Abstract:
AbstractThis article addresses from a feminist perspective the importance that exhibitions have had in the task of writing, consolidating and naturalizing the history of art in the Basque Country in the years 1950-1975. Based on a review that begins in the 1970s, the text studies the most common trends in presenting this artistic past through exhibitions and, therefore, how this is related to the systematic invisibility that artists who produced work in this period have suffered since then. Finally, it is questioned whether, over the years, feminist demands have had the desired impact on the way this historical-artistic legacy is exhibited or whether, on the contrary, there is still work to be done.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This article familiarises us with the life and artistic work of the Pamplona-born enamellist Félix Artieda (1900-1974). Trained in the tradition of a workshop which constructed, gilded and polychromed altarpieces, he studied in Pamplona with Javier Ciga and then at San Fernando in Madrid. He learnt the art of enamelling under Dr Victoriano Juaristi and at the Massana School in Barcelona. Most of his production is from the 1930s, when he worked, above all, using the champlevé technique. The themes of most of his works are religious, imitating medieval motifs, and from Basque folklore. Together with the above, a catalogue of twenty works in enamel by the artist, most of them previously unseen, is also presented. Keywords: enamel; artist; Navarre; 20th century.

Abstract:
The use of artisan-produced lamb rennet pastes, but not any of the other commercial animal rennets, imparts a characteristic flavour to the cheese, so most Mediterranean ewes' milk cheeses are coagulated with this kind of rennet paste. In contrast to the advantages of using lamb or kid rennet pastes from the sensory point of view, questions are still raised as to their hygienic quality. The goal was to examine the microbiological and enzymic quality of lamb rennet pastes prepared by cheese manufacturers for their own use, and evaluate the hygienic quality of raw sheeps' milk cheeses made with them, using Idiazabal cheese as a model. Lamb rennet pastes prepared by artisan cheese makers from the Basque region of Spain (27), and Italy (8) were evaluated. For cheese making experiments 5 different lamb rennet pastes were selected among the 27 samples from the Basque Country region of Spain. Microbiological analyses were carried out on samples from rennet pastes, rennet extracts, milks and cheeses during ripening. Enzymic activities studied in rennet paste were: total coagulating strength and lipase. Analysis of variance and Student's t-tests was performed. The results show that the artisan-produced rennet pastes contain high levels of a variety of microorganisms. After 60 ripening days, which is the minimum ripening period required for Idiazabal cheese prior to its commercialization, no Eschericia coli, Clostridium, Salmonella spp. or Listeria monocytogenes were detected, and levels for the rest of the microorganisms were below the limits of the European legislative standards for cheese manufactured with raw milk. We can conclude that the use of artisan-produced lamb rennet pastes of questionable hygienic quality for the manufacture of raw milk hard cheeses yields products of good hygienic quality.

Abstract:
This series of images forms part of the ongoing project Soft Ground, Hard Light, which speculates on a multiscalar spatial ontology of photography emanating from the Arditurri silver mine complex in the Basque Country. Evoking the mountainous massif around Arditurri where silver ore and galena have been extracted since Roman presence in the area, the depicted topographies are, in fact, data transcriptions from atomic force microscopy (AFM) probing the analogue film stock of an early 1930s experiment in 3D cinema, Cine en Relieve, by the Basque cinematographer Teófilo Mingueza. In contrast to optical or electron microscopy, AFM uses a scanning probe to physically touch the specimen, recording its surface undulations at the atomic scale of a nanometre, or a billionth of a metre. As a haptic operation based on direct contact between instrument and sample, between apparatus and referent, AFM is literally a contact print, a ‘blind’ scan that senses not the visual content of the recorded image but ‘feels’ its underlying material substrate of silver nanoparticles within the 35 mm film emulsion. The resulting image assemblies visualize a topography resulting from the intra-action between the silver nanoparticles and the scanning probe as much as its transcription through the particular parameters afforded by the AFM analysis software. Hard Light, Soft Ground was initiated during an artist’s residency at Tabakalera Centre for Contemporary Culture, Donostia-San Sebastián, and is currently in production as part of the wider research project Esper Syndrome: Archaeotopologies of the Image at the Royal College of Art, funded by the AHRC through the London Arts & Humanities Partnership. Abstract:
This research is based on the work of the Basque contemporary artist Mikel Diez Alaba and his series called Mínimos, which gathers up to 144 small size pieces made out of acrylic paint applied on printed images. This collection was displayed on the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao during 2014. The main objective of this paper is to reach a more integral conception of conservation –based on the latest theories regarding heritage-, focusing on material aspects and the conceptual characteristics of the artwork, alike. Thereby, the working method in Mínimos series has been analyzed, as well as the presence of elements linked to the natural heritage. All this, taken together allows the establishment of new strategies towards the conservation of contemporary artworks.

Durandegui, Angel B. "The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum in the Basque nationalist press : discursive and rhetorical analysis." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2007. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10697.

Abstract:
This study analysed the reporting of the debate over the Guggenheim Bilbao in the Basque nationalist newspapers Egin and Diario Vasco. I was looking at differences/similarities between the newspapers, and at how argumentation changed over time (1997/1998), drawing upon content analysis, discourse analysis of the ideological themes in the reporting and an indepth analysis of two editorials, one in Spanish and one in Basque. The content analysis confirmed that economy and Basque culture/identity were highly controversial themes; and that in 1998 the museum became more accepted. An analysis of rhetorical strategies e.g. quantification rhetoric for economic predictions; vagueness/evasiveness to portray the Basques' reception of modem architecture/art, permitted the examination of intragroup/intergroup models of interaction, strategies and underlying ideological dilemmas (Billig et ai, 1988). After the inauguration, Diario Vasco claimed that the museum was concerned with Basque modem art, while Egin maintained a cautious distance. The in-depth comparative analysis of political rhetoric in two Egin's editorials, reporting similar events in Basque or Spanish, confirmed that the use of these different languages involves different construction of the readership; and different strategies to convey communality between writer/reader. In the Basque language editorial, communality was cautiously constructed until an assertive we Basques stressed search of unity, differentiation, and sovereignty: conflict/differences between Basques were omitted, backgrounded or ironized, while differences with the Spanish foregrounded. In the Spanish editorial, an impersonal third person tone avoided using the rhetoric of we. Specific Basques were blamed for the repression of Basque secessionism. A dramatic tone suggested subtle criticism against ETA, yet implying that it was reasonable to include ETA among the human victims. The explicit nation state's deixis in the Spanish editorial implied Spain was the nation state. In the Basque context the nation state's deixis was ambiguous: we Basques might be used to address Basques beyond French-Spanish boundaries, suggesting a long-term representation/project that imagined Basqueness beyond its present-day administrative division or actual political influence. The implications of such fine detail differences were discussed.

Shabodien, Zareena. "Appraisal of Beyoncé Knowles as a popular artist: Analysing the evaluative discourse of the online fan base." University of the Western Cape, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/5388.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
This research uses the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, more specifically, the appraisal theory to analyse the online message postings by fans of the popular music artist, Beyoncé Knowles. Through their online writings, insight into their evaluative discourses is gained. This research focuses on the emotional, judgemental and evaluative stance in their writings, especially; the linguistic choices that the online fans use in order to convey their attitudes: appreciation and judgement and affect towards Knowles. In order to do such an analysis, the study considers the different Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) levels of meaning (interpersonal, textual and experiential metafunctions). Several questions become pertinent: What kinds of interpersonal relations and identities are implicated on the message boards? (Interpersonal metafunction). How are these expressed textually? (Textual metafunction). What kinds of experiences/fields are implicated in the messages? (Experiential metafunction). The research concludes that in terms of identity, fans tend to latch onto a Hip-Hop culture in order to create and maintain a connection to Knowles. Fans display this linguistically by writing certain words out phonetically as they would be pronounced orally. Gender boundaries are transgressed irrespective of the fans' gender. Posts also demonstrate colourful expressive responses in relation to Knowles. Whether the fan is male or female, both feel comfortable in using emotive language to demonstrate the impact which she has on their lives. In terms of appreciation fans tend to express that she has inspired and changed their lives. Attitudes explored demonstrated that a number of Knowles' fans hold positive viewpoints and therefore they would align themselves positively towards her. The element of judgement was explored from different perspectives in relation to Knowles. One, being a website which suggested that Knowles had undergone an evil transformation. For evidence, these fans used her lyrics, gestures and images selectively as a way to "prove" their arguments. As a contribution to knowledge, this research is useful in the sense that when individuals log online and leave their posts on message boards, they do not always realise the impact of the message that they leave behind. Using SFL and the appraisal theory, one is able to establish the attitudes: judgements, appreciation and affect individuals hold towards a particular topic or person (in this case towards Knowles). Through linguistically analysing message boards, one is able to connect individuals to possible identity options. In essence, the letters and words which individuals have strung together create a greater picture than what was possibly intended. Linguistically, it opens more avenues for exploration.

This thesis investigates, from a rhetoric-contrastive perspective, the uses and functions of rhetoric mitigation metadiscursive marks (here hedging devices) in research articles produced by Brazilian and German authors and understood as specialized texts (HOFFMANN, 1998), inserted in the expert-expert communicative context (PEARSON, 1998). To achieve this goal, the present study aims at answering the following questions: (a) how often are hedging strategies employed in the introduction and conclusion sections? (b) what is the relationship between the number of hedges in each subcorpus and the rhetorical characteristics of each analyzed section? (c) how often do the lexico-grammatical items performing the role of hedges appear in each subcorpus? The starting point for the investigation was the assumption that texts belonging to the same genre but written in different languages present striking rhetorical distinctions. Such differences in academic writing can be described by the use of hedges as discourse-pragmatic elements which characterize the "modus dicendi" of a given knowledge area; in the present case, Medicine. A corpus of 120 research articles from national and international medical journals was built, including texts written in German and Portuguese; the articles were collected from the CAPES periodics website. This corpus consists of 60 Medicine articles written in Portuguese and 60 articles written in German, divided into two subcorpora, namely, Corpus 1: Medicine-German and Corpus 2 : Medicine-Portuguese. The former is made of two subcorpora, (i) German Medicine Introduction (MAI) and (ii) German Medicine Discussion (MAD); the latter is also subdivided into two parts, (i) Portuguese Medicine Introduction (MPI) and (ii) Portuguese Medicine Discussion (MPD). The data were analyzed and processed in accordance with the Corpus Linguistics methodological principles, in an instrumental application of its methods. The data were treated with the help of a linguistic analysis software called WordSmith Tools (SCOTT, 1997), version 3.0, especially the Wordlist and Concord tools. In order to investigate and analyze the uses and functions of the hedges, from the Interactional Metadiscourse (HYLAND, 2005) and Intercultural Rhetoric (CONNOR, 2008) perspectives, given the corpora collected, we have proposed a classification model, in accordance with the taxonomies proposed by Hyland (2005), Cabrera (2004) and Martín-Martín (2008). The results of the analysis have pointed to the occurrence of a largest number of hedges, in both languages, in the discussion section of the articles, followed by the introduction section. Both present a high number of occurrences of indetermination devices (epistemic expressions, such as modal verbs, lexical verbs, semi-auxiliary verbs, and modal adjectives / adverbs) and disagentivization (impersonal expressions, passive voice). We can therefore conclude that the authors of the Medicine research articles, both those in Portuguese and in German, employ the same amount of hedges in order to achieve the communicative purposes of the research paper genre, given the position the authors occupy in the academic community and the interpersonal relationship they wish to establish with the audience. This research contributes to minimize the gap in the studies on hedging under a contrastive perspective, based on corpora of scholarly texts in Portuguese and German in the Medicine area.

This work investigates the process of automatic indexing by attribution in the representation of documents within the context of scientific database construction in the area of Information Science, aiming to associate keywords to the knowledge recorded in scientific papers. This work‟s research problem is the analysis of the process and the resulting quality in the representation of the subject through automatic indexing by attribution of scientific papers in the area of Information Science. It appraises documentary language and type of automatic indexing used in scientific databases. Investigates the use of the Brazilian Thesaurus of Information Science (TBCI) along with the Semi-Automatic Indexing System (SISA) in automatic indexing by attribution of scientific publications in the area of Information Science. Its methodology is exploratory research, based on the revision of Brazilian Information Science literature on automatic indexing by attribution and a case study through an experiment. Utilizes the corpus made up of 60 scientific papers referenced in Souza‟s doctorate thesis to compare the keywords used in those papers with the terms attributed by SISA using the TBCI controlled vocabulary. In the pragmatic stage of this research, automatic indexing by attribution of the 60-paper corpus was used, as well as intrinsic qualitative analysis and evaluation, through consistency indices, and extrinsic quantitative evaluation, through precision, recall and F-measure indices of the terms proposed for indexing. Evaluation of the consistency indices, adopting the relaxed consistency criteria, showed an average of 15% in the consistency indices, with a variation going from a minimum of 0% to a maximum of 42%. As to recall, precision and F-measure indices analyzed in this experiment, the following results were obtained: average precision of 20%; average recall of 42%; and average F-measure of 25%. The research results allow us to conclude the importance of the use of controlled vocabulary in an automatic indexing by attribution system since the thesaurus has a strong influence in the results of automatic indexing. It is also possible to assert that in this type of indexing by the SISA system, the habilitation of the general terms archive has a strong influence in the quality indices, which were analyzed through the average values obtained by quality indicators as consistency indices. It was also evidenced that the use of keywords as indexing terms needs to be further studied and researched in order to create tools that provide the authors of scientific papers with a better conceptual definition of these terms and better terminology control.

This work consists in a thesis and is intended to contribute to the educational system and the theoretical and practical advancement that interfaces between the two concepts, with support from the “dialogue” category. The researcher makes use of authors specialized in areas such as law and education to present reflections on the dialogical approach among them. Supported by the methodology of content analysis proposed by Bardin (2011), based on bibliographic research, seeks to demonstrate that progress toward better relations in school is more promising when it takes the path of dialogue. Thereby, adopts Freire’s theory as the theoretical reference of the study. The thesis is entitled “Analysis of Brazilian articles on indiscipline, violence and offenses at school: SciELO base 1998-2014”, because it identifies the actual reality inside the schools and the scholar community, that is exposed daily in the media. The question that is proposing to investigate is: what are the literature contributions that address the relationship between offense and indiscipline in schools, highlighting the mediation of the dialogue category? The aim of the research is to indicate literature contributions to address the relationship between offense and indiscipline in schools, by mediating the dialogue category. To do so, it was necessary to focus on the concepts of indiscipline, offenses and dialogues in school; highlighting, based on some of Freire’s works, concepts that contribute to the dialogic approach of the conflicts in schools; analyzing papers published in Brazilian journals of reference about the relationship established between indiscipline and offenses.

The research aims to study and analyse the contributions and challenges present in the articles on the subject of Youth and Education in Brazil from 2010 to 2014. Furthermore, it looks forward to identify new ideas or paths for pedagogical practices or emancipatory policies for young people. We have as theoretical references the contributions of Albert et al (2008), Freire (1992, 2000, 2005.2010), Abramo (1997), Margulis and Urresti (1996.1998), Carrano (2005), Sposito (2009, 2003), Dayrell and Carrano (2014), Dayrell (2007), Castells (1999) Groppo (2011, 2015), Parents (1990), Gimeno Sacristán (2013). For this purpose, we made use of a literature search in Scielo from the following descriptors: students and high school; students and youth and adult education; youth and youth curriculum; youth, education and young school. We found and studied 38 articles. And from the content analysis method (Bardin, 2004), it has been possible to list 7 categories, as following: curriculum, teaching, subject practices, teacher training and research, social and educational policies, youth; work and education and educational social participation. As result, we have found elements that contribute to education of young students, which are: 1) the school must take ownership and understand the different media and new technologies in order to use them in favor of learning; 2) understanding the context of the classroom content and the use of multimedia as a way to make it the most significant and attractive in the education of young people; 3) to start from the knowledge of the students and to make use of dialogue; 4) to enhance intergenerational relationships in order to young people and adults feel part of the educational process; 5) to make the teacher training closer to the current context and the new youth demands; 6) school integration with its surroundings and its educational agents; 7) understaing the need of young people to gain more knowledge and job training to continue into higher education; 8) development of policies that consider young people as political subjects and those who have their careers marked by social inequalities; 9) to provide adequate infrastructure to enhance learning, with construction of laboratories and libraries; or to support the of such spaces if the school already has them; 10) the development of a political-pedagogical project that prioritizes permanence and success of students, considering the specifics of shifts, such as at night (historically undervalued).

This dissertation aims to discuss collaborative models of social indexing, as well as necessary adjustments, advantages and disadvantages to deployment in the Referential Database of Journal Articles in Information Science (BRAPCI), with the aim of improving the quality of representation and hence retrieval of documents in that context. It specifically aims to: discuss, through a comprehensive review of the Brazilian literature on folksonomy, what has been studied by researchers of Information Science in Brazil on this theme; synthesize the theoretical foundations of collaborative models of indexing; identify and describe the collaborative models of indexing proposed in the literature of this area of knowledge; differentiate and analyze collaborative models of social indexing identified; describe and analyze the indexing policy of the BRAPCI; propose adjustments to each of the collaborative models indexing aiming their deployment in the BRAPCI; point out advantages and disadvantages of adopting each of collaborative models of social indexing adapted in the research. It uses as methodology an exploratory research guided by the bibliographic research and content analysis for research of scientific production and systematic review of the Brazilian literature of Information Science on Folksonomy; also conducts a case study for the description and analysis of the BRAPCI indexing policy and for proposition of adjustments to collaborative indexing models for this database. As results of the research, it analyzes and discusses the indexing policy of the BRAPCI and three collaborative indexing models (iterative representation model, collaborative model of indexing Facetlog and collaborative model based on categorized tags) as well as the necessary adjustments, advantages and disadvantages regarding their deployment in the BRAPCI. It points out that with the application of collaborative models of social indexing adapted the following negative implications of the indexing policy of the BRAPCI are minimized: the occurrence of typos in the descriptors; the information representation without the interference of the indexer; limited participation of the authors in indexing of the own work; the lack of review of existing terms in the subject field of metadata in the database; and the participation of the indexer only in the activity of categorization of terms and definition of cross reference between terms. It concludes by emphasizing that the proposed adjustments of each of collaborative models of social indexing applied under the BRAPCI or similar databases can improve the quality of representation and retrieval of scientific production. Identifies the need for development and implementation of a terminological control instrument in the database, based on literary, structural and usage guarantees in order to minimize in the tagging the use of terms with polysemy, homograph descriptors, asymmetric tags and tags with morphological variations.

Abstract:
The mapping of scientific activity is essential for the development of research and policy definition. Abstract:
Three themes are developed in this exegesis. Firstly, it discusses the conceptual base that informs the creative outcomes of this research. This centres on homo-sexuality, disease, illness and the deliberate masquerades that are often under-taken by HIV-positive Australian homosexual males as a response to socialised stigma. Through these masquerades, they enhance the physicality of their bodies so as to conform to Western cultural perceptions of masculine and healthy body ideals and thus avoid stigma that would otherwise be placed on them. This exploration draws upon theories from sociology to discuss these physical enhancements with an emphasis on the period since the onset of HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s. Secondly, it explores the works of visual artists that comment on the HIV/AIDS pandemic prior to the mid 1990s when no effective long-term treatments were available. Thirdly, it investigates HIV/AIDS-based art produced since the mid 1990s, after long-term treatments became available, and discusses how this work contrasts with the earlier works. Also discussed are the parallels and differences between the body of work that is supported by this exegesis and these other contemporary artworks that address HIV/AIDS issues.

Abstract:
Abstract This brief essay explores how arts-based creative tourism contributes to positive attitudes towards rural and natural areas, both by participating creative tourists and artists as well as by the local community. It shows the necessity of a sense of place, an awareness, a consciousness of the valorization of art as a creative force to break the negative downward spiral of negligence, outmigration, isolation, and dependency of small rural communities in rural and natural areas.

Abstract:
Takes up secondhand clothes, the trade in which picked up between the wars as individuals who had formerly purchased new attire saw their earnings drop. Both middlebrow and modernist fiction suggests that secondhand clothing can distribute aspects of the original owner's persona, but only modernist work depicts such distribution as imprinting successive owners with an alien personality. I argue that this difference maps onto attitudes toward the artist, with writers who base characters on modern artists equating secondhand clothes with secondhand style.

Kangaroo characteristics: Forelimb small; has five digits with strong claws. Large, powerful hind limb with long, strong, narrow foot. Muscular thigh; muscle mass of lower leg positioned on upper half, toward knee. In foot, large fourth and smaller fifth digits transmit force during locomotion; first digit missing, small digits two and three bound together by skin. Long tail, thick at base, used for body support at rest and balance during hopping. Fast locomotion is by leaping with hind limbs only. Walking: Hind limbs, forelimbs, and tail in contact with ground at various times. Sitting: Body rests on entire foot and tail; arms hang loosely. Pouch in female opens forward, supported by two long, thin bones. Sea lion characteristics: Webbed flipper-like forefoot and hind foot. Front flipper thicker on front edge. Skin of flipper extends past tips of toe bones, supported by individual cartilages attached to ends of toe bones. Noticeable claws on three middle toes of hind foot; other claws tiny and inconspicuous. Front flipper triangular; hind flipper rectangular. Hind limb can be advanced forward—can walk, but thigh and lower leg encased in skin of abdomen (seals can’t walk—their hind limbs permanently extended backward). Elbow also enclosed in body skin, but forearms are free. Body streamlined (torpedo-shaped) for swimming. Thick insulating blubber layer between skin and muscles. Thick, flexible, muscular neck. Pelvis and femur small. Sternum has forward projection. Small external ears present (absent in seals). Ears and slit-like nostrils can be closed under water. Short, stubby tail. Very short hair; fur much darker when wet. Body uniform in color (no spots). Males larger than females. Closely related to terrestrial carnivores. Abstract:
This chapter seeks to briefly survey the perspectives of the Athenian, Western, and Eastern philosophers on arts and aesthetics. In a broad sense, approaches to arts seek to explain ‘what art is’ and ‘what art does’. It is a bare fact that artist(e)s as managers have a more intimate understanding of aesthetics in comparison to professional managers of arts organizations. Indeed, professional managers who do not understand the aesthetic significance of art forms will not be in a position to assess, present and project their organizations in a convincing manner to the outside world. Further, knowledge of aesthetics helps managers gauge the larger impact of their activities on artist(e)s as well as consumers. The chapter underscores the importance of managers of arts organizations adopting the idea of wholesomeness in their approach to arts. The chapter also highlights the importance of arts organizations adopting branding efforts to project their organizations. It is argued that by creating space for artist/artiste freedom and proactively engaging with connoisseurs and other opinion creators, it is possible for arts organizations to enhance their customer base. The chapter concludes by stating that managers need to play a major role in determining how far their organization’s offerings are in tune with the cultural and arts policies laid down by the State.

Abstract:
Around 1530 artists began painting on stone. Early on artists mostly used slate, though toward the end of the sixteenth century they began painting on various kinds of semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli. Such pictures were appreciated for how the pure lithic material was augmented by the painter. In the seventeenth century, artists (especially in Florence) began painting on a particular kind of sedimentary stone known as pietra d’Arno that subverts this aesthetic. Unlike semi-precious stones whose material splendor and purity lends itself to aesthetic appreciation, this stone is unrelentingly base: pietra d’Arno is essentially solidified mud. This essay investigates how artists used this sedimentary substrate to support ethical investigations of humankind’s position as fallen beings in the created world.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how Thomas Mann created a novel role for the artist: fully engaged with the political events of the day through a variety of twentieth-century media and yet fiercely protective of an independent stance. The 1930s was a decade in which governments of various stripes throughout the world discovered the value of employing artists to drum up support within a populist base. And Mann was a patriotic resident of the United States who throughout the war years carefully refrained from criticizing his adoptive country. But his voice and his aims were always unmistakably his own, and he agitated for the United States because he equated the American cause with that of liberal democracy, not because of any government commission. The chapter further explains that Mann's relocation to California can serve as a symbolic marker of this transition. Indeed, it was during his residency in Pacific Palisades as well that he reached the apogee of his trajectory as an anti-Nazi celebrity in the eyes of the American public.

Abstract:
Focusing on contemporary Iberia, this chapter examines the shifts that occur between a literary work and its film and stage versions in order to delve into the presence of heterolingualism in adapted artistic products. The case study for this investigation is the 2003 Basque novel Soinujolearen semea [The Accordionist’s Son] by Bernardo Atxaga and its Spanish collaborative (self-)translation, its Basque and Spanish adaptations for stage, and the feature film in Basque. The chapter analyzes the way in which multilingualism has been reflected both in the Spanish translation and in the dramatized reinterpretations of the story, as it needs to be adjusted to the language(s) of each medium. The aim is therefore twofold: on the one hand, to investigate the extent to which adaptations between modalities shift the way language is used to narrate a story; and on the other, to study the Basque author’s role when intervening in intersemiotic processes.

Abstract:
This paper is based on a body of research and photographs titled Shelter. Acting as a form of recovery and monument to its legacy, it focuses on a former Second World War RAF bomber station: a place where memory, trauma, and loss are all embedded. They address Britain’s postwar distain for the air campaigns and what Sebald described as Germany’s “individual and collective amnesia” in refusing to confront the resulting catastrophe of the shattered cities. “Horrors” and silence, which, he claimed, cast a shadow over his life. In The Rings of Saturn, Sebald wrote about the image of bomber squadrons embarking on their nightly missions over Europe. These raids set out from bases situated across the East of England. Most stations were temporary and after the war were reclaimed by farming, landowners, and nature. Sebald lived in Norfolk, once home to over fifty Second World War bomber stations, and he would often walk around one such base imagining the horror the airmen were about to encounter and inflict. In 2014, I made a series of photographs on one of these decommissioned stations depicting a series of woodpiles and corrugated metal structures (built to store wood and repel rain) that I encountered as I walked the overgrown perimeter track of the former Second World War RAF base at Hethel, Norfolk—a base situated just seven miles from Sebald’s former home in Poringland, Norwich. Built from the enveloping coppiced woodland and sitting amongst the last vestiges of dilapidated military buildings, perimeter tracks, and barbed wire, these woodpiles allude to a form of shelter reminiscent of the aircraft hangers, bomb shelters, and accommodation huts originally found on the camp. They also reference the forest camps described by Primo Levi, and, intriguingly, mirror Sebald’s vision of Cologne and other bombed-out cities across Europe at the end of hostilities.

Abstract:
The most important aim of the "Back to the Sense of the City" International Conference is to draw attention to the city and the sense of its being, the fact that a city seen as a heterogeneous entity is not only a work of its direct creators: architects, engineers, civil servants and municipal services, but all who "fill" it, primarily its inhabitants. A particular role is attributed to artists. It is the artists’ duty not only to shape it but also creatively criticize and contemplate. Artistic actions understood as the city’s activity and activity in relation to the city have certain qualities of utopian events, manifesting in the unattainability of a goal, idealistic activity base, transience of events and the type of references to it /to the city/. The paper focuses on such interpretative approach to these actions. The meaning of this notion is usually interpreted as a place that does not exist, "... from the Greek outopos (gr. ou - no, topos - a place, non-place, place that does not exist, non-existent) and the eutopia (good place) ". Our statement, built on an idea of an internal dialogue, a dialogue between the main text and the footnotes and quotations, focuses on the changing of the ways of thinking about the city as a work of active art, on the role of an artist, architect, town-planner in this process and their activities seen as special intellectual contribution to the development of this kind of space. It is also a kind of provocation relating to the description of similarities of the artistic and architectural activities in the context of the space of a city.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The author aims to outline some aspects of the New Orleans and Chicago Jazz styles, to show the importance of the ethnic, geographical, and legal factors in the emergence of New Orleans Jazz in the early 1900s and its later derivation into the Chicago Style in the 1920s. There are examined the beneficial predecessor factors of these styles — the evolution of street brass band orchestras (marching bands), the spirituals, the blues and ragtime and their stylistic features, collective improvisation, the call-and-response principle, that have been the base for the development of jazz music in general. In this context, mention is made of the role of the double bass in the examined period of classical jazz.

Abstract:
Th e study ”Th e repertoire of the performer Nina Ermurachi in the Folclor orchestra: dominant categories and aesthetic trends” addresses some methodological and epistemological aspects of the theme, designed as a preliminary stage of a wider research on the contribution of the professional folk orchestra “Folclor” in the work of cultural patrimonialization on the platform of neo-traditional art from the late Soviet period (1960-1980). Th e focus is on elucidating the heuristic relevance of some seminal notions from cultural studies theory. Th e author tries to argue the complexity, multiplicity and plurivalence of aspects related to aesthetics, ideology, social base, semantic universe, expressive and typological structures in the repertoire and vocal art of the soloist Nina Ermurachi. Full-time employee of the orchestra for over 37 years, the artist got the most out of around 180 songs in neo-traditional style, a solid and important musical heritage in the form of audiovisual recordings, included in the fund of IPNA Company “Teleradio-Moldova”. Starting from Cliff ord Geertz’s suggestions, two strategic typological categories are delimited in the artist’s repertoire, which symbolize the hegemonic force of two great directions or layers in the patrimonialization process: 1) creations grouped around the idea of national ethos and 2) creations centered on the “new, socialist vision”.

Abstract:
Introduction to Case-making and Systems Change in Arts & Cultural Education is an overview of a collaborative project between Creative Generation and ElevateArtsEd undertaken to better understand how practitioners - such as artists, educators, community leaders, and more - can make the case for and also advocate through arts and culture to drive systemic change and address complex challenges. The project seeks to expand the knowledge base of case-making and systems change in the field of arts and cultural education and provide resources to support effective actions for practitioners and young creatives. Investigating both the theory and the practice of case-making, the introductory article draws on research from three distinct sectors: cultural, education, and social justice. The approach represents both the science of advocacy-- building blocks for understanding what effective advocacy looks like-- and the art of advocacy with calls for improvisation, adaptability, and generative thinking, all characteristics of art making. The article describes six key learning themes and an expanded model for advocacy focused on self, field, and sector through an overarching lens of social justice.
