Miano, Daniele. Fortuna in Translation, Fortuna as Translation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786566.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the relationship between Fortuna and Tyche as one of translatability. The first half of the chapter focuses on Tyche, with the aim of determining semantic and structural elements common with Fortuna. The second part of the chapter looks at instances in which Fortuna is translated in Greek. The appearance of bronze strigils bearing the epithet soteira from Praeneste in the fourth century BC seems to presuppose this translation, and also points to the salvific meanings of Fortuna as a base for the process of translation. This process of translation had probably occurred through early contacts between Latium, Sicily, and Magna Graecia, where Tyche seems to be associated with salvation already from the fifth century BC. Other instances of translations of Fortuna and Tyche are studied across the Aegean.

Abstract:
Music scholars have long recognized the value of comparing settings of the same cantata texts by Bach and his German contemporaries. Examining the ways in which multiple musical minds chose to set the same words can throw the styles of each into sharp relief. This chapter presents a second pair of settings by Bach and Graupner that has received only occasional mention in the literature: Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust (BWV 170 and GWV 1147/11). The premieres of the two settings took place fifteen years apart; Graupner's setting was first heard on July 12, 1711, in Darmstadt, and Bach's on July 28, 1726, in Leipzig. The chapter discusses the two settings of each of Vergnügte Ruh's five movements in turn. In every case, it presents the text in three versions: (1) the original German, following the orthography and punctuation of Lehms' 1711 text; (2) the author's English, word-for-word translation; and (3) the author's English translation, which mimics the poetic structure and rhyme of Lehms' original.

Cicchetti, Dante. An Overview of Developmental Psychopathology. Edited by Philip David Zelazo. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199958474.013.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
Historical origins of the field are reviewed and the meaning of a developmental psychopathology perspective is described. Definitional principles and conceptual issues of the field are discussed, and these parameters include (1) the mutual interplay between normality and psychopathology; (2) a multiple-levels-of-analysis and multidisciplinary approach; (3) developmental pathways to psychopathology and resilient functioning; (4) translational research; and (5) prevention and intervention. Examples are derived from research conducted with individuals at high risk for developing psychopathology and those suffering from mental disorders. Future directions and challenges for translating research into practice and policy are proffered. Advances in the knowledge base in developmental psychopathology not only have benefitted the scientific understanding of the relation between normal and abnormal development, but also have contributed to reducing the individual and societal burden of mental illness.
