Beat Browser is a music browsing environment that delivers immediate audio feedback while browsing arbitrarily large music collections. The goal of Beat Browser is to give users a sense of exploring "live" and continuous audio while rapidly moving between sources by mouse. It appears their entire universe of music is playing all the time, whether they're there listening or not. Beat Browser's Universal Time Base architecture keeps a central clock running that manages the playback position of every piece of music launclied, orchestrating this perceptual illusion.

Abstract:
My play script is a docu-drama inspired by the 1950s Drum journalists: Can Themba, Bloke Modisane, Nat Nakasa, Henry Nxumalo, Lewis Nkosi, Peter Magubane, Casey Motsitsi and Todd Matshikiza. The setting is a Sophiatown shebeen through which the characters move in and out. The central dramatic exploration hinges on female characters’ experiences rather than the perspectives of the male journalists connected to them. I dramatise documented events such as Modisane’s wife leaving him and taking their daughter with her, or a woman who buried her lover’s body after he was beaten and stabbed to death. There are other twists and turns based on the Drum journalists writings. I play with the seriousness of politics, love affairs, and the comedy of their daily lives. My influences come from plays such as Nongogo (1959) and Sophiatown (1986). The Beat is dedicated to all the women who have been silenced and as a result became products of their consequences. Their voices remind me as a theatre maker that my poems and plays might arrive in me as pure SONGS (Dipina) or a CRY (Kodiyamalla). Sometimes their inspiration will spring from my traditional family rituals, as a PRAISE song/s (Dithoko/ Thoko), or from a simple memory of a childhood church song, a HYMN (Difela/ Sefela). At times these words will present themselves as a source of where one comes from, CLAN NAMES (Seboko/ Poko). These stories will find me in the dusty streets of my village and township HERSTORY… they will touch, move, provoke, push and force me to vomit on page words that are subjects of that which we are even when silence seems inevitable.
My poetry collection fuses Sesotho and English, often within the same poem, as a way of showing how I live within and between two cultures. I write to celebrate these two tongues without compromising either language and allow each poem, to express its own musical component, tone, rhythm, and pace as it moves between stage and page. My poems converse about difficult subjects from a feminine voice. They look at family structures and dynamics, using everyday household things as metaphors. They take on deep family narratives of generational curses, births, deaths and love. There are also some more political poems about community outrage, the exploitation caused by outmoded culture and tradition, and about the nightmare that constantly wants to come out of the township.

Bowers, Emma Jane. "Investigation of the interactions between breathing, beat by beat changes in RR intervals, and beat by beat changes in systolic pressure levels." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.493067.

Abstract:
Blood pressure is constantly changing due to internal and external influences. The body counteracts these changes via the baroreflex by altering heart rate, stroke volume and peripheral resistance. The integrity of the baroreflex is often measured by baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), the ratio of change in RR-interval to change in systolic pressure (SP). The simple model assumed by BRS is a black box, with an input, SP levels, and an output, RR-intervals, therefore BRS represents the gain of the system. If RR-intervals and SP levels are changing cyclically, for example in response to regular breathing, the phase offset between the input and output can also be measured.

Kuhlman, Laura Jane. "The beat goes on: women writers of the beat generation." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5796.

Full text
Abstract:
The Beats were one of the most influential communities of the 20th century, and this dissertation focuses on the critically underrepresented women who were part of their influence. Today, the Beats are largely celebrated for their literary legacy, popularizing a spontaneous poetic style as well as promoting an antimaterialist ethos and globe-trotting mystique in opposition to Cold War attitudes of confinement and consensus. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Beats were seen as harbingers of cultural disillusionment, taking to the road in search of God, championing the “beatific” nature of the disenfranchised, the poor, and the lowly across America. Today, the Beats are considered to be the progenitors of pacifist “hippie” culture and a revolutionary postwar spirit. Despite this democratizing goal, a prevailing critical consensus holds that the Beat movement was primarily a “boy’s club,” in which the homosocial bonds between the key male figures fostered a system of literary mentorship that largely excluded women writers. Although the canon is frequently narrowed to give precedence to Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs, and the male writers who joined their cadre, my project focuses on the many women writers who were part of the Beat community and the lasting impact of their work. My goal is to reconceptualize Beat aesthetics, themes, and communities in light of these women’s writing. The project entails close textual analysis of these writers’ work across multiple genres, including poetry, memoir, and fiction, as well as research toward historical and cultural contextualization, including interviews. Their writing emphasizes the centrality of the domestic sphere to Beat publishing and the utility of the road in seeking healing and empowerment, in addition to offering new perspectives on Beat spirituality and life writing. In addition to bringing well-deserved attention to these marginalized writers, this research is valuable for American literary history in expanding knowledge of women’s writing at midcentury. More broadly, these writers are of significance to our understanding of modern feminism as well. The majority of these women worked to support their families at a time described by Betty Friedan as the age of the “feminine mystique,” and they pushed back against the rigid social conventions of their time by escaping into bohemian life. The Beat women wrote frankly about reproductive roulette, single motherhood, abortion, social stigma about being women who lived alone, and difficulty starting careers in a sexist culture. For their shared values of self-sufficiency and dedication to their work, these women could be seen as feminist forerunners to the major crest of second wave feminism. However, feminism is not a single, static, monolithic push, and my interrogation of Beat women’s texts complicates and enriches understandings of postwar gender conventions. These writers’ thought contributes to ongoing discussions in modern feminist thought, including shifting cultural attitudes toward domestic labor, the importance of women’s communities, and forms and contradictions of female leadership.

Dastmalchi, Azadeh. "Beat-to-Beat Estimation of Blood Pressure by Artificial Neural Network." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31962.

Full text
Abstract:
High blood pressure is a major public health issue. However, there are many physical and non-physical factors that affect the measurement of blood pressure (BP) over very short time spans. Therefore, it is very difficult to write a mathematical equation which includes all relevant factors needed to estimate accurate BP values. As a result, a possible solution to overcome these limitations is the use of an artificial neural network (ANN). The aim of this research is to design and implement a new ANN approach, which correlates the arterial pulse waveform shape to BP values, for estimation of BP in a single heartbeat. To test the feasibility of this approach, a pilot study was performed on an arterial pulse waveform dataset obtained from 11 patients with normal BP and 11 patients with hypertension. It was found that the proposed method can accurately estimate BP in single heartbeats and satisfy the requirements of the ANSI/AAMI standard for non-invasive measurement of BP.

The arterial baroreflex is a fast-acting control mechanism that the body relies on to regulate blood pressure. Previous efforts to quantitatively model the baroreflex have relied primarily on non-parametric characterization of the transfer function from blood pressure to heart rate (Berger et al.,1989, Akselrod et al., 1981,1985). Of the parametric models proposed, most focus on matching empirical transfer functions with continuous-time models (Berger et al., 1991). Use of these models is often restricted to simulation, and consequently not focused on prediction. We develop a beat-to-beat, one-pole model for the baroreflex that can parsimoniously capture both the empirical frequency-domain and time-domain characteristics of the baroreflex. Further, we develop a robust identification method for on-line estimation of our model parameters from clinical data. We conclude by presenting preliminary results of our model and estimation method applied to patients undergoing drug-induced autonomic blockade.

Thesis, Kungl. Musikhögskolan, Institutionen för musik- och medieproduktion, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kmh:diva-3185.

Full text
Abstract:

"Beat & beyond : memoir, myth and visual arts in women of the beat generation = Más allá del "Beat": memoria, mito y arte visual en las mujeres de la generación beat." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Murcia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/369842.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to reassess the position of women writers within the Beat Generation and re-evaluate their work within (post)Beat – and extra-Beat – literary and artistic discourses. To do so, the dissertation is divided into three main chapters which focus on different themes and, incidentally, on the work of different writers and poets. Chapter two tackles the personal/literary dilemma by analyzing eleven memoirs written by women associated with the Beat Generation. By investigating common themes in the memoirs – namely, writing, gender roles, and connection with the Beat Generation – this chapter situates the women in a specific socio-political and artistic context that was common to the male Beat writers, but also expands the concerns found in the works of the male Beats by dealing with themes such as motherhood, abortion, domesticity or even the responsibility of economically supporting the family. Nevertheless, this chapter goes beyond the personal position or personal experience of these authors by studying the specific use they make of memoir as a genre. Bringing into the fore life-writing studies and feminist reevaluations of the dialogue between genre and gender, this chapter argues for a thoughtful reexamination of the literary and artistic value of the – too-often – discarded memoirs. The third chapter moves on to poetry, specifically to Joanne Kyger’s The Tapestry and the Web (1965), Diane di Prima’s Loba (1998) and Anne Waldman’s The Iovis Trilogy (2011), to examine the way in which these poets revise or appropriate mythological themes, characters and discourses. Kyger, for instance, works directly with Homer’s The Odyssey to endow Penelope with a more contemporaneous mindset and space to express herself, while simultaneously keeping her “trapped” within Homer’s framework. Di Prima’s Loba – written mostly in the mid seventies – resonates more clearly with feminist appropriation of mythological characters as well as with the specific Goddess Movement. The last part of the chapter explores Anne Waldman’s deconstruction of the patriarchal myths through the ongoing metaphor of “all is full of Jove” – which alludes to the omnipresent and almighty patriarch, Zeus. In addition to the focus on mythology as a fictive construction, these three poetry collections reevaluate the position of women within the epic genre. The last chapter focuses on visual arts to counteract the visual representation of women in the Beat Generation generated by the mainstream media, and situates their writing in a multi- and trans-media context that places it at the forefront of 1960s artistic and literary experimentation. The first part of the chapter delineates the actual involvement of poets with film and video as, mainly, mediums from which to expand their poetry and artistic vision. The last part focuses on the connection between ruth weiss’s poetry and the visual art world in two different ways: the influence of visual arts like painting, sculpture and lightshows on her poetry, and the actual expansion of her poetry into other media such as painting, theater and film. The conclusion stresses the necessity of placing these women’s poetry and art in the foreground of academic and scholar discourses of the Beat Generation. The approach adopted avoids a comparison with the work of male writers of the generation, which allows for a much freer space from which to analyze their literature outside of a victimized position, while it also establishes the self-sufficiency and aesthetic and thematic relevance of their work. To do so, the dissertation uses as a methodological framework cultural and gender studies, as well as feminist criticism. The formal analysis, in addition, is informed by thematic and formal readings of the literary and visual representation of gender and sexuality developed by feminist and queer criticism.

Kiviniemi, A. (Antti). "Measurement of cardiac vagal outflow by beat-to-beat R-R interval dynamics." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514281896.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Analysis of beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV) provides information of cardiac vagal outflow to the sinus node. Some methodological problems might, however, be involved in the analysis of cardiac vagal outflow from ambulatory Holter recordings, such as saturation, physical activity, and abrubt prolongations of R-R intervals unrelated to respiration. The purpose of this thesis was to assess the physiological basis of beat-to-beat HRV and to develop and assess new methods for the quantification of cardiac autonomic modulation from ambulatory Holter recordings. The study population consisted of 89 healthy volunteers (age 24 ± 4 years) and 590 patients with a recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI, age 61 ± 10 years). The relationship between R-R interval length and the high-frequency (HF) spectral power of the R-R intervals was assessed in 76 healthy subjects and 82 post-AMI patients. The effects of aerobic exercise training on the dynamics between R-R interval and HF power were evaluated by means of a controlled 8-week training intervention (n = 17). The effects of sympathetic activation and concomitant sympathetic and vagal outflow on beat-to-beat HR dynamics were studied in laboratory conditions (n = 13). A new method for quantifying beat-to-beat HRV from the R-R interval lengths where the relationship between HF power and R-R interval is most linear was developed to avoid the confounding effects of possible saturation, physical activity, and random R-R interval dynamics. The clinical significance of the new method was assessed in a series of 590 post-AMI patients. Saturated HF R-R interval dynamics, expressed as a lack of increase in HF power despite an increased R-R interval, was observed in 35 healthy subjects and 9 post-AMI patients. In the training study, 7 subjects out of a total of 17 had saturated HF power before the intervention. After the training period, 5 new cases of saturated HF power were observed. In laboratory conditions, co-activation of sympathetic and vagal outflow resulted in random R-R interval dynamics. In post-AMI patients, HF power analyzed exclusively from the R-R intervals where the relationship between the R-R interval and HF power was most linear (Vindex) predicted independently the occurrence of SCD among post-AMI patients, while traditionally analyzed HF power did not. In conclusion, the saturation of beat-to-beat HRV in ambulatory conditions is a common phenomenon. The prevalence of saturated HF power increases due to enhanced cardiac vagal outflow induced by aerobic training. Finally, the novel analysis of vagally mediated HRV (Vindex) provides unique information that cannot be obtained by traditional analysis of HF R-R interval dynamics.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Bani, as a representative of Binaural Beat technology, on stress. As a secondary purpose anxiety and depression were examined. The sample consisted of 27 university students at the Örebro University. Binaural Beats are sound frequencies with which the brain is said to synchronize and can

affect states of conciousness. Changes in stress, anxiety and depression were examined through an experimental design with repeated measures and a control group for a period of four weeks of listening to Bani. Significant effects were found over time concerning psychological stress and depression for the intervention group. Some group differences were

also found for anxiety and physiological stress, although they seemed to be more affected by natural fluctuations. The results indicated that Bani has a decreasing effect on psychological stress and depression.

Matushewski, Bradley. "Critical Investigation of the Pulse Contour Method for Obtaining Beat-By-Beat Cardiac Output." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/713.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of two existing pulse contour analysis (PCA) models for estimating cardiac stroke volume from the arterial pressure waveform during kicking ergometer exercise and head-up tilt manoeuvres. Secondly, one of the existing models was modified in an attempt to enhance its performance. In part I, seven healthy young adults repeated two submaximal exercise sessions on a kicking ergometer, each with three different sets of steady-state cardiac output comparisons (pulsed Doppler vs. pulse contour). Across all exercise trials regression results were found to be PCA = 1. 23 x Doppler-1. 38 with an r2 = 0. 51. In part II, eight young and eight older male healthy subjects participated in a head-up tilt experiment. Cardiac output comparisons were again performed during the supine and tilt conditions using pulsed Doppler and pulse contour cardiac output. Regression results revealed that PCA performed best during supine conditions and preferentially on the older subjects. In all instances, impedance-calibrated pulse contour analysis will provide reasonable beat-by-beat cardiac output within very narrow confines and will result in a progressively more significant bias as cardiovascular dynamics change. In addition, it appears that heart rate variability negatively influences beat-by-beat pulse contour cardiac output results, further limiting application of existing models.

Elliott, Adrian. "Defining the haemodynamic response to maximal exercise using novel beat-to-beat measurement methods." Thesis, Kingston University, 2013. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/27792/.

Full text
Abstract:
Strenuous exercise presents a significant challenge to the cardiovascular system, such that it is widely assumed that the heart largely governs short, high-intensity aerobic exercise performance. Despite considerable investigation of this topic, the haemodynamic responses to maximal exercise are still not well understood, mostly due to insufficient measurement methods unable to quantify the beat-to-beat response of the cardiovascular system during dynamic exercise. In this thesis, two novel approaches (bioreactance and pulse contour analysis calibrated by lithium dilution) for the continuous assessment of exercise haemodynamics in a healthy, trained population were evaluated. In study I, bioreactance was found to considerably underestimate cardiac output (Q) in comparison with contemporaneous measurements with inert gas rebreathing. In studies II and III, we evaluated pulse contour analysis, calibrated by lithium indicator dilution. Our findings indicated that the timing of calibration was central to the accuracy of measurements made during exercise using this method, perhaps due to alterations in vascular compliance throughout exercise'. In study IV, optimising the calibration of this method during exercise permitted the evaluation of the haemodynamic response to maximal and supramaximal (10% greater than maximal) exercise on a beat-to-beat basis, with the finding that cardiac power output, a measure of cardiac work, was higher during supramaximal exercise despite a similar Q and oxygen consumption (V02) between the two workloads. This finding is important for the understanding of factors limiting exercise performance for it indicates that there is cardiac functional reserve at exhaustion during testing for V02max, thus indicating that the heart is unlikely to be responsible for the termination of exercise as it can be considered to be working submaximally.

Abstract:
Movement: Journey of the Beat addresses the trajectory and transition of popular culture through the modality of rhythm. It configures fresh narratives and new histories necessary to understand why auditory cultures have become increasingly significant in the digital age. Atomised and mobile technologies, which utilise sonic media through streaming, on-line radio and podcasts, have become ubiquitous in a post-work environment. These sonic media provide not merely the mechanisms of connection but also the contexts for understanding changing formations of both identity and community. This research addresses, through rhythm, how popular music culture, central to changing perceptions of ‘self’ and ‘others’ through patterns of production and consumption, must also be viewed as instrumental in shaping new platforms of communication that have resonance not only through the emergence of new social networks and cultural economies but also in the development of media literacies and pedagogic strategies. The shift to online technologies for cultural production and global consumption, although immersed in leisure practices, more significantly alludes to changing dynamics of power and knowledge. An online ecology represents a significant shift in the role of place and time in creative production and its subsequent access. Popular music invariably provides an entry point and subsequent platform for such shifts and this thesis looks to the rhythms within this popular culture in as much as they encode these transformations. This doctoral research builds on the candidate’s established career as music producer, broadcaster, journalist and teacher to construct an appropriate theoretical framework to indicate how the construction, transmission and consumption of popular music rhythms give an understanding of changing social contexts. The thesis maps the movement of commonly recognised popular rhythms from their places of construction to the spaces of reception within broader political, socio-economic and cultural frameworks. The thesis probes the contribution of place and time in transforming global cultures, via social geography and memory, positioning such changes within readings of mobility, stasis, modernity and technology. By consciously addressing multiple disciplines, from populist to academic, Movement provides evidence of how wider structural changes have become reified within the beat and how in turn rhythm provides an appropriate modality through which change can be negotiated and understood.

Abstract:
Cardiovascular mortality continues to be the leading cause of death in the United Kingdom, China and the United States. Many of these deaths occur suddenly, called sudden cardiac death (SCD), with the number of these events estimated from these three Countries to be over 1,500,000 annually. In the vast majority of documented cases, the SCD is directly caused by ventricular tachycardia (V1). Prediction of the presence of the VT is of great importance. It has been found by using signal averaging (SA) techniques that the appearance of micro signals, called ventricular late potentials (VLPs), is highly correlated with the appearance of VT or SCD. The VLPs are about 0.1% - 1% of the size of the normal ECG in most patients and are masked by various noise sources, so that they can not be seen from the standard electrocardiogram (ECG). The SA techniques, depending largly on averaging many beats, can only detect the microvolt signals that are strictly constant in duration, morphology and timing relative to the QRS complex amongst the considerable amounts of noise which are present The main disadvantage of the technique is that it cannot offer information from an individual beat, i.e. variations among the beats and individual beat information are lost when averaging. This information can be very important in the diagnosis of the development of many heart abnormalities, particularly arrhythmias. This thesis describes various techniques that have been developed for a real-time processing system, in which the system can detect VLPs at the body surface with beat-to-beat variations. One of the most important techniques is the use of adaptive filters to reduce the most disruptive noise -random noise. Clinical investigations have been carried out based on 14 normal and 20 abnormal pathological subjects to produce reproducible results on the developed system. The results show that the system can produce much more information than SA techniques for the prediction of VT.

Abstract:
Introduction: Beat-to-beat variability in cycle length exists in spontaneously beating cardiac preparations of varying complexities from the level of the isolated whole heart to the single sinoatrial nodal cell (SANC). The nature of this variability is poorly characterised as are its fundamental physiological origins. Methods: Recordings of spontaneous electrical activity were made from hearts in vivo, during Langendorff-perfusion, and from single SANC. Heart rate variability (HRV) was calculated in the time- and frequency-domains at baseline and in response to pharmacological mediators that interfered with critical processes involved in automaticity (catecholamines, carbachol, ivabradine, zatebradine, ryanodine and thapsigargin). In addition, a novel 2D technique for imaging Ca2+ fluorescence in spontaneously beating, fluo4-AM loaded, patched single sinoatrial nodal cells was developed to investigate the biophysical behaviour of Ca2+ during pacemaking to see if variability in this was responsible for SANC HRV. Results: Under baseline, temperature-stable conditions, levels of HRV were greatest in vivo (human > rat). SANC exhibited slightly lower levels of HRV, whereas HRV levels expressed by Langendorff-perfused hearts were the least (rabbit > rat), although still comprised a significant proportion of the variability witnessed in vivo. Anaesthetising in vivo rabbits decreased HRV to levels similar to those seen in the Langendorff-perfused heart. HRV was decreased by catecholamines and by ryanodine/thapsigargin in the Langendorff heart. Conversely, HRV was increased by carbachol, ivabradine, zatebradine and ryanodine in SANC. Heart rate changes had a marked effect on levels of HRV. 2D Ca2+ imaging of SANC showed that diastolic local Ca2+ releases (LCRs) occurred earlier than previously thought, with early LCRs having characteristics that were distinct from later LCRs. Mean time of occurrence of all the LCRs within a given diastole closely predicted the duration of the cycle. The rate of restitution of the whole cell Ca2+ transient (used as a surrogate for the pumping function of SERCA) in turn closely predicted the mean time of occurrence of LCRs. Tight synchronisation of the electrical activity of the cell with the biophysical behaviour of Ca2+ appeared to predict shorter cycle lengths. Isoprenaline increased LCR amplitude, though did not increase LCR number, size or duration. Isoprenaline caused LCRs to occur earlier, and synchronised their occurrence and the rate of pumping of Ca2+ back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Finally, LCRs were found to preferentially recur in certain regions of the cell, dubbed hotspots. Isoprenaline favoured hotspot production. Conclusion: Whilst greatest in vivo, significant HRV exists in spontaneously beating cardiac preparations devoid of a functioning autonomic nervous system. Studies in SANC indicate that the origin of this is likely to be variability in release of LCRs from the SR via ryanodine receptors. This in turn is controlled by SR refilling kinetics via SR Ca2+ pumping. The coupled system of membrane- and Ca2+-pacemaker clocks are so heavily intertwined that myriad factors will come to bear on generating such variability, including the amount of Ca2+ available for pumping and the phosphorylation state of key proteins, to the extent that variability in no one process can take the credit for generating such HRV.

This research looks for to extend the knowledge on the history of the women, being taken as base and example the history of the women beats. Before going into in the history of the women who had been part of this generation, we made an analysis on the contracultural movement Beat generation, the historical context of the period and, after these considerations, we ponder of that forms the women were inserted inside of the circle. As research source, we use the autobiográfico book of the writer beat Carolyn Cassady -, My Years With Cassady, Kerouac and Ginsberg -, to be able to understand as it inserted itself in the movement and as the men beats, exactly that involuntarily, they strengthened the sort papers. At the same time, we search to analyze the United States society of the second half of century XX, to be able to understand which they had been the places denied to the women and of that forms the relations of being able and the imaginary one on the place of each one had been being constituted. We lead in consideration, also, the difficulties in if studying the women in history. For the analyses that in we consider them to make, it is important to evaluate as the society dealt with these women, which was the relations of being able that already they permeavam the society and of which forms these relations (reverse speed) were constructed and strengthened daily. As cloth of deep, we take in consideration the history of the women and the deletion of these personages in our history, memory and in our books, that is, of that it forms these absences in /de the historical sources daily are reflected in the didactic materials and taught History/learned.

Kushch, Olga. "Beat gestures and prosodic prominence: impact on learning." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/463004.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has shown that gestures are beneficial for language learning. This doctoral thesis centers on the effects of beat gestures– i.e., hand and arm gestures that are typically associated with prosodically prominent positions in speech - on such processes. Little is known about how the two central properties of beat gestures, namely how they mark both information focus and rhythmic positions in speech, can be beneficial for learning either a first or a second language. The main goal of this PhD thesis is to investigate how prosodic and gestural prominence expressed together in beat gestures benefit (a) information memorization in one’s native language (Study 1); (b) vocabulary learning in a second language (Study 2); and (c) pronunciation improvement in a second language (Study 3). This dissertation includes three independent studies which all explore the above mentioned theme. The first study aims at investigating the role of prosodic prominence (pitch accents) and gesture prominence (beat gestures) on the recall of contrastive information in a piece of discourse. Results reveal that the presence of gestural prominence adds a further beneficial effect on information recall in comparison with the conditions where beat gestures are absent. The second study investigates the same phenomena and their effect this time (the stimuli contain the combination of the presence or absence of prosodic prominence in speech and the presence or absence of gestural prominence) on L2 novel words memorization. The results show that the strongest effect corresponds to target words presented with gestural prominence together with prosodic prominence. The third study aims to investigate also the same phenomenon, that is, whether the production of beat gestures on the part of the participants, as highlighters of rhythmic information, has additional beneficial effects on second language pronunciation improvement in comparison to only observing beat gestures. The results indicate that producing beat gestures leads to higher gains in accent improvement in comparison to only observing beat gestures. Overall, the three studies show evidence that beat gestures produced naturally (that is, accompanied by prosodic prominence) favor information memorization in one´s native language (Study 1) and novel words learning in a second language (Study 2). In addition to those findings, they also reveal that producing beat gestures is shown to have a beneficial effect for pronunciation improvement (Study 3). The findings of the studies presented in this thesis support the theories of embodied cognition with new evidence that adding visuospatial information expressed by beat gestures to prosodic prominence boosts learning. These results have implications for second language instruction practices and theories of embodied cognition.

Abstract:
The task of finding the beat in music is simple for most people, but surprisingly difficult to replicate in a robot. Progress in this problem has been made using various preprocessing techniques (Hitz 2008; Tomic and Janata 2008). However, a real-time method is not yet available. Methods using a class of oscillators called relay relaxation oscillators are promising. In particular, systems of forced Hopf oscillators (Large 2000; Righetti et al. 2006) have been used with relative success. This work describes current methods of beat tracking and develops a new method that incorporates the best ideas from each existing method and removes the necessity for preprocessing.

Physicians require automated techniques to accurately analyze the vast amount of physiological data collected by continuous monitoring devices. In this thesis, we consider one analysis task in particular, the classification of heartbeats from electrocardiographic recordings (ECG). This problem is made challenging by the inter-patient differences present in ECG morphology and timing characteristics. Supervised classifiers trained on a collection of patients can have unpredictable results when applied to a new patient. To reduce the effect of inter-patient differences, researchers have suggested training patient-adative classifiers by training on labeled data from the test patient. However, patient-adaptive classifiers have not been integrated in practice because they require an impractical amount of patient-specific expert knowledge. We present two approaches based on machine learning for building accurate patientadaptive beat classifiers that use little or no patient-specific expert knowledge. First, we present a method to transfer and adapt knowledge from a collection of patients to a test-patient. This first approach, based on transductive transfer learning, requires no patient-specific labeled data, only labeled data from other patients. Second, we consider the scenario where patient-specific expert knowledge is available, but comes at a high cost. We present a novel algorithm for SVM active learning. By intelligently selecting the training set we show how one can build highly accurate patient-adaptive classifiers using only a small number of cardiologist supplied labels. Our results show the gains in performance possible when using patient-adaptive classifiers in place of global classifiers. Furthermore, the effectiveness of our techniques, which use little or no patient-specific expert knowledge, suggest that it is also practical to use patient-adaptive techniques in a clinical setting.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a noise model refinement for spectroscopic measurements using dual optical frequency combs. Until now most studies centered their efforts on noise characterization using chirp free combs based on an unproved hypothesis: measurements would get worse with chirped combs since multiplicative noises would be present over a longer duration on the interference pattern thus leading to a greater impact. However, at least one experimental result hinted to the contrary: differential chirp would actually improve the signal to noise ratio. This thesis therefore aims at increasing the understanding of noise when a differential chirp is present in a dual comb measurement. The specific goal is to provide new insights about the usefulness of chirp in this kind of measurement. With this in mind, we conducted a literature review of noise models in optical frequency combs. We subsequently analyzed the chirp’s effect in the presence of both additive and multiplicative noise. The thesis also proposes a phenomenological model to describe the amplified spontaneous emission - ASE in short pulse lasers mode locked using non linear polarization rotation. Finally the comb spectra and their beat notes are characterized putting special attention to their relation with the ASE components. As conclusions, we can report that noise power spectral density levels do not change with a differential chirp. Chirping allows sending a greater optical power through the sample, such that the measurement signal to noise ratio can be improved. On the other hand, the ASE characterization established its non-stationary nature and explained very well characteristic features routinely observed in dual comb beat notes that were not fully understood. Finally, assuming the ASE experiences a sub threshold linear cavity allows using theses features to estimate the non linear phase shift experienced by the modelocked pulse train in the laser cavity.

Abstract:
American literature is a constant flux. It is looking for new paths, exits and stories evoking or transgressing reality. Since the arrival of the first settlers, the influence of European authors on the future natives of this always-expanding country has never waned. As he progressively devoted himself to the discovery and exploration of the interiority of Man, the author has described the multiple evolutions which transformed both the land and the minds. Freeing oneself from commonplace ideas in order to get closer to the ultimate myth – that is, the “Great American Novel” – is a way for the writers of the New World to go down in history by taking full ownership of the language itself. Thanks to Jack London and the Beat Generation, writing has become a byword for testimony, as the language has continuously been reinvented. Freeing writing from its shackles is much more than a simple project, it is a way to liberate the novel. From illegal trips in freight cars to the glorification of a new Word, the road has kept all its promises

Abstract:
This paper constitutes a comparative study between the pinnacle works of the American beat generation of the twentieth century (âHowlâ, by Allen Ginsberg, and On the road, by Jack Kerouac) e their filmic adaptations produced in the first decade of the twentieth first century. Our goal is to bring forth a dialogue established by these four objective elements, based on the analysis of the congress of their individual poetics, and, in light of this, to contribute to a process that appears to be contemporarily inescapable, the relations between cinema and literature. To this end, the following dissertation will consist of the study of regularities of behavior in the adaptation process presented in the corpus before us as a means of deducing and describing possible systemic norms that underlie and regulate the transpositions between the beat literary system and the contemporary cinematographic system. On the other hand, but not separately, as we understand adaptation as rounded semiotic systems, we must consider the contexts in which they are inserted and what relations they actualize within their arrival system, not only that but investigate possible analogies to the departure system, We hope to demonstrate that these different strands of the problem are intertwined and connected if we create a common filed of tension in which the art-works are able to sustain dialogue â this we endeavored to do with the stablishment of an organizing principle, the common theme of madness. Our goal is, ultimately, to try to equate the importance of the product of adaptation and its counterpart in our analysis, transforming the field of Translation Studies into something closer to Compared Studies â of Literature or Cinema, as if our objects of research were ontologically comparable entities. We base our endeavor to achieve this task in the works of Walter Benjamin (2012), Mikhail Bakhtin (2010), Itamar Even-Zohar (1990), Jacques Derrida (1995), Maurice Blanchot (1987), Michel Foucault (1989), Gideon Toury (1995), Patrick Catrysse (1992), amongst others.
