalização e as suas principais características. Abstract:

Anxiety and depression are two disorders frequently diagnosed in adults. Given serious adverse affects such as physical health problems, interpersonal relationship difficulties, and suicide, differentiation in treatment of these often comorbid disorders is a necessity in providing appropriate care. The tripartite model of anxiety and depression (Clark & Watson, 1991) proposes that these disorders are linked by a common trait (Negative Affect) and differentiated by a trait common to depression (lack of Positive Affect) and a trait common to anxiety (Physiological Hyperarousal). The Clinical Assessment of Depression (CAD; Bracken & Howell, 2004), a recently published selfreport narrow-band measure of depression, includes a measure of anxiety related symptoms in its subscale structure. This study explores the validity of the CAD with two established measures: the Beck Depression Inventory – II (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck, & Steer, 1993). College students of 18 to 52 years of age (n = 295) enrolled in undergraduate courses in psychology at a south central Kentucky university provided the study data. These individuals were divided into nonclinical and clinical samples based on self disclosure of a clinical diagnosis to examine differences between groups. Strong positive correlations (above r = .60) between similar CAD scales and total scores on the BAI and BDI-II supported convergent validity for the nonclinical sample. All comparisons supported convergent validity for the clinical sample except the correlation between the BDI-II Total Score and the CAD - Depressed Mood subscale (r = .56). Weak to moderate correlations (r = 0.0 to .59) between dissimilar scales supported divergent validity for all dissimilar comparisons in both samples except the correlation between the BDI-II and the CAD-Anxiety/Worry subscale in the nonclinical sample (r = .66). Hotelling-Williams t-tests were performed to compare correlations of similar and dissimilar constructs. Significant results emerged most comparisons in the nonclinical group support the use of the CAD diagnostic assessment. However, nonsignificant findings for the CAD Anxiety/Worry subscale indicate that this measure lacks the ability to aid diagnose significant levels of anxiety. Only one significant difference between correlations was found for the clinical sample with the CAD – Diminished Interest subscale evidencing significantly stronger correlations with the BDI-II than the BAI. The lack of significant differences for the other CAD scales is discussed relative to the small clinical sample size and the heterogeneity of disorders represented. Results support the use of the CAD as an adequate diagnostic tool for depression with college students. Results did not support the use of the CAD in differential diagnosis of anxiety with college students within the framework of the tripartite model. Implications of the findings are discussed to aid in practice and to suggest further research.

While many authors (Washburn, 2005; Newman, Couturier, Scurry, 2004; Kirp, 2004; Bok, 2003; Wolff and Bryan, 1999) have written about their belief that American higher education is moving toward a market orientation, limited studies have been published citing the actual practice or success/failure of an institution(s) demonstrating market orientation qualities. The purpose of this study was to determine if two selected public Carnegie High Research Activity institutions were utilizing market orientation practices (Jaworksi and Kohli, 1993; Narver and Slater, 2000) as evidenced in their organizational culture, to enhance undergraduate recruitment and retention strategies. Through case study research design the research questions queried whether a market orientation was present or emerging at two public Carnegie High Research Activity Institutions. Further, the study attempted to determine if an organizational culture could influence market orientation practices relevant to institutional recruitment and retention outcomes. Based upon the findings and the resulting conclusions, it appeared a market orientation does positively affect retention outcomes at both institutions. Further, in these two instances, it does appear that an organizational culture can affect the "market orientation-ness" of the institution. The findings do not indicate there is conclusive evidence of a market oriented recruitment focus, with the exception of University B's effort to recruit specific and targeted groups.

Abstract:

The central purpose of poetic techniques in nature films remains under-analyzed and the realm of spiritual motivations in filmic techniques under-explored. In this paper I examine historical and recent attitudes toward nature and the spiritual, highlighting in particular the work of Existentialists, and use those contexts to critique several broad categories of nature films. I find that all types of nature films, to varying degrees, contain a poetic impulse and often a secular spiritual motivation. I conclude that nature films, when carefully crafted, can be highly imperfect, yet highly potent proxies for spiritual experiences in nature.
