Abstract In 2020, Europe announced the New European Bauhaus (NEB). While the initiative intends to achieve EU sustainability goals, framing it under the name of the Bauhaus brings various challenges and issues to the fore. In this article, we analyze the critiques of the original Bauhaus and the NEB to understand the challenges that the NEB lighthouse project Bauhaus of the Seas Sails (BoSS) inherits by adhering to the Bauhaus vision and name. We unveil the problematic dynamics of Eurocentric modernity's myths of universalism and better living through technology and on the Bauhaus's and NEB's position in global power structures. Instead of assuming a tabula rasa approach and replicating problematic structures unknowingly, we bring these three aspects to BoSS to find questions as orientation points to help steer away from problematic aspects inherited by reanimating the Bauhaus name and its legacy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The addition to the College of Architecture and Design Weimar, the former Bauhaus Weimar, consolidates the two existing buildings designed by Henry van de Velde into a new complex with 40,000 sf of existing building and 100, 000 sf of new structure. The new facility contains a 300 seat auditorium, library, lecture and seminar rooms, administrative offices, cafeteria, photo lab and gallery as well as extended studios and offices.Contrary to the brief of the competition which only requires an addition for the Department of Architecture, the position taken here, proposes an interweaving of the Art and Architecture Departments. The Bauhaus interweaves these two schools in the same way as the definition of art and architecture have come to include each other. The additional structure integrates therefore the idea that the building is used both by architecture and art students.Since the project is for a College of Architecture and Art, I believe the new College of Art and Architecture must confront the challenges of current thinking; the search for a new integration of concept and form it must move over the deconstructive approach by achieving a complexity not as a contradiction but as an acceptance of the duality of existence. This interelationship is represented in the famous play "Faust". Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who spent almost 60 years (and most of them in Weimar) working on this piece, the play raises diverse and contradictory questions: 1. of knowledge, 2. of identity and 3. of morality in terms that reflect the 'doubleness' of all beings in nature. Faust becomes important when we recognize the memory of such themes in Weimar. The pieces, and hence, the structure of the play are not composed as a narrative but as an dialogue of different stories. The development of the design parallels the play in which the play becomes the concept and the concept becomes the play; several events - each centered on one major event- provide the scenes for the building.

Abstract:
A major figure to emerge in the history of American photography is Carlotta Corpron (1901-1987), who taught art at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas from 1935-1968. The rediscovery of her abstract images created during the 1940s reflects the growing recognition of the experimental photography at the New Bauhaus in Chicago from 1937-1946. Corpron's abstract photographs were stimulated by her interaction with Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Gyorgy Kepes. Corpron was an innovator in the development of abstract photography in the United States. This thesis connects her work to that of Moholy-Nagy and Gyorgy Kepes as well as other major figures in American photography of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This paper describes the use of electronic space in a fourth year undergraduate architectural design studio. It attempts to address the importance of developing a design process that is redefined by the use of computing, integrating concept and perception. This goal is set in the studio exercise, an international student design competition to design an addition to the school of architecture at the original Bauhaus/Weimar. The studio involved re-evaluating the Bauhaus principles of integrating the artist and the craftsman, but in contemporary or post-industrial terms. In 1989 the Wall came down. Seamless access of western telecommunications and media became greatly responsible for the crumbling of the rigid machine-age soviet technocracy; and with it, the former east German city of Weimar, home to the first Bauhaus, was once again a living part of architectural history. When the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture announced an international student competition to design a new addition to the school of architecture at the original Bauhaus/Weimar, we immediately decided that this should be an Electronic Bauhaus.

“The Bauhaus believes the machine to be our modern medium of design and seeks to come to terms with it.”—Walter Gropius, The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus German architect Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919 and after fourteen prolific years, it closed. Despite its short tenure, the ramifications of the Bauhaus are still present in architectural education and practice. Its core objective was a radical, and still unrealized, concept: the unity of art and technology. The introduction of contemporary digital tools, techniques, and materials make this unity possible in new and profound ways thereby extending the Bauhaus project into the present day as a meaningful model for architectural education and digital craft.
