Cooper, Tim. "Richard Baxter and antinomianism." Thesis, University of Canterbury. History, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4490.

Abstract:
In the following pages the soteriological and literary career of Richard Baxter (1615- 1691) is charted vis-a-vis seventeenth-century English Antinomianism, an increasingly marginalised doctrine of justification by faith alone without works through the imputation of Christ's righteousness to the believer. Whereas historians have previously seen this doctrine as a by-product of high Calvinism, this thesis argues that it found its origins in Luther; and where they contend that the Antinomians (such as Tobias Crisp or John Saltmarsh) were radical subversives, this thesis responds by demonstrating their conservative aspirations. Antinomianism provides a valuable marker with which to measure Baxter's progress through the seventeenth century. Essentially, this thesis explains why his personality and convictions reacted so heatedly to Antinomianism; it establishes the pattern whereby his fear of Antinomianism waxed and waned on three occasions throughout his life; it accounts for his fear, by linking it to the context of the 1640s, where law and obedience seemed everywhere under threat; it assesses the nature of his various attempts to eradicate Antinomian doctrine wherever he found it; and, finally, it describes the effect of his encounters with Antinomianism on his own soteriology. None of this has ever been explored in detail. This study draws on a wide range of published and private source material, by Baxter, the "Antinomians" and their opponents alike. It begins by surveying Baxter's enormous historiography; it then sets Antinomianism in its historical context, before distilling the personal reasons why Baxter found it so objectionable. Its second half surveys Baxter's career in the light of Antinomianism, describing its recrudescence in the later seventeenth century and Baxter's attempts to beat it back. Ultimately, it seeks to show why Antinomianism is a valuable spotlight that throws new illumination on both Richard Baxter and his seventeenth-century English world.

In this work, we used a refined entropy sampling technique based on the Wang- Landau method and finite-size scaling techniques to study variations of the Baxter-Wu model, namely: spin-$1/2$, spin-$1$, spin-$1$ with the crystal field interaction and was done a three-dimensional proposal for the model. It was also verified characteristics in the order parameter to be adopted in the simulations. The universality class and the critical temperature were calculated for the spin-$1/2$ case, and the results founded were in good agreement with the exact ones found in the literature. We sought to determine the kind of the phase transition that the model suffers for the spin-$1$ case, being carried out a detailed study for continuous and discontinuous phase transitions. The Baxter-Wu model with crystal field, $D$, had its phase diagram constructed, as well as the determination of the point at which discontinuous transitions finalizes. The critical exponent, $\nu$, was evaluated for several values of the crystal field, where we verified is variation along the critical line, with the existence of a peak, corroborating the existence of a multicritic behavior of the model. We also observed the existence of an anomaly in the specific heat, associated to the Schottky defect. This anomaly appears more clearly for values of $D \geq 1.990$. In the study of the order parameter, we verified that in the simulations one should not, when considering lattice sizes multiple of three, use the order parameter as the total magnetization of the lattice, but to consider the magnetization by sub-lattices. When working with sizes of lattices that are not multiples of three, it is not a problem to adopt the order parameter as the total magnetization of the lattice. A three-dimensional proposal was also made for the Baxter-Wu model, and its phase transition was characterized.

Abstract:
We have studied the critical, multicritical and first order behavior of the Spin-1 Baxter-Wu model in a crystal field. We have employed the mean field renormalization group approach and extensive Monte Carlo simulations using the single spin flip Metropolis algorithm and hystogram techniques. The global phase diagram is obtained and it is shown that the system belongs to the same universality class as the corresponding spin-1/2 version and presents a multicritical point separating a second order phase transition line from a first order line. The probability distribution of this pentacritical point is also determined.

Abstract:
Many historians have failed to consider seriously the role of the Brooks-Baxter War of 1874 in ending Reconstruction in Arkansas. Of those who have, they have not examined participants in the conflict nor attempted a robust study to determine who fought in the conflict. This thesis examines the soldiers and officers of the rival armies of Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter. It surveys the participants' class, race, professions, places of birth, and especially places of residence at the time of the conflict. This analysis of the Brooks-Baxter War reaffirms other historians' work on the fall of Reconstruction, while finding unique characteristics to Arkansas's redemption, like substantial support from white Arkansans for upholding Reconstruction and instances of black Arkansans supporting the redeemer army of Elisha Baxter. It concludes that Arkansas redemption was typical of other redemptions in the South in the mid-1870s, insofar as the powerful role that the state Democratic Party and Democratic elites played in ending Reconstruction in the state. The Brooks-Baxter War shows, however, that redemption in Arkansas had a more moderate face in that explicit, naked white supremacist rhetoric was not as apparent in the overthrow of Reconstruction there as in some other Deep Southern states.

Abstract:
The Yang-Baxter equation appear in various situations in physics and mathematics. For example it arises as a consistency condition in integrable models. The reflection equation (boundary Yang-Baxter equation) is a generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation to systems with a boundary. A further generalization to systems with defects which admits both reflection and transmission can be made, which results in reflection-transmission Yang-Baxter equations. In this thesis the Yang-Baxter equation and the reflection equation are presented. Representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and the blob algebra are used to construct matrices which solve the respective equations. For the reflection-transmission Yang-Baxter equations, steps toward a solution are taken by using a similar approach as for the first two cases, namely by finding an algebra whose representations can be used to construct matrices which solve the equations.

Abstract:
After an introduction and survey of the present state of research (chapter 1), the first section investigates Gildas Salvianus in its context by surveying the motives, rhetoric and practice of puritan pastoral ministry. Chapter 2 surveys extant treatises and sermons on pastoral ministry from the Edwardian reformation to the British civil wars, establishing the literary context for Baxter's Gildas Salvianus and highlighting the difference between published rhetoric and parish practice. Chapter 3 examines the way English Protestants used the word 'reformation' and the resulting impact on their pastoral priorities. Most significantly, this chapter highlights Richard Baxter's recovery of a Bucerian understanding of reformation which had been overshadowed by a dominant Genevan perspective for nearly a century. The first section culminates with Chapter 4's analysis of Baxter's Gildas Salvianus. This chapter argues that with the publication of Gildas Salvianus, Baxter overturns the conventional discussion of pastoral ministry of reconfiguring efforts for reformation along pastoral and evangelistic lines. This chapter also demonstrates the similarities between Baxter's pastoral strategy and practice and that of Martin Bucer and argues that Baxter's pastoral strategy was decisively influenced by his reading of Bucer's works on ministry and reformation. The second section examines the core elements of Richard Baxter's ministry in Kidderminster as outlined in Gildas Salvianus. Chapter 5 takes up the contentious issue of church discipline, with an overview of prior constraints and practices, an explanation of Baxter's own practice and how it developed, and an analysis of the evidence suggesting Bucer's influence on Baxter's approach. Chapter 6 traces Richard Baxter's experiences in the Civil War, and identifies those influences which led to the founding of the Worcestershire Association. Chapter 7 follows the development of Baxter's dual emphases on public preaching and personal instruction and details the evangelistic core of his pastoral strategy. The third and final section considers the immediate impact of Baxter's pastoral ministry and raises questions concerning Baxter's subsequent influence. Chapter 8 asks whether Baxter's Bucerian emphases might not be better explained by the survival of an intermediate Bucerian tradition in English Protestant ministry. It also argues that although Baxter's strategy was in part a reaction against the bankruptcy of the long-standing 'puritan' pastoral ideal, later admirers and historians overlooked its failure and mistakenly presumed continuity with Baxter's practice. Chapter 9 assesses Baxter's long-term relationship with Thomas Doolittle as an example of ministerial formation and a further means to assist Baxter's strategy to effect pastor-led, parish-centred reformation. The thesis concludes in Chapter 10 by summarizing Baxter's role in the development of 17th-Century pastoral ministry.

Abstract:
Darboux transformations constitute a very important tool in the theory of integrable systems. They map trivial solutions of integrable partial differential equations to non-trivial ones and they link the former to discrete integrable systems. On the other hand, they can be used to construct Yang-Baxter maps which can be restricted to completely integrable maps (in the Liouville sense) on invariant leaves. In this thesis we study the Darboux transformations related to particular Lax operators of NLS type which are invariant under the action of the so-called reduction group. Specifically, we study the cases of: 1) the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (with no reduction), 2) the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, where the corresponding Lax operator is invariant under the action of the Z₂-reduction group and 3) a deformation of the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, associated to a Lax operator invariant under the action of the dihedral reduction group. These reduction groups correspond to recent classification results of automorphic Lie algebras. We derive Darboux matrices for all the above cases and we use them to construct novel discrete integrable systems together with their Lax representations. For these systems of difference equations, we discuss the initial value problem and, moreover, we consider their integrable reductions. Furthermore, the derivation of the Darboux matrices gives rise to many interesting objects, such as Bäcklund transformations for the corresponding partial differential equations as well as symmetries and conservation laws of their associated systems of difference equations. Moreover, we employ these Darboux matrices to construct six-dimensional Yang-Baxter maps for all the afore-mentioned cases. These maps can be restricted to four-dimensional Yang-Baxter maps on invariant leaves, which are completely integrable; we also consider their vector generalisations. Finally, we consider the Grassmann extensions of the Yang-Baxter maps corresponding to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These constitute the first examples of Yang-Baxter maps with noncommutative variables in the literature.

Abstract:
The greatest feature of using a Baxter robot among other industrial robots is the ability to train this robot conveniently. The training of the robot could be done within a few minutes and it does not need so much knowledge of programming. However, this type of training feature is limited in functionality and needs frequent updating of the software and the license from the manufactural company. As the manufacturer of Baxter Robot no longer exists due to a merger, the thesis has twofold aims, (1) Exploring different functional, installation, calibration, troubleshooting and hardware features of the Baxter robot and (2) demonstrate the functionality of Baxter to perform general tasks of holding, lifting and moving of test objects from one desired position to another position using custom-made programs in Python. Owing to this, details about different software and hardware aspects of Baxter robot is presented in this thesis. Additionally, systematic laboratory tutorials are also presented in appendices for students who want to learn and operate the robot from simple to complicated tasks. In order to keep the Baxter operational for students and researchers in future, when there is no more help available from its manufacturer, this thesis endeavour to cover all these aspects. Thus, the thesis presents a brief understanding of how to use the Baxter Robot in a simple and efficient way to perform a basic industrial task. The kinematics part will show the concepts of forward and inverse kinematics and the DH (the Denavit–Hartenberg) parameters that are important to understand the end-effector position according to the world frame that will give the knowledge of those who are interested in the kinematics part of Baxter robot. The work of the thesis will make it easier to understand how to program a Baxter robot by using Python language and using the simplest way to move the arm to certain positions. The ROS principles, kinematics and Python language programs will provide a good platform to understand the usability of Baxter robot. Furthermore, easy to use laboratory tutorials are devised and are presented in the appendices. These laboratory tutorials will improve the understanding of the readers and provide a step-by-step guide of operating Baxter robot according to the principles of Robotics. In addition to all these points above, the thesis shows useful functions that are built in ROS (Robot Operating System) that make it easier to program the robot in an untraditional way which is one of a contribution of this thesis itself. The usual way to program the robots, in general, is to study the robot kinematics and calculate the position of the end-effector or the tool according to some frame or the world coordinate frame. This calculation can be done by the forward kinematics or the inverse kinematics. The set of programming Baxter robot in this thesis is not the complex calculation of the forward or the inverse kinematics. The tf (transform)tool in ROS has made it easier to reach the joint angles and program Baxter robot using Python.

Recently, unexpected connections have been discovered between characters of representations and lattice models in statistical mechanics. The bridge was first formed from Kuperberg's solution to the alternating sign matrix (ASM) conjecture. Kuperberg's proof of this conjecture, which enumerates ASMs, utilized a Yang-Baxter equation for a square ice model from statistical mechanics. In earlier work, Tokuyama and okada gave representation theoretic quantities as generating functions on certain symmetry classes of ASMs or generalizations of them. Brubaker, Bump, and Priedberg used a Yang-Baxter equation to reprove Tokuyama's result and this work seeks to do the same for a generalization of Okada's results in type B. We begin by defining the particular lattice model we study. We then imbue the lattice model with Boltzmann weights suggested by a bijection with a set of symmetric ASMs. These weights define a partition function, whose properties are studied by combinatorial and symmetric function methods over the next few chapters. This course of study culminates in the use of the Yang-Baxter equation for our ice model to prove that the partition function factors into a deformation of the Weyl denominator and a generalized character of a highest weight representation, both in type B. We conjecture that the resulting function is connected to metaplectic spherical Whittaker functions. In the last two chapters, we deal with two rather different approaches to computing Whittaker coefficients of metaplectic forms - one using a factorization of the unipotent radical to perform an integration and the other via Hecke operators on the metaplectic group.

Abstract:
Short-time simulations have been used with great frequency in the literature. That technique was discovered by Li, Shülke and Zheng that, inspired in previous works by Huse and Janssen et al., showed that generalizations of quantities like magnetization and the Binder´s cumulant exhibit universal behavior in the beginning of the simulation (early time behavior). The study of criticality in short-times provides an alternative way to estimate the dynamic critical exponent z, besides allowing the calculation of a new dynamic exponent θ, associated to the anomalous behavior of the magnetization. In the same way, time-dependent simulations became a useful tool to study phase transitions in cellular automata and also for spin models. In fact, the best estimates for the exponent z of the two-dimensional Ising model were obtained through the technique of damage spreading, introduced by Kauffman in the study of cellular automata, later widespread for spin models. In the first part of this work we used short-time Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the Baxter-Wu model, defined in a triangular lattice whose variables are Ising-like coupled by triplet interactions. We have obtained estimates for the dynamic critical exponents z and θ besides static exponents ß e Nû. Our results do not corroborate recent estimates by Santos and Figueiredo for the critical exponent z. In the second part of this work, we investigated the damage spreading in the one-dimensional Ising model under two dynamics introduced by Hinrichsen and Domany (HD). In particular, we study the effects of synchronous (parallel) and asynchronous (continuous dynamics) updating on the spreading properties. We showed that the damage does not spread when the second dynamic is implemented in an asynchronous way. We found that the rules for updating the damage produced by this dynamic, as the temperature goes to infinity and a certain parameter Lambda is zero, are equivalent to those of Grassberger’s well-known model A cellular automaton.

In this work we study the solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated to nineteen vertex models invariant by the parity-time symmetry from the perspective of algebraic geometry. We determine the form of the algebraic curves constraining the respective Boltzmann weights and found that they possess a universal structure. This allows us to classify the integrable manifolds in four different families reproducing three known models besides uncovering a novel nineteen vertex model in a unified way. The introduction of the spectral parameter on the weights is made via the parameterization of the fundamental algebraic curve which is a conic. The diagonalization of the transfer matrix of the new vertex model and its thermodynamic limit properties are discussed. We point out a connection between the form of the main curve and the nature of the excitations of the corresponding spin-1 chains.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the life and career of Sir Philip Baxter (1905-1989), particularly during the period following his arrival in Australia from England in 1950. But the thesis is not a conventional biographical study in terms of either the sources used or its guiding themes. Instead, my subject's values and attitudes are portrayed as reflections of a 'conservative style of thought', a concept developed by Karl Mannheim. This approach, centred on close readings of key texts, permits a deeper understanding of a figure who polarised opinion over a long career as Chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, and as Vice-Chancellor of the University of NSW. My picture of Baxter draws significantly on the Archives of the University of NSW, which provided the bulk of my primary sources, such as correspondence files, typescripts of articles and talks, newspaper clippings, official documents and personal memorabilia. This material is a substantial but curiously unrevealing source for Baxter's life. Although I rely largely on written material, on several important occasions I refer to discussions I had with Baxter's children, colleagues and students. Insights thereby gained into Baxter's childhood reading, and the circumstances of the composition of his play, The Day the Sun Rose in the West, profoundly influenced my portrayal of Baxter. Throughout, I argue for an appreciation of the significance of such material, even though in a more conventional study of an engineer/administrator it would be thought of only marginal interest. In Baxter's case, certainly, careful interpretation of such material enables the construction of a compelling portrait of the man despite the unrevealing primary records and the still often fervently partisan personal recollections of those who knew him. My major conclusion is that previous characterisations of Baxter as a cold war warrior of the post-war period in Australia have failed to appreciate the complexity and coherence of his attitudes and philosophy. Secondly, I demonstrate that the notion of a 'conservative style of thought' captures that complexity as evidenced in the many facets of Baxter's career and interests.

Abstract:
We study certain non-symmetric wavefunctions associated to the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger (QNLS) model, introduced by Komori and Hikami using representations of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra. In particular, they can be generated using a vertex operator formalism analogous to the recursion that defines the symmetric QNLS wavefunction in the quantum inverse scattering method. Furthermore, some of the commutation relations encoded in the Yang-Baxter equation are generalized to the non-symmetric case.

Abstract:
Aquests resultats estan continguts als Capítols 2 i 3.
This PhD thesis deals with the algebraic structure called non-commutative left brace, and with its applications for the non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Concretely, we study the following problems: (1) We construct all the non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated with a fixed non-commutative left brace. Moreover, we prove all the non-degenerate involutive solutions can be obtained from left braces with an analogous construction. These results are contained in Chapters 2 and 3. This reduces the problem of classification of non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation to the classification of non-commutative left braces, a problem that we study for the rest of the memoir. (2) In Section 4.1, we present two new methods to construct new left braces: extensions of left braces by trivial ideals, and matched product of left braces. These constructions are based on the analogous constructions of group theory. (3) Motivated by the extensions of left braces, in Section 4.2 we construct the first family of non-trivial simple left braces. We use the matched product method that we have defined previously to obtain this family. (4) Answering a question of Cedó, Jespers and del Río, we find the first exemple of finite p-group which is not the multiplicative group of any left brace. This proves that not all finite solvable groups are multiplicative groups of left braces. This results is contained in Section 4.3. (5) Finally, we classify all the left braces of order p, p^2 and p^3, where p is a prime. This result is contained in Section 4.4 and Chapter 5.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Aotearoa-New Zealand received Christianity as part of the colonial/missionary matrix of nineteenth century European expansion. Consequently the form and content of faith was largely shaped by factors distant both in geography and symbolic resonance. Christian theology maintains a cultural dissonance, particularly from an emergent Pakeha cultural indentity. The quest for contextualisation has become a familiar one in post-colonial societies, though not as vigorously pursued in Western nations as in other parts of the world. Only recently has attention been paid to the possibilities of local theologies in New Zealand. C.S. Songs suggests Perhaps a poet can tell us how we should go about theology. In this he is pointing to the necessity of contextual theology using domestic cultural product as an important source for theological reflection, encapsulating as it does local history and experience. James K. Baxter, one of New Zealands finest poets, was also a Catholic and social critic. In the last years of his life particularly, the major part of his writing, both poetry and prose, was concerned with his vision of a Christian humanism which might make a practical difference in the immediate context. He established a community at the small settlement of Jerusalem beside the Whanganui River, where he sought to give tangible expression to a mixture of radical Christian acceptance and Maori spiritual values. This thesis examines Baxters contribution to the task of contextual theology. In particular, it draws on a great deal of unpublished prose material, until now largely unexamined, from the late period of his life. This, together with the wider body of his writings, is used to investigate his religious thought and movement within it. After an introductory and methodological chapter, the thesis examines Baxters categorisation of the fragmented and spiritually bereft nature of Pakeha existence. It then seeks to follow the major themes of his own powerfully articulated responses to this condition, in a series of chapters introduced with Maori terms; a cultural connection which was important to Baxter. The investigation uncovers a commitment to a Christian humanism that recognises the immanence of Christ, and a rather startling manifesto which parallels the approach of Liberation Theology in a distinctly New Zealand context. The survey of Baxters religious thought concludes with a critical reflection on his themes. A final chapter considers the contribution which Baxter makes toward the challenge of contextual theology. Considering the relationship between poetic reflection and theology, it stops short of classifying Baxter as a theologian. Rather the argument is advanced that he has provided vital raw material to the ongoing task of local theology; his role is one of funding contextual theology symbolically. Baxter is significant in the development of theology in Aotearoa-New Zealand, both for his contribution and his encouragement to further reflection.

Abstract:
The literature of James K. Baxter features many thematic and stylistic parallels with that of his father, Archibald. The material used in this thesis, most of which is previously unpublished, will illustrate how this is apparent from the outset of James's literary career. Substantial use is also made of a personal interview conducted with James's brother, Terence. Archie's unpublished work contains many expressions of his beliefs and principles, and attention to these is essential in order to achieve a better understanding, not only of his own literature, but also to appreciate how these beliefs came to be realised in James's verse from a very early period. Archie's poetry, traditionally ignored by critical opinion, will be discussed in some detail, particularly in relation to theme and style. Much of his verse is Romantic, while the remainder is often an expression of pacifist or socialist beliefs. A significant amount of James's early verse reiterates these beliefs also, as the World War II period had a dramatic effect on him and coincided with the beginning of his literary career. Archie's unpublished, factually based novel is important to this discussion as it is evidence that a tradition of ancestral mythology was well established by previous Baxter generations. Therefore James, rather than beginning this mythology himself, as has been thought, actually had a substantial body of myth and legend at his disposal should he choose to use it His posthumously published novel, Horse, is not only indebted to this legacy, but also illustrates his conscious desire to make himself a part of that same mythology. The extent and obvious nature of many literary parallels and similarities in work of Archie and James highlight the fact that, although much of Archie's material remains unpublished, it is a useful source for developing a greater understanding of James's literature.

Abstract:
The Canadian artist IAIN BAXTER&, known before 2005 as Iain Baxter, created an innovative Conceptual Art practice in the mid-60s that continues to make important contributions even today. He has maintained a strong collaborative element in his art, as witnessed by his role in the short-lived group IT (1965) and N.E. THING CO. (1966-1978)--an actual incorporated company consisting of BAXTER& and his first wife, Ingrid Baxter as chief officers--and by the addition of an ampersand to his legal name in 2005 to signify the open-ended quality of his work that relies on viewers‘ contributions to help determine its meaning. This dissertation introduces the term "Pop-inflected Conceptual Art" to describe how BAXTER& merges his use of information technologies, modern and ubiquitous materials, and pedestrian activities with a desire to question the received role and purpose of art through an epistemological approach. By presenting BAXTER&‘s key influences—Zen Buddhism, as described by D.T. Suzuki and Alan Watts, and the communications theory of Marshall McLuhan—this study describes five underlying principles that inform BAXTER&‘s work individually and in unison. These principles are: his preference for foregrounding the banal; creation of the "infoscape" that merges the natural world and the constant stream of information within North American culture; proclivity for experimenting with such unlikely media as plastics and telecommunication media; understanding of art‘s kinship with language; and usage of pseudonyms. This study describes the core terms of McLuhan‘s theory in order to analyze this thinker‘s significance for BAXTER&‘s work; moreover, it presents how the above five principles are evident throughout the three main divisions in BAXTER&‘s artistic career: before, during, and after his tenure with N.E. THING CO. Through an analysis of key examples of many of this artist‘s works, this study also determines affinities to both established Pop artists and his Conceptual Art peers, while distinguishing how his Zen and McLuhanesque hybrid approach, which includes a consistent reliance on humor to communicate definitively his ideas, sets him apart from these groups of artists and foregrounds his role as the precursor to such younger Vancouver photoconceptual artists as Ian Wallace, Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, and Stan Douglas.

Abstract:
This paper provides two generalizations of differential and integral categories: Leibniz and generalized Rota-Baxter categories, which capture certain algebraic structures, and q-categories, which capture structures of quantum calculus. In the search for new examples of differential and integral categories, it was observed that many structures were not quite examples but satisfied certain properties and not others. This leads us to the definition of Leibniz, Rota-Baxter and proto-FTC categories. In generalizing Rota-Baxter categories further to an arbitrary weight, we show that we recapture Ribenboim's generalized power series as a monad on vector spaces with a generalized integral transformation. This also subsumes the renormalization operator on Laurent series, which has applications in the quantum realm. Finally, we define quantum differential and quantum integral categories, show that they recapture the usual notions of quantum calculus on polynomials, and construct a new example to indicate their potential usefulness outside of that specific setting

Abstract:
Recent advancements in Deep Learning have accelerated the capabilities of robotic systems in terms of visual perception, object manipulation, automated navigation, and human-robot collaboration. The capability of a robotic system to manipulate objects in unstructured environments is becoming an increasingly necessary skill. Due to the dynamic nature of these environments, traditional methods, that require expert human knowledge, fail to adapt automatically. After reviewing the relevant literature a method was proposed to utilise deep transfer learning techniques to detect object grasps from coloured depth images. A grasp describes how a robotic end-effector can be arranged to securely grasp an object and successfully lift it without slippage. In this study, a ResNet-50 convolutional neural network (CNN) model is trained on the Cornell grasp dataset. The training was completed within 30 hours using a workstation PC with accelerated GPU support via an NVIDIA Titan X. The trained grasp detection model was further evaluated with a Baxter research robot and a Microsoft Kinect-v2 and a successful grasp detection accuracy of 93.91% was achieved on a diverse set of novel objects. Physical grasping trials were conducted on a set of 8 different objects. The overall system achieves an average grasp success rate of 65.0% while performing the grasp detection in under 25 milliseconds. The results analysis concluded that the objects with reasonably straight edges and moderately pronounced heights above the table are easily detected and grasped by the system.

In this work, we study three topics related to the Yang-Baxter operator: endomorphism algebras and the q-trace, constructions of Yang-Baxter algebras and Yang-Baxter coalgebras, quantum SB_\inftyS-algebras, and quantum quasi-shuffle algebras. They are the quantizations of the corresponding objects in the sense that the usual flip is replaced by a braiding. This work is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 : Let S(V,\sigma)S be a braided space with a braiding S\sigmaS of Hecke type and such that S\dim S_\sigma^i(V)=lS for some sufficiently large i. We study thé endomorphism algebra S\oplus_{k=l }^i EndS_\sigma^k(V)S. After defining three associative products on this space, we construct a q-analogue of the usual trace, called q-trace, for any endomorphism of SS_\sigma^k(V)S. This new trace is an algebra morphism with respect to the third product. And we show that this q-trace is just the quantum trace up to some scalar. Chapter 2: We introduce several methods to construct Yang-Baxter (or short for YB) algebras and Yang-Baxter coalgebras. They include: Yetter-Drinfel'd modules with extra compatible conditions, quantum-shuffle algebras and quantum SB_\inftyS-algebras. Quantum SB_\inftyS-algebras are generalizations of both YB algebras and SB_\inftyS-algebras. We also introduce 2-YB algebras, which are motivated by the work of Loday and Ronco, to provide quantum SB_\inftyS-algebras. Chapter 3: Using the tool of quantum SB_\inftyS-algebras, we quantize quasi-shuffle algebras in the spirit of Rosso's quantum shuffle algebras. We study various properties of these quantum quasi-shuffle algebras. For instance, the universal property, the commutativity and so on

Abstract:
Pakeha identity has long been problematic, caught in a straddling stance between European co-ordinates of origin, and life in Aotearoa. This has been particularly evident over the last three decades: with the rise of tino rangatiratanga, Pakeha identity has undergone something of a crisis. Group identity, especially in such periods of crisis, requires narratives that re-imagine being and belonging. Poetry by Pakeha both displays the problem with identity at the cross cultural threshold between Maori and Pakeha, asking what happens when Pakeha engage cross-culturally with te ao Maori, appropriating te reo Maori and drawing on Maoritanga, to re-vision and reconfigure identity? And how does such an approach shape the imagining of Pakeha identity? I study, in parallel, the cross-cultural poetry of James K. Baxter and Glen Colquhoun in relation to these questions. Borrowing a conceptual metaphor from Colin McCahon, I examine these cross-cultural poems in detail as load-bearing structures. I pay particular attention to the way in which, in purpose, design and materials, they function to re-imagine Pakeha identity in reciprocal relationship with te ao Maori. Aware of the problems of culture-crossing, at the outset I establish a historical and interpretive framework for the poetry. Furthermore, I discuss the question of appropriation, arguing for an ethical distinction between appropriation and misappropriation based on a cross-cultural relationship of faithful and reciprocal engagement. I conclude that Baxter and Colquhoun are singular and radical in their reconfiguration of Pakeha identity. Baxter embraces te ao Maori in a direct challenge to Pakeha nationalism, prescribing the necessary corrective of the tuakana-teina dynamic to Pakeha identity and its relationship with te ao Maori. Writing after the Maori renaissance, Glenn Colquhoun irreverently opens up a further reconfiguration of cross-cultural relationship, pushing both Maori and Pakeha beyond a cultural dichotomy towards a mutually defining complementarity. Both place themselves on the cultural threshold of language, embracing the tensions of the cross-cultural scenario. The result is cross-cultural poetry, load-bearing structures that manifest the tension and ambivalence of the settler cultures straddling identity, enacting what it is to be Pakeha.
