Abstract:
In the 1870's the beaver (Castor fiber), population in Sweden had been exterminated. Thebeaver was reintroduced to Sweden from the Norwegian population between 1922 and 1939.Today the population has recovered and it is estimated that the population of C. fiber in all ofEurope today ranges around 639,000 individuals. The main aim with this study was toinvestigate if there was any difference in species diversity between sites located upstream anddownstream of beaver ponds. I found no significant difference in species diversity betweenthese sites and the geographical location of the streams did not affect the species diversity. This means that in future studies it is possible to consider all streams to be replicates despiteof geographical location. The pond age and size did on the other hand affect the speciesdiversity. Young ponds had a significantly higher diversity compared to medium-aged ponds.Small ponds had a significantly higher diversity compared to medium-sized and large ponds. The upstream and downstream reaches did not differ in terms of CPOM amount but somewater chemistry variables did differ between them. For the functional feeding groups I onlyfound a difference between the sites for predators, which were more abundant downstream ofthe ponds.

Daugiau, kaip 80 % hidrografinio tinklo Lietuvoje sudaro melioracijos kanalai. Daugiau kaip 30 % bebrų populiacijos gyvena šiuose kanaluose. Bebrų veikla neretai trikdo normalų melioracijos sistemų funkcionavimą. Tyrimui pasirinktos dviejuose skirtinguose kraštovaizdžiuose esančios bebravietės (Molėtų bei Panevėžio rajonuose). Šiame darbe buvo tiriama bebraviečių tankumas, pasiskirstymas, erdvinės charakteristikos bei statybinės veiklos intensyvumas melioracijos kanaluose. Nustatytas bebrų poveikio mastas bei šio masto pokyčiai. Ištirtose teritorijose bebrų veikiama pusė melioracijos kanalų linijinio ilgio. Per 10 metų (1995-2005) bebraviečių skaičius melioracijos kanaluose praktiškai nepakito, taigi nekito ir melioracijos sistemoms daromas poveikis.
More than 80 % of hydro-graphical network in Lithuania is composed of drainage channels. More than 30 % of beaver populations in Lithuania live in drainage channels. Beaver activity often dislocates irrigations systems. This research was taken in two different landscapes. Beaver sites were visited in Moletai and Panevezys districts. Density, spread, dimensions and constructional activity were recorded in drainage channels. Also this study shows influence over the environment of changing number in beaver populations. Half of linear lengths of irrigation systems are influenced by beaver activity. The number of beaver sites did not change in a ten year period (1995-2005) as well as did not change the damage caused by beaver activity.

Jones, Kevin Christopher. "Ecological effects of the feeding and construction activities of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) in Scotland : implications for reintroduction." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/211.

Abstract:
Beavers have been described as a “keystone species” and “ecosystem engineers”, and in this dual role have great potential to physically modify their environment through tree-felling, foraging and construction activities. The resultant change in habitat heterogeneity can affect the flora and fauna that share the habitat with them. There has been recent interest in reintroducing the Eurasian beaver to the United Kingdom after an absence of over 400 years. To date, no research (aside from this thesis) has focussed on beaver ecology and behaviour in Scotland. This study has investigated the ecological effects of a small number of beavers in two enclosed but semi-natural Scottish sites at Bamff in Perthshire. The research conducted over a three-year period, with particular emphasis on the effects of tree-felling, foraging and construction activities. Trees were felled for both dietary and construction purposes, with felling rates being influenced by habitat availability, quality and the degree of habitat modification required. Highest rates were evident during the initial colonisation period of marginal sites (c. >300 trees / beaver / calendar year), and lowest rates in later years of occupation of more optimal sites (c. 55 – 70 trees / beaver / calendar year). Preferences were generally for willow and aspen trees, with conifers almost entirely avoided, and smaller trees preferred over larger ones. Proximity of trees to waterbodies was also an important factor, with nearer trees favoured, and generally most felling occurred within 50 m of water. Such behaviour followed the principles of optimal central place foraging. These preferences were less predictable however when intense construction activity was undertaken, with larger trees preferred and generic preferences for deciduous trees apparently invalid. In such cases, close proximity to the construction site was of prime importance. Increased cover of herbaceous plant species was observed in beaver-created canopy gaps in riparian woodland, whilst macrophyte diversity within waterbodies increased slightly in areas of herbaceous grazing. The diversity of terrestrial ground invertebrates was highest in areas of heavy tree-felling, and invertebrate richness and abundance was greatest in areas of herbaceous grazing under an intact tree-canopy. Furthermore, the abundance, diversity and richness of macroinvertebrate communities were increased by beaver-generated woody debris in ponds and streams. Overall, 30% of all macroinvertebrate species collected were found only in beaver-affected areas, due to the refugia and food supply provided by beaver dams, caches and lodges, as well as hydrological effects of these structures. These results are discussed with reference to future plans to return the beaver to Scotland. The habitat usage and modification of riparian ecosystems in northern Britain is likely to be similar to that found in this study, and the results are believed to be relevant, applicable and transferable to many areas of Scotland.

Shew, Ashley. "Beaver Dams, Spider Webs, and the Sticky Wicket: An Investigation On What Counts as Technology and What Counts as Knowledge." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32812.

Abstract:
Philosophers of technology have often considered only the tools and processes used and conducted by humans, but natural structures and man-made structures are not always easily discernable from one another. The complexity of a spider web is not matched by many human-made technologies. Beaver dams, beehives, and ant hills are great creations made by non-human animals. Davis Baird has argued that our scientific instruments bear knowledge in important ways, and the idea of technological knowledge bears interestingly on discussions of natural artifacts. Baird thinks his argument for instruments bearing knowledge can be extended, but how far can it be taken? Do â naturalâ technologies, like spider webs, bear technological knowledge of some sort? This move to consider whether natural artifacts might bear knowledge rubs interestingly against current definitions of technology which include human agency or progression as important. If we find that some natural artifacts seem to bear knowledge in the way Baird describes, technological knowledge would not be the exclusive domain of humans. Our current definitions of technology seem incongruent with our view of knowledge and our knowledge of natural artifacts. The purpose of this paper is to sort out the inconsistencies between current philosophical literature on knowledge and on technology. In sorting out the inconsistencies we find, I recommend a spectrum approach with regard to technology based on the epistemological status of the artifact. Using observations from anthropology and biology, I suggest a scale with regard to technological behavior, tool use, and technology.

Abstract:
Characterizing features that influence beaver (Castor Canadensis) to select a site to construct a dam may have important implications for managing damage to select stands of bottomland hardwood forest by beaver activity. This study was initiated to determine and develop a quick and simple approach for managers to determine areas of most concern. Advanced Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) was collected for the study area in November of 2009. The study utilized software that has been developed to extract topographic features from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The extracted data was used to identify landscape variables to try and specify presence, future presence, and suitability of an area to support dam sites. This study, however, found that the development and use of such advanced LiDAR and DEM creation was error prone, which resulted in errors in the metrics that were calculated relative to the DEM.

Hafen, Konrad. "To What Extent Might Beaver Dam Building Buffer Water Storage Losses Associated with a Declining Snowpack?" DigitalCommons@USU, 2017. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6503.

Full text
Abstract:
Dam building activity by North American Beaver (Castor canadensis) alters the timing and delivery of stream water and facilitates groundwater infiltration, overall increasing natural water storage behind and adjacent to dams. At the stream reach scale, increased water storage often alters hydrologic regimes by attenuating annual, and storm-event hydrographs, and increasing base flows. In the montane west, the most important water storage reservoirs are not human-made dams, but mountain snowpack, which slowly releases water through a mix of runoff and infiltration. Given estimates of decreasing snowpack with warming temperatures, beaver dams could provide a conceptually similar function to snowpack by delaying the delivery of precipitation by increasing surface and groundwater storage, thus lengthening residence time as water travels downstream. However, lack of predictive methods for modeling storage increases associated with relatively small magnitude beaver ponds at large spatial scales has precluded further investigation of this hypothesis. I address this knowledge gap by supplementing existing empirical data regarding the height of beaver dams and implement these empirical height distributions to develop the Beaver Dam Surface Water Estimation Algorithm (Chapter 2), a predictive model estimating beaver pond water storage that can be applied spatially at large scales. I then apply this model to estimate potential surface water storage and parameterize a groundwater model to estimate resulting groundwater storage increases for the entire Bear River basin under four different beaver dam capacity scenarios (Chapter 3). Estimated water storage changes from beaver dams are presented in the context of expected reductions in average annual maximum snow water equivalent, and existing and proposed reservoir storage within the basin. While the water storage provided by beaver dams is only a small fraction of expected snow water equivalent loss, it is not insubstantial and may prove beneficial for ecosystems where human-made reservoirs are not available to regulate hydrologic regimes. These results also stress the importance of further research examining how the cumulative effects of dams may affect the timing of runoff under changing precipitation regimes.

Voorhees, Jacob Isaac. "Structure of Collisional Metamorphism, Soft-Sediment Deformation, and Low-Angle Normal Faulting in the Beaver Dam Mountains." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8698.

Full text
Abstract:
Precambrian metamorphic rocks in the Beaver Dam Mountains display asymmetric, isoclinal folds with consistent fold axes plunging to the NW. These folds are parasitic and have a recursive nature that occurs on wavelengths from centimeters to perhaps kilometers as part of a NW-SE striking shear zone. The vergence of the folds indicates oblique shearing with a transport direction plunging 29° to the south. This shear zone may be associated with the collision of Yavapai Province island arcs with Laurentia. Structurally overlying, and adjacent to the metamorphic rocks are allochthonous and attenuated Mississippian limestone blocks and other strata debated to be either the result of mega-landsliding or fragments of the hanging wall rocks above a low-angle normal fault. We document previously unreported cataclastic damage zones tens of meters thick, an anastomosing zone of greenschist facies alteration hundreds of meters thick, and polished low-angle fault surfaces beneath these blocks. Other observations previously used to support a mega-landslide hypothesis are blocks of Redwall Limestone structurally overlying what was interpreted as Tertiary conglomerate. However, this contact is depositional, and the conglomerate is likely a sedimentary breccia facies of the Mississippian Redwall Limestone which is documented in several locations within the region. Additionally, some of the deformation and attenuation that was wrongly attributed to mega-landsliding or low-angle normal faulting is due to previously undocumented soft-sediment deformation. This deformation was gravity driven and accommodated by ductile granular flow, resulting in recumbent folds within the Mississippian Redwall Limestone and a prominent non-brittle detachment surface between the Redwall Limestone and the Cambrian Bonanza King Formation at Castle Cliff. This detachment was previously interpreted as the Castle Cliff Detachment, a low-angle normal fault, or as the slip surface of a landslide.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The numerical simulation of steam generators of pressurized water reactors is a complex problem, involving different flow regimes and a wide range of length and time scales. An accidental scenario may be associated with very fast variations of the flow with an important Mach number. In contrast in the nominal regime the flow may be stationary, at low Mach number. Moreover whatever the regime under consideration, the array of U-tubes is modelled by a porous medium in order to avoid taking into account the complex geometry of the steam generator, which entails the issue of the coupling conditions at the interface with the free-fluid.We propose a new pressure-correction scheme for cell-centered finite volumes for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes and Euler equations at all Mach number. The existence of a discrete solution, the consistency of the scheme in the Lax sense and the positivity of the internal energy were proved. Then the scheme was extended to the homogeneous two-phase flow models of the GENEPI code developed at CEA. Lastly a multigrid-AMR algorithm was adapted for using our pressure-correction scheme on adaptive grids.Regarding the second issue addressed in this work, an extension to the Beavers-Joseph law was proposed for the convective regime. By introducing a jump in the kinetic energy at the interface, we recover an interface condition close to the Beavers-Joseph law but with a non-linear slip coefficient, which depends on the free-fluid velocity at the interface and on the Darcy velocity. The validity of this new transmission condition was assessed with direct numerical simulations at different Reynolds numbers

Fabris, Alberto. Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSEN074/document.

Full text
Abstract:
My PhD dissertation aims at analysing the concept of desire in relation to Giordano Bruno’s philosophy. Despite the relatively marginal place of this issue among secondary bibliography and its not immediately evident presence in Bruno’s works, I think that this kind of research can open apertinent and radical perspective on Bruno’s thought. Far from being a secondary aspect, the desire is at the core of Giordano Bruno’s philosophy and it embodies its immanent rhythm. In relation to the fundamental theme of Bruno’s philosophy – the way in which the finite realises the infinite – the question of desire can disclose to us new perspectives. I have looked at this problem from many perspectives, always attentive to express the systematic character under the great varieties of topicswe can find in the Nolana filosofia. I have proceeded diachronically, privileging a conceptual approach rather than a chronological account of Bruno’s thought. First, I have considered the Lampas triginta statuarum, a late Latin treatise in which the desire appears as the force that leads the tenebræ toexpress the infinity of forms they contain in potentiality. In the cosmological dialogues in Italian, the desire – immanent force that assures planets’ revolutions (and in that way the cycle of seasons andcivilisations) – realises in all the beings the vicissitude that allows it to “be everything and becomeeverything”. The comedy The Candle Bearer shows how the pursuit of a static, obsessional, andunnatural desire causes the loss of the three main characters. We can find the same “civil afflatus” inthe magical treatise De vinculis where the magic-philosopher builds through love (“the most powerfullink”) a republic that, through its citizens, reflects the infinite power of nature. Lastly, we will see how, in The Heroic Frenzies, the cognitive desire that allows the metamorphosis of the hunter Acteon in nature corresponds to the most human way to realise the infinite

Abstract:
We try to answer the question: How do sciences refer to entities that are deemed "real", extralinguistic? The problem is two-fold: (i) What linguistic tools do sciences use in order to establish and ensure the relation of reference? (ii) What kinds of entities (individuals, classes ans classes of classes) do sciences refer to? Our enquiry takes the form of a linguistic analysis of the language of the natural sciences. The first step consists of a study of the structure of classifications. Actually, the scientific lexicons of entities have a distinctive feature: they are involved in formal systems, that is say, in nomenclatures. We purport to establish that Russell's theory of types provides a sound account of such systems. The 2nd and 3rd parts examine those standarized and codified vocabularies found in sciences. We first relate the origin of biological and chemical nomenclatures from Linnaeus to Lavoisier. We then present the nomenclatural and taxonomic debates conducted in the 2nd half of 20th century in systematic biology. This presentation focuses on the "nomenclatural type" or "name-bearer" as the major methodological tool by which biology fixes the reference of species's names. We conclude by comparing the nomenclatural type with the "stereotype" elaboratd by Putnam in the context of the causal theory of reference, and we try to determinate if and to what extend this theory can be useful in order to throw light on reference in the language of the natural sciences

Abstract:
The analysis of the convict's dignity while serving their custodial sentences implies to study the conditions in which they serve their penalties when incarcerated in a prison establishment on the one hand, then the conditions in which they carry out their sentences when out of prison on the other hand. However, if the convict's dignity is respected or negated, it depends in both cases on how the adaptation and proportionality of the infringement of their primary human features are assessed according to a legitimate public interest. As a result, if more human detention conditions allow to ensure that the convict's dignity is gradually respected, the fact that they are encouraged to bear more responsibility and are again considered human beings enables them to promote their dignity by stimulating their human potential powers of improvement. The post-detention stage (when the custodial sentence is served out of prison) seems to evince an opposite trend. As a matter of fact, if the creation and implementation of measures of sentence reduction seemed to guarantee the respect and the promotion of the convict's dignity, the introduction of a “code of conviction” of state surveillance over the convict in the post-detention stage entails a negation of the convict's dignity as their autonomy has been infringed in a way totally inadapted to the aim of preventing second-offence crime

McKenna, Gord, Marie Keys, Meer Terry van, Larry Roy, and Les Sawatsky. "The impact of beaver dams on the design and construction of reclaimed mine sites." 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10380.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1990 failure of the Matachewan Consolidated Gold tailings dam in Ontario should have been a wake-up call to the mining industry. Beavers blocked the spillway of this abandoned tailings darn causing the reservoir to overtop, and toxic tailings to be released into the Ottawa River. Almost ten years later, most miners remain unaware of the risk of beaver darns to post-closure landscapes. There is little guidance about how to assess the risk of beaver dams and how to design reclaimed landscapes to endure beaver activity. As part of its investigations into creating sustainable landscapes at its oils sands mining operations, Synerude Canada Ltd. conducted an interdisciplinary study of beaver dams in northeastern Alberta. The program included observations from visits to over 70 beaver dams and 29 lake outlets, cataloguing of 784 dams from aerial photographs, and review of over 350 books and articles on beaver behaviour. The program confirmed that beaver activity, especially dam building, has a profound effect on the natural landscape. Beaver dams block streams and lake outlets, attenuate flows, divert streams, flood large areas, trap sediment, create beaver meadows, trigger landslides, and significantly alter the boreal forest ecology. Beaver dams can reach three to four metres high and be over a kilometer long - no stream is too small to dam and few rivers are too large. Large dams can be constructed in just a few days and can be repaired overnight. Beaver colonies can consume up to a hectare of deciduous forest per year and a beaver pond can affect tens of hectares of forest. Outburst flooding of abandoned beaver dams has caused numerous cases of damage to infrastructure. Reclaimed landscapes must be designed to encourage, discourage, or, in most cases, accommodate beaver behaviour. The cost of building landscapes to accommodate beavers can be significant, although retrofitting previously reclaimed areas is even more expensive. Even given the best design and construction, residual risks remain owing to extreme beaver behaviour and the prohibitive cost of designing for all risks. Because beaver behaviour varies geographically, a local study of dams would be required to adapt landscape design parameters for mines in other regions.

Abstract:
Understanding the relationship between heterogeneity, biodiversity and ecosystem function is an active focus of ecological research that has direct applications to the formulation of sustainable, science-based, watershed conservation plans. Here, I applied ecological theory on heterogeneity to the expansion of North American beaver to test hypotheses about physical habitat and fish biodiversity at a riverscape scale. To test these hypotheses (Chapter 4), I first addressed two methodological issues (Chapter 2, 3). By evaluating three types of gear at three levels of effort in a randomized block design over 4 replicate days, I show that 10 minnow traps, 2 hoop nets and 20 m of electrofishing captured most fish species within a 30-m sampling area (Chapter 2). Multiple statistical measures provided similar information, therefore I used general indices (richness, diversity), ecological guilds (flow based), and select multivariate analyses (DCA) to summarize fish communities (Chapter 3). I used these methodological insights to test ecological hypotheses by collecting habitat and fish data at all beaver dams (n = 15) and select control sites (n = 9) in Fish Brook, a coastal watershed in northeastern Massachusetts. From these data, I gained six basic and applied insights. First, beaver dams were distributed throughout the stream network. Second, at a local scale, beaver dams created more habitat heterogeneity than control sites. Specifically, beaver dams created four types of habitat alterations based on upstream-downstream differences in stream width, depth, velocity, and substrate. Third, richness and diversity of fish species around beaver dams were linked to habitat heterogeneity. Fourth, the mechanisms by which beaver dams altered fish biodiversity were mediated through habitat changes at the beaver dam patch boundary. Upstream of the dam macrohabitat guilds occupied the lentic areas, while below dams, fluvial fish guilds used shallow, faster water. Fifth, fluvial species responded the most dramatically to these habitat changes. Finally, in a system depauperate of lotic habitat, fluvial habitats created below beaver dams provided an important refuge for native stream fish. These source areas can increase resiliency and maintaining them may be useful for sustainable watershed conservation plans in these types of systems.

Almeida, Rafael. "Mechanisms and Magnitude of Cenozoic Crustal Extension in the Vicinity of Lake Mead, Nevada and the Beaver Dam Mountains, Utah." Thesis, 2014. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8DJ5CTG.

Full text
Abstract:
The central Basin and Range Province of Nevada and Utah was one of the first areas in which the existence of widespread low-angle normal faults or detachments was first recognized. The magnitude of associated crustal extension is estimated by some to be large, in places increasing original line lengths by as much as a factor of four. However, rock mechanics experiments and seismological data cast doubt on whether these structures slipped at low inclination in the manner generally assumed. In this dissertation, I review the evidence for the presence of detachment faults in the Lake Mead and Beaver Dam Mountains areas and place constraints on the amount of extension that has occurred there since the Miocene. Chapter 1 deals with the source-provenance relationship between Miocene breccias cropping out close to Las Vegas, Nevada and their interpreted source at Gold Butte, currently located 65 km to the east. Geochemical, geochronological and thermochronological data provide support for that long-accepted correlation, though with unexpected mismatches requiring modification of the original hypothesis. In Chapter 2, the same data are used to propose a refinement of the timing of ~1.45 Ga anorogenic magmatism, and the distribution of Proterozoic crustal boundaries. Chapter 3 uses geophysical methods to address the subsurface geometry of faults along the west flank of the Beaver Dam Mountains of southwestern Utah. The data suggest that the range is bounded by steeply inclined normal faults rather than a regional-scale detachment fault. Footwall folding formerly ascribed to Miocene deformation is reinterpreted as an expression of Cretaceous crustal shortening. Fission track data presented in Chapter 4 are consistent with mid-Miocene exhumation adjacent to high-angle normal faults. They also reveal a protracted history dating back to the Pennsylvanian-Permian time, with implications for the interpretation of other basement-cored uplifts in the region. A key finding of this dissertation is that the magnitude of crustal extension in this region has been overestimated. The pre-extensional width was increased by a factor of two across Lake Mead, through a combination of high-angle normal faulting and strike-slip deformation. Data from the transect across the Beaver Dam Mountains suggest substantially less extension, with the difference accommodated for the most part by displacement on the intervening Las Vegas Valley Shear Zone. The Colorado Plateau-Basin and Range transition zone may be a long-lived tectonic boundary where this assumption may be especially ill-suited.

Abstract:
The present dissertation focuses on the cause and legal consequences of the end of bearer shares. The objective is to analyze, the way the subject was dealt with within europe, and the awareness of bearer shares’ as risk factors for money laundering and for the financing of terrorism. It will also analyze the legal consequences of their abolition in different legal systems, focusing on the Portuguese one. For this purpose, a historical retrospective of the juridical regime of the transfer of bearer shares is made, in order to clarify the shares outstanding, their holders and transfer consequences. A critical analysis follows on the practical consequences of the abolition of bearer shares, as holdings and guarantee of compliance with obligations. Finally, it is done a critical reflection on the transposition into the Portuguese legal system, in comparison with the ones in the various systems within the European Union.

Abstract:
The semiaquatic mammals - amongst them the beaver Castor fiber - are inhabitants of the land-water-ecotone, which is characterized by length and low depth.Due to specific adaptations to their habitats, semiaquatic mammals are highly dependent on the specific structures and resources of the ecotone riverbank. Anthropogenic influences on the ecotone riverbank often cause destruction of the resources that leads to a decrease of structural diversity.Being a primary consumer, the beaver mainly uses the water as a medium for locomotion and escape. The equipment of the riverbank, mainly the bankside vegetation, is of great importance concerning foraging. The presence and the quantity of certain biofacts like feeding or cutting places and scent mounds give a hint on the value of different structures and resources of the bankside with regard to certain modes of behaviour. They also give information on different qualities of the used and unused parts of the bankside.Biofacts of beaver-activity were recorded along 20 km of riverbank during a five-year-period. The results of the statistical analysis show that beavers - concerning species-specific mode of behaviour - prefer certain riverbank structures. Biofacts and near-natural structures such as steep bank, riparian forest and willows correlate significantly positive whereas biofacts and anthropogenic structures as slope, farmland or absence of woody plants show significantly negative correlation. There is a strong connection between the number of biofacts - that is use of the riverbank or slope - and structural diversity. Based on these results, an eco-ethological model has been developed which makes it possible to predict behaviour in dependence on the specific structures and resources of the banks and slopes of anthropogenic influenced streams.

Full text
Abstract:
Thiols and selenium may influence mercury methylation in aquatic environments. To demonstrate the occurrence of both elements with mercury in selected aquatic systems of Quebec, a sampling campaign was conducted during the summer of 2010 in Mont-Temblant national park (Laurentians, Quebec). There is a significant correlation between selenium and total mercury in surface water. However, concentrations of selenium are very low in lakes and beavers ponds. In addition, the park’s lakes have a relatively high concentrations of methyl mercury with an average of 0,33 ng L-1 and maximum values up to 3,29 ng L-1. Beaver ponds can also be considered hotspots of methylmercury contamination, with an average concentration of 0,95 ng L-1. However, the presence of a colony of beavers in the watershed of a lake does not appear to influence the levels of mercury in that lake. Two species of thiols are present in the surface water of the Laurentian ecosystems: glutathione and thioglycolic acid. The latter is significantly correlated with total mercury and methyl mercury. Thiols may play an important role in the methylation process by promoting the transport of inorganic mercury within the sulfate-reducing bacteria. To better undestand the antagonistic action between selenium and mercury, more research should be conducted in the tissue of organisms living in areas of low concentration of selenium to know if they are protected against mercury toxicity.

Soares, Maria Joaquina Coelho. Doctoral thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/20784.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to characterise the Chalcolithic social organisation in the first half of the third millennium B.C. in Southern Portugal, and to analyse the economical and social transformations that took place in the second half of the same millennium. These were related to the decline of the Chalcolithic mode of production in South-Western Iberia. The complex, more centralised and hierarchical Bronze Age societies emerged from the collapse of that social model. The theoretical constructions draw on the empirical record from the archaeological excavations, directed by the author, in the settlement of Porto das Carretas (Mourão), that surmount the left bank of Guadiana River. The site has been contextualised both at local (Triângulo da Luz territory) and regional scale (South-Western Iberian Peninsula). From the several factors explaining the process of change, the intensification of production was chosen for this study, as associated with technological and economical innovations. As far as the dawn of the Chalcolithic is concerned, it is necessary to follow the positive effects of the Secondary Products Revolution on the rates of growth of all the indicators of social development, such as productivity, sendentism and population density. For the first half of the third millennium B.C., the author proposes a complex tribal organisation model, where the social hierarchy was maintained in the kinship structure. The crisis of the Chalcolithic society gave way, in the second half of the third millennium B.C., to more unequal and hierarchical societies (Bell Beaker period), along with the development of copper metallurgy (copper-arsenic alloys) and craft specialisation.

Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/20934.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study whether the amendment in the measurement of bearer plants is value relevant for the market, taking into account that bearer plants after 1st January 2016 are measured at cost model and before that they were measured at fair value. This dissertation applies the Ohlson model (1995), based on the multiple linear regression model, which focuses on the method of ordinary least squares (OLS- ordinary Least-Squares). The sample is composed by companies listed on the stock exchange from European Union countries (United Kingdom included) that have biological assets and adopt IFRS in the preparation of consolidated financial statements, before and after the changes in the international standards. The empirical results conclude that the amendments in IAS 41, by not allowing the recognition of bearer plants as biological assets, did not increase or decrease the value relevance of biological assets (current and non-current assets). On the other hand, recognition bearer plants under IAS16 using cost model is relevant for investors. These facts prove that the amendments in IAS 41 meet the expectations, considering that the amendment is expected to provide an increase in information usefulness for the investors’ decision-making process.
