Nos últimos anos, não apenas no Brasil, alguns autores têm se dedicado à investigação das principais (des)afinidades eletivas entre a obra do filósofo alemão Theodor W. Adorno, principal representante da primeira geração da assim chamada Escola de Frankfurt, e a obra de escritores mais recentes identificados com a perspectiva filosófica designada de pós-estruturalismo e com o controverso conceito de pós-modernismo. Uma tese que atravessa o esforço daqueles autores consiste no fato de a filosofia adorniana ter antecipado e teorizado sobre temáticas que são caras ao pós-estruturalismo e ao pós-modernismo. Este trabalho enceta uma tentativa de levá-lo adiante nesta dissertação, elencando, como interlocutor de Theodor W. Adorno, os escritos do sociólogo polonês de origem judaica, Zygmunt Bauman, cuja sociologia da pós-modernidade (ou da modernidade líquida), como inúmeros de seus comentadores pontuam, transita e retoma temáticas que são caras à teoria crítica da Escola de Frankfurt e ao pós-estruturalismo, mantendo-se nessa ambivalência. Considerando este quadro, a pesquisa investiga a maneira pela qual a sociologia de Bauman retoma e procura fazer avançar a consagrada crítica da razão instrumental adorniana, estabelecendo, como chave de leitura para evidenciar essa atualização, a presença de Auschwitz como chaga da modernidade na filosofia de um e na sociologia de outro. No esforço de traçar as (des)afinidades, procura ressaltar também os pontos em que as perspectivas teóricas de ambos se afastam, momento em que a psicologia social profunda (a psicanálise) e o papel desempenhado pela formação cultural (e a educação), no sentido da não repetição do passado nazi-fascista no presente, funcionam como uma espécie de divisor de águas entre a análise de Adorno e a de Bauman. Nesse movimento, analisa ainda a importância assumida pelo comportamento moral autônomo no trabalho dos dois, no sentido de se contrapor à frieza burguesa que está na base da racionalidade instrumental e que foi responsável pelo assassinato de milhões de judeus nos campos concentracionais e de extermínio, destacando alguns aspectos comuns entre a não acabada filosofia moral adorniana e a sociologia com uma consciência moral baumaniana, no que, como demonstrado no APÊNDICE, o filósofo moral Emmanuel Levinas ganha importância.

Abstract:

Postmodern social philosophy of Z. Bauman is considered in this master’s thesis making emphasis on its main frames and aspects. The thinker analyses the phenomenon of globalization basing on dialectics of globalism and localism and states that globalization in fact is glocalization, that means some are becoming more and more global while others become more local and provincial. Globalization and localization are two sides of this process: some are globalizing because others are localizing, and there are no any without others. In Z. Bauman’s opinion, the phenomenon of globalization has become vital for the concept of the society itself. Release from the panoptical individuals’ levelling mechanisms and regimes of modernity marks the end of the traditional community as well as reign of individualistic communitarianism. In his philosophy, Z. Bauman emphasizes significance of growing urbanization and individualization as its result for decay of collective relations. This problem discloses transformations of postmodern ethics and morality. Z. Bauman defines postmodern morality as morality without ethics. Following E. Levinas’ asymmetry of I-Thou relation, the thinker analyses problems of individual’s identity, mass culture and Holocaust. Z. The aim of this dissertation is to present Christian spirituality in the Moltmannian perspective and its experience in society. To present the current picture of society we will use the analyzes of the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman that raises the frailties, despair and despair of a liquid society. With the reflections of the theologian J?rgen Moltmann we will spread through his sensitivity the hopes for an incarnated and committed spirituality. The text is systematized in three chapters; In the first it was exposed how to understand Christian spirituality and its centrality; From this nucleus converge the schools of spiritualities with various charisms that were born from the experiences of groups led by founders of Communities and Congregations. Yet in this chapter we have already inferred Moltmann's thinking on Christian spirituality; Which is not limited to those consecrated in a religious congregation, but to all Christians. In the second chapter; We approach the despair that we point out as fragilities and despair of a consumer society and dissatisfied with life. The values for a solid life with respect, alterity, and altruism have been liquefied and gained ground to the exacerbated preoccupation with the body and the addictive mania for financial power. The third chapter retakes the Moltmannian reflections on Christian spirituality. For Moltmann there is no such thing as a spiritual life disembodied from reality, hence the need to rescue the victims of hopelessness and lead them to a vitality that will free them from oppression. Liberation is part of Christian spirituality in the Moltmannian perspective; The transformation of the world happens when the Christian acts in society and fights indifference and faces injustice. From the arbitrariness that oppresses the spiritual life there is the neglect towards the Planet and its ecological system; Pollution, deforestation are mistreating the Earth and jeopardizing the existence of Creation. For this reason, Moltmann in his sensibility presents us with an ecological spirituality which transforms our attitudes towards our neighbor and towards all Creation.
O objetivo desta disserta??o ? apresentar a espiritualidade crist? na perspectiva moltmanniana e sua viv?ncia na sociedade. Para apresentar o quadro atual da sociedade, utilizaremos as an?lises do soci?logo Zygmunt Bauman, autor que levanta as fragilidades, desesperos e desesperan?as de uma sociedade l?quida. Com as reflex?es do te?logo J?rgen Moltmann discorreremos, dissertando por meio da sensibilidade expressa em sua obra sobre as esperan?as para uma espiritualidade encarnada e comprometida. O texto est? sistematizado em tr?s cap?tulos: no primeiro foi exposto como compreender a espiritualidade crist? e sua centralidade ? desse n?cleo, convergem as escolas de espiritualidades com diversos carismas que nasceram das experi?ncias de grupos liderados por fundadores de Comunidades e Congrega??es. Abstract:

The inadvertent or deliberate introduction of bacterial pathogens into drinking water systems can lead to serious public health consequences. As a result, rapid sampling opportunities within distribution systems are needed that can provide information on the source, species and fate of introduced pathogens. In this study, a porous media biofilm reactor was used to investigate the ability of an established mixed-species drinking water biofilm to immobilize cyan-labeled Escherichia coli 0157:H7 as a model pathogen. Test reactors were colonized with biofilm for two or three weeks at 0.5 mg/l C, resulting in the formation of thin and thick biofilms, respectively. Colonized reactors were then injected with slug doses of approximately 1 x 109 cfu E. coli O157:H7. Plate counts were able to successfully close a mass balance on E. coli O157:H7 around the reactor and were used measure the fractions of inocula immobilized within reactors. Compared with control reactors (0.22%), reactors colonized for two or three weeks immobilized significantly more cells (0.75% and 9.37% respectively). For E. coli O157:H7 passing through the reactor, retardation with respect to the bulk fluid was measured. Retardation factors (Rf) indicated that cells traveling through colonized reactors were significantly retarded compared to those traveling through clean control reactors, resulting in a prolonged washout of cells. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) and direct microscopic counts were also used to enumerate E. coli O157:H7 cells. Threshold cycle (CT) values from qPCR typically underestimated the plate counts for effluent samples and were highly inconsistent with respect to enumerating cells entrained in biofilm or attached to reactor surfaces. Possible inhibition by biofilm-associated substances was investigated. Direct microscopic counts were not possible when homogenized biofilm was present and otherwise consistently overestimated plate counts by an average of 0.6 orders of magnitude. This data shows that engineered porous media systems colonized with biofilm may be an effective tool for immobilizing pathogens from bulk flow in drinking water distribution systems.

Abstract:

This paper investigates the discriminatory situation of Romas in contemporary Europe with the use of Zygmunt Bauman’s analytical framework he developed on the situation of Jews and the Holocaust. Characteristics of the Modern Society have, according to Bauman, created opportunities for cornerstones of discrimination to occur and together with facilitators they can hold the discrimination alive and make it long lasting. In the case Bauman examined, it all ended in genocide. With the aim to investigate how Bauman’s analytical framework would explain why Roma discrimination could continue and by using a qualitative method of text substance analysis of foremost academic articles, the situation of the Romas are presented in a code according to the concepts in a scheme of Bauman’s analytical framework. There is no genocide going on today against Romas, but when looking through the glasses of Bauman and implementing his analytical framework on the Roma situation, only one stone is missing for it to happen. This paper concludes that there are no reasons to deny that a new Holocaust can happen in the modern society of Europe, but this time with another minority group as victims. Racism seems to be there, the only missing element is a stronger belief in racial hierarchy. This paper also offers an analytical scheme for future studies on other groups that have been suffering of long lasting discrimination, to further emphasize how Bauman’s framework would be able to become generalized on discrimination.

Abstract:

In this dissertation I address the question of why some social groups classify some people and groups as strangers. To answer the question I focus the stranger in the writings of the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman.

According to Bauman, the social construction of the stranger cannot be compared with the asymmetrical relation between an in-group and an out-group. An in-group stands for friends and proximity. It considers the out-group as the enemy at a distance. The hierarchical and a reciprocal relationship that exists between the in-group and the out-group is a part of the social order. The stranger, on the other hand, is constructed in the ambivalent position between the in-group and the out-group. Since there is no room for the stranger in an orderly world she has to be dealt with in a way that keeps the world free from incongruity.

Since Bauman considers the moral consequence of cultural classification, his work is also relevant for the question of living with the stranger. Leaving the Occidental rational tradition in favour of a phenomenological tradition, Bauman offers a view that considers the encounter with the stranger as a moral meeting. Highlighting responsibility, instead of social arrangements, law or tradition, Bauman visualises the stranger as a moral subject and not as aparticular social type, one who is constantly out of place

The theoretical considerations of the social making of the stranger, and the moral understanding of living for the stranger, contribute to a deeper understanding about the institutional origins of social marginalisation and cultural exclusion.

Abstract:

A presente tese é um estudo teórico sobre a (des)articulação da ação política, da identidade e da ideologia na atual sociedade global. Utilizaram-se, como referência de análise, os conceitos de identidade e ideologia para demonstrar que ao se cruzarem e conectarem com a ação política, sob os auspícios da globalização, erosionam-se e promovem a construção de uma sociedade fragmentada e desigual. Analisa-se a influência da compressão do tempo e do espaço no fomento de jogos de poder e a alteração das relações sociais, económicas e políticas. A visão de Zygmunt Bauman sobre a modernidade serve de fundamento para o entendimento da atuação dos indivíduos face ao modus-vivendi da atualidade, para os jogos de poder que se criam e consequente fenecimento das instituições face à ausência de uma consciência axiológico-normativa. A crise em que se vive na atual era global desgasta a possibilidade de um futuro e impele a necessidade do nascimento (ou da reinvenção) de um novo paradigma. Um paradigma onde o tempo seja o do relógio biológico, onde as vozes dos invisíveis sejam ouvidas, onde as revoluções armadas não sejam vistas como instrumento, mas como algo que permita uma mudança civilizatória, um reavivar de saberes e fazeres ancestrais. Este novo instrumento encontra-se num novo princípio de desenvolvimento, que anula a ideia capitalista do lucro a qualquer preço, pela ideia de que só há ganhosse todos ganharem; ABSTRACT : The present work is a theoretical study on the (dis) articulation of political action, identity and ideology in the current global society. We use as an analysis reference the concepts of identity and ideology to demonstrate that when they cross and connect with political action under the auspices of globalization they erode and promote the construction of a fragmented and unequal society. It analyses how the compression of time and space came to foment power plays and the alteration of social, economic and political relations. Zygmunt Bauman's vision of modernity explains the discontinuity of modernity, analyses the performance of individuals vis-a-vis the new modus-vivendi, the collapse of the Institutions of by the absence of an axiological-normative consciousness. The crisis in which we live in the present global age erodes the possibility of a future and drives the need for the birth or reinvention of a new paradigm. A paradigm where time is the biological clock, where the voices of the invisible are heard, not having the armed revolutions as an instrument, but something that allows a civilizing change, a revival of knowledge and actions. This new instrument lies in a new principle of development, which annuls the capitalist idea of profit at any cost, by the idea that there are only gains if everyone wins.
