Abstract:
The production of the Bc and [Formula: see text] mesons was studied in the framework of the factorization formalism and perturbative QCD. Predicted results implied that an observable number of Bc and [Formula: see text] events can be produced at LEP I and at Tevatron. The fragmentation approximation describes the production of the Bc and [Formula: see text] mesons very well in high energy e+ e- collisions. In hadronic collisions, it is valid when and only when the transverse momentum PT of the produced Bc and [Formula: see text] is much larger than the mass of the Bc meson.

Abstract:
The Bc+ meson is observed in lead-lead and proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of √SNN = 5.02 TeV, via the Bc+ → (J/ψ → μ+μ−)μ+vμ decay and using 2017 and 2018 data from the CMS detector. The resulting Bc+ nuclear modification factor is measured in two bins of the trimuon transverse momentum and of the collision centrality. Less suppression is observed than for other quarkonia and most open heavy flavour mesons. This first observation of the Bc+ meson in heavy ion collisions will shed light on the interplay of suppression and enhancement mechanisms in the production of heavy-flavor mesons in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The performance of the irradiate CMS forward pixel detector are discussed in the first part of the thesis. The analysed data are collected in a testbeam of a detector module irradiated up to 45 Mrad. The high absorbed dose has not compromised the detector response. In the second part, the feasibility of the analysis of the B_c decaying into J/psi + pion at CMS is expounded. The results are obtained for 1fb-1 and 200pb-1 of integrated luminosity.

Abstract:
The precision measurement of the \Bc meson lifetime provides an essential test of the models describing the unique open-flavour state composed of two heavy quarks. It is also a necessary input for all measurements of \Bc production and decay branching fractions. The first measurement of the \Bc lifetime achieved by the LHCb Collaboration is presented in this Thesis. The data sample collected in 2012, in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb$^{-1}$, is analysed to select \BctojmX decays. A two-dimensional data-model is developed combining the information on the invariant mass of the \jpsimup combination and the decay time, as measured in the rest-frame of the \jpsimup combination. Data-driven techniques are proposed to model the background sources, including the candidates selected because of the misidentification of a hadron as the muon produced in a \Bc decay, for which an original technique has been developed. The template distribution for \BctojmX decays relies on realistic dynamical models including feed-down decays, and depends on the \Bc lifetime through a statistical correction between the \Bc and \jpsimup rest frames, known as $k$-factor. Data-driven cross-checks are used to test the dynamical model and assess the related uncertainties. The measured lifetime is $%\begin{equation} \tau_{\Bc} = 509 \pm 8 \stat \pm 12 \syst \ \mathrm{fs}, $ %\end{equation} where the largest systematic uncertainty is due to the statistical model used to describe the combinatorial background, which is the only one relying on simulation.
