Abstract:
The aim of the study was to determine the chemical profile, antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activities of Heterotrigona itama bee bread from Malaysia. The pH, presence of phytochemicals, antioxidant properties, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), as well as antimicrobial activities, were assessed. Results revealed a decrease in the pH of bee bread water extract (BBW) relative to bee bread ethanolic extract (BBE) and bee bread hot water extract (BBH). Further, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, resins, glycosides and xanthoproteins were detected in BBW, BBH and BBE. Also, significant decreases in TPC, TFC, DPPH activity and FRAP were detected in BBW relative to BBH and BBE. We detected phenolic acids such as gallic acid, caffeic acid, trans-ferulic acid, trans 3-hydroxycinnamic acid and 2-hydroxycinnamic acid, and flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin and mangiferin in BBE using high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The strongest antimicrobial activity was observed in Klebsilla pneumonia (MIC50 1.914 µg/mL), followed by E. coli (MIC50 1.923 µg/mL), Shigella (MIC50 1.813 µg/mL) and Salmonella typhi (MIC50 1.617 µg/mL). Bee bread samples possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Bee bread contains phenolic acids and flavonoids, and could be beneficial in the management and treatment of metabolic diseases.

Abstract:
Better Beginnings Waterloo (BBW) is an ecological, community-driven, prevention program for children aged 4–8 and their families. BBW was implemented in two low-income communities with high percentages of visible minorities. Data on Grade 1–2 children and their parents (the baseline comparison group) were gathered through parent interviews (n = 34) and teacher reports (n = 68) in 2015, prior to BBW programs, and in the period 2018–2019, the same data were collected through parent interviews (n = 47) and teacher reports (n = 46) for children and parents participating in programs (the BBW group). As well, qualitative, open-ended individual interviews with parents (n = 47) and two focus groups were conducted in the period 2018–2019. Children in the BBW cohort were rated by their teachers as having a significantly lower level of emotional and behavioural problems than those in the baseline sample; parents in the BBW cohort had significantly higher levels of social support than parents in the baseline cohort; BBW parents rated their communities significantly more positively than parents at baseline. The qualitative data confirmed these findings. The quantitative and qualitative short-term findings from the BBW research showed similar positive impacts to previous research on program effectiveness, thus demonstrating that the Better Beginnings model can be successfully transferred to new communities.

Abstract:
Weight at birth (bBW) and early weight gain have been linked to the risk of neonatal mortality. Pups are described to be of low bBW if weighing less than one standard deviation (SD) below the mean. Most studies classified breeds according to their expected adult bodyweight. Our aim was to evaluate the breed specificity of these parameters. We assessed the bBW of 213 puppies of Bernese Mountain Dog (BMD), Tibetan Terrier (TT), and Lhasa Apso (LA) breeds, as well as the neonatal growth rate of 133 puppies of BMD and TT. BMD puppies were born relatively smaller than puppies of TT and LA (p ≤ 0.0001) and gained less weight than TT puppies during the first 14 days (p ≤ 0.05). Litter size had a significant impact on bBW and daily gain until the onset of the third week for BMD (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0005, respectively) and TT (p = 0.0003 and p = 0.0064, respectively). When using bBW means and SD specifically assessed according to breed, 29 out of the 213 neonates of our study were judged as being of low bBW, whereas, when using the classical criteria (based on breed groups), the number of low bBW pups was 160 of 213. These results suggest that evaluations of bBW and neonatal growth should be performed in a breed-specific manner.

Abstract:
This paper reviews and summarizes the development, key technologies, and application of brake-by-wire (BBW) actuators. BBW is the technology orientation of future vehicle brake system. The main feature of BBW is to replace some of the mechanical and hydraulic components of traditional brake system with electronic control components, and use cables and wires to transmit energy and signals. BBW actuators have outstanding advantages, such as fast response, accurate control, and compact structure. They are easy to integrate with active safety functions and they are easily matched with the regenerative braking systems of electric vehicle. First, this paper summarizes the classification, characteristics, performance, and architecture of BBW actuators. Subsequently, the braking process regulation of vehicle is considered to be the main target, which is summarized from two aspects of actuator regulation and braking force distribution. The state estimation algorithm and control algorithm applied to these actuators are summarized and analyzed, and the development trend, challenges, and schemes of the braking force distribution are proposed. The development and research trend of braking force match strategies between the regenerative brake system and BBW system are also analyzed and summarized. The further electrification and intelligence of vehicle demand BBW’s braking force control method and distribution method must have higher control accuracy, stronger robustness, and wider adaptability, and the effects on braking comfort and handling stability must be further discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Bio-apatite based materials were prepared from bovine bone wastes (BBW) by thermal treatments using a direct flame (BBS) and annealing at 500–1,100 °C (BB500–BB1100). These low-crystalline materials were characterized by means of SEM, XRD, FTIR, TG, and pHPZC and were used for the adsorption of Hg(II) ions. A CCD-RSM design was used to optimize and analyze independent variables consisting of initial mercury concentration (10–100 mg L−1), pH (2–9), adsorbent mass (0.1–0.5 g), temperature (20–60 °C), and contact time (15–120 min). The results indicated that the order of the mercury uptakes for bio-apatite based adsorbents was BB500 > BB600 > BB800 > BB1100 > BBS > BBW. The dissolution–precipitation and ion-exchange reaction are the two dominant mechanisms for the removal of Hg(II) ions at low and high pH values, respectively. The CCD-RSM predicted maximum mercury adsorption of 99.99% under the optimal conditions of 51.31 mg L−1, 0.44 g, 6.5, 67.5 min, and 50 °C for initial mercury concentration, adsorbent mass, pH, contact time, and temperature, respectively. The findings of the present study revealed that the bio-apatite based materials, particularly BB500, are suitable and versatile adsorbents for the treatment of mercury-containing wastewater.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Baade–Becker–Wesselink (BBW) method remains one of most often used tools to derive a full set of Cepheid astrophysical parameters. The surface brightness version of the BBW technique was preferentially used during the past few decades to calculate Cepheid radii and to improve period–luminosity–colour relations. Its implementation requires a priori knowledge of Cepheid reddening values. We propose a new version of the BBW technique, which allows one to independently determine the colour excess and the intrinsic colour of a radially pulsating star, in addition to its radius, luminosity and distance. The new technique is a generalization of the Balona light curve-modelling approach. The method also allows calibration of the function F(CI0) = BC(CI0) + 10 log [Teff (CI0)] for the class of pulsating stars considered. We apply this technique to a number of classical Cepheids with very accurate light and radial-velocity curves. The new technique can also be applied to other pulsating variables, e.g., RR Lyrae stars. We also discuss the possible dependence of the projection factor on the pulsation phase.

Abstract:
Artificial challenge trial and field trial were carried out in two populations of Black Bengal goat in Bangladesh to evaluate the resistance to Haemonchus Contortus-a major gastrointestinal nematode in goat. Artificial challenge trial revealed that there was no difference in susceptibility of H. contortus in Black Bengal goat of hilly region (BBH) and Black Bengal goat of western region (BBW). In absence of parasitic infection, growth rate of kids of both populations were almost equal. Field trial was conducted with kids of BBW population to find out the within breed variation. Numerically, there was variation among the individuals for parasitic load however the results were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). At individual level, the parasite load ranged from 100 to 400 eggs per gram (epg). The location of villages, age and sex of kids did not influence on the parasitic load of kids. There was no interaction for location, age and sex for body weight at day 8. The Packed Cell Volume and Hemoglobin values differed significantly (p < 0.01) due to age of kids at day 8 and 28 after deworming. The results indicate that Black Bengal goat can be considered as resilience to H. contortus. Progressive Agriculture 30 (1): 55-64, 2019

Abstract:
In a near future, it is imminent that passenger vehicles will soon be introduced with a new revolutionary brake by wire system which replaces all the mechanical linkages and the conventional hydraulic brake systems with complete 'dry' electrical components. One of the many potential benefits of a brake by wire system is the increased brake dynamic performances due to a more accurate and continuous operation of the EMB actuators which leads to the increased amount of possibilities for control in antilock brake system. The main focus of this thesis is on the application of a model predictive control (MPC) method to devise an antilock brake control system for a brake by wire vehicle. Unlike the traditional ABS control algorithms which are based on a trial and error method, the MPC based ABS algorithm aims to utilizes the behaviour of the model to optimize the wheel slip dynamics subject to system constraints. The final implementation of the wheel slip controller emb races decentralized control architecture to independently control the brake torque at each four wheel. Performance of the wheel slip controller is validated through Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation. In order to support the high demands of the computational power and the real time constraints of the Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation, a novel multi processor real-time simulation system is developed using the reflective memory network and the off-the-shelf hardware components.

Abstract:
Architecture and mobility merge together to provide space for activities away from both home and office. The densification of people’s living space and the delocalisation of the workplace are two of the biggest emerging trends in the near future. Society is constantly changing with new needs and desires. The Internet of Things, new technologies and possibilities of autonomous driving enable new approaches to redesign the traditional car. The aim of this project is to rethink mobility and especially the car as we know it today. Since it has been shown that cars are no longer used exclusively as a means of transport, but also as mobile space, the image of the car as people know it could be redrawn Since BMW i is an innovative brand, which can break new ground, it can be ahead of its time and lead society instead of following it. After the first research and examination of relevant topics, the results were further developed and worked out. The system in which the concept takes place is defined in more detail based on further investigations such as scenario, marketplace and target group. The focus is mainly on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. In addition, an insight into the inspiration and the process of aesthetic design is described and illustrated in several sketches and renderings. Then the further development in 3D and VR (Virtual Reality) is shown up to the final digital model. iSpace is a system that brings attention to the potential new role of the car in the coming years. iSpace is rather a mobile architecture than a conventional car, which means that it is used in a completely new and fresh way. The vehicle is designed to be used mainly in the static mode and offers the possibilities of a mobile space to support the flexible and delocalised lifestyle of people. In that sense it shows a completely new view how a vehicle could look like, while creating new kind of benefits to enrich and improve the quality of life. iSpace is part of a bigger system containing several vehicles to cover different types of needs and HUBs, which are the extension of the vehicles to various locations in urban areas.

Le, Moigne Alan. "A discrete Navier-Stokes adjoint method for aerodynamic optimisation of BlendedWing-Body configurations." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/826.

Full text
Abstract:
An aerodynamic shape optimisation capability based on a discrete adjoint solver for Navier- Stokes flows is developed and applied to a Blended Wing-Body future transport aircraft. The optimisation is gradient-based and employs either directly a Sequential Quadratic Programming optimiser or a variable-fidelity optimisation method that combines low- and high-fidelity models. The shape deformations are parameterised using a B´ezier-Bernstein formulation and the structured grid is automatically deformed to represent the design changes. The flow solver at the heart of this optimisation chain is a Reynolds averaged Navier- Stokes code for multiblock structured grids. It uses Osher’s approximate Riemann solver for accurate shock and boundary layer capturing, an implicit temporal discretisation and the algebraic turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax. The discrete Navier-Stokes adjoint solver based on this CFD code shares the same implicit formulation but has to calculate accurately the flow Jacobian. This implies a linearisation of the Baldwin-Lomax model. The accuracy of the resulting adjoint solver is verified through comparison with finitedifference. The aerodynamic shape optimisation chain is applied to an aerofoil drag minimisation problem. This serves as a test case to try and reduce computing time by simplifying the fidelity of the model. The simplifications investigated include changing the convergence level of the adjoint solver, reducing the grid size and modifying the physical model of the adjoint solver independently or in the entire optimisation process. A feasible optimiser and the use of a penalty function are also tested. The variable-fidelity method proves to be the most ef- ficient formulation so it is employed for the three-dimensional optimisations in addition to parallelisation of the flow and adjoint solvers with OpenMP. A three-dimensional Navier- Stokes optimisation of the ONERA M6 wing is presented. After describing the concept of Blended Wing-Body and the studies carried out on this aircraft, several aerodynamic optimisations are performed on this geometry with the capability developed in this thesis.

Title as it appears in MIT Degrees Awarded booklet, Sept. 2008: Viral communication in Chinese online forums
This thesis explores various aspects of the online Bulletin Board System (BBS) world as they relate to the possibilities of the public sphere in China. It addresses two major questions: what has BBS brought to China where traditional media primarily serve as the mouthpiece of the government? And, why are Chinese netizens, especially younger generation, particularly enthusiastic about this online platform? Through a full- dimensional view into BBS'S information communication mechanism and BBS users' identities, social behaviors and values, we investigate the pros and cons of BBS in terms of its potential to contribute to cyberdemocracy in China. The Introduction addresses research motivations, critical questions, and research goals. It also provides an overview of China's Internet landscape and a brief review of Chinese BBS studies. Chapter One walks through the history and development of BBS in China, and analyzes the demographics and online behavioral patterns of BBS users. Chapter Two looks into the distinct information communication mechanism of BBS as well as BBS regulation and censorship in China. Chapter Three looks at a cohort of BBS users, exploring who are using BBS in China, why they are enthusiastic about this online community, and what are their distinct identities, social behaviors and values. The Conclusion makes explicit the relevance of these developments to the ongoing growth of the Chinese Public Sphere.

Abstract:
Perpetuating African ancestral customs, Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans avoid the African American identity crises illuminated by the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance. The poetry of Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Waring Cuney incorporate W.E.B. DuBois’ double-consciousness theory to reveal the identity issues and ancestral alienation plaguing African Americans at the turn of the twentieth-century. In comparison, unique political and social circumstances in New Orleans allowed enslaved Africans to practice their ancestral customs weekly. The preservation of this heritage fostered a black community in New Orleans rich in traditions, pride and self-conviction. The development of Mardi Gras Indian culture and the allusions to Africa in Harlem poetry reveal the power of ancestry to establish identity.

Abstract:
Tire blowout is one of the most dangerous tire malfunctions which could result in severe property damage, personal injury, even loss of life. In the existing literatures, active tire blowout fail-safe control strategies based on rules or optimal control have been proposed. However, little attention has been put on driver behavior, which plays an important role in the stability performance control when tire blowout is experienced. Because of the uncertainties of failure mode and failure level, most of existing active control strategies are not easy to be implemented. This paper presents the research work on stability control for tire blowout vehicle, considering the driver behavior at the emergent scenario. The Electro Hydraulic Brake (EHB) based Brake by Wire (BBW) system is used as the brake system, which can regulate the wheel brake force individually and accurately. The simulation results show that stability and brake efficiency can be achieved in tire blowout fail-safe control by combining the driver operation model and BBW.

Abstract:
BBW (Brake by Wire) system improved day by day, as safety control of transport is one of the most pressing issues. A new EHB (electric hydraulic brake) booster has been proposed in this paper to develop cars in a way that it can reduce a possibility of accidents and minimizing their consequences. EHB with main cylinder electric booster is a typical BBW system. As no vacuum used to drive the EHB system, it is the best choice for the modern transportation technology. The effect of the brake is comfortable because of the motor, which is used to assist in braking and it makes braking softer. Also in case of any fault, emergency braking is always available which is fully manual and without the assistance of any motor. After the Analysis of many EHB booster designs, in this paper, a locking and unlocking hook system is introduced to control the braking system. It is a first approach that is simple and cost-effective. This brake system is an excellent choice because it is very safe, calculated, and serviceable in complete electrical vehicles. We used gear transmission system to achieve the required braking force with a little amount of torque. We also used SOLIDWORKS to design the model of the EHB booster and test dynamics. Introduced a mathematical model to change motor torque to linear force by using a ball screw mechanism. We verified it with MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation and Amesim model simulation. Reaction force, due to the fluid present in the main cylinder, was taken into account and a closed loop MATLAB/SIMULINK model was utilized to check kinematics of the designed booster.

Abstract:
In this study, numerical computation was carried out for evaluating the effects of the design parameter variations on the added resistance of Aframax tanker in head seas. The design of experiments (DOE) was used to efficiently conduct the numerical simulations with the hull form variations and save computational resources. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code based on the continuity and Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation was used for the numerical simulation. The simulation was performed in a short wave condition where the wave length was half of the ship length, which is expected to be most frequent in the vessel operation. Five design parameters of fore-body hull form were selected for the variations: design waterline length (DWL), bulbous bow height (BBH), bulbous bow volume (BBV), bow flare angle (BFA) and bow entrance angle (BEA). Each parameter had two levels in the variations, thus total 32 cases were designed initially. The results of the numerical simulations were analyzed statistically to determine the main effects and correlations in the five design parameters variations. Among them, the most significant parameter that influences on the added resistance in waves was DWL, followed by BBV and BEA. The other parameters had little effects on the added resistance in waves. By the computations, it was revealed that Extending DWL and decreasing BEA promoted the reflection of waves more toward the side than forward. In addition, there existed two-way interactions for the following two-factor combinations: DWL-BFA, DWL-BEA, DWL-BBV, BBH-BBV.

Abstract:
Brake-by-wire (BBW) systems can be used for enhanced safety braking of intelligent vehicles and also for environmentally friendly vehicles such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). The electronic wedge brake (EWB) is one of the brake-by-wire systems with a self-energizing effect. The EWB is faster than the conventional hydraulic brake and requires only about one-tenth the power to operate. However, the EWB can be unstable unless controlled properly since the self-energizing effect can unintentionally lock up the vehicle’s wheels. In addition, the self-energizing effect is very sensitive to environment and parametric variances, e.g. friction, temperature, speed, load, etc. In this paper, two control algorithms for the EWB are introduced and compared each other in performance. The performance of the proposed control algorithms is verified in simulations.

Abstract:
In this paper, a new braking system EWB (Electronic Wedge Brake) with multi-rollers is presented. EWB is a BBW (Brake by Wire) braking system, using self-reinforcement effect of the wedge mechanism. This effect makes EWB reduce consumption of electricity. Compared with traditional EMB (Electronic Mechanical Brake), EWB can work at lower power supply, such as 12V, which makes EWB has great advantage over those EMB braking systems with higher power supply, e.g.42V. The proposed design can realize normal braking function, and also can realize parking braking. In this paper, the configuration of EWB with multi-rollers is presented, and the modelling of main parts of the EWB system is given using the software Matlab/Simulink. Meanwhile, the EWB experimental bench is built, and preliminary experiments are carried out. The results of experiment show the practicability of the proposed design.

In ASME 2003 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2003-42548.

Abstract:
Both automakers and customers keep on pursuing better fuel economy, performance and driveability. A “mild” hybrid drivetrain is of great interest due to its potential capability on improving these targets. This drivetrain contains a spark ignition (SI) engine, an integrated starter/alternator (ISA), a torque converter (TC), a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a final drive (FD), a driveshaft, a brake-by-wire (BBW) system and wheels. While the challenge is to model and to develop an optimal control algorithm for this hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), this paper will focus only on the modeling aspect. Model-based control design and the nature of human perceptible driveability issues require low-frequency dynamic models. Therefore, a nonlinear control-oriented model which is sufficiently accurate but not excessively complicated is proposed here. Simulation results demonstrate that this model is effective to capture the main behaviors of vehicle dynamics and to evaluate fuel economy, performance and driveability objectively.

Abstract:
This paper presents a detailed analytical model development which can describe the dynamic behavior of the electromechanical brake-by-wire (BBW) system over the entire operating range. The complete model has 10 degree-of-freedom (DOF) and includes essential nonlinearities such as gear backlashes, Coulomb frictions, and disk gap clearance. Such a full model is reduced to 6 degree-of-freedom model in SIMULINK for simulation study of the effectiveness and the achievable performance of different hardware and controller designs, an invaluable tool in the early design stage of a product. Simulation results show that the model is able to reproduce various nonlinear characteristics including typical structural hysteresis as shown in real brake assembly. The linearized version of the full nonlinear model is then obtained for its modal properties to understand the modes that are critical to the low frequency dynamics of the overall system. The results of the modal analyses are subsequently utilized to obtain two simplified models, one for non-contact mode and the other for the contact mode of operation. The concepts of two simplified models well capture the dynamic characteristics of the system over the frequencies of interest and are being used in the controller (e.g., clamping force control) and estimator (e.g., gap clearance estimation) designs that are under investigation.
