Abstract:
We proposed and implemented an automatic basketball detection and tracking system for broadcast basketball video recorded with a single pan-tilt-zoom camera, using knowledge of player tracking information. The task is challenging because the basketball is blurred due to the camera and the ball's fast movements, and broadcast video compression; also the motion pattern of the basketball is complicated and the ball is hard to distinguish from the cluttered background region. We incorporated three independent detection approaches to detect the basketball and tracked the basketball using the Kalman Filter, and then we analyzed the tracklets and selected the passing / shooting tracklets and inferred the player possession information. We tested the system using 830 frames in broadcast basketball video, and our system demonstrated the ability to track some passing / shooting actions and then infer the player who controls the ball. The system is a first attempt to extend the intelligent basketball tracking system to include basketball tracking and player possession inference. Our proposed methodologies can be extended to other intelligent sports analysis systems, even when the ball movement in the sport is not constrained in two dimensional space.

Abstract:
Relevance of the topic. Lithuania is not a large country and sports talents are not emerging very often. It does not depend on the social or economic situation of the country (Schnabel et al., 1994; Cedaro, 2000; Carling et al., 2009). When giving the opportunity for the talent to achieve positive results in sports, the talented personalities have to be selected, the purposeful training program has to be concluded as well as the monitoring of the practical implementation of the program has to be performed (Regnier et al., 1993; Durand-Bush, Salmela, 2001; Abernethy, 2008; Vaeyens et al., 2008; Bailey et al., 2010; Burgess, Naughton, 2010; Philips et al., 2010; Ford et al., 2011). Therefore it is very important that the training of the athletes has to be conceptualized, so a small quantity of the talented athletes is developed as optimally as possible. Inaccurate training system prevents the athletes from revealing their own potential. Thus, only the consistent sports training system shall stimulate a more rapid improvement of the sports results, as it is harder to identify a talent than to develop it (Balyi, Hamilton, 1999; Raslanas, 2001; Malina et al., 2004; Balyi, Williams, 2009; Stafford, 2010). It was considered for a long time that success in sports depends solely on the athletes, who are physically strong and developed tactically (Krasilshchikov, 2011), however, due to increase of the competition between athletes (De Bosscher et al., 2006) and major political and... Temos aktualumas.

Abstract:
Two separate field studies were conducted to examine the predictions of the multidimensional anxiety theory with both elite able-bodied basketball players and elite wheelchair basketball players. A secondary purpose of this study was to examine the influence of functional classification on cognitive and somatic anxiety and self-confidence in wheelchair athletes. In experiment one, twelve collegiate basketball players completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-II) prior to each of nine league games and in experiment two, thirty-one elite wheel chair basketball players completed the CSAI-II prior to each of three tournament games. Results were analyzed in both field studies using the intraindividual procedures recommended by Sonstroem and Bernado (1982) and separate polynomial trend analyses were used to test the predictions of multidimensional anxiety theory. Results did not provide statistical support for multidimensional anxiety theory in that there were no reliable trends between cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, self-confidence and basketball performance in both field studies. In experiment two, results indicated that no significant differences in cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence occurred as a function of wheelchair classification.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an experimental teaching method, Sport Aerobics, on the basketball skill acquisition of fifth grade students. This study investigated the differences in the shooting, dribbling, and passing scores of students taught with Sport Aerobics instruction compared to those taught with a traditional method, Practice Style. Sport Aerobics is an instructional method based on a theoretical framework developed by the researcher to enhance skill acquisition. This framework leads to teaching strategies such as using immediate feedback and specific cueing; arranging for students to engage in object free movement; arranging lessons, according to the framework's concept of movement progression, into lessons staged according to skill and sub-skill complexity; and instructing based on whole group organization. Sport Aerobic instructional strategies were designed to facilitate process learning that is recognized as important in today's development learning approach for age related curriculums. In contrast, the traditional Practice Style uses product-oriented strategies. Four classrooms, consisting of seventy-nine fifth grade students from two physical education programs, at different locations, were randomly assigned to two treatments; Sport Aerobics and Practice Style for instruction over a 15 period curriculum. Using the American Alliance Physical Education Recreation & Dance tests, both groups were pretested and post-tested for skill achievement of shooting, dribbling, and passing. Pretest and posttest skill score samples were collected and evaluated. ANCOVAs were performed on the posttests adjusted for the pretests to determine whether or not there would be greater achievement of skills with the Sport Aerobics method. Results failed to establish significant scoring differences between the two methods. Based on the literature and study findings a recommendation is made that longer lesson units will assist in the investigation of the effectiveness of both the instructional model and the individual elements that facilitate skill acquisition.

Abstract:
This paper presents a bracketing method for all the 63 games in NCAA Division I Women's basketball tournament. Least squares models and logistic regression models for Round 1, Round 2 and Rounds 3-6 were developed, to predict winners of basketball games in each of those rounds for the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament. For the first round, three-point goals, free throws, blocks and seed were found to be significant; For the second round, field goals and average points were found to be significant; For the third and higher rounds, assists, steals and seed were found to be significant. A complete bracket was filled out in 2014 before any game was played. When the differences of the seasonal averages for both teams for all previously mentioned variables were considered for entry in the least squares models, the models had approximately a 76% chance of correctly predicting the winner of a basketball game.

Abstract:
A stratified random sample of 144 NBA basketball games was taken over a three-year period, between 2008 and 2011. Models were developed to predict point spread and to estimate the probability of a specific team winning based on various in-game statistics. Statistics significant in the model were field-goal shooting percentage, three-point shooting percentage, free-throw shooting percentage, offensive rebounds, assists, turnovers, and free-throws attempted. Models were verified using exact in-game statistics for a random sample of 50 NBA games taken during the 2011-2012 season with 88-94% accuracy. Three methods were used to estimate in-game statistics of future games so that the models could be used to predict a winner in games played by Team A and Team B. Models using these methods had accuracies of approximately 62%. Seasonal averages for these in-game statistics were used in the model developed to predict the winner of each game for the 2013-2016 NBA Championships.

While basketball has begun to rapidly evolve in recent years with the popularization of the three-point shot, the way we understand the game has lagged behind. Players are still forced into the characterization of the traditional five positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center, and metrics such as True Shooting Percentage and Expected Shot Quality are just beginning to become well-known. In this paper, we show how to apply Principal Component Analysis to better understand traits of current player positions and create relevant player features based on in-game spatial event data. We also apply unsupervised machine learning techniques in clustering to discover new player categorizations and apply neural networks to create improved models of effective field goal percentage and effective shot quality.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to explore the acquired knowledge of Brazilian coaches and college professors in relation to the teaching-training process of technique and tactics in the Brazilian basketball. The work tried to contextualize the contents of the methodological strategies used by coaches and college professors for the teaching-training of fundamentals as well as defensive and offensive systems in all different Brazilian basketball categories. The sample group was constituted of 11 basketball coaches and 11 university basketball professors of Brazilian universities. The elected coaches had to be considered as national reference and for the elected university professors, the criterion was their master and doctor degrees in the sports scientific field, and/or basketball experts with teaching experience in Brazilian universities. The measuring instrument was an interview based in an open questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively - through the analysis of the content; and quantitatively, by means of the frequency and percentage of similar answers. Results showed that, in regard to basketball teaching-training, in all stages of the process, considering the fundamentals of basketball and the offensive and defensive systems, there are convergences and divergences when it comes to teaching contents as well as methodological strategies, according to the interviewed participants¿ point of view. For instance, there are strong indications of conflicts between the teaching methods of the basketball foundations for beginners, when analytical methods are criticized, while the game method seems to be more appropriate, mainly to keep the children highly motivated. In the specialization stage, on the other hand, there was evidence that individual exercises may produce a more efficient adaptation to the motor technique, having greater acceptance among the interviewees. Regarding the defensive systems, it can be confirmed that the man-to-man defense is recommended in the initial stage, whereas in the specialization stage, the zone defense starts to be a strong tactical possibility. However, the predominance of the man-to-man defense is still observed. Regarding the offensive systems, it can be observed that in the initial stage, complex games should be avoided, privileging exercises based on game situations and individual conditions. Nevertheless, in the specialization stage, exercises should focus teamwork and more complex strategies. Based in the results of the study it is important to consider that basketball teaching must be conceived in a long term process whose contents and methods may vary according to athletes¿ fundamentals and tactics, with a model of initial stage for the Brazilian basketball that still needs further longitudinal studies. With reference to the specialization stage, it is mandatory that contents and training methods be planned in a long term basis, mainly after the age of 15, targeting national and international levels. Thus, it is possible to signal some pedagogical possibilities for the different phases from the two stages of the basketball learning process in Brazil, taking in consideration the contents and pedagogical strategies of the teaching-training process, in a long-term basis

Hobbs, Wade Steven. "Unpredictability in basketball: An exploration of the effects of ball movement entropy on performance in international women’s basketball." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/21511.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate coach-driven questions focused on developing performance intelligence by analysing team strategy and tactics, otherwise known as ‘collective behaviour’, in international women’s basketball. The current thesis is presented as individual chapters containing stand-alone studies which have been or will be submitted to peer-reviewed academic journals for publication. Following a general introduction in chapter 1, a review of literature is presented in the second chapter detailing all relevant research that had attempted to measure or analyse tactics and/or strategy in any team sport prior to the first study of the current thesis (August 2015). The findings of the literature review were used to direct the series of studies that follow in this thesis. This resulted in the eventual theme of the thesis, examining unpredictability in basketball and its effects on performance. Consequently, in chapter three we present a method for measuring spatial entropy across the basketball court. Having defined a spatial measure of unpredictability, chapter four established a spatial measure of performance. Chapter five presents an appropriate statistical method for comparing the previously established spatial measures of entropy and performance. In chapter six, we further refine these measures to compare the final five seconds of ball movement entropy to shooting efficiency. In the discussion chapter we review the findings of each study, discuss the new knowledge that has emerged from the thesis, outline their practical implications, discuss future directions for research on this topic, and finally, provide concluding remarks for the thesis.

Abstract:
Although social facilitation has been extensively studied over the last 50 years in various domains, it has largely been understudied in the context of team sports. A total of 8950 National Basketball Association (NBA) games were investigated to assess how a team’s skill level and experience interact with audience size to predict performance. More specifically, audience size was measured in two ways: as the number of people in attendance at each game and whether the game was locally televised (fewer television viewers) or nationally televised (more television viewers). Contrary to expectations, underdog teams performed significantly better with larger audiences, an effect not found for their favoured counterparts. Also contrary to expectations, teams less experienced than their opponents performed significantly better in nationally televised games than in locally televised games. This effect was not found for more experienced teams. Additionally, no teams experienced a decrease in performance. These results add important findings to the information regarding sports and social facilitation and provide insight into team selection for high stakes games. They also enhance the sporting literature base which is considerably lacking in its assessment of social facilitation effects.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between role ambiguity, role conflict, win-loss record at current position, career win-loss record, school enrollment, total years as a head coach, total years as an assistant coach, and number of sports coached and burnout in men's varsity and junior varsity head high school basketball coaches. The subjects were all male coaches (n=64) from twenty-four counties in southwestern Virginia. The multiple regression analyses indicated that role ambiguity and role conflict did not differentiate a higher level of burnout. The remaining demographic variables were not significant predictors of burnout. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were best explained by school enrollment. Personal accomplishment was best explained by total years as a head coach and number of sports coached.

As basketball filled with masculine, the basketball court become the place where male to prove masculinity. Therefore, basketball court has oppression with female and femininity. However, females are not completely out of basketball. This study focus on a female leisure basketball community, females regularly participate in basketball for leisure purpose in public basketball court and try to change masculine hegemony in basketball for long-term. This study use in-depth interview to explore the following questions: First, how these females in the leisure basketball community escape from social gender construction in order to join basketball life experiences? Second, what kind of gender experiences will these females face when they appear on the basketball court? Last but not least, how these females struggling and fighting masculine hegemony to show female agency in basketball? From the comprehensive analysis between the data that generated from the interview and gender, space and body theory, there are four findings in the study. First, these females who participate in basketball court embrace the sweat and the sun to escape from social gender construction. At the same time, they build up the identity of female basketball player. Second, When female appear to join the game, they usually receive contempt and trustless. Females are treated like “others” in basketball court. Third, these females practice masculinity and femininity to participate in basketball, and using strategy and agency to find more opportunities to play basketball. Lastly, these females weakened the masculine hegemony and show the female subjectivity in the basketball court by the participation of the female leisure basketball community.

Basketball analytics is an increasing trend in the past thirty decades. Advanced statistics models show better predictive and explanatory power than the traditional box score views. The purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity and efficiency of teams and players in the Taiwanese Super Basketball League (SBL) by using various basketball analytic models. The result shows that each analytic model can be used in analyzing SBL after appropriate modifications and adjustments for its coefficients or calculation methods. The average possessions per game in the 13th SBL were about 78, which is the foundation of most analytic models used in our study. The Win Shares model shows better explanatory power of wins. Moreover, it is relatively accurate in predicting individual awards in SBL. Besides, the Bell Curve method has the optimal accuracy in winning predictions. In conclusion, we can use those analytic models to measure the factors influencing productivity and efficiency of teams and players in SBL.

Role of the Experienced Basketball Coaches Abstract Sports coaches are thought to be those who always stand on the sideline, putting on a grim look with both hands folding on their arms, and never stop talking. They stamp and shout in such a loud voice that everyone on the sport field can hear them. Although coaches play such a crucial and irreplaceable role in a sport team, few people really care about what they have been doing and devoting themselves to their teams; instead, scoring and ranking of a sport team is what catches the spotlight most of the time. The research focuses on four experienced basketball coaches with different background. This is a study of how these coaches have been devoting themselves to the front line of the basketball field with their passion and belief. Based on interviews, on-spot observation and studies relevant to basketball field, the writer aims at the identity of the basketball coaches in a narrative way. How they grew up, the parental support, the first coaches, and the peers of their youth time, among others, are found to be the factors that brought these four interviewees into the basketball field. They have developed their career from athletes, basketball coaches, to experts in the field─(1) their perseverance and passion making possible a basketball coach; (2) sense of achievement paving the way to the coach career; (3) coaching to be their belief and mission; (4) facing the reality and solving problems equipping them with tough resistance against pressure. High School Basketball League (HBL) has drawn more attention because of their long-time devotion. How these coaches train their young players and what they insist is so admirable. Without doubt, they are the role models of the younger generation. 【Key Word】Experienced, identity, sports coach(es)

The purpose of this study was to analyse Kagoshima Rebnise Basketball Club by the perspective of Japanese Professional Basketball Leagues’ trine relationship management strategies. This research used documentary analysis and semi-structured interview. The date was gathered from related documents, media reports, and nine interviewers--in total. As for the results, surrounding organizations were actively supporting the club; but it was apparent that the club did not offer any benefit for them. Government hopes to encourage the development of sports tourism industry: regional development, increasement of tourist population, etc. However, the club has not cooperated with other organizations; therefore, it seems that they are not ideal for the sports tourism industry. The relationship with other organizations, quality of services; along with importance of selecting the right coaches and the attitude of surrounding organizations of the club, which tie factors and reasons for lack of identities between the club and fans surrounding organizations. In conclusion, due to the negative attitude of the club for the management, and the fact that the trinity operation suggested by the league, was not implemented, the fans could not identify with the club, which then lead to the current poor management condition.

Abstract:
With the increasing popularity and competition in professional basketball in the past decade, data driven decision has emerged as a big competitive edge. The advent of high frequency player tracking data from SportVU has enabled a rigorous analysis of player abilities and interactions that was not possible before. The tracking data records two-dimensional x-y coordinates of 10 players on the court as well as the x-y-z coordinates of the ball at a resolution of 25 frames per second, yielding over 1 billion space-time observations over the course of a full season. This dissertation offers a collection of spatio-temporal models and player evaluation metrics that provide insight into the player interactions and their performance, hence allowing the teams to make better decisions. Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In chapter 2, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node represents the network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-16 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. NBA teams value players who can ``stretch'' the floor, i.e. create space on the court by drawing their defender(s) closer to themselves. Clearly, this ability to attract defenders varies across players, and furthermore, this effect may also vary by the court location of the offensive player, and whether or not the player is the ball handler. For instance, a ball-handler near the basket attracts a defender more when compared to a non ball-handler at the 3 point line. This has a significant effect on the defensive assignment. This is particularly important because defensive assignment has become the cornerstone of all tracking data based player evaluation models. In chapter 3, we propose a new model to learn player and court location specific offensive attraction. We show that offensive players indeed have varying ability to attract the defender in different parts of the court. Using this metric, teams can evaluate players to construct a roster or lineup which maximizes spacing. We also improve upon the existing defensive matchup inference algorithm for SportVU data. While the ultimate goal of the offense is to shoot the ball, the strategy lies in creating good shot opportunities. Offensive play event detection has been a topic of research interest. Current research in this area have used a supervised learning approach to detect and classify such events. We took an unsupervised learning approach to detect these events. This has two inherent benefits: first, there is no need for pretagged data to learn identifying these events which is a lobor intensive and error prone task; second, an unsupervised approach allows us to detect events that has not been tagged yet i.e. novel events. We use a HMM based approach to detect these events at any point in the time during a possession by specifying the functional form of the prior distribution on the player movement data. We test our framework on detecting ball screen, post up, and drive. However, it can be easily extended to events like isolation or a new event that has certain distinct defensive matchup or player movement feature compared to a non event. This is the topic for chapter 4. Accurate estimation of the offensive and the defensive abilities of players in the NBA plays a crucial role in player selection and ranking. A typical approach to estimate players' defensive and offensive abilities is to learn the defensive assignment for each shot and then use a random effects model to estimate the offensive and defensive abilities for each player. The scalar estimate from the random effects model can then be used to rank player. In this approach, a shot has a binary outcome, either it is made or it is a miss. This approach is not able to take advantage of the “quality” of the shot trajectory. In chapter 5, we propose a new method for ranking players that infers the quality of a shot trajectory using a deep recurrent neural network, and then uses this quality measure in a random effects model to rank players taking defensive matchup into account. We show that the quality information significantly improves the player ranking. We also show that including the quality of shots increases the separation between the learned random effect coefficients, and thus, allows for a better differentiation of player abilities. Further, we show that we are able to infer changes in the player's ability on a game-by-game basis when using a trajectory based model. A shot based model does not have enough information to detect changes in player's ability on a game-by-game basis. A good defensive player prevents its opponent from making a shot, attempting a good shot, making an easy pass, or scoring events, eventually leading to wasted shot clock time. The salient feature here is that a good defender prevents events. Consequently, event driven metrics, such as box scores, cannot measure defensive abilities. Conventional wisdom in basketball is that ``pesky'' defenders continuously maintain a close distance to the ball handler. A closely guarded offensive player is less likely to take or make a shot, less likely to pass, and more likely to lose the ball. In chapter 6, we introduce Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER), a new statistic that measures the defensive effectiveness of a player. DER is the effective distance a defender maintains with the ball handler during an interaction where we control for the identity and wingspan of the the defender, the shot efficiency of the ball handler, and the zone on the court. DER allows us to quantify the quality of defensive interaction without being limited by the occurrence of discrete and infrequent events like shots and rebounds. We show that the ranking from this statistic naturally picks out defenders known to perform well in particular zones.

Inspired by the renowned comic book, Slam Dunk, from my childhood, I started to pursue the career of basketball, once dreaming that I would become a professional player one day or represent my country. I also once gave up my favorite basketball because playing basketball had not been as enjoyable and thus lost the purpose of my life. Finally I returned to the basketball court through serendipity, started to enjoy the fun of playing basketball, and joined High School Basketball League stage. However, I had to stop basketball due to severe injuries and returned again after the long journey of rehabilitation. Self-narrative method was utilized in this study to describe a Physical Education teacher who was accepted for a graduate program as a basketball-specialized student. With the meaning of personal basketball sport experience as focus, this study included stories of near 20 years of basketball career and coupled with the process of teacher examinations. The stories included four parts: The Eye of Dream-building—I, Who Built the Basketball Dream; The Eye of Dream Hard to Come True—I, Who Was in A Plight; They Eye of Nightmare—I, Who Did Not Want to Remember; The Eye of Dream Come True—I, Who Became A Teacher. The findings of this study: 1. The researcher encountered many unknown situations in the course of being a basketball athlete; however, with perseverance, the researcher took all the hardship and pain as challenges. The researcher used to take loosing games or not reaching the goals as failure and focus solely on the results with only winning in mind, attempting self-proof with grades. The researcher even thought about revenge when facing the same opponents and neglected the joy and energy obtained in the process. Finally the researcher learned to do the best without regret, not to give up easily, to focus, to give it all, and to hang on to the end, which helped the researcher tremendously to find the solutions when facing the teacher examination plight. 2. Recommendations for crossing the wall of teacher examination: (1). Learning by doing—do not be afraid of hardship and to accumulate diverse experiences. (2). Failure teaches success—learn to face failure, correct the drawbacks and look forward. (3). Opportunities are for those who are ready—accumulate energy all the time and be courageous to try when the opportunity comes. The worst is not to give your self a chance to try.

This research aimed to investigate the influence of different top of basketball shoes on landing stability. Five active young basketball team player (age:20.6 years) without previous ankle injuries volunteered for the research. Generall speaking, most people think that high-top shoes will support more protect on human ankle. The research utilize force platform to measure the center of pressure sway, Electromyography to measure the four parts muscle activation of lower limbs , high speed camera to record the subtalar Joint of ankle, Goniometer to measure the degree articulatio coxae and articulatio genus when landing. The path of the center of was measured in the balance tests, and the vertical ground reaction forces were recorded during the push-off and landing phases of the counter movement jump. Different top upper basketball shoes had significant different influence on ankle sprain. In the center of pressure has no significant difference in average distance sway. In contrast, low-top shoes increased the second peak vertical force value, which could be related to a greater risk of injury produced by the accumulation of repeated impacts in sports where jumps are frequently performed. This conclusion suggestests that middle-top basketball shoes provide more appropriate biomechanics on ankle part and more support on subtalar Joint of ankle.
