Abstract:
The rapid increase in the use of lasers in healthcare has introduced new challenges. The hazards depend on the characteristics of the laser and the different modes of interaction with tissue. If the laser beam were to strike the unprotected eye, serious damage could occur, the site of damage depending on the wavelength of the laser radiation. The risk is reduced in the case of extended sources but, potentially, may be increased when a repetitively pulsed laser is used. These concepts are all discussed in addition to summarizing current legislation and standards. The laser protection adviser (LPA) is someone who is knowledgeable in the evaluation of risk associated with the use of lasers and has responsibility for provision of expert advice to the user. This chapter contains much useful information for the LPA and others interested in understanding the principles of laser safety.

Abstract:
Autonomic hyperarousal and avoidance in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be triggered by a host of stimuli or situations that bear some similarity or association to the trauma event. As these triggers are often encountered in safe environments removed from the original trauma, this overgeneralization of fear and anxiety is a burden that can interfere with daily life. Recent efforts to understand the neurobiology of PTSD have relied on laboratory models of Pavlovian fear conditioning and extinction. This chapter reviews studies of fear generalization in animals and humans, which provide a valuable model to conceptualize the excessive fear generalization characteristic of PTSD.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights some of the descriptive and experimental findings about young children’s phonological (non-organic) disorders that have emerged from and contribute to contemporary rule- and constraint-based theories of phonology. Special attention is given to the nature of children’s underlying representations and the processes that relate those representations to corresponding phonetic outputs. Grammatical accounts of several characteristic error patterns are examined from different theoretical perspectives. The focus is on error patterns involving restrictions on phonetic inventories, distributional restrictions, paradigm effects (i.e., morpho-phonological alternations), conspiracies, and consonant clusters. Experimental results from clinical treatment studies are also brought to bear on the evaluation of several phonological claims.

Abstract:
Material culture in Victorian working-class homes acted as a medium through which messages about the importance of industry, diligence, and obedience could be emphasized to children. This chapter will review the ways in which material culture scholars have approached the subject of child labour in different areas of the Victorian world, as well as elucidating the differences and similarities in children’s experiences of work in different parts of the western world during the nineteenth century. It will consider decorative motifs on mass-produced domestic material culture, the role of toys as objects for training children, and work-related artefacts with which children may have interacted, but which do not bear obvious characteristics suggesting that they were specifically made for children. Labour will be addressed in its broadest sense, including gendered differences in the material culture of labour and the broader historical driving forces behind the existence of work-related material ‘propaganda’.

Begbie, Jeremy, Daniel K. L. Chua, and Markus Rathey, eds. Theology, Music, and Modernity. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198846550.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book addresses the question: how can the study of music contribute to the theological reading of modernity? It seeks to demonstrate that the making and hearing of music, and the discourses surrounding music, can bear their own particular kind of witness to the theological dynamics that have characterized and shaped modernity, and especially with respect to modernity’s ambivalent relation to the God of the Christian faith. Music can provide a distinctive ‘theological performance’ of some of modernity’s most characteristic impulses and orientations. The guiding theme of the book is freedom: one of the most critical issues of the modern era. And the overall theological perspective is provided by the theme of New Creation, a central and pervasive current in Christian Scripture. Concentrating on the period 1740–1850, the book is arranged into four parts (each section taking a particular musical work or corpus of music as its major reference point): (1) ‘Revolutionary Freedom’, (2) ‘From Church to Concert Hall’, (3) ‘Singing Justice’, (4) ‘Music and Language’.

Full text
Abstract:
Two major systems are available for measuring blood pressure (BP)—the indirect cuff method and direct arterial cannulation. In critically-ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit, the invasive blood pressure is the ‘gold standard’ as a tight control of BP values, and its change over time is important for choosing therapies and drugs titration. Since artefacts due to the inappropriate dynamic responses of the fluid-filled monitoring systems may lead to clinically relevant differences between actual and displayed pressure values, before considering the BP value shown as reliable, the critical care giver should carefully evaluate the presence/absence of artefacts (over- or under-damping/resonance). After the arterial pressure waveform quality has been verified, the observation of each component of the arterial wave (systolic upstroke, peak, systolic decline, small pulse of reflected pressure waves, dicrotic notch) may provide a number of useful haemodynamic information. In fact, changes in the arterial pulse contour are due the interaction between the heart beat and the whole vascular properties. Vasoconstriction, vasodilatation, shock states (cardiogenic, hypovolaemic, distributive, obstructive), valve diseases (aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation), ventricular dysfunction, cardiac tamponade are associated with particular arterial waveform characteristics that may suggest to the physician underlying condition that could be necessary to investigate properly. Finally, the effects of positive-pressure mechanical ventilation on heart–lung interaction, may suggest the existence of an absolute or relative hypovolaemia by means of the so-called dynamic indices of fluid responsiveness.
