Abstract:
This chapter discusses some of the procedures to be followed when transferring some or all of a company member’s shares to another person, and the three important factors on which such procedures depend: whether or not the transfer occurs via sale on the London Stock Exchange; whether the whole or only part of the member’s holding is being transferred; and whether the shares are certificated or uncertificated. After describing share certificates and uncertificated shares, the chapter considers the provisions of Section 544(1) of the Companies Act 2006 regarding share transfer, along with the problem of who should bear the loss when a forged or fraudulent transfer of shares is committed. It also explores transmission of shares on death or bankruptcy and the abolition of bearer share warrants. Finally, it tackles takeovers of public companies and compulsory acquisition of remaining shares.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Edmund Burke’s arguments on the Anglo-Indian trade and the British rule in Bengal. In contrast to the culturalist interpretations of Burke’s position on the British Empire, the chapter brings Burke’s political economic writings to bear on his efforts to maintain the empire in India while expunging its illiberal economic aspects. Behind Burke’s attempt to reform the Indian administration and impeach Warren Hastings, it is argued, was the East India Company’s systematic violation of the liberal economic principles that defined the British character as a commercial society. Burke openly castigated the illiberal extractive policies being used in India and sequestered them from the essentially liberal conception of British commercial society. His condemnation of Company policies in India can therefore be understood as an attempt to shore up the increasingly blurred distinctions between civilized commerce and unabashed pillage, between enlightened self-interest and unbridled rapacity, and between “imperial commerce” and “imperious commerce.”

Lee, Anthony W., ed. Samuel Johnson Among the Modernists. Liverpool University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781942954668.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book brings Johnson more sharply into focus by casting him amongst an unfamiliar milieu and company; likewise, it is hoped that by bringing Johnson to bear on the various authors and topics gathered, it manages to foreground some aspects of Modernism and its practitioners that would otherwise remain elusively hidden. If it is unlikely that the phrase “Modernity Johnson” will eclipse such better-known appellations as “Dictionary Johnson” and “the Rambler,” this volume suggests that it urges a rethinking of both Johnson and Modernism in ways that are at once compelling, illuminating, and critically productive.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the lawsuit that Wally Butts, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, filed against the publisher of the Saturday Evening Post in 1963. The lawsuit began when the former head football coach of the University of Georgia (UGA) sued the publishing company for libel after its magazine published a story accusing him of fixing the 1962 UGA–Alabama football game with the help of legendary University of Alabama football coach Bear Bryant. This case marked the first time the U.S. Supreme Court concluded that a sporting figure was a public figure, that a former football coach was a celebrity, and that to win a defamation suit, public figures needed to prove actual malice (that the publisher had knowledge the statement was false or published it with reckless disregard of its falsity).

Powers, Melinda. Representing ‘Woman’ in Split Britches’ Honey I’m Home, the F-RTC’s Oedipus Rex XX/XY, and Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flynn’s Lysistrata Jones. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777359.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uses case studies from both comedy and tragedy, including Split Britches’ Honey I’m Home: The Alcestis Story (1989), the Faux-Real Theatre Company’s Oedipus Rex XX/XY (2012), and Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flynn’s Lysistrata Jones (2011), to explore the extent to which costuming and casting choices may reinforce or challenge the male-invented, male-performed idea of ‘Woman’ performed on the ancient stage. It argues that the employment of women actors in a play written by and for men does not preclude a feminist critique, for Split Britches’ and Faux-Real’s performances have used feminist performance techniques and cross-gendered casting to challenge the gender binary of male/female. However, in some cases, such as Lysistrata Jones, reperforming Greek drama may inadvertently result in the reinforcement of negative depictions of women and essentialist ideas that attach sex (the physical body) to gender (the cultural performance of that body).

Abstract:
This chapter brings quantitative and qualitative empirics to bear on the relationship between environmental predictability, navigation strategy, and international development organization (IDO) Project Success. The chapter first examines quantitative data on IDO Project Success, as environmental unpredictability varies along with the role that the Navigation by Judgment propensity plays in this relationship. It then turns to qualitative cases, which compare U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) performance in Liberia’s unpredictable environment as both IDOs attempt to achieve similar goals in health and government capacity-building interventions. The discussion draws on the quantitative Project Performance Database and two pairs of case studies comparing USAID and DFID projects in relatively unpredictable Liberia. The chapter finds that Navigation by Judgment is associated with relatively better project performance in unpredictable contexts.

Abstract:
This book is the first comprehensive history of the anti-diphtheria campaign and the factors which facilitated or hindered the rollout of the national childhood immunization programme in Ireland. It is easy to forget the context in which Irish society opted to embrace mass childhood immunization. Dwyer shows us how we got where we are. He restores Diphtheria’s reputation as one of the most prolific child-killers of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ireland and explores the factors which allowed the disease to take a heavy toll on child health and life-expectancy. Public health officials in the fledgling Irish Free State set the eradication of diphtheria among their first national goals, and eschewing the reticence of their British counterparts, adopted anti-diphtheria immunization as their weapon of choice. An unofficial alliance between Irish medical officers and the British pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome placed Ireland on the European frontline of the bacteriological revolution, however, Wellcome sponsored vaccine trials in Ireland side-lined the human rights of Ireland’s most vulnerable citizens: institutional children in state care. An immunization accident in County Waterford, and the death of a young girl, raised serious questions regarding the safety of the immunization process itself, resulting in a landmark High Court case and the Irish Medical Union’s twelve-year long withdrawal of immunization services. As childhood immunization is increasingly considered a lifestyle choice, rather than a lifesaving intervention, this book brings historical context to bear on current debate.

Abstract:
Based on empirical analysis, this ethnographic fieldwork and collection of original articles on contemporary Protestant religions in Mexico and Central America examines regions ranging from the Pacific coast in the north to Guatemala in the south. These new studies reveal that Protestantism was in the rise in the last decades of the twentieth century because it was opposing political structures that were largely unworkable in a new age of economic expansion and population growth. The studies cover regional and local variations in the growth of Protestantism, examine numerous reasons for the variations, and compare rural villages with modern communities. While the Catholic Church remains only a marginal player in the conflicts taking place in local communities, the book concludes that the modern religious conflicts bear only a general resemblance to the anti-Catholic issues that impelled the original Protestant Reformation in Europe. Relying on traditional scientific principles of data recording and theory development, the contributors look into the lives of contemporary rural people, Indian and mestizo, and provide data that enhance the general study of modern religious movements. The chapters examine, among other topics, the relationship between religion and demography, the role of leadership in church growth, the theories of Max Weber relating capitalism and Protestantism, religious conversion, and the modernization of Indian communities. Scholars and students who are interested in cultural anthropology, religious change, and religion in Latin America will find in these pages a unique and enlightening examination of Protestantism's rise and spread in Latin America.
