Abstract:
[Formulae and special characters can only be approximated here. Please see the pdf version of the abstract for an accurate reproduction.] Ball-impact injuries in baseball, while relatively rare, have the potential to be catastrophic. These injuries are primarily attributed to impact by the ball after it has been hit, pitched or thrown. As the closest infielder to the hitter, the pitcher is at greatest risk of being struck by the batted ball. This thesis investigated the influence of bat and ball design on ball exit velocity (BEV) and the potential for impact injury to pitchers. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to quantify the dynamics of bat-ball impact for bats of various moment of inertia and baseballs with different mechanical properties. The analysis was conducted using ANSYS/LSDYNA explicit dynamics software. To replicate a typical bat-ball impact in the field, the model required input of bat linear and angular velocity and orientation in three-dimensional (3-D) space, at the instant prior to impact. This data was obtained from 3-D kinematic analysis using two high-speed video cameras operating at 200 Hz. Seventeen high-performance batters used a wood bat and a metal bat of equal length and mass to hit baseballs thrown by a pitcher. Hitters developed significantly higher resultant linear velocity for both the proximal (38.3 ± 1.8 ms-1;) and distal (8.1 ± 1.8 ms-1) ends of the metal bat (compared with 36.4 ± 1.7 ms-1 and 6.9 ± 2.1 ms-1 respectively for the wood bat). They also achieved a significantly more “square” bat position just prior to impact with the ball (264.3 ± 9.1 deg compared with 251.5 ± 10.4 deg). These factors are important in transferring momentum to the batted ball. Mathematical description of the large-deformation material behaviour of the baseball was also required for this analysis. Previous research is limited to compression tests to 10 % of ball diameter, despite conjecture that during impact with the bat, the ball might deform to 50 % of its original diameter. Uniaxial quasi-static compression tests on seven models of baseballs investigated baseball behaviour during deformation to 50 % of ball diameter. The resulting force-displacement relationship was highly non-linear. Hence FEA was used to derive and verify a relationship to describe the time-dependent and elastic behaviour of the ball during the 1 ms period typical of bat-ball impact. The results of the bat-ball impact analysis indicated that for hits made at the point of maximum momentum transfer on the bat, the metal bat produced greater BEV than the wood bat (61.5 ms-1 and 50.9 ms-1 respectively). The higher BEV from the metal bat was attributed to greater pre-impact bat linear velocity, and bat orientation during impact. The more perpendicular horizontal orientation of the metal bat at the instant of impact resulted in a greater proportion of resultant BEV being directed in the global x-direction (toward the pitcher), compared with the wood bat. This indicates increasing bat moment of inertia (the relative mass of the bat barrel) may be a potential control strategy for BEV. BEV was also reduced for impacts using a baseball with values for instantaneous shear and relaxed modulii approximately 33 % less (9.9 % reduction in BEV for metal bat, 9.7 % for the wood bat).

In the middle of the 2015 Major League Baseball season there was a sudden increase in home run rate. Such a sudden league-wide change is difficult to explain, and many baseball pundits suggested that a "juiced" or altered baseball was the culprit. In this thesis, large scale coefficient of restitution (COR) testing is performed on baseballs from before (2014) and after (2016) the alleged change. No evidence is found to suggest that the baseball was altered between 2014 and 2016. The investigation nevertheless revealed telling properties of the coefficient of restitution. First, it was largely found that baseballs from both years fell within the COR specifications of Major League Baseball (between 0.514 and 0.578). Second, the COR is revealed to be a noisy quantity in that the same baseball can exhibit differences in COR on the order of 0.01. Third, most of the variation between baseballs' COR comes from being manufactured on different days in the plant and thus being packaged in different boxes. Additionally, an unexpected fatigue in the strike plate used in the test apparatus is found to have affected the COR measurements for the first 200 trials.

Abstract:
This case study evaluated Major League Baseball's (MLB) media product portfolio to identify how broadcast revenues have evolved over the past decade. This research looked back across baseball's long, dysfunctional history with broadcasters in order to recognize the significance of its ambitious use of online content. While MLB had failed to fully utilize the potential of broadcasting, the league's aggressive online strategy through its Advanced Media (MLBAM) division made it the industry leader in broadcasting live streaming sports video. MLBAM expanded its online streaming video to mobile phones and iPad, further expanding the distribution of its content. This research compared MLBAM revenue to traditional broadcast revenue while analyzing the online division's role in promoting the MLB brand. This case study concluded that while MLBAM had made a number of groundbreaking developments, the league could still improve its use of embedded, shared video clips, archived footage and international marketing in order to further extend the brand equity of the MLB, its thirty individual brands and its media product portfolio.

Abstract:
Excitement is rumbling through the city just waiting for the grand opening. A fresh new face has been added to the streetscape of downtown Roanoke. A new branch library and baseball stadium is set to open soon. The site is near the edge of downtown Roanoke, Virginia at the intersection of Jefferson St. and Elm Ave. All the construction is complete and cleared away. Residents and employees all around Roanoke are eager for a new baseball season to start up. Those especially eager are downtown employees, who have just a short walk from work to the stadium. The new stadium has created a buzz from all the downtown businesses looking forward to the influx of people this summer, not to mention the amount of jobs the stadium will provide residents of Roanoke. Fans will be treated to a great event and will be fully entertained. The mountains far away create a beautiful backdrop for all. With baseball games becoming more and more of a social event and atmosphere, this stadium’s seating exhibits a new socially driven design while still mixing in the simplicity of the traditional seating style. The new branch library sits atop the stadium having its own autonomous nature while also blending in with the stadium form. It has its own specific entrance designed only for library use. Its grand entrance reaches out from the brick stadium wall signifying its special use. The library is one long floor filled with book stacks, personal reading spaces, large group meeting rooms, and computers. Views outward toward the baseball field and overlooking the Roanoke area provide a peaceful spot for all to sit back and enjoy a good read. At night, the large rooms are rentable for parties on game nights allowing for a private feel while still getting the great atmosphere of the game.

Full text
Abstract:
The National Alliance for Youth Sports compared field reports released in 1995 to those in 2000, illustrating a 5% to 15% increase in adults that have gotten out of line at youth events (Carlozo, 2000). The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and frequency of adult comments at Little League baseball games for children ages 9 to 12. In addition, adults were surveyed in order to evaluate their personal opinions of crowd conduct. The participants in this study consisted of adults attending Little League baseball games in rural Indiana from May 30, 2001 to June 26, 2001. To address the purpose of the study, the researcher recorded adult comments using an adaptation of the Parent Observation Instrument for Sports Events (Kidman et al., 1999). An additional sample of 65 adults attending the last game of the season was purposefully selected to complete the survey portion of the study. The researcher tried to determine if there were significant differences between the nature of the adult comments (positive or negative), the frequency of adult comments by team play (offense or defense), by gender of the adult, by team status (winning or losing), or by competitive level (major league or minor league). Additionally, the researcher tried to determine whether there were qualitative differences between actual comments and adult opinions of comments.A chi square analysis was calculated for hypotheses 1 - 5 (p < .05) and the last hypothesis compared a chi square calculation to the frequency counts on a survey of adults. The results showed a significant difference in the frequency of comments based on the nature of the comment (positive/negative), gender, and competitive level (major league/minor league). There was no significant difference between team status (winning/losing) and frequency of comments made. There was consistency between adults' opinions of comments and actual observations. Observation results showed higher frequencies of positive comments than negative comments. Through survey data analysis, it was determined that adults believed more positive comments were made at the games.

Full text
Abstract:
On January 1, 2000, the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) imposed maximum bat performance limitations on commercial softball bats. The ASA adopted a testing standard defined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) to determine the bat performance factor (BPF), a normalized coefficient of restitution that must be less than 1.2 for the bat to be eligible for ASA sanctioned events. The ASTM standard requires that the softball strike the bat, which is free to rotate in the horizontal plane, at 26.8 mfs ± 0.3 mfs (88 ftfs ± 1 ftfs) with little or no spin. The central project goal was to develop the ASTM test apparatus, which consisted of a precision ball launcher, a pivoting stage for the bat, and instrumentation for velocity measurements. The key feature of the testing apparatus developed in this project was the ability to measure the rebound velocity of the ball directly-ASTM method derives the ball rebound velocity by assuming the bat behaves as a rigid body and applying conservation of angular momentum. Tests revealed a discrepancy in the BPF between the ASTM method and an alternative method,. termed the direct method, which uses the direct measurement of the ball rebound velocity. Furthermore, the ASTM method proved to be very sensitive to parameter errors, demonstrated by magnification factors between 2.0 and 3.0. The direct method was insensitive to parameter variation with magnification factors between o and 1.0. The ball rebound velocity discrepancy was also analyzed with mechanism simulation software. A three-degree-of-freedom model of the bat was used to test the effects of elasticity and pivot friction. The analysis determined that applying conservation of angular momentum on an elastic body caused transient errors in the derivation of the ball rebound velocity; and pivot friction significantly affected the motion of the bat and thus, the derived ball rebound velocity. The experimental results show that the direct method was more accurate than the ASTM method in calculating the BPF; and the conclusion of the analytical model shows that the ASTM method can be corrected by precisely identifying external moments in the system.

Scott, David C. "Organizational effectiveness in professional sport : a case from minor league baseball." Scholarly Commons, 1993. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2244.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study was conducted to examine organizational effectiveness in a professional minor league baseball franchise. The premise of the study was to explore the relationship between organizational effectiveness and four organizational behavior constructs. The four constructs focused upon were organizational identity, shared values, vision, and continuity. Data collection was based upon personal interviews with the entire staff, observation of general activities, and archival materials such as promotional videos and in-house publications. The organization under study, which was deemed effective because of its on-field success, was found to have a well-defined and distinctive identity, shared values in the realm of philosophical, business concerns, and a clear and acutely projected image. Continuity within the organization was not concretely established for either time frames of reference. The premise of this study was not only to examine the relationships between the four constructs and organizational effectiveness in professional sports franchises but to generate hypotheses for future research. Ten hypotheses were postulated based on the findings of this study. These ten hypotheses were: 1) An effective organization will possess an identity which is well-defined and unique to that particular organization and its members; 2) The organizational identity will be based on characteristics which are both distinctive and essential to the nature of the organization; 3) An effective organization will have developed an organizational value system based upon the shared values expressed by the members of that organization; 4) The shared values ·held will be influenced by the environment in which the organization exists; 5) An. effective organization will project a clear and meaningful image embodied by all its members; 6) An effective organization will possess an internalized guiding philosophy that will dictate a mode of behavior; 7) An effective organization will exhibit a vision which consists of both a guiding philosophy and tangible image which establish.a set of ambitions motivating its members to work towards a specific direction; 8) An effective organization will demonstrate continuity in organizational philosophy, vision, and purpose over a·pertinent and definable time frame of reference; 9) Stability in the key position within the organization will have a positive influence on organizational effectiveness; 10) An effective organization will possess an identity, value system, and vision which are in concert with each other and exemplified by all its members.

Fortenbaugh, David. "The Biomechanics of the Baseball Swing." Scholarly Repository, 2011. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/540.

Full text
Abstract:
Success in baseball batting is fundamental to the sport, however it remains one of, if not the most, challenging skills in sports to master. Batters utilize the kinetic chain to transfer energy from the lower body to the upper body to the bat, hoping to impart the maximum amount of energy into the ball. Scientists and coaches have researched the swing and developed theories on the keys for successful batting, but most of this research has been inadequate in attempting to fully describe the biomechanics of batting. The purposes of this study were to improve upon the methodology of previous researchers, provide a full biomechanical description of the swing, and compare swings against pitches thrown to different locations and at different speeds. AA-level Minor League Baseball players (n=43) took extended rounds of batting practice in an indoor laboratory against a pitcher throwing a mixture of fastballs and changeups. An eight camera motion analysis system and two force plates recording at 300 Hz captured the biomechanical data. The swing was divided into six phases (stance, stride, coiling, swing initiation, swing acceleration, and follow-through) by five key events (lead foot off, lead foot down, weight shift commitment, maximum front foot vertical ground reaction force, and bat-ball contact). Twenty-eight kinematic measurements and six ground reaction force measurements were computed based on the marker and force plate data, and all were assessed throughout the phases. First, a comprehensive description of a composite of the batters’ swings against fastballs “down the middle” was provided. Second, successful swings against fastballs thrown to one of five pitch locations (HIGH IN, HIGH OUT, LOW IN, LOW OUT, MIDDLE) were compared in terms of selected kinematics at the instant of bat-ball contact, timing and magnitude of peak kinematic velocities, and timing and magnitude of peak ground reaction forces. Third, these variables were once again compared for swings against fastballs and changeups. A large number of biomechanical differences were seen among the swings against various pitch locations. More fully rotated positions, particularly of the pelvis and bat were critical to the batters’ successes on inside pitches while less rotated positions keyed successes against outside pitches. The trail and lead arms worked together as part of a closed chain to drive the hand path. Successful swings had the trail elbow extended more for HIGH IN and flexed more for LOW OUT, though batters often struggled to execute this movement properly. A distinct pattern among successful swings against fastballs, successful swings against changeups, and unsuccessful swings against changeups was witnessed; namely a progressive delay in which the batter prematurely initiated the events of the kinetic chain, especially when unsuccessful in hitting a changeup. It was believed that this study was much more effective in capturing the essence of baseball batting than previous scientific works. Some recommendations to batting coaches would be to get batters to take a consistent approach in the early phases of every swing (particularly for the lower body), identify both pitch type and location as early as possible, use the rotation of the pelvis to propagate the energy transfer of the kinetic chain from the group to the upper body, and use the pelvis, and subsequently, the upper body, to orient the trunk and hands to an optimal position to drive the ball to the desired field. Limitations of the current study and ideas for future work were also presented to better interpret the findings of this research and further connect science and sport.

Although baseball is a very popular source of recreational activity throughout the world, safety of baseball exercise is still a concern. Results of previous studies showed that the properties of baseball were highly correlated with safety of baseball. The objective of this study was to investigate baseball’s coefficient of restitution (COR) in different impacting velocities. Another purpose was to find the relation between peak force, impulse of impact, and COR while baseball hitting the wall. In this study, the subjects were 20 trademarks baseballs, 16 trademarks were traditional baseballs and 4 trademarks were modified baseballs. Fourteen testing velocities were used in the experiment. JVC high speed video camera was used to film the ball’s impact process. In order to measure the peak force and impulse while impacting, force plant was fixed on the wall to be hit by the baseballs. The results showed that the peak force and impulse of impact were positively significantly correlated with the impact velocity, but COR was negatively significantly correlated with the impact velocity. In testing velocities 62∼80 mph, the curve of peak force, impulse, and COR curves of traditional baseballs were nonlinear and unstable. COR curves of traditional baseball were increasing in this interval, differing from decreasing in another intervals. In addition, the traditional baseballs’ COR didn’t correlate with the peak force and impulse of impact in all testing velocities. Most of the modified baseballs’ COR significantly correlated with the peak force and impulse of impact in testing velocities 71∼89 mph. Based on the results of this study, in different impact velocities, traditional baseballs’ COR curves were nonlinear and unstable. To make conjectures, this result was caused of change on the rebound model while ball impacting in high speed. Because of low correlation between impulse of impact and COR, it was difficult to find an effective method to project traditional baseballs’ COR. Modified baseball had a more simple structure, therefore each curve of parameter was relatively stable.

Purpose: The study was designed to investigate the differences of pitching velocity, pitching accuracy, and fatigue perception between under-weight and normal-weight baseballs during bullpen practice in youth pitchers. Methods: Subjects were 12 pitchers from Ping-Jen Senior High School in Taoyuan, Taiwan including 10 right-hand and 2 left-hand pitchers. The mean age was 17.00 ± 0.74 years old, the mean height was 178.25 ± 4.07 cm, the mean body weight was 73.08 ± 8.06 kg, and the mean training years was 7.25 ± 1.66 years. All subjects threw 100 balls for both the 125g under-weight baseballs and the 148g normal-weight baseballs to compare the differences of pitching velocity, pitching accuracy, and fatigue perception. Results: Results from paired sample t-tests revealed that pitching velocity of under-weight baseball was significantly faster than that in the normal-weight baseball (p < .05); no significant difference was found between under-weight and normal-weight baseballs for both pitching accuracy and fatigue perception (p > .05). Conclusion: Pitching with the 125g under-weight baseball generated faster pitching velocity without altering pitching accuracy during 100 bullpen throws in youth pitchers. Therefore, bullpen training with under-weight baseballs was recommended for youth pitchers undergoing the development of physique, physical ability, and skills to enhance pitching velocity and reduce arm injuries.

Abstract "Caring Cup" is a baseball competition. For Taiwan's indigenous people, the "Caring Cup" is a festival for culture heritage ceremony. It is not only a baseball culture but also a harvest festival, a ritual culture and a pursuit of cultural heritage. It is a platform for Taiwan's indigenous people of different ethnicities to get together and celebrate. The purpose of this study was to explore the five facets of the "Caring Cup", including the origin and development, influences, tournament system, cultivation of talent, and cultural heritage of the event. Through in-depth interviews and analyses of relevant literature, the researcher concludes that the caring cup has been an important base of ethnic integration for Taiwan's indigenous people. The "Caring Cup" has been run as a ceremony. It was originally hosted by eastern Taiwan baseball players. With their caring heart, it was later extended to involve the western part of the island and non-baseball players. Staging a platform for the development of Taiwanese aboriginal baseball is the core value of the "Caring Cup".
