Russell, D. J., T. J. Ryan, A. J. McDougall, S. E. Kistle, and G. Aland. "Species diversity and spatial variation in fish assemblage structure of streams in connected tropical catchments in northern Australia with reference to the occurrence of translocated and exotic species." Marine and Freshwater Research 54, no. 7 (2003): 813. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/mf02046.

Full text
Abstract:
The freshwater piscifauna of the watercourses of the Barron and Mitchell systems, two northern Australian catchments with adjacent headwaters, was surveyed. Fifty-eight species of fish from 26 families, including several marine vagrants, were sampled from the freshwater reaches of the Barron River, compared to 28species from 15 families from the Mitchell River. Species diversity and richness was higher in the coastal section of the Barron catchment owing to the influence of marine vagrants and species that were estuarine dependent for part of their life cycle. Detrended correspondence analysis of fish abundance data showed that sites in the coastal Barron catchment and the Mitchell catchment were widely separated in ordination space. Historically, barriers to fish movement determined species composition in both catchments, but there have been major changes in species composition as a result of extensive translocations of native fish into the Barron catchment over the last 50 years. Five species of exotic fish, including the cichlids Tilapia mariae and Oreochromis mossambicus, were established in the Barron system and one species in the Mitchell catchment. Cherax quadricarinatus, a crustacean endemic to western drainages, has been translocated into the Barron catchment and has since become widely established. This has implications for the interbasin transfer of irrigation water between the Barron and the Mitchell catchments potentially providing a mechanism for fish, including the exotic species O. mossambicus, to spread across northern Australia.

Full text
Abstract:
Hohenbuehelia (Agaricales, Pleurotaceae) and Nematoctonus (Hyphomycetes) are the names for the sexual and asexual stages of a genus of nematode-destroying fungi (Basidiomycota). We obtained partial sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA, including the internal transcribed spacer region and the 5′ end of the large subunit, of 37 isolates of Hohenbuehelia and Nematoctonus representing 13 of the 16 described species in Nematoctonus. Phylogenetic analyses support Hohenbuehelia–Nematoctonus as a monophyletic clade of the Pleurotaceae, within which the species were placed in five main subclades. Exclusively predatory species ( Nematoctonus brevisporus Thorn & G.L. Barron, Nematoctonus campylosporus Drechsler, Nematoctonus robustus F.R. Jones, and Nematoctonus sp. UAMH 5317) appear to be basal. In these species, adhesive knobs to capture prey are produced on their hyphae but not on their conidia. A single mycelial individual may feed on many nematodes. From these have arisen both exclusively parasitoid species ( Nematoctonus cylindrosporus Thorn & G.L. Barron, Nematoctonus leiosporus Drechsler, Nematoctonus leptosporus Drechsler, Nematoctonus pachysporus Drechsler, Nematoctonus tylosporus Drechsler), and species that we call intermediate predators ( Nematoctonus angustatus Thorn & G.L. Barron, Nematoctonus concurrens Drechsler, Nematoctonus geogenius Thorn & GL. Barron, Nematoctonus hamatus Thorn & G.L. Barron, and Nematoctonus subreniformis Thorn & G.L. Barron). Exclusively parasitoid species have conidia that germinate to form sticky knobs that attach to passing nematodes but lack adhesive knobs on the hyphae. Each mycelial individual feeds on only one nematode. Intermediate predators have adhesive knobs both on hyphae and on germinated conidia and can act in both predatory and parasitoid modes. Most morphospecies are resolved as monophyletic, but sequences of additional gene regions are required to clarify species limits within the N. angustatus – N. geogenius group.

Eye Banking and Corneal Transplantation 3, no. 1 (March 2024): e0022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1097/ebct.0000000000000022.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: Two commonly used donor cornea punches were assessed using quantification of peripheral endothelial cell loss (ECL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of blade topology and associated features on donor grafts. Methods: Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) (n = 8 pairs) and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) (n = 8 pairs) grafts were prepared from mate donor corneas using Moria Busin or Corza Barron donor cornea punches (all punches were 7.5 mm) and analyzed for global and peripheral ECL. Punches were examined by SEM and subsequently used to prepare PK grafts from mate donor corneas (n = 3 pairs) that were also assessed by SEM. Results: For PK grafts, peripheral ECL caused by Busin and Barron punches was 4.2% ± 0.6% and 4.0% ± 0.9% (P = 0.62), respectively. For DMEK grafts, peripheral ECL caused by Busin and Barron punches was 3.6% ± 1.9% and 3.0% ± 1.3% (P = 0.48), respectively. SEM analysis of the Busin punch identified a rolled blade with a seam; the Barron punch is created from full rod stock and is seamless. Busin punch PK grafts have a ridge of stromal tissue that was not observed in the Barron PK grafts. Both punches exhibit anomalies along the blade edge, and the stroma of both grafts exhibited “drag lines.” Conclusions: Both punches caused similar and minimal ECL. In PK grafts, the seam of the Busin punch may be the source of the observed uneven stromal surface. Striations and debris on the cutting surfaces of both punches may produce drag lines in cut stroma. These topological features may contribute to uneven donor–recipient tissue apposition, leading to astigmatism after PK.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the generalization error of two-layer neural networks for computing the ground state of the Schrödinger operator on a d d -dimensional hypercube with Neumann boundary condition. We prove that the convergence rate of the generalization error is independent of dimension d d , under the a priori assumption that the ground state lies in a spectral Barron space. We verify such assumption by proving a new regularity estimate for the ground state in the spectral Barron space. The latter is achieved by a fixed point argument based on the Krein-Rutman theorem.

Abstract:
The Cretaceous record of the diatoms presented here outlines our understanding of their early morphological development. Recent documentation of well preserved Lower Cretaceous (Aptian/Albian) diatom assemblages provides a window into the early history of the diatoms and serves as a base for comparing their subsequent morphological changes. A brief review of diatom biology and morphology is provided to introduce this paper and that of Barron and Baldauf (this volume). Additional background information on the diatoms can be found in the works of Schrader and Schuette (1981), Tappan (1980), Bach and Burkhardt (1984), Barron (1985a, 1993), Fenner (1985), Ricard (1987), Bradbury (1988), Round et al. Abstract:
Gonimochaete pyriforme Barron was studied using the electron microscope. Protoplasm in the pyriform-shaped aplanospore is filled with electron-dense vesicles (0.1–0.3 μm) except at the base where it is vacuolated. The globose knob at the apical end of the spore is covered with a very thin adhesive layer (ca. 0.1 μm) whose electron density is slightly enhanced by ruthenium red staining but which does not show a fibrillose appearance. After attachment to the nematode's cuticle, a narrow germ tube (0.15 μm) arises from the globose knob and penetrates through the adhesive layer and the host's cuticle into the nematode body. The adhesive knob of the aplanospore in G. pyriforme is very similar in ultrastructure to the encysted zoospore of Myzocytium humicola Barron and Percy in the Lagenidiales after the cyst has germinated.
