Full textQuaternary glacial-interglacial cycles are recorded in various climatic archives from high to low latitudes. The EPICA Dome C ice core provides a high-resolution record over the last 800 ka of δ18Oatm (i.e. δ18O of atmospheric O2) which combines past variations of the low latitude water cycle and of the biosphere productivity. In absence of annual layer counting, this proxy can be used for orbital dating in association with the June 21st insolation at 65°N to build an ice core chronology. However a lag of 6 ka between the δ18Oatm and the insolation, classically observed during glacial-interglacial terminations, is applied to the entire record during the chronology construction. This lag and the complexity of the δ18Oatm signal are the main reasons why the ice core chronology presents a high 6 ka uncertainty which limits their interpretation, jointly with other paleoclimate archives, in terms of past climate and environmental variations. To solve this issue I have developed a new ice core chronology based on the relation between the δ18Oatm and the δ18Ocalcite of east-asian speleothems, using new isotope measurements allowing for the first time a complete record over the last 800 ka at Dome C. This new chronology reduces the uncertainties compared to the actual ice core chronology strongly based on δ18Oatm and shows a better sequence of events between the high and low latitudes records. Then, I have developed a model to reproduce the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 to address the lack of quantitative interpretations of this proxy and to check our assumption of synchronicity with the δ18Ocalcite over several climatic cycles. To reproduce the variations of the δ18Oatm, it was necessary to couple the intermediate complexity climate model iLOVECLIM and the vegetation model CARAIB. Finally, the δ18Oatm variations simulated with the new coupled model over several thousand years are in phase with the insolation of the Northern hemisphere (except during Heinrich events) and with low latitudes δ18Ocalcite variations. This can be explained by changes in the low latitude water cycle related to changes in the isotopic composition of meteoric water used by the terrestrial biosphere during photosynthesis

Full textBackyard poultry farming involving for example traditional family flocks and hobby poultry flocks is an important sector of the French poultry production. Today, it is estimated that they represent 2.5 million owners, and they are suspected of transmitting pathogens to commercial poultry farms (and/or humans). In this study, we investigated the role of backyard poultry flocks in the circulation and transmission of pathogens to commercial poultry farms. In order to better characterize the stakeholders in the backyard poultry sector, a national participatory survey was conducted to analyze owners' practices and identify different sub-populations. Simultaneously, the prevalence of 14 pathogens of interest in human and/or animal health and predominantly presenting a respiratory tropism were studied. The identification of pathogens as markers of infection and transmission was carried out by comparing their prevalence levels in the familial and commercial poultry sectors. In the familial poultry sector, five sub-populations were identified: urban poultry, traditional poultry, student poultry, "pet" family poultry, and hobby poultry. Pathogens such as Mycoplasma synoviae and Avibacterium paragallinarum are highly prevalent in French family poultry flocks but are rarely identified in commercial farms. Consequently, they could be considered as relevant markers of transmission from backyard to commercial flocks. In general, the results indicate the limited role of backyard poultry flocks in the contamination of commercial poultry farms. On the contrary, human links existing between backyard and commercial premises were identified as a risk factor for backyard flocks in an epizootic avian influenza context. These results lead us to consider the reverse hypothesis of a possible pathogens transmission from commercial to backyard poultry flocks during epidemics

Full textWe show the salinity effect on sea surface Mg/Ca temperature (TMg/Ca) reconstructions from core-tops located in tropical oceans. We develop a correction procedure to derive un-biaised SST and delta18Osw from TMg/Ca and delta18O of foraminiferal calcite. We apply this correction procedure to study the Indian monsoon variability during the Holocene solar insolation changes (last ~ 10 ka). The surface hydrographic reconstructions are based on coupled delta18O-Mg/Ca measurements performed on the planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (G. Ruber). We reconstruct the evolution of hydrographic gradients (East/West and North/South) over the Holocene. We also study the seasonal atmospheric circulation variability by analysing changes in the intensity of three local monsoon-driven upwellings recorded in marine sediment cores from the northern tropical Indian Ocean. These upwellings respond to summer and winter monsoon forcings. Our results suggest that these upwellings react to different forcings. We interpret the upwelling dynamics as a response to the progressive reduction of northern hemisphere solar insolation or a shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) summer position, or atmospheric temperature of the southern hemisphere. The study of millennial hydrographic variability in the south-east of the Red Sea shows more saline events evenly spaced which seem occur with a ~ 1000 yr periodicity

Full textWater level evaluations given by conventional weather stations a ten day basis, indicate a wide spectrum of annual variability in climatic nuances. Close relation between calculated water schedules and flows of drainage basins appear. The space-time study of average daily flows enables (in terms of frequencies) a classification of drainage basins and shows the prevailing effects of weather conditions and lithology on outflows. The frequency of extreme flows highest and lowest water levels permits in the same way a classification of drainage basins in terms of risks. As far as water quality is concerned, the need of a struggle against nitrates has become one of the main targets in Brittany, as in many European countries : in order to preserve drinkable water (and socio-economic activities directly tied to water, as shore-line activities, for example) "cross-checked" diagrams may be considered as an efficient descriptive method to study those aspects. Hydrologic dryness is a severe restraint for some economic activities. As a census of consecutive dry-day sequencies, hence an attempt of stochastic modelling in order to define a probable length of the sequence and the further development of persistence
