Abstract:
2012/2013

Abstract:
The heart is the first organ that develops in the fetus, particularly in the very early stages of pregnancy. Compared to the adult heart, the physiology and anatomy of the fetal heart exhibit some significant differences. These differences originate from the fact that the fetal cardiovascular circulation is different from the adult circulation. Fetal well-being evaluation may be accomplished by monitoring cardiac activity through fetal electrocardiography (fECG). Invasive fECG (acquired through scalp electrodes) is the gold standard but its invasiveness limits its clinical applicability. Instead, clinical use of non-invasive fECG (acquired through abdominal electrodes) has so far been limited by its poor signal quality. Non-invasive fECG is extracted from the abdominal recording and is corrupted by different kind of noise, among which maternal ECG is the main interference. The Segmented-Beat Modulation Method (SBMM) was recently proposed by myself as a new template-based filtering procedure able to provide a clean ECG estimation from a noisy recording by preserving physiological ECG variability of the original signal. The former feature is achieved thanks to a segmentation procedure applied to each cardiac beat in order to identify the QRS and TUP segments, followed by a modulation/demodulation process (involving stretching and compression) of the TUP segments to adaptively adjust each estimated cardiac beat to the original beat morphology and duration. SBMM was first applied to adult ECG applications, in order to demonstrate its robustness to noise, and then to fECG applications. Particularly significant are the results relative to the non-invasive applications, where SBMM provided fECG signals characterized by a signal-to-noise ratio comparable to that characterizing invasive fECG. Thus, SBMM may contribute to the spread of this noninvasive fECG technique in the clinical practice.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to devise and develop an intelligent system for analyzing heart sound signals, able to support physicians in the diagnosis of heart diseases in newborns. Many studies have been conducted in recent years to automatically differentiate normal heart sounds from heart sounds with pathological murmurs using audio signal processing in newborns. Serious cardia pathology may exist without symp- toms. Since heart murmurs are the first signs of heart disease, we screen newborns for normal (innocent) and pathological murmurs. This thesis presents a variety of techniques in time-frequency domain such as Cepstrum, Shannon energy, Bispe trum, and Wigner Bispe trum for feature extraction. A comparison of these techniques is considered to feature selection which has been used to reduce the size of the feature vector. In the final step, different lassi ers and techniques, e.g., Multi layer perc eptron (MLP), decision tree, Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and ensemble of decision trees, are applied on data in order to a hieve highest performan e. High classifi cation accuracy, sensitivity, and specifity have been obtained on the given data by CART. The validation process has been performed on a balanced dataset of 116 heart sound signals taken from healthy and unhealthy medical cases.

Abstract:
This research project employs a cross-scale approach to examine experiences concerning participatory budgets in two districts of Rome promulgated through regional policy. The experiences are examined in terms of both urban policy and processes of mobilisation of civil society and socio-territorial practices that form part of the fabric of daily life. The project, which draws upon theories belonging to urban political geography, is in fact closer to the debate initiated in France, and more recently in Italy, in the domain of social geography as regards the interdisciplinary methods used, the relative importance of field work, and the role of the researcher. The field of enquiry focuses on the impact of active participation by citizens in the coproduction of urban policy. In this study, the notion of coproduction refers equally to processes involving the construction of meaning that results from the exchange of views and representations, and to changes in use and expectations concerning spaces and local policy that arise following experiences of direct citizen participation in public decision-making. The enquiry deliberately encompasses an intra-urban scale on both thematic and methodological grounds: however, analysis of the experience led to numerous changes of scale, accommodating investigation of forms of spontaneous aggregation within quarters of the town, which displayed a strong interaction with the conduct of the processes in question, but also of more wide-ranging policies displaying either significant synergy or conflict with the experiences in question. The research, which was conducted by a multidisciplinary team, concentrated in particular on analysis of the modes of interaction between the various levels of knowledge and power mobilised within the two experiences. Our initial hypothesis concerns the position of the researcher. A key trait of social geography is the need to view a desire for change in favour of socio-spatial equity as a natural consequence of research. This desire may take the form of critical input, or in the long term, professional training. However, in accordance with shifts in the general framework, with increasing competition between research and the private sector, and with the urgent need for a radical change in the prevailing models for the town (in the case of Rome), we postulate the hypothesis that the research-participatory action method may constitute a mode of interaction between science and society that is of particular relevance for the themes concerning urban co-production. Regarding themes, we suggest that it is vital to develop a model (variable, adaptable and readily usable) of interaction between the various actors, their needs and their expertise, in order to ensure a democratic and sustainable urban project, in contrast with both the model based on predominantly political negotiation and the outmoded and elitist technocratic model. The proposed research-action model ranged in the field from territorial diffusion to multi-actor strategies of consultation and evaluation of citizens' proposals, with a gradual increase in consideration of the core issues of participatory democracy: from the creation of the "representative microcosm" of interests involved to guarantees of transparency and of an equal say for citizens, from the circulation of the various levels of expertise implicated in the joint decision-making process through to accompaniment towards stable forms of participation. The conclusions emerging from this study point towards a critical examination of these experiences. The creation of a technically acceptable process of coproduction of knowledge and of urban projects allows questions to be interjected into the debate as well as the assumption of local responsibility for territorial policy, although the role of local institutions continues to be uncertain and ambiguous. However, these experiences reaffirm the capacity of Roman citizens for self-organisation and the importance of territorial planning processes as a potential means of resistance to chaotic, heteronomous and highly speculative models of urban development

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study on the late 16th century manuals of ornamentation by Girolamo Dalla Casa, Giovanni Bassano, Riccardo Rognoni, and Giovanni Battista Bovicelli. The study demonstrates that the latest Renaissance manual should be given more credit for the innovative ornamentation style that was to come in the Early Baroque era. Bovicelli's use of sequence, dissonances, and less moving notes for more rhythmic varieties are features most often associated in the style of the Baroque. Unfortunately, the topic of ornamentation in the late Renaissance is most commonly discussed as a group of different entities writing in the same style. The research for this paper is intended to separate the manuals of the late Renaissance, focusing on the separate styles that led to the work of Giovanni Battista Bovicelli.

Noorbhai, Mohammed Habib. "The batting backlift technique in cricket." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/24908.

Full text
Abstract:
The batting technique in cricket consists of various elements such as the grip, stance, backlift, downswing, impact with the ball and follow through. Whilst there has been an extensive amount of research into these batting elements, there is little research specifically on the backlift technique. Therefore, we aimed to investigate and provide a scientific understanding of the batting backlift technique (BBT) in cricket. We aimed to investigate the BBT of the most successful batsmen (n = 65) in the last 120 years as well as players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) (n = 30). It was found that these batsmen did not conform to the current cricket coaching method that advocates a straight batting backlift technique (SBBT). Instead, 77% of successful batsmen and 90% of IPL batsmen employed a lateral batting backlift technique (LBBT) in which they lifted their bats in the direction of second slip or beyond with the bat face towards the off-side. Using this technique, both the toe of the bat and face of the bat points directly towards the off-side (usually between slips and point). The number of players using the LBBT was significantly greater than those using the SBBT (χ2 = 19.2, df = 1, p < 0.001). Given these findings, we were curious to determine whether this finding was similar at other levels of cricket. The second study therefore employed biomechanical and video analyses to evaluate the BBT of current semi-professional, professional and international cricketers (n = 155) from South Africa and the United Kingdom. The backlift of these batsmen was then compared to their career statistics. It was found that a LBBT is more prevalent at the highest levels of the professional game and a likely contributor factor for successful batting at the highest level (p≤0.05). The LBBT was also found to positively affect other components of the batting technique such as the stance and scoring areas. We then proceeded to investigate the BBT amongst the lower levels of cricket (junior and adolescent cricketers). The third study consists of an intervention study that employed a biomechanical analysis of coached and uncoached cricketers (n = 80). It was found that more than 70% of uncoached cricketers adopted a LBBT, whereas more than 70% of coached cricketers adopted the SBBT. Having found that the LBBT is a likely contributing factor for past and current successful batsmen, it was then important to understand what BBT the current cricket coaches are teaching at various proficiency levels. The fourth study explored the teachings of the BBT among international cricket coaches (n = 161) using a mixed methods approach through an online evaluation survey. This study was able to show that a majority of cricket coaches teach what is advocated in coaching manuals and mostly coach the SBBT as opposed to the LBBT at various levels of the game. In the fifth and sixth studies, this thesis further describes two innovative coaching tools that can improve and assist with the coaching of the LBBT. Firstly, a novel coaching cricket bat was investigated through a pilot and intervention study. In the pilot group, cricketers using the coaching bat scored approximately 1 more run per ball or an average of approximately three more runs in total when using the coaching bat than the normal bat (F = 6.70, df = 1, p = 0.012). In the intervention study, the experimental group scored double the total number of runs (an additional 16 runs) and an average of approximately 3 more runs per player in the post-match than in the pre-match, which showed a large effect (ES = 5.41) (t = 3.32, df = 5, p = 0.021). The coaching cricket bat might be used to coach young cricket players to hit the ball more effectively as well as how to adopt a more LBBT. Secondly, a mobile application was developed, which can be used by players, coaches and scientists to analyse and improve the BBT among cricketers at all levels. In summary, this thesis has shown that the LBBT is a likely contributing factor to successful batsmanship at all levels of cricket ability (junior cricketers, adolescent cricketers, semi-professional cricketers, professional cricketers, international cricketers and former elite/successful cricketers). Coaching a LBBT to young batsman may be challenging and therefore a coaching cricket bat has been developed and has shown to be a promising training aid for coaching the LBBT to young cricketers. A mobile application has also been designed and tested to assist in the coaching of the BBT in cricket. A way forward for further research in this area of cricket batting is documented at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:
In recent years researchers have argued that in order to fully understand perceptual cognitive expertise in sports, representative tasks must be used to preserve the tightly coupled links between perception and action that experts exploit. Previously, tasks have been considered as representative or not, with little evidence existing to indicate the degree to which a task is representative enough. This thesis primarily aimed to investigate experimentally representative tasks in cricket batting and the degree to which a laboratory-based task of cricket batting was able to represent batters’ emergent perceptuo-motor behaviour for perceiving bowlers’ delivery length. A secondary aim was to re-evaluate perceptuo-motor behaviours thought to contribute to skilled performance and their development. In chapter 2 skilled batsmen’s foot movements were recorded in response to balls bowled to a range of lengths under in situ and video-based laboratory conditions. Kinematic analyses quantified decision-making skill and movement scaling. Analyses revealed the laboratory condition to have a high degree of fidelity. Skilled batter’s Foot movements were reliably replicated and differences were found compared to a novice group. In chapter 3, response mode, occlusion condition and skill level were compared on the representative laboratory test developed in chapter 2. Analyses identified that skilled performance was only aided by maintaining coupled responses under occluded conditions, whilst no differences were observed under un-occluded conditions. Skilled performers were also shown to possess greater anticipation skills compared with novices under both coupled and un-coupled conditions. In Chapter 4, the effects of manipulating information present in situ, through simulated ball flight, and fully simulated training aids were compared in a novel experimental paradigm. Skilled batsmen faced deliveries across a range of lengths from a bowler (in situ), from a bowling machine (simulated ball flight) and from a ProBatter simulator (fully simulated action and ball flight). Results showed that simulated ball flight condition resulted in foot movements that were closer to in situ than the fully simulated condition, suggesting that if present, the link between bowling action and ball flight needs to be tightly coupled. These results demonstrate for the first time that representative tasks must not be considered unilaterally as representative or not, but instead the degree of representativeness should be quantified and evaluated against the expert behaviour under investigation. Determination of the degree of representativeness would allow researchers to apply findings to the performance environment with greater knowledge of their potential impact.

Abstract:

This essay considers the works of l. B. Alberti, written in latin and in "volgare". First, it looks at irony following the way of the "intertextualite". Moreover, the irony calls in question the omniscient certitudes of universal speechs (metaphysical speech and speech of the reason). Lastly, the irony, considered as dialogue, underlines the necessary and difficult confrontation of learnings, but it can also assume the dubious status, between dissimulation and cynicism, of a free speech that eludes social and political sanctions

Lauri, Laura. "L'affaire Cesare Battisti : enjeux politiques et littéraires." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BOR30006.

Abstract:
Cesare Battisti’s name is indeed that of a famous hero of the Great War, but it also evokes, traumatically, the crimes imputed by the Italian judiciary to the provocative and inflexible activist born in 1954 near Latina, in the Latium, who was given a life sentence in absentia, after a trial which was contested as based on charges presented by a single ‘penitent’. There is no doubt that Cesare Battisti was only a minor figure during the Years of Lead. In France, his exceptional ‘case’ was widely mythicized. Nevertheless, Battisti is still vilified. He thus makes for an enlightening transverse study, allowing us to leave behind the invectives and move on to much needed, dispassionate research, as documented and objective as possible, into that painful era and its aftermath. The origins of this puzzling, complex, and contested individual, highly perceptive and capable of numerous metamorphoses, together with his background, allow us to understand better his drift towards violent, extremist left-wing groupuscules. A mechanism is then set in motion, leading to a ‘case’ which seems endless, in its judicial complexities in Italy, but even more so in France where the sentences of the courts are interwoven with a vast media compaign, and later on in Brazil, still today. The inflexibility of the protagonist is a major factor in this situation. It entails a torrent of articles, statements, and very committed monographs from intellectuals, reverberated in the media and subsequently in the political sphere. Why this intensive media coverage, with all its twists, when the other refugees benefitting in France from the ‘doctrine Mitterrand’ can remain largely anonymous? Certainly because of Battisti’s main tactics— becoming a writer, and therefore an intellectual, thus sacred and unimpeachable in France— which also allows him to keep up his political fight, indirectly, between the lines. His crime novels, which are carefully crafted, and fed by his adventures and observations as an exile, reach far beyond the supposed limits of the genre, and raise questions that can capture our contemporaries’ interest. The defendant becomes an accuser. He highlights the many dead ends of the modern age. Thus he reshapes his image, through fiction, by means of omission and division. Analyzing Cesare Battisti’s life in its successive stages teaches us a lot about the cogs and wheels of a historical crisis, and about what still troubles our society

Andrews, Mark Warren. "Irrational architecture in Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s Carceri d’Invenzione." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17719.

Abstract:
Since the series of etchings known as the Carceri d’Invenzione created by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1788) there has been extensive debate as to their meanings. Taking advantage of drawing and the print medium, Piranesi manipulated perspective to create dislocated and irrational architecture that challenges the viewer and creates a deep sense of unease. This thesis analyses the compositional issues the Carceri provoke and explores the ambiguous relationship they forge between architecture and pictoriality. Piranesi was creating a rupture within the conventions of architectural representation; the Carceri serve as a denunciation of contemporary architectural practices he perceived as stagnant. The prints are projections that raise questions about the very nature of architectural representation that are still relevant to modern practices. Chapter 1 is a Literature Review that includes various theories and interpretations of the Carceri from the eighteenth-century to the present time. Chapter 2 examines the architectural theories and ideas being developed during the eighteenth-century and the intellectual context for the prints. Chapter 3 is a close analysis of the prints, paying attention to the instances of illogical spaces created, with a particular focus on those prints that contain examples of discontinuous space and distorted perspectives that have not been identified or discussed in detail in the previous literature. Chapter 4 examines the way Piranesi uses the temporal to explore architectural representation; the importance of history and the past to his work; and how printmaking and etching in particular enable Piranesi to encompass two critical elements, enlightenment rationality in the form of engineering, architectural analysis and description, and the expressive powers of the imagination.

Macneil, Georgina Sybella. "Giovannino Battista: the boy Baptist in quattrocento Italian art." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10299.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the imagery of the young John the Baptist in Renaissance art. The phenomenon of John’s juvenescence has been noted but insufficiently explored by previous scholarship. The present study reassesses the figure of the youthful Baptist by means of rigorous theological exegesis of biblical, apocryphal and late medieval textual sources and a thorough investigation of the visual corpus. Beginning with the mosaics of the Florentine Baptistery, a handful of narrative cycles locate the onset of John’s prophetic career in the desert at an ever-earlier point in his life. However, it was not until the mid-fifteenth century that the boy John was released from the confines of his own narrative to become an independent figure in devotional imagery. Innovative altarpieces by Filippo Lippi commissioned by the Medici family in the late 1450s and 60s are shown to be crucial in promoting and disseminating this new vision of Florence’s beloved patron saint. The thesis demonstrates the enormous popularity of the youthful Baptist in the following decades, first in Florence and subsequently elsewhere in Italy, and interrogates the significance of his presence as infant, boy and adolescent across a wide range of pictorial and sculptural representations. One of the most famous examples of the child John, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Virgin of the Rocks”, is recontextualised within this existing pictorial current, to show that this masterpiece is at once more traditional and more innovative in its treatment of subject matter than has hitherto been recognised. Key narrative moments, such as a meeting between Christ and John, and new ways of visualising the intimate bond between the two children formulated towards the end of the fifteenth century, including physical embraces and shared exposure of vulnerable infant flesh, are also investigated. Through such investigations, the thesis aims to advance understanding of the multiple and intersecting roles played by the boy Baptist in Renaissance art and devotion.

This research has a dyadic approach involving both patients with cardiovascular disease and their partner during the hospitalization. The first study investigates the effect of dyadic coping (DC) on partners’ marital satisfaction considering the moderating effect of the partners’ psychological distress. The results show that the beneficial effect of positive and common DC on marital satisfaction occurs when the partners’ psychological distress is low, on the contrary negative DC decreases marital satisfaction among those who have high levels of psychological distress. The second study aims to investigate the relationship between DC, adherence to medications and patient activation. The relationship is mediated by the patient health self-efficacy: positive and common DC increase patient health self-efficacy which in turn increases adherence to medication and patient activation; on the contrary, the negative DC is detrimental during hospitalization and also over time after discharge. The third study investigates the relationship between psychological distress and the quality of partner support (overprotection, hostility and support for patient engagement) through the moderating role of DC. The results show that high psychological distress increases worse partner support among those with low levels of positive DC and high negative DC.

Abstract:

Abstract: Eugenio Battisti's Antirinascimento was first published in 1962 during a period in which Italian culture, while still coping with some restraints due to remnants of fascism, battled through political and cultural expansion. The book goes through studies in popular culture, scientific illustrations, iconography of witches, archeology of fables, composing a diverse mosaic of fifteen century's cultural fabric. This doctoral thesis analyzes its three main perspectives: the author's biography; the conceptual lexicon of the term which entitles his work; and the historical context of the encompassed period. Battisti was born in Turin in 1924 (and died in Rome in 1989) thus witnessing the Second World War and, as a young man during the postwar period, militating in his hometown's resistance movements. During this period he got involved mainly with theatrical productions, showing early signs of interest in cultural matters. His thoughts' progress is structured in a critical path whose leitmotiv can be identified as a very unique concern, inciting a constant review of the status quo, an ongoing skepticism that organized his critical thinking in dialectical structures exemplified by the opposition between comedy and tragedy, renaissance and baroque, classic and anti-classic, but, especially, inciting a constant renewal and questioning of these classifications. In this thesis, the term "antirinascimento" is encompassed beyond analogies with the term "mannerism", with renaissance's or classic aulic's crisis. It is understood, above all, as a vanguardist rethoric category. Battisti was part of the Italian cultural scene related to Lionello Venturi's school, which had a difficult conflict with Roberto Longhi's school. He took part in fundamental shifts in historiography in a time tremendously influenced by German schools, narrowing the boundaries separating roles of historians and art critics. Therefore, Antirinascimento is discussed here as a reviewing proposal of the romantic and still prevailing notion of Renaissance as a period that, once surpassed "medieval darkness", reached reason's ultimate triumph. In opposition to the traditional interpretation of Renaissance as a turning point in history, Battisti investigates medieval features in Renaissance culture, artistic creativity as free assimilation and emulation of subsequent cultures. It is a historiographical proposal whose modus operandi is a utopian methodological skepticism free from conclusive results. Battisti was suspicious towards every theoretical premise. For him, there are no scientific assumptions, and knowledge should be balanced in mobile foundations, it should be updated and dread motionless. The prior intention of this thesis is to introduce this art historian and Antirinascimento into Brazilian academics. It may well be a fruitful reception to his legacy in Brazil's recent and active production in art history, known for its interdisciplinarity, revisory approach in current research, otherness as defining structure of cultural identity, all of which are highly esteemed to Eugenio Battisti

Abstract:
Inspired in tuscan airs, inflamed by ancient sources and girded by Roman ruins, Leon Battista Alberti composes, in latin letters, a modern doctrine of beauty sowed upon the treatises on the Arts. In that, beauty glares in pulchritudo and ornamentum: the former, proportional harmony of the parts within a body that does not accepts additions or subtractions or alterations, is inherent quality; the latter, adherent to the figure, is auxiliary light and fair complement. Evoking the rhetoric of Cicero and Quintilian, and invoking comely, organic, metaphors, the albertian precepts, by fusing the notions of decorum and aptum and accommodating aesthethical principles and ethical motivations, surpasses the separation between structure and ornament, attenuating the idea of a beauty only emerged from proportional relation, ending modern oppositions between ornatus and utilitas.

Anderson, Bruce. "The effects of the Thunderstick batting device on hitting efficiency." Scholarly Commons, 1987. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/503.

Abstract:
Throughout the decades, both professional and amateur athletes has been trying to enhance their performance with regard to hitting a baseball. Even through the methods for attaining this goal have changed many times since the early beginnings of the sport, there remain differing opinions as to the best method of acquiring a high level of hitting efficiency. For the purpose of this study, hitting efficiency will be defined as the degree of solid contact made by the performer when attempting to hit a baseball. It was the intention of Coach Al Endriss (1986) to invent a hitting aid that would not only increase the amount of solid contact by his players, but also produce less strikeouts and consequently, more productive hitting. Endriss' philosophy is that the more solid contact the hitter can achieve, the greater chance there is of reaching base safely. These concepts sparked the beginning of the Thunderstick, which is now produced from sizes for the little leaguer to the intercollegiate athlete who seek to sharpen their visual-motor skills. The Thunderstick is recognized as registered trademark of the Easton Aluminum Company. For a comparative diagram of the Thunderstick and a regulation aluminum bat, refer to Appendix A. The Thunderstick is a specially designed batting device that possesses unique and revolutionary characteristics that separate it from a regulation aluminum bat. A review of the literature on batting practice techniques revealed several different methods by which an individual can increase his hitting skills through a variety of practice drills such as the batting tee drill, soft-toss drill, screen-toss drill, and live hitting off a pitching machine. The practice drill that was chosen for this study, to be used in combination with the Thunderstick, was the batting tee drill. A need to gain more knowledge of the specific ways that athletes of all ages may improve their hitting skills through practice techniques would appear to facilitate the question posed as to how using the Thunderstick affects hitting efficiency. If it can be proven as a valid and reliable means of increasing solid contact, the Thunderstick would prove helpful to the entire population of participating baseball players.

Abstract:
My thesis is a critical edition of the Poema tartaro by the libertine abbot Giovan Battista Casti (1724-1803). This work is a long octave poem, which satirizes, in accordance with the rules of the mock-heroic genre, Catherine II’s Russian court, where the author lived for years (1776-1779) as a member of the Hapsburg diplomacy. Although Casti was the Austrian court’s official poet, his work never received the authorization to be printed: the emperor Joseph II, after his 1781 alliance with Russia, forbade in fact the publication of a poem whose theme was explicitly against his new ally. Still, Casti’s text circulated widely in form of both manuscript copies and unauthorised (as well as defective) printed ones. A thorough analysis of these materials led to main findings: the version of the poem that Casti realized for the emperor in 1786, including 84 new stanzas, missing in the nineteenth-century pirate printed editions of the poem. Along with the critical edition of the text, my thesis provides a broad commentary on the poem. The commentary is essential in order to illustrate the different perspectives from which the text can be approached. Sure enough, one of the components peculiar to the Poema Tartaro is the continuous overlap of elements that draw on different historical moments: even if the main scenery of the plot is the thirteenth-century Mongolian Empire, ruled by Genghis Khan, there are in fact several references to the nineteenth-century Russia of Catherine II. This strategy aims to present Russia allegorically as a country of perennial savagery. Depicting Petersburg as if it were the lost city of Karakorum and the czarina Catherine as a despotic and “oriental” sovereign, Casti contrasts the French Illuminists’ vision (in particular Voltaire’s) of nineteenth-century Russia as a model for the European Enlightenment. The thesis is completed by an index of the different historical transvestisms used by Casti to assign to every character in Catherine’s court a counterpart in the Mongolian scenery. Furthermore, the index is conceived as a tool to analyse the correlated controversies that inform the whole poem.

Tavernor, Robert William. "Concinnitas in the architectural theory and practice of Leon Battista Alberti." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1985. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/239042.

Full text
Abstract:
In his treatise on architecture, de re aedificatoria, Leon Battista Alberti (1404 - 72) described Beauty in architecture as concinnitas: a harmony or congruity of the various parts of a building assembled according to principles :summarised by three categories of numerus, finitio and collocatio . This term has been interpreted variously and most famously in recent times by Rudolph Wittkower. Starting with his and other scholars' interpretations, this dissertation proposes a new definition for concinnitas based on studies of Alberti's architectural theory and practice and the work of his contemporaries. Chapters 1, 3 and 4 of the dissertation focus on the application of numerus and finitio in Alberti's architectural practice and observations made here are supported by separate historical studies of the buildings (be found in the appendices) and survey drawings (bound together at the end of the dissertation). Chapter two is a study of the symbolic references, traditions and themes which appear to underlie the design of centralised churches and points raised here are expanded in later chapters. The third category, collocatio, is examined in the final chapters when the continuity of tradition in Alberti's approach to architecture is outlined within the framework of the city and the urban ensemble of church, palace, piazza and loggia.

This thesis studies the context, the genesis and the process of the writing of de familia by leon battista alberti (1404-1472). It is composed of two volumes respectively entitled "context, genesis and writing of a dialogue" and "tradition and text". The first volume tackles in its introduction the problem of the different forms of alberti's writing (treatise, dialogue, ludus) and of their epistemological significance; it studies next the ancient models, the forms, the methods and the humanist context (chapter i and ii), then chronology, typology, conception and composition of alberti's italian dialogues (chapter iii), as well as the progression of dialogue, the fonction of characters and the production of the truth in de familia (chapter iv). The volume ends with an appendix dedicated to "family, woman and love" which studies, in the whole of his work, the perceptions and ideas of alberti on these subjects in the light of ecclesiastical conceptions and practices of the merchant milieu of the time. The second volume contains a critical edition of the four books of de familia. It is precedeed by a substantial introduction which retraces in a new manner the genesis of the work and the modalities of its circulation and which reconstructs for the first time the connection between the known manuscripts in a rational way. Three distinct stemmata corresponding to the three sections, under which the book was effectively circulated, are proposed

Abstract:
This paper investigates the construction of discursive topic and its introduction, expansion, rupture and closure procedures in oral arguments before the Federal Supreme Court (FSC), based on partial transcription of the extradition trial session (Ext 1085) and warrant security (MS 27875) on the Cesare Battisti case, which occurred on June 8, 2011. The part of the transcription of the trial session chosen takes into account the concentration of oral arguments of private lawyers, public lawyer, representative of the Union and the representative of the Public Prosecutor before the Federal Supreme Court and thus it allows the study of the discursive topic front of the institutions that they represent their speakers. The choice of the corpus was made by national and international impact of the event that happened between Brazil and Italy, with regard to their diplomatic relations. President Lula, on his last day of his mandate in his ultimate decision as President of the Republic refused the extradition of Cesare Battisti to Italy. This presidential and sovereign decision of Brazil led to the judgment of the act before the Federal Supreme Court in Brazil, under the request of Italy, which judged the permanence of Battisti in Brazil. The methodology used at this study was empirical and inductive based on functionalist view of Halliday (2004), Marcuschi (2006) and Galembeck (1999), qualitative character. By studying the oral arguments focused on interactions, highlighting this perspective, presents a vast universe of possibilities of analysis, since speech basically permeates all human activities. In this sense, the speech-in-interaction opens space for different interdisciplinary studies, being able to be explored in many other scenarios. The inclusion of the study of oral arguments and their interactions in Conversation Analysis field lends originality to the work herein. It is hoped that in this way, it can give rise to more interdisciplinary research. Considering the language used by speakers in their oral arguments, it is clear that there must be shared knowledge for the interaction to be effective, especially with regard to the Federal Supreme Court context, taking into account many legal concepts used. Considering the final votes of Justices of the Federal Supreme Court, the judgment now analyzed: 5 out of 4 in behalf of Battisti, prior expectation of the judges was probably answered. It was also prepared a study on the functioning of the Federal Supreme Court on the oral arguments of the trial session. For further explanation of what happens in the highest court of the judiciary, the data was included in images, tables and diagrams.

Abstract:
The effects of fiber and constructional variables on the properties of hydroentangled nonwovens important to their performance when used as batting components in firefighter turnout systems are investigated. Para-aramid, meta-aramid and oxidized PAN constructions are characterized on the basis of thermal insulation, flexibility and durability performance. The contribution of batting properties to the thermal protective performance provided by multilayer turnout systems is examined for selected turnout lay ups. Optimized thermal liner systems are suggested based on layered constructions including the properties of the face cloth components.

Abstract:
Batting is known to be one of the most complex motions in sports. Successful hitting may be influenced by many factors, one of which is response time (RT). Response time is known to be altered by various training techniques such as isokinetic and isometric weight training. Eighteen, right-handed female college softball players were measured for RT with three methods, experimental in design, using an Automatic Performance Analyzer. In addition, hitting performance was determined through film analysis of bat velocity while swinging at a ball delivered from a pitching machine. A Locam camera was used for the cinematography techniques. From this initial testing, three equivalent groups were formed. One group served as a control, while the other two groups performed two contrasting seven week isotonic training programs: 1) a rapid dynamic (RD) group performed many, quick light weight activities; while, 2) the slow exercises. The rapid dynamic group had their exercises triggered by an auditory stimulus. Following the seven week training program, RT and batting performance were again determined. Pre- and post-training response times were analyzed using an analysis of variance and covariance with p=0.05.The results of the RT post-test analysis indicated that response times were not significantly decreased for any of the tests. Film analysis was inadequate to make any conclusive judgments on bat velocity. The following conclusion is warranted from the results: isotonic weight training did not significantly decrease response time for either the slow dynamic or rapid dynamic group.
