Abstract:

Abstract Microplastic in marine sediments is nowadays considered an environmental pollutant. Seaports are particularly susceptible to microplastic pollution through series of human activities occurring in these areas. In the Philippines, research on microplastics is still limited and there is still no study determining the occurrence of microplastics in the harbour of Manila Bay, Philippines. Hence, this work conducted a preliminary investigation of microplastics in the sediments of Baseco Port area, Manila Bay. Nine stations within the study region were sampled. The types of microplastics found are fragments, foam, fiber, film, pellet, and filament with an average size measurement of 1.6±1.4 mm. Results from this study suggest that anthropogenic impacts are most likely the dominant sources of accumulation and distribution of microplastics in the sediments of Baseco port. This study provides preliminary assessment of microplastics contamination in the area that may serve as important reference for further studies.

Abstract:

Objective: The project aims to develop a community kitchen manual for public health emergencies. Participants: The officers and members of the Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Kababaihan ng BASECO served as community respondents for this project. These eight women were in charge of the community kitchen operations, particularly the feeding program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Implementation: The whole project comes in three phases. The design stage was executed in phase one of this project. The phase one also focused on the development of manual content based on available literatures and considered the interviews conducted with respondents. Discussion: The manual contains guidelines on food safety and meal preparations. Based on the interview, the proponents identified specific contents that must be included in the guidelines, as compared with the need to improve current operations of the group’s community kitchen. Looking at the activities of the community, the proponents indicated the food flow guidelines to ensure a safe, nourishing and accessible community kitchen (S.N.A.C.K). Conclusion: The designed community kitchen manual may be of use to lay groups putting up community kitchens, since there is no existing manual in the Philippines. However, phases two and three must be conducted to validate its usefulness and accuracy in the field. Abstract:

Abstract Southeast Asia’s coastal urban areas continue to grow, with land reclamation fast becoming an important option for megacities to address issues of economic growth and increasing population density. Experts are divided over the advantages and disadvantages of land reclamation, though this process continues unabated, exposing settlements to coastal hazards. The Bataan Shipping and Engineering Company (BASECO) compound is an informal settlement on reclaimed land in Manila, the Philippines. How informal coastal settlements view disaster risk and their more pressing socioeconomic needs is crucial to understanding the potentials and repercussions of land reclamation. Using a topographic survey, a questionnaire survey, and the protective action decision model, this study explored the perception of disasters and land reclamation of informal settlers who are living on reclaimed land. The study found that people are aware of disaster risks, but are more concerned with everyday needs. They are divided on the issue of further land reclamation. Residents on the original non-reclaimed land view it as a coastal defense, while those on reclaimed land fear potential eviction. Despite this, all locations in the community are concerned with the loss of jobs, economic opportunities, and eviction, rather than potential disasters.

Abstract:

This paper explores the link between the current vision of the “smart city” and the notion of urban autopoiesis understood as self-organized/managed urban systems. It seeks to highlight how the use of GIS analysis, applied to the study of informal settlements, can provide useful information to understand the smart city paradigm. The paper argues the key idea that a smart city should not be seen only as a high-tech urban environment because the transition to smartness will need major changes in its inner structure. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative GIS analysis methods, this study examines the case of the BaSECo Compound, one of the densest informal settlements in Metro Manila (Philippines), with the aim of both generating a comprehensive morphological analysis of this dynamic urban area as well as contributing to the configurational theory of the smart city. The results suggest that the analysis of autopoietic urban systems could expand our understanding of how the structure of the city could evolve to accommodate the needs of its citizens and creating more resilient and inclusive communities.

Abstract:

Abstract. With the Philippines ranking as the third largest source of plastics that end up in the oceans, there is a need to further explore methodologies that will become an aid in plastic waste removal from the ocean. Manila Bay is a natural harbor in the Philippines that serves as the center of different economic activities. However, the bay is also threatened with plastic pollution due to increasing population and industrial activities. BASECO is one of the areas in Manila Bay where clean-up activities are focused as this is where trash accumulates. Sentinel-2 images are provided free of charge by the European Commission's Copernicus Programme. Satellite images from June 2019 to May 2020 were inspected, then cloud-free images were downloaded. After downloading and pre-processing, spectral data of different types of plastic such as shipping pouch, bubble wrap, styrofoam, PET bottle, sando bag and snack packaging that were measured by a spectrometer during a fieldwork by the Development of Integrated Mapping, Monitoring, and Analytical Network System for Manila Bay and Linked Environments (project MapABLE) were utilized in the selection of training data. Then, indices such as the Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI), Floating Debris Index (FDI) and Plastic Index (PI) from previous studies were analyzed for further separation of classes used as training data. These training data served as an input to the two supervised classification methods, Naive Bayes and Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering (MTMF). Both methods were validated by reports and articles from Philippine agencies indicating the spots where trash frequently accumulates.

Abstract:

Printable string encodings are widely used in several applications that cannot deal with binary data, the most known example being the mail system. In this paper, we investigate the potential of some of the proposed encodings to hide and carry extra information. We describe a framework for reversibly embedding data in printable string encodings, like Base45. The method leverages the characteristic of some encodings that are not surjective by using illegal configurations to embed one bit of information. With the assumption of uniformly distributed binary input data, an estimation of the expected payload can be computed easily. Results are reported for Base45 and Base85 encodings.

Abstract:

Objetivo: el Basuco es una sustancia psicoactiva derivada de la hoja de coca; hasta ahora no se ha descrito la sintomatología que genera su consumo ni su síndrome de abstinencia, por lo que suele incluirse en el mismo grupo sindromático de la cocaína. En este estudio se pretende determinar si existen signos y síntomas característicos del Basuco. Materiales y métodos: etudio piloto de carácter descriptivo y transversal, empleando una encuesta heteroaplicada a pacientes que consumieran exclusivamente Basuco, donde se les preguntaba si habían presentado determinados signos y síntomas durante su consumo o durante el síndrome de abstinencia por Basuco. Resultados: en el consumo se encontró predominio del insomnio, hiporexia, disminución de la sensación del cansancio, delirios y aislamiento social, mientras que durante la abstinencia predominó la depresión, irritabilidad, hipersominia e hiperfagia, asociado a sensación de deterioro y deseo de abandonar el consumo.Conclusiones: la sintomatología tanto del consumo como del síndrome de abstinencia por Basuco parece tener diferencias respecto a la generada por la cocaína.

IntroduzioneNel corso degli ultimi venti anni in molte regioni dell'emisfero nord-occidentale sono riemersi quei movimenti politici a base etnica il cui declino era sembrato ineluttabile dopo la ridefinizione dei confini nazionali seguita alle due guerre mondiali. Tali movimenti hanno perseguito obiettivi diversi da un caso all'altro — dalla difesa della lingua regionale alla richiesta dell'autonomia politica, all'indipendenza — e talvolta anche divergenti tra le diverse componenti del medesimo schieramento. Nonostante le differenze essi sono stati contrassegnati da una comune caratteristica: quella di rivalorizzare attributi culturali oggettivi condivisi dai loro militanti — la razza, la lingua, la religione, l'insediamento in un determinato territorio, il riferimento a precedenti istituzioni, simboli, tradizioni storiche. Questi attributi sono serviti ad alimentare processi di identificazione politica che ai governi centrali è stato richiesto di riconoscere. Tuttavia, sebbene l'esistenza di attributi culturali oggettivi comuni ai membri di gruppi etnici sia stata una condizione necessaria del riemergere dei movimenti, non ne ha però costituito il fattore decisivo.

Abstract:

El basuco es una mezcla compleja (droga psicoactiva) que se obtiene como derivado en el proceso de obtención de la cocaína. En esta investigación se empleó el basuco (pirolisado) para medir el daño genético inducido en linfocitos humanos, ya sea quiebre cromosómico o pérdida total de cromosomas, mediante la prueba de micronúcleos (MN). Linfocitos humanos (sangre total) de un donador joven, sano y no fumador, fueron empleados para detectar MN en células binucleadas después del tratamiento in vitro con tres concentraciones de basuco disueltas en agua destilada (0.92, 7.40 y 59.00 μg/ml), seleccionadas por pruebas de citotoxicidad (índice mitótico y tiempo promedio de generación celular). Se incluyeron los controles negativo (agua destilada) y positivo (mitomicina C, 50 μg/ml). Las células tratadas mostraron una diferencia significativa en el número de MN/célula binucleada con respecto al control (F = 10.37, P < 0.005) y se observó una clara relación dosis-efecto. Esto implica que el basuco es una mezcla compleja potencialmente genotóxica. Otras pruebas mutagénicas deben ser realizadas, especialmente en sistemas in vivo y en monitoreo de poblaciones humanas expuestas al basuco. Los resultados de esta investigación son útiles para prevenir a la población en riesgo expuesta a esta droga.

Abstract:

Con el paso de los años, se han ido implementando cambios significativos en la educación, esto incluye métodos y estrategias de enseñanza – aprendizaje, modelos educativos, inclusión de tecnologías de la información y comunicación, diseños curriculares, entre otros. Para Guevara (2010), el Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas ABP está fundamentado en el aprendizaje activo y en la autonomía del estudiante, es una alternativa diferente a la enseñanza tradicional en el aula, está centrado en el aprendizaje del estudiante y en la instrucción, en el que se abordan diferentes situaciones problemáticas del contexto real en grupos pequeños donde trabajan colaborativamente, enfocándose a buscar soluciones factibles, asumiendo mayor interés y responsabilidad en su aprendizaje, bajo la orientación y revisión del profesor. Dentro de las múltiples actividades que desarrolla el docente dentro del ABP está la de diseñar una indagación basada en alguna problemática interesante para sus alumnos y les muestra la posible estrategia para resolver el problema, generando motivación e interacción entre los alumnos para que investiguen la situación planteada, introduciéndolos en el campo de estudio, además de incluir el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico siendo parte de la interacción por aprender a resolver el problema, el docente solo los va orientando y facilitando en el proceso para la adquisición del conocimiento de los estudiantes, promoviendo el aprendizaje reflexivo y crítico, encaminado a la comprensión y reflexión sobre la experiencia adquirida, para aplicar lo aprendido en una situación futura (Morales, 2018). Abstract:

Transmitting binary data across a network should generally avoid transmitting raw binary data over the medium for several reasons, one would be that the medium may be a textual one and may not accept or correctly handle raw bitstream, another would be that some protocols may misinterpret the meaning of the bits and causes a problem or even loss of the data. To make the data more readable and would avoid misinterpretation by different systems and environments, this paper introduces encoding two of the most broadly used data interchange formats, XML and JSON, into the Base64 which is an encoding scheme that converts binary data to an ASCII string format by using a radix-64 representation. This process, will, make the data more readable and would avoid misinterpretation by different systems and environments. The results reflect that encoding data in Base64 before the transmission will present many advantages including readability and integrity, it will also enable us to transmit binary data over textual mediums, 7 Bit protocols such as SMTP, and different network hardware without risking misinterpretation.

A pesar de los esfuerzos que han realizado las universidades e instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales en América Latina para incentivar a los estudiantes a continuar la educación superior, algunos estudios coinciden en que los principales motivos de la deserción son los altos costos de las matriculas, la necesidad de trabajar para el mantenimiento de los propios estudiantes, la falta de preparación con la que salen de los colegios y problemas familiares, entre otros. Estoy convencido de que existe otro factor que afecta directamente la deserción y por consiguiente a la calidad de la educación, y es la falta de implementación de modelos pedagógicos institucionales que estén acordes con el mundo globalizado.

El artículo que se presenta es un intento por compartir con psicólogos y educadores la integración que proponen algunos autores entre el conocimiento sobre le cerebro y el aprendizaje en el aula, un problema arduo para la educación. En las tres o cuatro últimas décadas debido principalmente a los adelantos de las técnicas neurofisiológicas se ha avanzado en forma sustancial en el conocimiento del funcionamiento del sistema nervioso y cerebral, lo que ha permitido adelantar hipótesis relacionadas con la situación óptima para que el cerebro y el sistema neuroendocrino efectúe su mejor aprendizaje. Se revisan algunos antecedentes y el desarrollo de las ideas en torno al aprendizaje basado en el cerebro.Los aportes principales se encuentran en el desarrollo del concepto de plasticidad cerebral, aprendizaje con significado, el efecto de la experiencia temprana enriquecida, el efecto de la nutrición y los ritmos temporales naturales del ser vivo que influyen sobre la atención. El artículo finaliza con un resumen de los principios más importantes sustentados por Caine, Caine y Crowell (1999) sobre aprendizaje basado en el cerebro, en el que destaca el principio de unicidad y diversidad de la organización cerebral de los seres vivientes.

Se aplica para la mayoría de las áreas del conocimiento, sin embargo, en las ciencias experimentales es una herramienta que permite identificar un problema de la vida real, entenderlo, conocer sus causas y consecuencias para que a partir de ello, se planee un proceso para alcanzar una meta que lo solucione total o parcialmente. Es muy útil, ya que permite una enseñanza centrada en el aprendizaje donde el alumno tiene un papel más activo, un mayor compromiso, responsabilidad y un enfoque profundo en su estilo de aprendizaje.

Abstract:

<p>This research focuses on promotional strategies conducted by Padang TV in an effort to introduce and maintain the Duduak Baselo program as a cultural content program. From the minimal existence of cultural content in the majority of Indonesian television, Padang TV is one of the local stations that present cultural content, one of which is the Duduak Baselo program. This program can survive, of course, because there are promotional and marketing efforts undertaken by the television station. Promotional mix analysis that becomes the focus of this research is on how the station approach to sponsors. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. In-depth interviews, observations, and documentation are used in collecting data. The data obtained were then processed with Miles and Huberman's technical analysis and validated with triangulation techniques. The results of this study indicate that the Duduak Baselo program carries out several communication activities as their promotional strategies in introducing and maintaining the Duduak Baselo program. Padang TV, as the station that produces Duduak Baselo, in such a way builds cooperative relationships with various parties, such as the government and the private sectors. This collaborative relationship is developed to get sponsors/advertisers. Activities undertaken to establish cooperation include building relationships, spreading proposals, lobbying, and negotiating.</p>

A partire dall'estate 2018, la frontiera basca, che separa la Francia dalla Spagna, comincia ad attirare l'attenzione dei media. La rotta del Mediterraneo centrale in quel momento diviene, in effetti, maggiormente visibile e l'arrivo di migranti e richiedenti asilo dalla Spagna aumenta sensibilmente nel Paese basco francese, in particolare a Bayonne. Di fronte a tale situazione, le istituzioni locali partecipano insieme alle reti di solidarietà informale all'apertura di un centro di transito. La mediatizzazione di questa iniziativa, comparata alle "città santuario" americane, nasconde tuttavia le molte divergenze che attraversano le esperienze di accoglienza sul territorio. Il presente articolo propone un'analisi delle complesse reti di solidarietà, attraverso una doppia comparazione interna: geografica, confrontando il caso di Bayonne con le iniziative delle zone più rurali dei Paesi baschi francesi, e socio-politica, attraverso l'analisi delle diverse pratiche di attivismo degli attori solidali e del loro rapporto con la legalità.

Abstract:

El aprendizaje basado en problemas y el aprendizaje colaborativo son metodologías con demostrada eficacia en la docencia universitaria. Permiten trabajar tanto competencias básicas y específicas como transversales: el razonamiento crítico, la capacidad de trabajo en equipo o de toma de decisiones y de liderazgo. El Grado en Arquitectura y el Grado en Ingeniería de Edificación de la UCAM Universidad Católica de Murcia, puso en práctica el curso 2020-2021 una metodología docente que combina ambos sistemas de aprendizaje, implicando a varias asignaturas de diversas materias, cursos y grados en la resolución del problema, creando un equipo multidisciplinar capaz de analizarlo y solucionarlo. Se aprovechó el impacto que la pandemia por COVID-19 tuvo en los estudiantes, para proponerles que analizasen las deficiencias que los edificios residenciales en multipropiedad mostraron durante el confinamiento, para establecer protocolos de higienización de los espacios comunes y plantear alternativas de distribución de las áreas exteriores para uso privativo, mejorando la habitabilidad de los inmuebles y la calidad de vida de sus habitantes. La experiencia fue sumamente satisfactoria. Se consiguió motivar a los estudiantes, despertar su capacidad de razonamiento crítico y de trabajo en equipo. Aportaron soluciones originales de gran calidad con las que mejoraron sus resultados académicos.
