Abstract:
This e-special issue of Theory, Culture & Society showcases work published in the journal by and about the late German sociologist Ulrich Beck (1944–2015). Beck became known as a pioneering and inventive thinker, continuously engaged in a quest to capture the essence of the modern age, whilst simultaneously wrestling with the upcoming horizons of the future. During his career, he was responsible for developing some of the defining sociological concepts of the late 20th and early 21st century, including risk, reflexive modernization, individualization and cosmopolitanism. He published many articles in Theory, Culture & Society, inspiring acolytes to mobilize his ideas and provoking critics to dispute them. Complementing articles written by Beck, this collection also includes critical commentaries, applications of his work, a selection of interviews and several reflective pieces which consider his legacy. The key aspiration of this special issue is to encourage contemplation on both the richness and the range of Ulrich Beck’s academic contribution. The contents stimulate reflection on the intricacies of Beck’s method of inquiry and flag up ways in which his work can influence the future trajectory of social theory.

Abstract:
The epoch of the Anthropocene is on the verge of becoming scientifically acknowledged by the science of Geology. In what way does this concern Philosophy? In this paper, we evaluate how the new concept of the Anthropocene contrasts with the classical concept of Nature, aiming to identify the territory of both. In order to do this we take as our starting point the approach of Francis Bacon (1561-1626) which separates God and Nature. This later translated into the separation of Nature and Culture. The latter dualism is contested by Philippe Descola (b.1942) who defends the convergence of both. Bruno Latour (b.1947) and Timothy Morton (b.1968) consider the concept of nature as obsolete. Ulrich Beck (1944-2015), Erie C. Ellis and Mark Lynas (b.1973) claim that science will be able to cope with whatever changes the Anthropocene brings. We consider that all these claims, albeit apparently contrasting, are grounded in belief and as a counter-proposal we aim to bring to the table the concept of spirituality as essential to re-evaluate what Nature is today in the light of the Anthropocene.

Abstract:
Ulrich Beck (1944-2015), çağdaş toplumsal düşüncenin en etkili sosyologlarından biriydi. Onun risk toplumu, refleksif modernleşme, bireyselleşme ve kozmopolitanizm teorileri; çağdaş sosyolojiye yapmış olduğu katkıların başında gelir. Beck’in din sosyolojisine katkısı ise sosyoloji kadar kapsamlı değildir. Buna rağmen sosyoloji mirasının geniş teorik çerçevesi ve özellikle son dönemlerinde ele aldığı A God of one’s own adlı kitabı, dinin çağdaş toplumdaki rolünün anlaşılmasında önemli katkılar sağlamaktadır.

Abstract:
The subject of this doctorate is strictly speaking a criticism of the aristocratic reason in the cosmopolitique field, it is - to say the criticism of a reason who gives the right as and as duty to substitute itself for the sociogenèse of the political cultures to supply a political culture adapted to the globalization and to its risks. To lead (drive) such a company, it is naturally advisable of to produce a first criticism of the literature, in particular the theories of Hans Jonas, Jean-Pierre Dupuy, Ulrich Beck, Jürgen Habermas but beyond an elaborate criticism, this work tries essentially to recognize and to exceed (overtake) the contradictions of the aristocratic reason by proposing the foundations of an intuitive political science

Abstract:
This dissertation has been made in the fields of Environmental Philosophy and Political Philosophy and intends to examine the thought of Ulrich Beck, German sociologist and author of the book entitled Risk Society. Taking the concept of Risk Society developed by Beck, we try to investigate the way the presence of risk in contemporary societies, industrially developed societies ruled by uncertainty and insecurity due to rising of environmental and technological threats of global scope and whose effects can't be totally predicted, has led to fundamental changes in the main authorities in charge of the project of Modernity science, technology and politics -, causing a breakthrough with the fundamental thesis of modern thought, mainly with its technocientific paradigm started in the 17th century by Francis Bacon and Descartes, compelling the present moment of Modernity to a critical confrontation with the harmful consequences of its countless victories, something that Beck calls Reflexive Modernization. In the presence of threats with a global scope, the solution to the problems of Risk Society can only be international cooperation on the level of political institutions. Being so, on the second part of this dissertation, we focus our attention in Cosmopolitanism, as an essential element of a new political culture in the age of globalization, and Europe, as a model of transnational institutions, can contribute to the solution of the several threats faced by contemporary society.
